Good review. I have the sport rock crawler one. We (wife & me) took a two week trip to the Black Hills this summer. Highly recommend. Leaving for Sand Hollow Friday. We each have our own machine. We have about 1,300 miles and no problems of any kind. We have full glass windshields for cool weather. Also recommend. We have used them in Death Valley, no temp issues. You're right about the headlights. Horrible. We have Rigid lights because we live in the desert. I hate the Bimini top! I'll look at the one you got. I don't run across many 50" trails. My model has Fox shocks, does yours? Really cushy.
My MT fuel gauge shows 1/2 tank and 2.5 gallons will fill it up. When the low fuel light comes on, it will take less than 5 gallons to fill it. She burns about 8 ounces of oil every 100 miles (since new), so she's going to the dealer this week and they'll try to figure out what's going on (32 engine hours). Other than that, I'm very happy with the machine. Plenty of power, handles great, looks awesome.

I've always preached that a winch really should be the first thing to add to any machine. These things are getting so dam heavy nowadays that there is just no way you'll get it unstuck without one. All of these 50" size machines have understeer it seems. I think it has to do with the wheel base being narrow and short makes it push the front end around corners in my experience. Go karts will kind of do the same thing.
Nice video! How tall are ya? Do the seats have a good bit of adjustment? Looking for something me and the wife can both enjoy but she's 5' and I'm 6'4" think it'd be cramp?
I'm 6' and my wife is 5'8" If you have long legs "maybe" you might be a bit cramped. For me it's good with the seat slid all the way back. I end up with my left leg leaning against the pad on the door and my right knee against the center console. But I have enough room that I can reposition my legs easily, and both knees can move under the steering column without even coming close to hitting it. I've never heard of anyone taller than me complaining. Leg room doesn't seem to be an issue, but your mileage may vary depending on how long your legs are. And that with the seat slid all the way back. It has probably 8-10 inches of foreword travel, so your wife will be able to make it fit her easily, and the tilt steering makes it nice for everyone. 👍
when you put the new Tusk tires on did you use the factory wheel, being the back rims are wider, I didn't know if there would be mounting problems with the Tusk tires.
Wheels on the Trail are the same on all 4 corners, only the tires are different sizes. Sports have wider wheels in the back, but the Trail is the same wheel.
Nice review. Your Terrabites are nondirectional, so if you rotate them side to side every 500 miles, you won't get so much drastic wear on the leading edges of the tread blocks. At least not so quickly.
@@MyATVlife Yeah, but by doing it that way, you're still wearing down the same leading edge. If you swap each tire to the other side of the machine, they are rotating the opposite way and now you've got a fresh leading (biting) edge.
Jason Duffy nothing wrong with the Can Am trunk that I know of. I'm not totally sure that it will work with the Ryfab rack though. The rack does hug down the back of the machine pretty closely, not sure if there is enough room for the lid of the trunk or not. You might want to look into that before ordering the rack.

It's a little unnerving to think there is so little protection in that area of the machine. Now I'm just hyper focused on every dam stick laying on the trail. Ones that go across the trail are ok, but sticks laying in the direction you're traveling are always a threat. Makes me nervous.
Good review. I'll be going from quad to 50" sxs this year. Was your experience coming from the Paiute with your tail between your legs truly due to machine? Do you feel your sxs driving skill has room to improve?
I just really underestimated the difference between an ATV and a SXS. We had done many miles on our ATV's on the Paiute Trail and I thought I knew what to expect, but it turns out I didn't really know. Now that I have more experience in the SXS it's all good. We've done 500-600 more miles there in the Maverick Trail since that first trip, and we're a lot more competent now than we were. It's just a bigger transition than we thought it would be. Now that we are more experienced in the SXS I wouldn't go back to ATV's full time. I much prefer the SXS. It wasn't really the machines fault.
Good review! The last time I sat in one I thought the visibility in the cab was not that great.Do you get used to it? And I would think that front rack would make it even worse.
It's not great, and it does talkie getting used too. I'm tall enough that it isn't so bad. And the rack does add even more obstruction. My wife is a little shorter than me and complains About the visibility on really tight technical stuff.
Excellent review I like to see people reviewing offbrand add-ons that are often better and cheaper or at least cheaper than those made by Then the manufacture yeah I have a flashlight that’s brighter than your headlights I don’t understand why it wouldn’t come with more than adequate headlights, beings they are literally part of the machine? I hate when the parts the machine comes with needs to be upgraded to be useful because that means they’re ripping you off, at some point you’re forced to spend money just to use the machine? I don’t understand that. For the money we pay for these machines they need to be “turnkey “ usable I realize they’ve done great in other areas but why have an oversight that cost you $200 just to make the machine usable headlights are a must LOL not an afterthought...
What made you go with the can am over the Polaris 900 trail? Any major repairs since the video? How’s the leg room compared to a Polaris 900? Stuck between the two
My dealer sells both Can Am and Polaris, so I was able to go back and forth between the two machines to see how they felt. My Maverick Trail was the first one my dealer received (October 2017), so it was totally new for everyone at the time. There are several reasons I chose the MT over the Polaris. The price of the two machines was the same, but I felt like you got more for your money with the Can Am. Doors, unlocking rear diff (not sure if the 2020 model still has the unlocking rear diff), "eco/Sport mode" switch, and I felt like the fit and finish of the Can Am was much better than the Polaris. I also preferred the seating position of the Can Am. It's lower and more "laid back" where the Polaris is more "up and foreword", it just felt better to me. The visibility over the front of the Can Am isn't as good because of the seating position, but you do get used to it. The cabin feels a lot more spacious than the Polaris because of it's longer wheelbase, and it has more storage inside the cockpit. All these reasons just felt like a better fit and a better buy for me. I do still believe that I would have been completely happy with the Polaris, I think either machine would be worth owning, but I am very happy I chose my Maverick Trail. Almost 3,000 miles on it now and I have had zero issues with it (knock on wood). I should say that I owned several Polaris ATV's before this, in fact, all I have ever owned up to this point was Polaris machines. So for me the RZR 900 was the default option, that was the machine I was going to the dealer to buy, but the Can Am won me over. It's the first Can Am I have ever owned, and I just couldn't be happier with my decision. Thanks for watching, and keep me posted on what you end up choosing. Terrabites are great tires, I've had 3 sets, good idea to run air pressure close to factory recommendation. Couple months ago a sharp rock ripped the side wall on the rear tire of my last set. I was on my way to the local dunes @ 10psi, completely ruined the tire.. I'm running kanati terramasters now, traction is much better in the sand but not anywhere as balanced as the terrabites. Great video 👍.

I too upgraded from an atv to a SXS last year. I ended up going with the RZR trail (used) but it’s great seeing your transition! 2019 holds shock and tire upgrades for me!

What is your opinion of windshields? I know you don't have one. I'm looking into getting one, but don't know if I want a half, full, or combo (fold down type). I would appreciate your input. Thanks Woody
No question if I was going to get one I would get the Ryfab folding windshield, no question. It's glass so it won't scratch like the poly ones do (even the hard coated ones scratch). Razorback makes a nice one similar to the Ryfab, but it's a bit more money. A half windshield doesn't block much wind (from what i hear) and they all get covered with dust and you can't see through them.
I took my full windshield off for spring/summer/fall use because it caused an incredible amount of dust and hot air to come into the interior. For winter I'll put it back on along with the back windshield.
I guess people get excited when they see a machine that they really like. I have great feelings Motorcycles and ATV and off road Trucks .. The the look of a UTV does nothing for me and to sit inside a a vehicle vs sitting on a vehicle is a big difference. On a dirt bike I would sport ride in an ATV i wold explore and do very little sport riding. I just cant see myself sitting in a car style vehicle exploring the forest. I am getting a Can Am 6x6 outlander. An ATV for 2 people plus a dump bed made for exploring - extra traction from 6 independent wheels - extra low gear - larger radiator etc works for me. I guess I have never been part of the main stream when it comes to purchases.
Ram 4570 Sure, I agree. I’ve purchased an Argo for other activities, a little more money but it also is a machine you sit in, not on. We sold our Grizzlies and upgraded to this “sit in “ machine in search of greater comfort and it hasn’t disappointed us so far! Well done Can-Am.....😘
How do you fit in this unit? I want to buy one but haven’t seen one in person yet. I am 6’3 and I’m wondering if I would even fit. How is it with two people in the cab also?
only place for me that it feels snug is on my shoulder up against the door. Some people that bothers them, but most don't really have a problem. Plenty of leg room, but your knees will rest against the center console and the door. Plenty of room between the driver and the passenger. For me I feel like there is plenty of room, and I know couples bigger than us that find it very comfortable. Only thing I can suggest is spend some time sitting in one and see how it feels to you. I've always felt like the cockpit is one of it's biggest positive features. No where near as much room as say, a Polaris General, but for a 50 inch machine it was by far the most comfortable for me and my wife.
Have you had anymore issues with picking up a stick and cracking the floor? I have a 2019 Maverick Trail. I’ve had it 5 weeks now. While I was riding solo today I somehow picked up a stick and it came through the floor on the passenger side. If someone would have been sitting there they could have been hurt. I was only going about 4 to 5 MPH when it happened.

Ryfab makes them. They are specific to the cargo box for the Maverick Trail. You just take the bolts out of the handles on each side of the box and mount these using the same holes. Contact Ryfab, they'll hook you up 👍
I have never had that issue. The radiator seems pretty well protected by the inner liner. These tires really like to pick up rocks and huck them too, but I've never had any hit the radiator.
How is the cabin heat I have a can am commander and if you’re in tight spots and moving slow it gets extremely hot in the cab I was wondering how this one felt
I don't notice any cab heat at all. I don't run a windshield of any kind. Only complaints I've heard are from guys that run windshields. I think they draw the heat up from the rear into the cab. I haven't experienced any heat at all.
Cab heat is also increased when moving slow in lower gear for extended periods. However, it’s not unbearable, just remember a cold beverage will not stay cold forever in those built in cup holders on the floor!
Thanks ! I really didn't notice any power loss with these tires. Overall I think I gained about 8-9lbs at each corner, but for a 8 ply tire over the stock 4 ply it's totally worth it. No noticeable loss in power or acceleration, but a huge improvement in handling 👍
I've never experienced any leaking at all. Also at full droop the axles still run smooth, they do not bind up either. Zero issues after 1600 plus miles with the front sway bar off. 👍
A common misconception is that adding or decreasing spring preload makes the springs firmer or softer. Not true. The spring rate remains unchanged. You are only adjusting the ride height.
Although in theory I agree with you, in practice I completely disagree. When I adjust the preload on my MT to increase ride height it rides stiffer. The more ride height I add the stiffer it gets. It's an absolutely noticeable difference with this machine.
We did. We got rained on half the trip, but we still managed to get a little riding in. I just put up a "teaser" video of our trip. Still going through footage and putting the full video from our trip together.
One important issue hardly mentioned is brakes. I find the brakes are not of good quality. Poor stopping, when immediately required, seems impossible to achieve! This is an issue that BRP itself should be reviewing on their sleds as well. In fact, it should fall into a minimum mandatory requirement, when dealing with recreational machines with so much horsepower! Other than similar issues noted by this video, the Maverick Trail is an enjoyable S X S , especially if you are looking for a different riding position. I’ve upgraded the seats & seat belts to Beard, worth every penny, supplied through Can -Am! ❣️

They're all made by Rotopax. The white ones are 1 gallon (those are water packs) and the red one on front is a 3 gallon. They make several different sizes and colors for different fluid applications.
The most I've ever gone on a tank was 133 miles, and I still had a couple of gallons of fuel when I got back. I think I could get 160-170 miles out of a tank of fuel depending on the terrain.

I actually have rotated them once at about 600-700 miles. I just did front to back

I do, plan on purchasing the RYFAB cargo rack that you have. I was going to buy the box and opted for the Can AM trunk. Wrong choice by me.

The the look of a UTV does nothing for me and to sit inside a a vehicle vs sitting on a vehicle is a big difference. On a dirt bike I would sport ride in an ATV i wold explore and do very little sport riding. I just cant see myself sitting in a car style vehicle exploring the forest. I am getting a Can Am 6x6 outlander. An ATV for 2 people plus a dump bed made for exploring - extra traction from 6 independent wheels - extra low gear - larger radiator etc works for me. I guess I have never been part of the main stream when it comes to purchases.
Ram 4570 Sure, I agree. I’ve purchased an Argo for other activities, a little more money but it also is a machine you sit in, not on. We sold our Grizzlies and upgraded to this “sit in “ machine in search of greater comfort and it hasn’t disappointed us so far! Well done Can-Am.....😘

How do you fit in this unit? I want to buy one but haven’t seen one in person yet. I am 6’3 and I’m wondering if I would even fit. How is it with two people in the cab also?
only place for me that it feels snug is on my shoulder up against the door. Some people that bothers them, but most don't really have a problem. Plenty of leg room, but your knees will rest against the center console and the door. Plenty of room between the driver and the passenger. For me I feel like there is plenty of room, and I know couples bigger than us that find it very comfortable. Only thing I can suggest is spend some time sitting in one and see how it feels to you. I've always felt like the cockpit is one of it's biggest positive features. No where near as much room as say, a Polaris General, but for a 50 inch machine it was by far the most comfortable for me and my wife.
Have you had anymore issues with picking up a stick and cracking the floor? I have a 2019 Maverick Trail. I’ve had it 5 weeks now. While I was riding solo today I somehow picked up a stick and it came through the floor on the passenger side. If someone would have been sitting there they could have been hurt. I was only going about 4 to 5 MPH when it happened.
I've only had it happen once. Luckily it didn't go all the way through, it just cracked the footwell.

No. Rock sliders make the machine 54 inches. Won't fit through 50 inch gates around here with rock sliders on.

I have the same storage box, where did you purchase the mounts for your rotopax.
Ryfab makes them. They are specific to the cargo box for the Maverick Trail. You just take the bolts out of the handles on each side of the box and mount these using the same holes. Contact Ryfab, they'll hook you up 👍

do you have problems with the tires kicking rocks into the back of the radiator?
I have never had that issue. The radiator seems pretty well protected by the inner liner. These tires really like to pick up rocks and huck them too, but I've never had any hit the radiator.
How is the cabin heat I have a can am commander and if you’re in tight spots and moving slow it gets extremely hot in the cab I was wondering how this one felt
I don't notice any cab heat at all. I don't run a windshield of any kind. Only complaints I've heard are from guys that run windshields. I think they draw the heat up from the rear into the cab. I haven't experienced any heat at all.
Cab heat is also increased when moving slow in lower gear for extended periods. However, it’s not unbearable, just remember a cold beverage will not stay cold forever in those built in cup holders on the floor!
Have you lost much power with bigger size of tire?

Thanks ! I really didn't notice any power loss with these tires. Overall I think I gained about 8-9lbs at each corner, but for a 8 ply tire over the stock 4 ply it's totally worth it. No noticeable loss in power or acceleration, but a huge improvement in handling 👍

Taking the sway bar off. Are you worried the extra travel the axle seals leaking fluid?
I've never experienced any leaking at all. Also at full droop the axles still run smooth, they do not bind up either. Zero issues after 1600 plus miles with the front sway bar off. 👍
A common misconception is that adding or decreasing spring preload makes the springs firmer or softer. Not true. The spring rate remains unchanged. You are only adjusting the ride height.
Although in theory I agree with you, in practice I completely disagree. When I adjust the preload on my MT to increase ride height it rides stiffer. The more ride height I add the stiffer it gets. It's an absolutely noticeable difference with this machine.
Have you made it to Moab yet? or has the weather kept you home?
We did. We got rained on half the trip, but we still managed to get a little riding in. I just put up a "teaser" video of our trip. Still going through footage and putting the full video from our trip together.

I just used the screws that came with the flaps. Basically a self tapping screw, yeah.

One important issue hardly mentioned is brakes. I find the brakes are not of good quality. Poor stopping, when immediately required, seems impossible to achieve!
This is an issue that BRP itself should be reviewing on their sleds as well. In fact, it should fall into a minimum mandatory requirement, when dealing with recreational machines with so much horsepower! Other than similar issues noted
by this video, the Maverick Trail is an enjoyable S X S , especially if you are looking for a different riding position. I’ve upgraded the seats & seat belts to Beard, worth every penny, supplied through Can -Am! ❣️

Where did you get those gas cans?..I’d like to get some for my teryx
They're all made by Rotopax. The white ones are 1 gallon (those are water packs) and the red one on front is a 3 gallon. They make several different sizes and colors for different fluid applications.
Several online retailers carry them, Rotopax.
How many miles can you get out of a tank of gas??
The most I've ever gone on a tank was 133 miles, and I still had a couple of gallons of fuel when I got back. I think I could get 160-170 miles out of a tank of fuel depending on the terrain.

Usually around 18-18.5 with mixed trail/road driving. Sometimes just under 18 and a few times over 19, but I'd say a solid average of around 18.5.
