  • What's up, folks! I'm back with another Duran Duran reaction, though I'd like to start this Duran Duran reaction by issuing a clarification for my fellow Depeche Mode lovers. To wit, I discuss at the beginning of the video how I've been loving pretty much every Duran Duran track I've been reacting to, and to help explain how significant that is, I bring up Depeche Mode---forever a leading contender for my favorite band ever, in part due to their massive role in my introduction to electronic music as a wee kid---and indicate that I don't even love all of their songs on the same level. But to be clear, it was just as a way to emphasize how brilliant Duran Duran's catalog is, which I'm only just coming to realize (whereas I've loved Depeche's discography my whole life).
Basically, don't break out the pitchforks and torches, Depeche lovers; I promise I mean no disrespect, lol. Regardless, join me as we listen to a groovy and sultry dance-oriented tune from Duran Duran's 2021 album Future Past. Cheers!

I know I’m in the minority, but I love DD’s instrumentals, interludes, and experimental offerings. I think they add character to an album and either bridge two dissimilar tracks or steer the album into a new direction (or both).

Oh me too! Some of the most moving experiences I've had while listening to Duran have been during their experimental and instrumental tunes.

Your Depeche Mode namecalling was quite spot-on, this is exactly Durans wandering in DM musical territory. A great track indeed

I think that the opening sound to "Velvet Newton" is a silent nod to Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" and the final whoosh that you hear in the end is another nod to Duran Duran's song "Faster than Light".

I believe, this Songtitle is a reference to "Helmut Newton", a famous art photographer. And as Nick is confessed to art, this would make perfectly sense.

@@mattsnider2667 it makes even more sense since their famous Chauffeur video is heavily inspired by Newton's erotic photographies

Another intriguing theory (elaborated by a friend of mine) is that it's a reference to the character played by Elisabeth Taylor in National Velvet and Nanette Newman in International Velvet movies, a horse-riding girl who manages to win an important prize pretending to be a boy. Her surname is Brown, I still like that theory tho

Also liberty 1990 is a more guitar driven album. Some good tunes on that. 1995 thank you is cover songs from led zeplin to Elvis Costello to tina turner. Then there is medazzaland a dark moody album from 1997. Then pop trash 2000? Then astronaut 2004 that hand andy Taylor back in on guitar then red carpet massacre in 2007 a more urban sound produced with timberland and Justin Timberlake. There catalog is massive.

@@timchandler4688@Matt Snider I was just thinking about their massive catalog and realizing how they have something for everyone. You have your Nick fans who love the synthesizer sounds, your Andy/guitar fans who love the more rock elements, John and Roger bring the groove. Then you've got Simon who is the glue that brings it all together ( IMHO 😁) with his lyrics and with his voice. Matt I think you mentioned Simon's vocal abilities in one of your videos. I wanted to touch on that a little bit he started singing as a choir boy which is where he states that he got his ability to harmonize. Some of the lryics and sounds Simon creates are in his own head, like writing poetry and such, but in an interview I saw somewhere he talks about how the band creates music 1st. Then his process is to listen to the music, to feel it, and starts harmonizing (almost chanting) which you can hear in a few of their instrumental onlys, like as in Velvet Newton that you just listened to. He does this on the song Tel Aviv and Invocation as well, those are the ones that just come to my mind right now anyways he starts to harmonize and chant and this is where a lot of his lyrics start to build and turns them into songs. He mentioned this because he said generally bands have lyrics first and then create music around the lyrics and they do the opposite.

Duran have such a dark underbelly and my love of Duran & Techno come to the fore on this, I absolutely love this track…..
But my favourite on Future Past is the pure brilliance of Laughing Boy

Duran, Techno, Progressive house etc, Dark Goth, Punk, floats my boat…
Duran meet in the middle and sometimes throw off left field and I just love that, there’s not a mood musically that Duran can’t fit
