Kazutaka Kodaka, writing Danganronpa
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- We spent time with game director and writer Kazutaka Kodaka, creator of the Danganronpa series, standing on the front lines of the "death game" style in Japanese games and celebrating this year its 10th anniversary.
During this interview, we look at his game scenario writing approach and his views on the “death game” genre, including influences and inspirations from films or animation. We also dive into Kodaka's approach towards character creation, in an effort to define what creates his atypical style.

#danganronpa
He seems so normal for the things he created
😂Right
Nagito Komaeda is still one of the most interesting characters I've come across.
agreed!!!
Same
@@Subscribersnodignity thats the part of the charm
Really? I can't believe that.
This is my favorite character in the Danganronpa franchise
Danganronpa was a huge part of my high school life. I got into it freshman year when 2 came out and V3 came out during my senior year.
When Kodaka mentioned that he liked Ikuhara’s work, I understood that. I’m also a big fan of Ikuhara’s work. I could see some elements in Danganronpa and Death Come True that were inspired by Ikuhara’s work.
Do you mean that Danganronpa was inspired by Sailor Moon? xD
Makes me want to try and get into his games again, since I respect Ikuhara a lot, Penguindrum is one of my absolute favorites. I played one of the Danganronpas and sadly I didn't get into it at all.
Danganronpa V3 has one of my favorities stories and characters of anything; it is a real inspiration. Thank you for interviewing one of the greats.
Thanks for watching!
Same its my fav too
“Murder is like making a black joke”
Well said
What does black joke mean like dark humor?
Beatrice knows
This is my favorite visual novel game. For some reason this is the only type that I enjoy playing
Please play more games.
I havent played any danganrompa but I recomend you the quantic dream titles like heavy rain and detroit becomes human.
Also to try something different without getting to far of visual novels try catherine
i would higly recommend the "Zero escape" series written by Kotaro uchiko , the first two games have some of the most clever writting i´ve seen in the genre , plus you can catch it on steam for a very low price ( kotaro uchiko also found the "Too Kyo Games studio" along with kazutaka kodaka and have recently publish "world´s end club" the only problem to that game being that is a switch exclusive
(sorry for the english)
Play when they cru
perhaps you'd enjoy doki doki literature club? they aren't similar story-wise but they both have 'horror' elements
Recently got into the games. Loved them. Was sadden to find out not every character had a figure made of them. I love the art style in particular. Very distinct.
MAD respect guys, absolutely love your channel and I am very grateful for being able to watch this here
Thank you!
What an excellent interview, I really enjoyed Mr. Kazutaka not hesitating to show that even he struggles with creating his works despite being a veteran of his field. His analysis on the act of killing / the intent is really great food for thoughts too. Thank you guys so much for this interview!
P.S. Is the BGM available from anywhere?
EDIT: Just discovered that you guys have a patreon set up. I know 5 bucks isn't a whole lot but I hope I can at least contribute to your guys' projects!
I love this man so much, he created and gave us something beautiful, a work of art
Wow! I love Danganronpa and this was very insightful as a game designer. Thank you for the beautiful interview.
I think we can all agree that The Story of Danganronpa can make you emotional And twists happens in the whole game and its thanks to Kazutaka Kodaka for His Creation Danganronpa is always his best work for me and i admire this man for his creativityness and great thinking ❤
I don't care what anybody says to me Danganronpa v3 is a masterpiece!
Truu
I second this
I still hope for the day we get either a danganronpa style or danganronpa game with actual choices and different endings. I want character relationships to change with the story and your choices. To maybe be able to save someone or even stop a person from doing a killing but it let's someone else take up the knife so to speak.
Same! I wish that the free time events unlocked things other than stuff for trials, like certain scenes or something like that.
While its an RPG, you should probably try out Lost Dimensions, you would probably enjoy it. Shin Megami Tensei IV has some elements too where your decisions change the outcome and who lives/who dies, who is enemy/ who is ally.
Man i really missed this series of documentries on Japanese game creators.
This was wonderful, thank you
Thanks for watching!
Thank You Kazutaka.
Thx for creating all these characters they are comfort characters to me
Excellent as always. His Battle Royale influence was kinda obvious (unlike his other influences) but I`m glad to hear It directly from him. Such a nice and interesting guy, as he said, he sounds wide and shallow at the same time.
I hope you do Kotaro Uchikoshi at some point.
Yes, a fun fact is that Kodaka has worked in the past as an assistant director for Battle Royale's director Kinji Fukasaku.
We did a short interview with Kotaro Uchikoshi at last year's TGS: ua-cam.com/video/nY8UZOvlQ5I/v-deo.html
The Suda and Ikuhara influences are VERY obvious if you know about them, but the vast majority of DR players do not it seems. There are very direct homages to these creators baked into DR.
@@LadyDeSelby yea...
The bois are back, lets go!
Thanks for sharing this interview! It was interesting hearing about Kodaka's influences, since I enjoyed so many of their works as well. It was like "oh, that makes sense"
Thanks for watching!
Hope Ryukishi07 gets to be on this channel one day. Higurashi and Umineko are top tier stuff.

When i first heard of danganronpa, i thought it was a boring space adventure game. One of the youtuber and his fans was pretty much obsessed with danganronpa i guess..? I always wondered why people liked it. Then one day i saw an edit of Mikan and it was amazing and i was like “I’m gonna hv to watch that.” And i looked up her name in google and realized that she was from Danganronpa, i first watch the happy havoc (anime) but I hesitated to watch d gameplay cuz i thought it was shit, but i also wanted to know why ppl love it so i just watch the gameplay from youtube
And bruh, i got so obsessed with it and realized why so many people liked it. I’ve never been this obsessed and for 3 months i fell in love with it (bruh omg my obsession felt like forever and i was obsessed with it for ONLY 3 MONTHHS) YO I NEED TO STOP THIS OBSESSION HELP ME, BUT I ALSO DONT WANT TO STOP LOVING DANGANRONPA KODAKA I LOVE YOUR GAME
Is great the see the creator's perspective. And he is very humble! I like that. Thanks for sharing! 🎀
Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for getting with Kodaka! Been waiting for this one!! 🔥🔥🔥
Great video once again! I’d love if you could interview more creators who specialize in writing.
Great insight, I found interesting his view on the death genre, and his methods of first writing the story then building characters is something as a writer I'll try, seems good. Thanks for the video!
best thriller-murder mystery anime/game ever
Thank you Kodaka. I hope you don't stop the DR series
Thank you Kodaka.
Love to get more insight into Japanese game writers!
When i was in elementary. I was obsessed with drv3. I always wanted to be like kaede..i thought she was pretty..i still think shes pretty. It was a huge part of my childhood from 3rd to 4th grade.
I love kaede so much but she died
@@nickryan6787 SAME😊
Spectacular video, I wish it was longer though.
danganronpa : trigger happy havoc is really my favourite story game of all times
Danganronpa is incredible.Congratulations
thank you for this amazing work archipel, love your vids
Thank you.
Nothing really to say, but I enjoyed this video. Thanks for making and sharing it.
Ever since I saw the trailer to Akudama drive I've been curious about his work. Just recently got into the danganronpa series and then I see you suddenly release an interview with him, a much welcomed coincidence. Now I can't wait for Akudama drive; he's certainly a skilled writer. Some great stuff in his material and I can certainly see the Battle Royale inspiration.
Yes!
Love his writing.
Thank you, Archipel!
Thanks for watching!
Please, try to do an interview with Komatsuzaki Rui. He's an amazing artist. Although I'm afraid he does like to do any public facing stuff and will not be in a future interview....
I'm still thinking about his line about "pay(ing) attention to why the game is being made". So many games (and other media) just don't seem to have a point other than "here are some shiny visuals now please give us your money :)". Like, they feel lifeless and mass produced, no creative vision and idea behind them.
Say what you want about DR (I'm not the biggest fan myself), but there's a clear style and philosophy to it, and it stands out as unique even a decade later. The attempt alone makes it more notable than a lot of other stuff out there that doesn't even try.
I really hope were getting another danganronpa game, but if he decided to end the franchise then it's all up to him
Its fine
I doubt we're getting a new game in 2021, probably 2022 or 23, or if the series really is over, well, it's fine. But it's an amazing series.

Awesome Kazutaka Kodaka, writing a death game Danganronpa Video.
such a short video about such an interesting person :(
Looking forward to this series!
Here he is.... The main man himself!
I just really hope that the v3 game gets anime, because I really wish to see them animated
I think danganronpa v3 works as a game
Thank you.
I don’t remember when I started watching Danganronpa, but I prob watched it at 2020. I literally adore the game! Great artstyle, great characters (some characters are bad), and great plot. I hope the fandom doesn’t die soon
Very good as usual. Keep up the great work !
Thank you!
wow! keep them coming :) rly nice
Do you guys have Patreon?

Thank you!
Thanks for yet another great video!
So happy you're back!
「ゲームのメインはシナリオ、プレイやアクションはそのための演出」って考えにほぉーってなった。こういう考えのクリエイターもいるんだね、なかなか面白い。
He has a brillant mind
The fact that creator got the danganronpa idea from david lynch movies really unexpected
I want to be just like kazutaka kodaka 💞
THANKS
I've played the danganronpa series and also watched akudama drive, which is his work. I think he has managed to build a story world, as Ryukishi 07 did with his works like Higurashi and Umineko. and I like both of them.
I love your videos
Thanks for the subs
Très bon documentaire sur un excellent mangaka; merci. Merci au Japon de produire du rêve.
Y los subtitulos en español :c
GRANDE KAZUTAKA
💗
hi i have heard of this anime, but never watch it. ""Spoilers I think ?"
I like the idea on death games. But I don't think most manga artists do it write. The easiest way to write death games is to have it were, its more action pack, than mental disturbance. I think "most" manga artist, don't really think when they write stuff, but this man does.
are they actually dead for real??? or is the virtual thing actually true, like I know some characters die but is it true? I mean the man smart. He knows that he cant kill all of the amazing characters because of fan service and stuff, etc. Also, it's a good way to bring back old characters if he truly wants too. "This is a smart/good manga artist", I would say most manga artists aren't really that smart when they write. They think too "economically" when they write./stupidly greedy. Sorry for my poor writing, I'm Japanese seeya :D
thank you.
Bruh the man kills his characters again
good start!

What's the background music? It's awesome!
Is this really only 8 minutes long? Is there another version with more talks with kodaka? Don't get me wrong I would legit get on patreon for more extensive videos.
kodaka is a GOD.
alright I'm gonna sub now

The Voynich Hotel and Brainfeeder X on his shelves? patrician taste confirmed
As a person who does not watch Anime or play visual novels ever, I shrugged this game off as some weeb fan service, but once I played this game oh my god I was wrong
Do you realize that there are many anime or visual novels that have plot not inferior to this? Brushing off the whole genre just because "it isn't what cool kids do, only weebs" is childish.
@@greenlitlleman It is probably due to the fact that I am severely misinformed with the shows I watch, I get how it can be a childish of me to have that type of opinion due to the fact that opinion came about at a time where I was severely narrowminded with my opinions and that opinion especially stuck around with me. If you can recommend some stuff that would be great.
@@arcticularUmineko is top-tier; the story is even more compelling than Danganronpa.
Please interview Kotaro Uchikoshi next!
Actually, we did a short interview with Kotaro Uchikoshi at last year's TGS - sharing in case you missed it: ua-cam.com/video/nY8UZOvlQ5I/v-deo.html
I really want to talk to him about Akudama Drive.. onegai kami-sama T_T
Kokichi Ouma Will always be iconic
7:37 I'm assuming he's a fan of 13 Sentinels? that or he knows some of the people who worked on it :)
"or seem taken from something else" phoenix wright! =X ! Jk, love danganronpa but i like ace attorney too.

I hate this bastard man for making me feel things. Gonta was best boy godamnit why did he have to die.
Wondering what program he uses to write his scripts?
i think monokuma can't kill kazutaka kodaka
3:23 Where is that scene from? I've never seen Makoto and Chiaki together o.o
presumably danganronpa s or the v3 development plan
"Actually if you decide on your characters first", "They remain stuck in that frame". Actually not necessarily Kodaka San, If you figure out your characters first, You can work out more easily what your story scenario is, and how your character fits in within that scenario as well as how they change, and develop within that scenario and not just a character that randomly decide things based on the circumstances they find themselves in, especially since it wasn't foreshadowed nor did it make sense with how the character was.
please add tags so that the video get more traction this might not reach japanese audience
