That answers the one question I've always had about that mask. I wonder how much more damage his Emil mask will have to take before he gets another one or use something else. Or go back to puppets.
Respect to Toco Toco Tv you get interviews with Yoko Taro & Daisuke Ishiwatari some of the most talented & elusive Game developers, keep up the quality videos i'll be here watching
Thank you for this interview. I just recently discovered Nier/Drakengard series and found out about Yoko Taro. He seems like a very nice and intelligent person who's giving all his passion towards something he loves to do. Nier: Automata was hands down one of the best games I've ever played in my entire life, really simple at first glance but the core of it is way more complicated, clever and brilliant. It's truly a gem amongst videogames. Needless to say I'm a big fan of his stuff now.
David Santos feels like he is a character all by himself. And with a character goes a personality. Seems legit to me qnd may even be the best way to describe him.
I really appreciate his thoughts on not imposing personal opinion to a player and having him reach his own conclusion. That's something rarely seen in the industry, specially from western developers.
***** Saying no offense before calling someone stupid seems counterintuitive don't you think? I'm not a 'Yoko Taro' fan Automaat is the only game of his I've played and I only played it because Platinum's name is attached. I did not say a word about Yoko being a fantastical genius in storytelling and game design. All of his games prior to Automata look jank as shit and are repetitive for the most part. I tossed a compliment his way because not imposing opinions is a quality I wish I saw more of in story driven games. I don't think you even know what I'm referring to with that. I don't mean imposing what a character conveys to the player to do in a situation, I mean it in the sense of what the developer is trying to say with his story and how he is presenting it. He does a good job at that, better than most games I've played in the last few years.
Oh c'mon... don't attack anyone who like games from Taro, blindly and accusing them like an isolated otaku's without life. At 90's no one very hostile towards other like this.
+Sakaar Its debatable, however mostly no. If you really played them all and really deeply learn them you will know. Yoko Taro left a lot of space for players to imagine. Specially, all his games don't directly continue or prequel to each other. All of theory on internet I read has few flaw and do not support whole structure itself completely. So does in each sub-story itself and setting. Just simply say to you, no offense, stupid that without actually understand the meaning behind the view and loudly present your ignorance is pretty unbearable.
Man, i would hella listen to a 10 hour narration from Yoko Taro, his voice is so soothing, mixed with some chill background music and his philosophical ideas, it'll be like a dream come true xD
All praise Saito-sama, our lord and saviour! He managed to force these soulless corporates to greenlight development of this gem after commercial flop that was first Nier.

Despite being a director, working with large companies, earning himself both money and reputation, he still don the Emil mask and claim that he did not do much at all. lol I may have rambled a bit too long over a mask, but that's how I feel about this guy. Hell, it may not even be symbolizing anything, but I like to keep that idea in my head anyways.
I know this game has a fan base but man i feel its underrated. Just the soundtrack alone is so stunning, maybe the most beautiful soundtrack ive ever heared.
I would suggest that it must stay like this because, i feel that this channel do not deserves some lambda public...maybe i'm wrong and pretentious but i really think that.

I'm with you, I'm a little younger than you, but Nier Replicant completely redefined what games can do with storytelling to me. I've played all those other games people have said have good stories and they've all been horrible to be honest. I haven't felt anything like this in a video game since I played Half-Life 2 in my high school years. Over the past two weeks, I've slowly come to the realization that Replicant may be my favorite game of all time. There's certainly games with better combat, but I don't think I've ever felt this way over any piece of fiction in my life, and I digest a lot of fiction, mostly through books and television.
"But i feel they don't need me" He says, but i think that the reason the developers at platinum have been able to come up with so many ideas is because of Yoko Taro and his game's influence and because in NieR they can put things that would be outrageous in any other game.
His statement about wanting to do different things and keep it interesting with new ideas is why I loved Automata. Even till the very end at the final boss sequence, something new is just thrown at your lap and you're just enraptured by it... It's fantastic.

I appreciate how toco toco take the time to shoot in a way that really compliments the heart of what yoko taro is getting across. A funny, yet somber guy who does a lot of thinking and feeling.
This guy is my role model, I look up to him a lot. He is a simple man, who lives a simple life, doing whatever he believe is more meaningful. Other than his skill in game making, he says he has nothing else really special about him. That is exactly what I find so special about him. The ability to do so much while just being “Simple”. Not to mention, there is a lot of things I feel as I have in common with Yoko Taro (except for game making skills). One day I will make a game if my own.
11:30 - Wow, that was deep. As he talked about the next generation taking over and then Takahisa Taura takes off the mask as it was him. 12:02 - Hey, what a liar! He said he doesn't do workout! :)
This is exactly what I needed before starting my second full replay of Nier: Automata. I've gone through all the collectible lore writings in the game then went through with ending E, deleting my 100% progress save after keeping it for 2 years. Now that I've gotten into the creator's head a little more, I can truly enjoy the game on another level with this new play through as I peel away the layers and layers of this game.
Quality as always toco toco. Hopelly you guys start getting more and more recognition in the future. I know I'll do my part and share these videos with as many people as I know.
Fun story. I never had a gaming console. The end. And I played NieR replicant only recently when it came out in steam. The loading screens there, it is pages from the main character's sister's diary. And one of those saying: "6th of June. Today is [charcterName] birthday, but he's not here. So I just had a party by myself!" I thought "Hah, what I nice touch, they took my birthday from steam". But I read some articles afterward and no, the game is not taking that date from steam. Originally developers from Cavia put Yoko Taro's birthday there as a placeholder. And it ended up in the final release )
Yoko Taro is a genius, above-average thinking about game development. IM very impressed. He made a game that I was never properly prepared for (I've been playing games for over 20 years).
I really like how his works leads to varying interpretations, dependent on the player itself given that everyone went through the same experience. And I really respect that he doesn't impose on how it should be or what's right or wrong, making it more personal for the player's experience. And with that he became my favorite game director. Also thank you toco toco for this interview/mini documentary. I enjoyed it. Again. lol
Awesome interview as always. Would really love to see Taro working on more big SE games, maybe even a Final Fantasy entry at some point. If you guys could get a hold of Tetsuya Nomura for one of these interview, it would be mega awesome!
As far as Taro goes, it'd probably have to be a not overly crowded place with alcohol. Being hyper reclusive and liking to get drunk are two prominent traits to Taro, so much so that he makes jokes around them. Like when he apologized to Germany for not being able to visit in person due to his liver acting up, and saying 'if I went there, all I'd do is drink your beer and eat your fancy sausages, so what's the point if I can't?'
Amazing video, love the footage. Did anybody else notice a lot of the places this was filmed are also in the yakuza games, specifically Dotenbori? This is a crossover I can get behind lol
I really enjoyed this interview. His thought process is really interesting and having played his games I can't say they definitely leave the player in turmoil.
I rewatch this every week to get inspiration because I want to go to game dev and my tutor in a way is Yoko Taro it's really inspiring to listen to this and think about future that awaites me even if it's not going to be so bright
I really like the way Yoko Taro sees things. That's so refreshing and cool to hear people like him. I feel like this is the kind of person I could speak with all night about stuff that people usually don't care
"Dubito ergo sum" One of the most inspiring people out there. I became interested when, reading reviews of NieR Automata, people kept talking about him as "crazy". After watching some of his interviews, for the little I can understand about someone from a 20 min video, I don't consider him crazy at all. Just an incredibly unique visionaire. If anything, I wish anyone would be as "crazy" as him, and kept doubting everything they think to know, before imposing to others in a desperate try to hide their own fear of nothingness. If you just see the awkwardness of his social behaviour, and not the depth of his mind, then you're not doubting, just watching. Keep doubting, people, and maybe we will not become an extinct race.
Nice video. It's nice to see the other side of famous creators and of people working in less common industries, they are people just like everyone. The fact they took risks in order to do what they wanted to just makes me respect them more, also question myself "what can I do to live a more fulfilling life?". Your videos are very inspirational, nice job.
this videos are gold! really, thank you for sharing this. Yoko Taro is astonishing, his work is very inspiring and Nier Automata one of those games that keeps in your life.
Absolutely an amazing video, thank you so much for making this. Being able to see what one of my favorite creators does throughout his everyday life, and his thought processes on particular subjects in life and the gaming industry was awesome!
"For my games aswell, they don't have to be necessarily interesting, as long as it is meaningful to play them." My God, how I wish many "AAA" games would follow this logic instead of filling it with bland and meaningless side quests and content. Yoko Taro's games permeate the atmosphere and environment with so much meaning and there is just much more significance to immersing yourself in his stories than any other game I can think of. He really takes the interactive medium to the next level. In NieR: Automata I thought: "This is a game I can look back upon years from now and still appreciate it's quality." This is the game I can leave with some form of satisfaction in that I learned something; perhaps, all the better, I benefited from this game's meaningful messages and had become a better individual afterwards.
Yoko Taro, ure a genius. Im writing this comment after three weeks of playing the newest Nier:Replicant since premiere. I played Automata, this game is a one of the best i have ever played, but in Replicant, for now i finished only A ending and i literally cried so hard. Ure great, also like Hideo Kojima or Tetsuya Nomura (final fantasy series)
Yoko Taro you are my favorite Videogame Director EVER, and I love all your Games, nobody never could do so amazing games like You... Bless You Yoko Taro
Yoko Taro, Yosuke Saito, and Keichi Okabe - a match made in heaven! NieR Replicant is my favorite game ever, and hopefully, Yoko Taro continues to create games for years to come!
It's really nice to see him so serious and it was kind of inspiring. This really hit me hard and I was choked up the entire time listening him speak so passionately about what has quickly become my favorite game of all time.
Wow, that was really interesting and well-made! Thanks for this video. These guys created a very special game. So creative, fun and thought provoking. Yoko Taro is such an unique and funny person :-D And Taura is obviously very talented at directing too. Keep up the great work, guys! PlatinumGames and Taro should keep on working together.

Like when he apologized to Germany for not being able to visit in person due to his liver acting up, and saying 'if I went there, all I'd do is drink your beer and eat your fancy sausages, so what's the point if I can't?'
Another absolute home run, toco toco!
I'll try to share this as much as I can.
Thank you!
Amazing video, love the footage. Did anybody else notice a lot of the places this was filmed are also in the yakuza games, specifically Dotenbori? This is a crossover I can get behind lol
this is kind of men west game dev needs today to create not a money makers games but games with a soul.
Wow this was so somber and beautiful. The Nier:Automata OST at work.

I really like the way Yoko Taro sees things. That's so refreshing and cool to hear people like him. I feel like this is the kind of person I could speak with all night about stuff that people usually don't care

"Dubito ergo sum"
One of the most inspiring people out there.
Well. I was almost in tears after watching this. Brilliantly made, toco toco.
I love these video! Especially when they feature video game creators!!
OMG! Thank you so much for this valuable episode!

This is a great if not the best interview from Yoko Taro i've seen yet, thanks Toco Toco ! Great quality as always.
Thank you!
Absolutely an amazing video, thank you so much for making this. Being able to see what one of my favorite creators does throughout his everyday life, and his thought processes on particular subjects in life and the gaming industry was awesome!
Glad you liked it, thanks for the kind word.
Amazing interview - loved hearing his thoughts about game design.
Also, Yoko Taro is a man of culture - Vivaldi browser @ 5:44
Thank you!
Yoko Taro is one of those creatives who I put on the same level as Hayao Miyazaki.
"For my games aswell, they don't have to be necessarily interesting, as long as it is meaningful to play them."
My God, how I wish many "AAA" games would follow this logic instead of filling it with bland and meaningless side quests and content. Yoko Taro's games permeate the atmosphere and environment with so much meaning and there is just much more significance to immersing yourself in his stories than any other game I can think of. He really takes the interactive medium to the next level. In NieR: Automata I thought: "This is a game I can look back upon years from now and still appreciate it's quality."
This is the game I can leave with some form of satisfaction in that I learned something; perhaps, all the better, I benefited from this game's meaningful messages and had become a better individual afterwards.
I'm not getting this statement tbh. "Not interesting but meaningful", what's it mean lol
Toco toco tv, AKA, the best channel in UA-cam.
Thank you for the kind word and for your support!

It's really nice to see him so serious and it was kind of inspiring. This really hit me hard and I was choked up the entire time listening him speak so passionately about what has quickly become my favorite game of all time.
Yoko Taro is my spirit animal
Fantastic Episode! Keep it up!
'必要じゃない人'と言いましたけど、
こんな人こそ創作の大地の荒野の'道'でいってほしい。
(道はめにあたりやすいだけで他の道がもっと良いかも知らないけど、そして、歩く他の道無き面積と同じだけどただあそこにあって欲しい…)
かっこいい人。
