- MOOG threw down the challenge to buy a car for less than $10,000... catch is, the engine cannot be in the front of the car. He showed up with an old Volkswagen and I dragged out my JDM Hard Top Turbocharged Toyota MR2 that has been sitting around for a little too long. While MOOG gets cracking pulling apart carbies and working away on his weird old Volkswagen, I'm in my shed trying to work out how to sort out the rust, corrosion and broken parts that make up this 30 year old nugget.

So glad you went for this , remember with the stock headgasket its 0.9 bar max , 1.1 with a mhg... make sure you get a replacement heat shield aswell bro... updated intercooler next ? Or turbo from a rev 3 will bolt on directly 😉
Yeah, here in Canada, we call that "like new" condition.
Here in aus, if a cars rusted out, its usually quarter panels/doors, where dirt has blocked the drains and water/mud has sat and rusted from the inside.
Generally makes it easier when looking for a used car, as you can see the rust from 50m away...

When you came over to the UK for the meet back in 2013, I darted into work that morning to make the MAAAAAD license plate you can see in the background of the shots. When Marty said he would put it up in his garage, I was really excited. I looked out for it but never saw it in the videos. Now I realise he actually meant HIS garage and it's so awesome to see you still have it!

"The rust makes everything so difficult" - welcome to any country with some form of winter. Here in Germany this is just normal. All you can do is try to clean the car as often as possible to minimize rust buildup. But our workshops have to deal with this on a daily basis.
I'm so thankful that we don't get snow in most part of Australia, and when we do it isn't so much that we need to salt the roads. I'm driving a 15 year old Accord Euro, and there is just no rust anywhere on the car. I see all the pics and videos of European and American cars and just cringe!
And your best friends are: penetrating fluid, induction heater, torch, and so on .. :-P
Here in New Zealand, I can’t recall seeing major rust on a car since I was a kid. I’ve seen cars decades old with virtually none.
If it’s a major issue in cold, wet countries, shouldn’t manufacturers make EVERYTHING from treated or non-corroding materials? I always think nuts and bolts should be made from the very best alloy the entire vehicle has to offer...

I love how raw this episode is. Instead of just cutting to him taking stuff out we actually see bolts snapping and him drilling them out and looking miserable. I feel the effort going into this one!

I think that's because he's there 'alone'. when he and Moog work together they tend to put on more of a show and mack for the camera. When Moogs not around Marty usually gets more serious.

30 years old means its a Rev 1, the first generation which came with 14" wheels and extra snappy oversteer. It has the later Rev3 on rear lights though.
Atmospheric dump valves are not compatible with the vane type airflow meters, they can give poor idle and also hesitation on gear changes because dumping out metered air causes the engine to be overfuel.
Make sure you fit a new distributor cap and rotor arm, they get a hard life on this engine and worn parts drop a very noticeable amount of power.
Check when the timing belt was last changed, they are a bit of a ball ache to do due to limited access, so often ignored.
There are two smaller hard pipes located above the fuel tank for the coolant supply/return to the heater, it's very common for these to crack and cause a persistent loss of coolant.

also worth noting this is non-interference engine. so if belt snaps its not the end of the world

Sort of confused to how a blow off valve could effect idle in any way, when would it ever blow off air at idle?

Martin, you need to get yourself a 30 year old, rusted out Nissan GQ Patrol...
On a more useful note, get yourself a bunch of cheap, nasty, left hand twist (reverse twist) drill bits off ebay. Because they drill in reverse, when you're drilling out rusted out or seized bolts there's a good chance they'll bite into the bolt and thread it back out.
Everyone always says this, and i did always try to use them, but in the couple years i worked in a shop, i have only ever had 1 bolt come out with a reverse cut drill bit. I just use a nice and sharp bit now and drill it out.

Rusted, rounded, twisted, you name it, we have it.
Yeah. While working on my elderly Tercel I "lucked out". I only had to drill out five seized bolts and only had to use a torch twice to break loose brake nuts going into a nearly inaccessible brake line junction block. I also had to use JB Weld and mesh to repair about twenty rust holes in the rear brake backing plates. Piece of cake :(

i wanted to remove cv axles on my e46. as soon, as i saw the bolt, i gave up without giving a second thought to it. its an e-torx. with e-torx part rusted off. oh, and theres 12 of them.
@@HunterOfHalfLife That's a lot of bolts. They could be drilled out and helicoiled if necessary but that would be extremely painful and a lengthy job. Maybe you could just replace the half shafts and uprights? Pricy but if the rest of the car is good it might be worth considering.

Welcome to any mechanics life that works on cars in a snowy/salted area. Just did the transmission on my Speed3 yesterday and I would believe I had more rust than dirt on me.
Everyone is talking rust, but I'm just listening to Marty and be amazed by how professional he sounds throughout the start. Marty and Moog really have made MCM from two blokes working in their driveway to a TV show. I like this much better than any of the "car" shows like "Pimp my Ride", "Overhaulin" or the short-lived Discovery Channel shows.

PeteM , still, having a car on the hoist when you’re working on the top is so much better as you don’t have to bend over as much and fuck your back.
There's a trick to using hoists for better access into engine bays like this. Take the wheels off. Lower it either all the way or until the brakes almost touch the ground, whichever comes first.

Welcome to any car that’s lived most of it’s life in Virginia, USA.. I’ve fought hard to reach bolts for hours before because you just can’t get them loose without breaking something or dropping or lifting motors.

As an MR2 owner, I highly recommend taking the time to replace the hoses from hell, since you had to pull the turbo.

And all of the other hoses as well, I recently badly hurt the engine in my Group A Celica after a hose from the water rail to the throttle body burst letting all of the coolant to escape.
I found that the seal in the distributer had been leaking oil over 3 hoses, Water hoses do not like oil! Cracked block, cooked head!
I've never rolled my eyes more at one of your videos. 30 year old cars literally don't even exist around here. You just dropped a dump pipe and didn't have to blow the head off a single one with an oxy-acetylene torch. You have it easy.

My 1972 Rover is held together with rust, we can't all live in California or Australia sadly. When i watch people like Roadkill and they say "it's pretty rotten" i just think they really have no idea what rot is

That car is in good shape compared to what we have in the northern states of the USA, I have lived in Michigan all my life, that's 70 plus years. Road salt is the 'go to' thing when it snows to try and clear the roads. That mostly works, but what it really works on is the car bodies, rusting them out. I have a 1998 GMC pick up truck, the power train is in decent shape for it's age but the body is very rusty. So if you don't live where you have to put up with that, count your self blessed.
Thanks for showing the frustration of a petrolhead who lives in a "rustbelt". It's also interesting to read comments from people in other parts of the world who also suffer from this. Living in Wisconsin in the States its practically a constant battle unless you have a summer only vehicle. I feel your pain Marty. Keep going though, you're doing great. I know very little about the MR2 but it looks to be pretty cool once you get it sorted.

@@Tomfez92 I had a mk1 MX5 before hand and I was going to buy a mk2 then saw this mr2 resprayed in Focus RS green and couldn't resist buying it lol, i've yet to work on it though it's only been a week haha. But yeah old Toyota engines are bullet proof I owned a Celica a few years ago with the 3SGE engine too.

@@mightycarmods don't often comment and I feel like I'm being "that guy" but would hate for you do potentially have to rip the engine bay apart again.. it's extremely common for the wastegate flapper to have clearance issues and usually ends up hitting on alot of generic 3 inch dump pipes for these cars causing boost control issues :/ I only speak from unfortunate experience, worth test fitting with the wastegate actuator rod circlip off and making sure you still get full movement, I know Brooks Racing Development do a dump pipe that 100% clears if you do run into issues
Don't give up, every canadian and coastal kid is about to tell you how minimal rust that is and how we have it waaay worse. Love the show mates
Kinda interesting to see an Aussies perspective on rust. I am from the East Coast of Canada and I have worked on worst rust from a vehicle 5 years old. 10 year old vehicles in my province, for example old cavaliers would have a rusted out rear sub frame, that would need to be replaced and would obviously fail our provincial inspection. When living in New Zealand, the small or no existent amount of rust(like the rust shown in this video) made me finally enjoy doing mechanics. Two best friends of any Mechanic who is surrounded by the atlantic ocean on all sides, salts roads and has snow in the winter, plus -25 degree celsius days is a oxy acetylene torch and a hammer.

This is what we deal with on cars that sit outside in the winter here in Wisconsin, USA! Sorry you have to deal with that! By the way, ANYONE can replace shiny new pieces on cars. It takes skill to repair old rusty things like this. I can't wait to see what you do with this when it's done. I can tell you, any time I pull something off of my car, it gets cleaned and possibly painted before it goes back in. LOVE THE CHANNEL!

My 96 MR2 which was UK spec N/A from ireland, even worse, the entire body was just pure rust hidden by nice paint lmao... also took a garage 4 solid days to change the clutch because everything was so rusty hahaha
@@_Professor_Oak Can confirm, but only recently when gretchen whitmer and her cronies raised the fuel tax here. Before, we waited for winter to fill in the potholes and make the highways smoother. Key word being highways...which is so unbearably sad...

@@Opsecable Note wording "new" would you still do it like that now? :D With out hoist, sure might be easier, but with one might as well to check areas you cannot get when engine is in the car.
@@Opsecable A 30 year old car/engine might need a lot of other work done to it as well, so it often makes sense to just drop the whole engine to adress several issues at once. I did replace the clutch on my sw20 turbo without removing the engine, but in hinsight, I might as well just have removed the whole engine to give it a proper refresh.

I bought an identical MR2, black, hardtop, JDM import, turbo, 1989, sw20 about a month before MCM started this series. I recently upgraded the exhaust, and finished it about 1 week ago, adding in a nice custom 5zigen setup. Watching this video gave me painful deja vu... I can say that I didn't have many rusty parts, just all the bolts took hours to get off. Hours and hours.
thanks for making this video, Marty. In my neck of the woods, there are three rules to wrenching:
1. if you don't have an oxyacetylene kit just go home
2. if you need help on a project tell everyone you bought the car in California
3. used motor oil works well as a rust preventative undercoating for your car
3b. mechanics hate it when people use oil undercoating
Thanks for the episode. I like Marty's touch and this documentary format a lot. I wish if only it could be longer. Seeing the how-tos and having voice overs is excellent. The moon buggy is fun and all, but the guts of the MR2 this is very interesting to see. Too bad you two do not work together on this serie.

Agreed - Marty hosts exceptionally well on his own, the pacing of the video is excellent, whoever's on the camera is framing the shots really well, and there's no back-and-forth that goes on and on until it ceases to be amusing...

This might actually be the first time Marty said Moog in an MCM video. They made a point about this not too long ago in another video.

Got a zz30 and love the thing. You never know if you're going to die on a rainy day and it's a PIA to work on, already replaced the engine. With no car lift it was "fun" using the engine hoist to lift the car off the engine. Building a turbo motor for it so I'll get to do the whole thing again. Totally worth the hassle. One of the best handling back road/mountain runners I've had and in my area you rarely see any kind of MR2. I like the design of the sw20 better, but I've got no regrets getting my zz30. I look forward to seeing more of what you do with this car in upcoming videos
Pretty much sums up my mk1 MR2 experience. I had it for 8 years and loved it dearly, but there was no end to the worn out and rusted parts fighting you. No matter how many I replaced, there were always more. Jumping into a new car has been an amazingly fresh experience.
6:53 i always tap rusty/old bolts on the head with a hammer before trying to turn them either way. this tends to break the rust, not the bolt.
Never had this work. Ever. Fire on the other hand. Fuckin glorius.

I love those MR2's & feel for you with regards to the rust. I used to have an FJ80 that came from Vermont and I believe was backed into a snowbank for a winter. When I got it, the rear axle was held on by the panhard bar (no joke).

Protip:
Change the Hose from hell whenever you're in that area of the motor
Also, removing the boot-lid allows you to work on the engine bay from inside the trunk, its much easier than dangling from one side of the car

In all the years I had my mr2 turbo I never thought of this 😂 not that it ever needed much work it was a pretty reliable car for the most part.
I loved my MR2 and have a patina of nostalgia surrounding that time in my life, but I remember every bolt being completely trashed.

Hahaha. This is oh so familiar. We have a 1992 Celica GTS that we had to do some heavy work on... If you think that's rusty, you'll cry after you see what we had to go through. Thanks for the awesome vid!

The thought of cars not rusting in Australia is mind blowing! Here in Wales that MR2 would be described as rust free! At the moment I'm trying to find time to weld my Volvo up, I've got two holes in the floor each about the size of your shoe.

I really miss my old mr2 turbo. But every time I see videos of mr2s and people working on it, I’m glad I sold it.
10 or 15 years ago this would've been a dream... I wouldn't touch an AW11 or SW20 MR2 now. Great video and good luck👍
After working on MR2 turbos as a specialist for nearly 20 years it's funny to read the comments of people. If MCM reached out i would just send them everything they needed to do up this car proper. I have pretty much everything needed to make this car 400whp on the shelf ready to go. But since they won't read this, I guess we will have to sit through the suffering.
Some advice/observations:
1. the stock turbo on that motor is nearly useless. At the very least it needs a compressor upgrade if not a complete replacement to make much more than 200whp. An upgraded compressor wheel can net an easy 50whp more, but going to a modern turbo can make much much more. Even a Gen3 3sgte turbo (aka CT20b) would be a massive improvement.
2. The ebay downpipe you're installing doesn't fit right top to bottom (to be expected given the source), but you should gasket match the downpipe to the original gasket so the wastegate won't get hung up and not open (leading to uncontrolled overboost).
3. While in there with the turbo and downpipe off, you should change the hose from hell (water hose behind the catalytic converter on the engine block with heat insulation on it), and ideally the other hose on the oil cooler while you're there (Hose from hell on earth).
4. As others have mentioned check the heater lines above the gas tank right behind the heat sheilds for cracking at the rear brackets. If they are cracked - repair requires removing the fuel tank (so you may as well install a new fuel pump).
5. the other weak link of this motor is the head gasket -- plan to upgrade with a multi-layer steel and ARP head studs.
6. While the transaxle (E153 btw) is drained, pull one of the axles out and look in side for the bar running across the axle path in the middle of the diff -- if it's there you have the OEM LSD. If it a disk with a hole larger enough for a 3/8" extension to pass through, it's the open diff.
7. inexpensive upgrade to the fuel injectors is to swap in a set of Supra 550cc or "Gen 3" 3SGTE 540cc injectors into the stock Gen2 3sgte rail. Only upgrade the injectors if you're changing to a programmable EMS like Haltech, Link, etc.
8. The factory ecu will fuel cut at about 11psi (maybe a little higher as it's JDM) assuming you're retaining the factory ecu before ditching that and going to a Haltech (the only ecu available in Australia I guess). If factory Gen2 ecu is in the loop (part number 89661-17330, 17331, or 17332) you'll need to bypass the fuel cut by unplugging the hose to the factory map sensor and leaving the MAP sensor open to atmosphere while capping the port at the intake manifold. Overboost and fuel cut will show up as code 34 on the stock ecu.
9. Check for engine codes while in diagnostic mode (diagnostic mode is entered by having TE1 and E1 jumpered together in the rear diagnostic connector in the engine bay with key turned to "on" position). Pray you don't have code 52.

On my '93 I remember as a kid, doing anything in the turbo region just meant pulling the exhaust then manifold/turbo/downpipe. I left all the heat shielding off and used a jethot coating to contain the heat. It worked. An ALMOST bigger reason for upgrading the exhaust, removing the cat and the aforementioned thermal coating (there were a lot of bolts holding all those heat-shields in place) was to reduce the pain in the ass of working on it.
Just have to say you guys are awesome and thanks for inspiring me to get my lazy ass back in the garage to work on my own rust old nugget
