I do feel the need to point out that this really isn't my best work, while I don't think PewDiePie made good points in his video, I do like the dude and in retrospect vilify him way too much with some fairly weak arguments in this video. One thing I have to say is, I didn't care when Loki died. Because he'd already died twice and came back fine.
So I honestly thought he'd do the same after infinity war, considering the way he died was honestly insulting to his character. I mean, he's the god of mischief for crying out loud, he wouldn't just go up to the guy who just beat the goddamn Hulk into the ground with nothing but a knife.
He'd play it smart, fake his death, and come back to wreck Thanos' shit when he had the chance. But, nope. He just died in the stupidest way possible.

Also literally anything is either overrated or underrated: the public community tends to exaggerate everything. If something is initially viewed as bad (even if it isn't), it will be repeated so often that the opinion will avalanche into it being atrocious. If something is initially viewed as good, it will eventually be worshipped as a divine entity. The exaggeration only dies down and usually turns mildly positive either way after a relative while when something new that applies to the same concept takes over, like the Star Wars Prequels thanks to the Sequels.

    I hate breathing.
Too many people breathe, and they're just so passionate about it. It borders on creepy just how excited people get about breathing.
Not to mention that breathing is just so formulaic. You expand and contract your lungs, there just isn't anything to it at all. I'm just tired of doing the same thing over and over again.
And think about all of the people who do horrible things, like murder and terrorism. THEY BREATHE! It's damaging! I guarantee that if all of us just stopped breathing, there wouldn't be any crimes anymore. No one will get bullied or kidnapped or robbed if no one breathed.
What about all of those people that have trouble breathing? Asthmatics shouldn't have to look at other people and be jealous that they can breathe better.
Oh, and don't even get me started on the reasons people breathe. They do it, to LIVE. I know right? How selfish is it that people breathe for its actual purpose? Can't we all just do it for other reasons?

You see a grenade on the floor and yours, as well as everyone elses first instinct is to run away, but Cap dives on the grenade to stop the blast from killing anyone else/ Would you sacrifice yourself in order to save 5 other people? Not to mention the acting of Chris in that scene, from his expression you really get the feeling that he's less than a second away from being blown to pieces, I can onlly imagine the tension in his mind while he's waiting for that explosion.

There are just a whole lot of examples, where the impressiveness of CGI makes a movie look less realistic. Not all CGI is bad. By no means. But sometimes it just doesn't fit the scenes or come off as a cheap way to hide illogical decisions. A good example are the Hobbit movies: The CGI was impressive, but made the orc soldiers look so well equipped and cool that it broke the immersion. We got a great looking CGI fight, that made no sense in the world's logic. CGI often leads to the decision to make something look cooler than it should look like and therefore realistically unrealistic. The battle scenes of most Avenger's movies are very impressive, but at the same time so shallow and dragged out. Way too much hitting CGI drones and bantering imho. Large scale battles but not much strategical movement shown. I don't need to see superheroes beating the crap out of things/people, that stand no chance against them, for a long period of time. I can see why it is entertaining. It is as entertaining as a good hack'n'slash game. I couldn't care less about those impressive CGI scenery and enemies, when there is not much more meaning to them than looking cool or impressive, though. For me such scenes are beyond boring. I almost slept throughout Age of Ultron. Sometimes I would wish for a more minimalistic approach including CGI. Don't use it to flex muscles. Use it, when it is needed to effectively tell a story.

The problem that Pewdiepie was most likely trying to point is that most marvel movies core message is quite shallow in comparison to anime's... Sure, they are still relevant, and that's probably their focus, corruption, family issues, etc. But still, it's nothing we don't know already right?
Anime on the other hand, usually focus much more on psychological issues rather than existing ones, Fate & Stay Night for example, the core message of it is that "being a hero is fucking dumb", sounds weird, right? But they're absolutely right, self sacrifice isn't always the solution and it is proved through the series multiple times. That kind of morality was mind blowing to a younger me and I can easily say, no Marvel movies has ever had that depth in them... Hell, even Naruto, which is a poorly written story has more depth in it, as Sasuke betrayal of his country was actually onto something, because that allowed him to be strong enough to do shit on the series...

I'm pretty sure not that many MCU films even follow Felix's formula. Correct me if I'm misremembering anything, but IIRC:
Iron Man: hero and villain don't have powers, hero wants to atone, and the villain wants profit through weapons manufacturing. Only really peace and destruction if you water the motivations down three or four times.
Incredible Hulk: hero wants to be normal, villain wants power.
Iron Man 2: hero wants to not die, villain wants revenge, still no powers.
Thor: hero wants his powers back, villain wants to prove his worth as Odin's son which leads to genocide.
Captain America 1: yeah this one follows Felix's formula, but the fact that it's the 5th MCU film and the only one that inarguably follows every part of Felix's formula is telling.
Avengers: half the heroes don't have powers, villain wants conquest, and at least one of the heroes just wants his brother back.
Iron Man 3: the villain has powers, hero doesn't, villain wants revenge and hero wants to quell his anxiety.
Thor 2: another one that I'll concede to Felix (and I'm one of five people that actually likes Thor the dark world), Malekith wants to end the world and Thor wants to stop that (though also wants to avenge his mom and brother).
Captain America 2: the villains don't have powers (Winter soldier doesn't count, he was a victim, and the main villain was still Pierce), villains want control through engineering safety, the hero wants freedom though has to add more conflict to the world in order to do so.
Guardians: villain wants destruction, heroes want profit and later to "give a shit", so I guess that counts. Although only one of the Guardians has powers.
Avengers 2: villain wants the earth to grow stronger initially through making humanity evolve and then just killing humanity and making him and his robots the top dogs. Heroes want to stop him and prove that they are ultimately good for the world despite the villains claims of them causing stagnation.
Ant Man: no powers, villain wants profit, and the hero wants to be in his daughters life.
Captain America 3: villain has no powers, never fights the heroes, wants revenge, and wins. Heroes want a bunch of things, ranging from atonement to justice to stability amongst themselves, and like half of them still don't have powers.
Doctor Strange: hero earns his shit like Naruto (I'll just be brief about how Naruto qualifies for earning his stuff by Jay's standards, but not Felix's), and doesn't beat the villain, he wins through annoying the villain who wants dominance.
Guardians 2: Ego wants dominance, Guardians want to stop him. I guess this counts but it overlooks a lot of the more interesting parts of Guardians 2, showing just how shallow this formula is.
Spider-Man Homecoming: hero wants to prove his worth, villain wants to make and sell weapons on the black market and doesn't have powers.
Thor 3: hero wants peace, villain wants conquest, though it's made clear Hela is a combat fetishist. Thor doesn't beat her though, he has to summon Armageddon to stop her.
Black Panther: hero wants peace, villain wants dominance through immense violence, but this overlooks that the villain was created because of the type of society the hero inhabits and the hero learns from the villain and takes steps to prevent more Kilmongers from existing in the future.
Avengers 3: the heroes and villain both want to save the universe, but the villains believes mass death is the answer and the heroes don't want that.
I'm gonna stop here because this comment is long enough and I've proved my point that this formula doesn't even really apply to that much of the MCU.

Avengers 4: Heroes want to bring back their dead allies and undo the damage villain caused. Villain... wants to destroy them, hey this one actually kinda lines up, if you ignore almost everything else about the movie.
Spider-Man 2: Hero just wants to enjoy his vacation and maybe not be pressured into filling the role of his dead mentor, Villains want revenge on the first movie's hero.

That to me is the biggest thing that nearly invalidates Pewdiepies opinion; he likes anime.
I'm not an anime fan, but from what I understand, anime, superhero movies, fantasy and scifi are very similar in their formula. They're all about the heros journey, and powers, be they magical or superhuman or technologically achieved.
And I can admit that I have no real reason why I don't like anime. I like fantasy stuff and superhero movies, but for some reason I just don't like anime. The problem with CGI is that few understand it, practical effects most people get, while for a lot of people just think of CGI as a "press a button to do anything" Which even if it is true, does it really have to take you out of the movie for you to like the movie?

The CGI is also really good. Sure, it will become dated, but for now, it's pretty spot on.
I think it's just when someone knows it's CG, they can't suspend their disbelief enough because they lack creativity or investment in the story. I think everyone can agree, no matter how bad a film's special effects are, if they story is good, the film is good. • @kylemorello4787
      @kylemorello4787 4 роки тому +9

Seriously though, totally agree. Honestly, most of my personal favorite live action movies and shows are the ones that feel like animated movies and shows (except live action adaptations of cartoons, with some exceptions). These projects can allow audiences to go into worlds that you wouldn't be able to go into in real life, while eerily reflecting ours. In other words, as they say in the Simpsons: "You want a down to earth show- that's off the wall and filled with magic space robots?"
THIS is why I love the MCU. In 12 years we have met Gods who's worth a symbolized by hammers, a raccoon that likes guns raising a tree that talks like a Pokemon, a man that can turn into a muscle bound monster, a man and a women that can change their sizes, and a giant purple alien that somehow manages to be both terrifying and sympathetic, in a series that somehow manages to pull at our heartstrings and make us laugh at the same time! To me, that's amazing storytelling. Maybe not as nuanced as The Godfather, Saving Private Ryan, or To Kill a Mockingbird, but still impressive and deserving of every praise they get.
Also, doesn't PewDiePie do Let's Plays? Video games are CGI.

My biggest problem was Pewdiepie's description of the plot of Marvel movies, because it's the same with most movies, shows, books, plays, etc. Mostly every story follows some form the "Hero's Journey" plot map because it works and that's what people want to see.
They follow the same basic steps: 1. Call to Adventure 2. Acceptance of call (most of the time after an initial refusal of the call) 3. Meeting the mentor 4. Crossing the threshold 5. Rising Action 6. Defeat, Death and Rebirth (can be literal or figurative death and rebirth) 7. Atonement 8. Journey Home. Examples of other non-Marvel movies/stories/authors that follow this: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings/Hobbit, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, The Wizard of Oz, Chronicles of Narnia, Moby Dick, Jane Eyre, Charles Dickins, Mark Twain, Stephen King etc.
It's a long tangent, I know, but it just doesn't make sense to call out one studio or genre for using the same basic plot map that appears in most (if not all) of the popular stories told around the world.

    • @ScarletWhisper13
      @ScarletWhisper13 6 років тому +19

@@anti1training I guess I'm not sure what you mean that a foreign scientist gave Tony Stark his ability. Iron Man doesn't have any abilities, he has a suit that he built (he certainly had help building that first suit but that scientist - or doctor in the movie - didn't give him the suit, or the design or the mind to build it). Afterwards Stark built the sleeker design that he keeps improving without the help of any foreign scientist. If you're talking about the arc reactor in his chest then that's not an ability that's just saving Stark's life. Even then the doctor (in the mcu) hooked him up to a car battery and the Stark converted what the doctor did into the arc reactor. I'm only going off of the mcu because that's what I know and that's what Pewdiepie was discussing. I'm not saying that there are absolutely no similarities, what I'm saying is that it would make more sense if Pewdiepie criticized all storytellers for using the same basic plot map - not just Marvel.

Yeah as MovieBob says, EVERYTHING that happens to characters in any story can be undone at the whim of the writers, that's fiction. Sure temporarily killing people off is a tiresome trope in the comic books, but not in comic book movies, that was novel to see they actually did it. They did a great job of selling it, of making us think right up to the last second it might not actually happen or not in this movie, and we can guess from who was left alive and the fact this is the swan song for the OG Avengers, that they won't all survive whatever it takes to bring everyone else back.
It's also the height of trying to look smart without actually thinking things through to be like "Hurr Durr they obviously aren't killing off Black Panther and SpiderMan!" Really? You were on board with thinking that KILLING HALF THE UNIVERSE would be the new status quo until a few specific characters died? Really? You thought the next 10 years of MCU movies would be a post-apocalyptic hellscape, people trying to process the insanity of what happened and find a reason to carry on living, and the galactic neighborhood around Earth being invaded on a daily basis by hyper-advanced civilizations that traced the source of the event here and are hell-bent on revenge?

"It's always good guy wants peace and bad guy wants destruction. They're all the same." That's like describing comedy movies as "funny stuff happens." With vagueness like that, no shit, but that ignores what makes the movies different. It's the characters, story points, pacing, direction, writing, and all kinds of other shit. Doctor Strange and Captain America: The First Avenger for example aren't even close to the same movie outside of that "good guy wants peace, bad guy want destruction" bullshit. Also what about the Guardians of the Galaxy? They don't really fall under "good guy wants peace." They're only the good guys for selfish reasons unless you count Groot. Sure they do become less selfish at the end of the movie but for the most part they were in it for themselves.
Special effects have been around for as long as movies have been made. The truck flip in The Dark Knight, which by the way is "good guy wants peace, bad guy wants destruction", is a special effect. Special effects isn't the problem, it's their result. Let's look at Thanos for example. He looks amazing and he's entirely CGI. Yeah, if it looks like shit it's kind of a problem but if it looks good then how's it a problem. I agree that CGI should only be used when practical effects are impossible for what you're trying to achieve but sometimes CGI is necessary. Could you imagine how shitty Iron Man would look if done with only practical effects?
Every fandom has "cultists" and Marvel is one of the biggest fandoms there is so no shit people were fucking excited for the next Marvel movie. I know this happened 10 months after his video, but that New Zealand mosque shooter said "Subscribe to PewDiePie" before shooting the mosque up so PewDiePie clearly has actual cultists fans, it's fucking ironic.
So having people to look up to fictional characters leaves a negative impact? Who the fuck idolizes superheroes for their powers anyway? Maybe a small child, but other than that I can't think of anyone. I don't idolize Captain America because he's super strong and has a cool shield, I idolize him because he's courageous.
What does Michelle Obama, or anyone for that matter, have to do with fucking anything? Yeah, a bunch of black people got excited for Black Panther because they were getting a black superhero movie. What's your point, PewD's? That's like arguing that Last Jedi is bad and instead of going after the writing, direction, plot holes, and other shit that actually matters in a fucking movie, you use comments by SJWs calling you sexist for not liking the movie. That has nothing to do with fucking anything.

The reason black panther is cool is because now, kids growing up have a black hero, (scratch that, a CAST of black heroes) they can have and look up to who are super popular. "I don't have to look as hard as my dad did for characters who look like me."

Also, Blue Beetle, Bane, So Diablo, El Dorado, Firebrand, Iman, Agony, Armadillo, Cheetah, Darwin, and many others are Latino. And there were alot of black superheroes, but my point is, there weren't that many minority superheroes that were well known enough for anyone to know who I was when I dressed up as them. Yes, I'm aware that anyone "can" dress up as a fictional character, but if there's a black Thor, or a white Black panther, Immediately, you don't associate them with the character, you associate them with a racially incorrect VERSION of the character. All I'm saying is, having racially diverse superheroes is a good thing. One, because there are a million of them in the comics, and they're all cool characters, so why shouldn't they get theatrical releases? And Two, because its a lot more believable to see black Latino Asian etc superheroes, than "Oh hey people have superpowers but they're mostly just white guys".

I get your point completely. When ï was growing up, I felt a type of diconnect while dressing up as characters that i liked but didnt resemble and I loved, LOVED the hype for black panther, especially because I live in England and society here goes out of its way to not cause a scene (except during the world cup, still emotional about it, don't @ me) and I didn't expect the hype to affect us across the pond but I was wrong. I dunno. I'm rambling, ignore me. Forget I said anything.

So flipping a truck is more impressive than: digitally creating an entire city so well that most people didn't realize it was digital, Bucky swiping that motorcycle in Civil War (which was 100% practical), the INCREDIBLY realistic costumes and armors of the characters, the endless numbers of action stunts done by the cast, and the passionately detailed bits of the totally CGI characters.

14:22 A Superhero movies that tackles what really is good and what is evil? Captain America Winter Soldier and Civil War. Between the government and One’s own sense of justice. The fact that Shield a force of good was infiltrated by Hydra or how the Avengers heroic actions caused a lot of lives even made villains. The whole thing with Bucky struggling between the evil hes done when he was brainwashed. Black Panther as well in fact learning from the villain and rejecting the old ways of his ancestors which he thought to be good. In fact no other superhero movie is comparable.
Also to an earlier point Doctor Strange and Iron Man worked hard for their powers plus the Guardians, Black Widow and Hawkeye are mostly just well trained fighters exception on Guardians Mantis and Groot.
Pewdipie has maybe watch some of the movies once or twice with mostly disinterest not catching on to themes. He acts like its “controversial” to hate on Marvel when its actually pretty common. People are gonna react if you say you dont like or hate something they love it’s natural.
