There's a good reason Gwen 10 exists. When this aired in Japan, the fans *ADORED* Gwen, as she fit the _tsundere_ archetype to a T. This episode is meant to be a sort of stealth pilot in case Japan ever decided to make their own adaptation, like they did with Powerpuff Girls and Lilo and Stitch.
It'd be neat to see Japan do their own Ben 10, just to see what excruciatingly ENGRISH names they end up coming up with. Better yet, maybe they'll name some alien Hellhound and it gets dubbed into English as Hotdog.
I feel like this episode could have been the perfect setup for Race against time. What if this version of Ben couldn't live with the fact that he lost his hero life so he spent the rest of his life trying to get back to his universe and eventually became Eon. His motivation could have been to exact his revenge on Ben Prime for "stealing" the life he should have had by stealing Ben's Omnitrix. He could even blame Paradox for what happened to him in this episode. I don't know, it seems easier than having him be some weird alien and then retconning it. I'm just spitballing tho.
I also like the idea of Eon being a version of Ben who wasn't able to stop the Omnitrix from self destructing (he would have the Chronian DNA to protect himself, but not everyone else).
Eon being a version of Ben is already such a weird premise. Why is this one version of Ben randomly a Chronian when all the other versions of Ben are Human?
@@emperortgp2424 I've always had the theory that Chronians are evolved/mutated Humans from an alternant timeline where humanity discovered secrets of time-travel and Eon is Ben from that timeline.
I imagine that with Max's secret being revealed so early, Ben is probably gonna get Plumber training straight ahead, and we might have a Gadget-Hero version of him. If Omniverse did some things right, it's showing that no matter what, a Ben will always have an opportunity to greatness.
I think there are two universes with Gwen 10, one where she looses the omnitrix to Max, and another in which she fills in the role of Ben. I feel like in both Ben could learn magic when facing against Hex, maybe even awakening his anodite spark.
19:56 - I think it's meant to show that while Vilgax got a significant strength buff from his cyborg form, he lost a lot of speed, so it's not necessarily a 1:1 improvement/match. The stronger slower version is more dangerous to Ben, who seems to have a much more brawler-focused style in his early days (as cyborg form can just shrug off anything he does and hit back harder), whereas what we see of Gwen seems to indicate that she has a better idea of how to use the forms as more than just "big punchy things" so a more agile opponent is a more dangerous opponent for her, a more proactive threat as opposed to reactive.
Cyborg Vilgax is basically a tank but normal Vilgax is a Lamborghini. An M1 Abrams can't beat a Lambo in a drag race but if you shot a Lambo with an RPG there would be nothing left other then a burning pile of metal.
Conceivably this Ben could've just been taken back to the prime timeline as unexpectedly as he was taken out of it. Maybe Prime Ben just disregarded all of this as a weird dream he had.
Like that time Young Ben got time-warped to the future in ultimate alien then got warped back and disregarded it as a dream? But that happened and affected the future, as that's why Ben trusts Kevin in Alien Force.

I feel like not many people talk about the fact that the ending monologue in "Gwen 10" about how there are "so many ways to tell a story" is said by Paradox. At least, it's implied. At the end of "And Then There Was Ben" Paradox says that exact line to Ben Prime as they're leaving No-Watch Ben's timeline.
@@deadaccount8054 well, I wouldn't say responsible, seeing how Paradox doesn't really interfere DIRECTLY with the timelines. And when he does, he 1) is making sure it goes the way it should, and 2) brings Ben Prime with him. It was more of Paradox just telling the origin of one of the infinite timelines that branches off of the Ben Prime timeline. I don't think he caused this timeline to occur, however, seeing as a future alternate Ben's mind gets put into a past alternate Ben's body, it would make sense to say Paradox isn't telling this story, but watching it unfold, to make sure it's fine, and nothing goes wrong with it. And when it ends on a high note, (i.e the Tennyson's defeating Vilgax) he decides not to interfere with this timeline, since it seems to be alright.

Gives me chills when Ben says “i don’t know what’s worse that I’ll never have the watch again or that your better with it than I ever was” I don’t like Gwen’s Aliens with hair
I honestly loved Gwen's reaction to him saying that too. Like she genuinely felt his pain and is probably when it really struck her that Ben was serious about things.
We've seen Eon send ben's personality earlier in the timeline in omniverse, and it shows that kid ben was fighting Eon, so it's quite possible that in an attempt to "absorb" a ben 10 as he does in ua he sends him in an entirely different timeline mentally. Or he even absorbs the original ben of that timeline and somehow sends ben prime's mind there. An explanation for this would be that, as they stopped Eon later, all the timelines he messed with were quickly turned to normal. So if this episode really does involve Eon somehow, it's possible it became undone later on
I've always felt that this episode would have been better if it was told from Gwen's perspective and Ben didn't have memories of his time with the Omnitrix, you know a proper "What if Gwen got the Omnitrix?" episode without trying to somehow tie it to the main timeline with some unexplained time-travel plotline that never get resolved. I'm also a little disappointed that they only did two "what if?" episodes in the series when there was so many stories they could of told, What if Vilgax got the Omnitrix? What if Kevin joined the Tennysons? What if Gwen kept the Charms of Bezel? What if Ben kept the Master Control? etc.
Or just What if Ben had "the spark" and learned magic because really, it would be fairer that in a universe where Gwen has the Omnitrix, Ben should be allowed to use magic and be an Anodite.
I love the idea of Kevin joining them earlier, maybe Max talks to kevin that he knows a way to revert kevin to his normal self,And then slowly have Kevin be like Majin vegeta,He is bad but he regrets it
Perhaps it's something like this: Dreams are windows into alternate lives in the Multiverse. This Ben never time traveled back like he said, instead, he dreamt and experienced the events of the prime timeline, making him think he's the prime variant, but it was actually another universe that he dreamt into
With the Omnitrix: Ben: Hero disposition - brave, confident and crafty. Gwen: Well-honed powers, a natural. Max: Less powerful since he’s older but makes up for it by pulling out tricks using crazy alien biology factoids. Without the Omnitrix: Max: Weirdly strong and competent, very experienced with alien weaponry. Gwen: Magic. Enough said. Ben: With no Omnitrix to take all his attention, hoards and tinkers with alien tech. Fond of hoverboards and laser-swords.
19:46. I think the reason that regular Vilgax is quicker and more agile than his Cyborg counterpart is that all the cyborg and muscle manipulation additions he has in the Prime timeline added a lot of weight and bulk to his physique thus reducing his speed and reaction time
I do think Ben would be the best user of the omnitrix because Gwen is more responsible then Ben is and Max actually knows how alien technology works. Gwen being more responsible means that she'll spend less time goofing off with the omnitrix which means she'll spend less time in those aliens forms just playing with the powers and getting a better understanding of how they work. Think of it like when Ben was comparing his aliens spit. Is it stupid and immature? Yes but he might actually discover something else doing stupid stuff like that. As for Max since while I also apply the logic I applied for Gwen I'm also adding that since Max knows how alien technology works he'll be able to unlock aliens faster which means he'll spend less time with each individual alien and will miss transform less. This means he'll have the right alien for the right job which means he'll be in and out of alien form faster and won't discover a lot of things his grandkids would from just playing around and making mistakes. Not to mention that since he's older and no longer in his physical prime his aliens will quickly fall behind his grandkids aliens as they get older. 5 years down the line with the omnitrix Gwen and Ben would get stronger while Max would get weaker. A lot of my logic on this is the idea of a kid playing around and breaking his tools but then fixing them. He might be the worse choice at the start but as he gets older and matures a lot of that early playing around will give him a better understanding of how each works and by being limited to a set of tools to get a job done instead of having many he'll learn new ways to apply those tools others may not think of. So Ben starts out as the worse choice but as time goes on he becomes the best choice because of his flaws.
I’m wondering if Gwen 10 starts in a camp near Mt Rushmore. The different trees and it explains how Max had the anti-Vilgax blaster. He could have grabbed it before getting to the bowling alley, expecting Vilgax to show up since Ben knew.
The way I see the Cyborg Vilgax vs Normal Vilgax situation is that Cyborg Vilgax either knows he can take the hits dished out at him, or is cocky enough to not dodge, whereas Normal Vilgax knows that his body couldnt take the hits, and so he dodges
when we get to alien force, can we get a kevin “my car!” counter? edit: :0 they hearted the comment oh heck it might happen edit 2: HECK APPARENTLY EDITTING COMMENTS REMOVES HEARTS
I think it makes sense. the Omnitrix was originally intended to be for Grandpa Max. So it kind of makes sense that they'd make it so that the multiverse constant was that the Omnitrix ended up in the hands of someone who it wasn't originally intended for. It just came down to who that person was for each multiverse
As someone reaching the age where I can have kids soon, I can only imagine Grandpa Max's fear when he saw Ben trying to stand in front of the thugs with no Omnitrix or weapons. I don't know, that change of me watching this as a kid and as an adult was nice to see how the series grows with you.
20:32 This scene actually made sense to me later on. When it was revealed that Max was supposed to be the one who was originally supposed to received the Omnitrix. And that it latched on to Ben, because they were relatives and he was the closest one at the time with Max's DNA.
I'm totally okay with Gwen's aliens having hair, the only wrong thing is that it means that Ben probably wears a wig since his aliens are bald. Also kinda disappointed at Max's Upgrade, because it still has the black and white vibe of Ben's shirt, I would've loved to see a red-pink Upgrade to mimic Max's shirt
In OS all Galvanic Mechamorphs had white bellies or white parts mixed with other circuit patterns. There where even some that had Blue or White instead of Green. It was AF where they started showing them as just Black/Green with Green/Black bellies (Baz-l, Upgrade, Shipp, and the Guards in Galvan Prime had all the same color scheme) And then OV went full on and retconned them as all being exclusively Black/Green since their creation. So a Red/Pink Upgrade would've made sense at the time
I have no problem as long as it fits. Female galvans don’t have hair, so her version of one having it simply doesn’t fit, as opposed to tetramands, whose females actually do have hair.
That episode really confused me when I was 10 because back then I didn't have the concept of canon or not and I thought if it is a story driven cartoon (unlike some others like cow and chicken) then all episodes count for a continuous story.
@@kirbyfazendoummoonwalk9214 I totally didn't much theu explain in beginning of the episode as a what if, and further exolain smewhere granda max reverse it all because ben and gwen was knowing too much costng the whole thing to start all over.
I was an adult and still confused, since I watch it on streams mg on recommendation and the next episode drops it all together. When they did the comic book page "what if" again, I was like "oh, this is some weird one off thing."
I initially didn't like this episode because of how confusing it was, if it was a proper "what if" where Ben had no memories of the past season and see how Gwen would get the Omnitrix, it would've been a better episode.
5:10 I guess it’s just a response mechanism in our brains; I had a car swerving at me in the parking lot yesterday and I just stood there. I don’t know what sort of survival tactic that’s supposed to be, but humans have it, I guess it must’ve worked more than a few times for it to become instinct...
It's called the fight, flight or freeze response. Some people know about fight or flight but aren't aware that there is a third one in which you just freeze up. Different people have different reactions they are more likely to instinctively choose. It's supposed to be a predator response, like either out run it, fight it off, or stay still and hope it doesn't see you. Too bad it doesn't translate well in the modern day or in situations like yours. Interesting though at least.
My favorite subtle difference between the main timeline and Gwen 10 is that Vilgax gets down there as soon as he encounters resistance. It adds to Vilgax's character, since the implication here is that Vilgax would've done that too if he didn't almost die.
The episode's title is "Gewn10" but it really is more a character exploration of WHY Ben was the right person to get the watch. He might not be the most talented, smartest, or most experienced of the crew no matter the scenario, but he's just as adaptable as the watch itself. In a metatextual sense they were both quite literally made for each other and anything else isn't quite right.
Y'know, I've always wondered if Gwen being more skilled with the aliens straight off the bat was solely her wit, or maybe in this universe, the function of giving the user the alien's natural instincts was working in the prototype, which gave her the basic idea and it was mixed with her wit to greater effect unlike prime Ben who had to train his alien's abilities
I think that makes Ben a better user of the watch. 1st episode showed when he fought the vilgax robot as Diamonhead without knowledge of how to use his powers, he managed to still win.
this is how I see it, feel free to correct me, Cyborg Vilgax is superior is brute and raw strenght. but speed and in that sense agility goes to normal vilgax. Cyborg might be more durable but I am not certain of that
Cyborg just got out of a hospital bed keep alive by machines so id say weaker then normal. If Vilgax got the watch whent gray matter could he make a new one he seems to altrady know how it works so that would mean he knows more about it

I always felt so bad for this Ben. I wanted nothing more than for him to get the watch back and was so frustrated for him when he ended up losing it to Max. However, a cool continuation of this timeline if Gwen had kept the Omnitrix could see Ben seeking out the Charms of Bezel and then eventually unlocking his own Anodite abilities.
Since Max was the one the omnitrix was meant for and his DNA signature on its database being so close to Ben the one with the closer DNA to the one on the database was the one the omnitrix clung to and since it was meant for Max it automatically went to him. It only went to Ben in the original because Max wasn't close enough for it to detect.

Ben was supposed to get the Omnitrix so that he could mature and become the greatest hero in the Multiverse(Omniverse). Gwen getting the Omnitrix made her arrogant like pre-Omnitrix Ben.
I think some Tetramands have hair, and even facial hair, but it's always black, which I think would have looked better. As for Galvans, they're basically amphibians, and I don't think any of them have had hair... though Azmuth does have little grey spikes on his chin and brow I think?

16:30 Ngl, even today this line hits hard. Just imagining it! Being in Ben's Place and then you wake up next morning and no more Omnitrix and your cousin/sibling has it and is better with it 😢
Gwen being more carefree with the Omnitrix makes me wonder if she wanted to be more free spirited/have fun but she has these high expectations for herself. While Ben gets to be this cool hero and do adventurous thrilling stuff she was stuck being a sidekick/moral support. Now this timeline she has that freedom and the ability to have fun with that freedom. At least that’s how I see it.
Gwen knowing how to use the aliens better is probably because Ben’s Omnitrix was glitched and didn’t apply native knowledge of the aliens moves to him so he had to learn it, where as Gwen’s probably didn’t glitch out that way and helped her figure out the moves easier.

This was an extremely confusing episode to me as a child but now watching it back and this review with it, it only makes me miss the og magic of the series and wonder what this universe's timeline could have been.
I never liked the “Ben loses the only thing that makes him special,” episode, especially knowing now that Gwen’s the only one capable of magic presumably, so even in the future were Gwen to hold onto the omnitrix Ben would be fictionally useless, but hey. These reviews are good.
Max is special. No magic powers or magic watch. I more like to think the Omnitrix enhances what is special in Ben more then it's what makes him special. He would be more a Batman (self made hero) and less a Spiderman (gifted with powers) just like Max.
@@TheDawnofVanlife while there is the spark for greatness, we see in OV that Ben without the omnitrix is just a good person, and that’s it. That device is what takes a good person and turn them into a hero.

I like the hair on Gwen’s aliens. I remember thinking that was what the stripes on the heads of Ben’s Four Arms and Grey Matter were, they were hair that formed a stripe. I think it adds a little extra detail to their biology and/or culture
For the longest time I forgot that the episode was a “what if” scenario and I felt mad because I never remembered if it was real, spin off or alternate timeline. Just so much potential with Gwen 10 and I really wish we got see more of it.
Seeing this comparison and basically reliving my memories of the original series with a mind now knowledgeable of pop culture, I can really see how Vilgax is basically kinda like Darth Vader, especially when you compare his strong, durable, yet cumbersome cyborg form to his undamaged, slightly weaker, yet definitely faster form (Anakin). Not to mention the wheezy sound they both make.
I feel like Cyborg vilgax is more of a Tank, A giant Boulder kind of Threat, Being able to take the hit, and keep standing. While Normal Vilgax is more agile, at the expense of having less Durability.
Gwen's version of Four Arms having hair isn't a big deal, as Tetramands actually do have hair. Ben's grows a goatee and then there's Tini, a female Tetramand.
what's amusing to imagine from my perspective is how kevin's introduction would change in the gwen 10 timeline, especially given the alien force retcon that gwen and kevin had always had feelings for each other.

Conceivably this Ben could've just been taken back to the prime timeline as unexpectedly as he was taken out of it. Maybe Prime Ben just disregarded all of this as a weird dream he had.

I guess Paradox is responsible for this episode then
@@deadaccount8054 well, I wouldn't say responsible, seeing how Paradox doesn't really interfere DIRECTLY with the timelines.

So if this episode really does involve Eon somehow, it's possible it became undone later on
Wait what happened by who and what did who do?

@@danielsurvivor1372 It's about a certain omniverse episode and an ultimate alien episode. If you haven't watched them it's hard to understand
@@danielsurvivor1372 then go watch the show.
I love the idea of Kevin joining them earlier, maybe Max talks to kevin that he knows a way to revert kevin to his normal self,And then slowly have Kevin be like Majin vegeta,He is bad but he regrets it
What if Ben left the team after the events of the Alliance?
Edit: You know, what if he wanted his family safe by just leaving them?
Perhaps it's something like this: Dreams are windows into alternate lives in the Multiverse. This Ben never time traveled back like he said, instead, he dreamt and experienced the events of the prime timeline, making him think he's the prime variant, but it was actually another universe that he dreamt into
I think the time Traveling part is a reference towards a serie named Twilight Zone
With the Omnitrix:
Ben: Hero disposition - brave, confident and crafty.
Gwen: Well-honed powers, a natural.
Max: Less powerful since he’s older but makes up for it by pulling out tricks using crazy alien biology factoids.
Without the Omnitrix:
Max: Weirdly strong and competent, very experienced with alien weaponry.
Gwen: Magic. Enough said.
Ben: With no Omnitrix to take all his attention, hoards and tinkers with alien tech. Fond of hoverboards and laser-swords.
I believe that Ben would also be a natural, it's just that Gwen has a bit more wit.
19:46. I think the reason that regular Vilgax is quicker and more agile than his Cyborg counterpart is that all the cyborg and muscle manipulation additions he has in the Prime timeline added a lot of weight and bulk to his physique thus reducing his speed and reaction time
Its like ssj where trunks goes grade 3 make his speed weaker and only focus on streght and power
Beautiful speech

I'm totally okay with Gwen's aliens having hair, the only wrong thing is that it means that Ben probably wears a wig since his aliens are bald.
Also kinda disappointed at Max's Upgrade, because it still has the black and white vibe of Ben's shirt, I would've loved to see a red-pink Upgrade to mimic Max's shirt
In OS all Galvanic Mechamorphs had white bellies or white parts mixed with other circuit patterns.
There where even some that had Blue or White instead of Green.
It was AF where they started showing them as just Black/Green with Green/Black bellies (Baz-l, Upgrade, Shipp, and the Guards in Galvan Prime had all the same color scheme)
And then OV went full on and retconned them as all being exclusively Black/Green since their creation.
So a Red/Pink Upgrade would've made sense at the time

I initially didn't like this episode because of how confusing it was, if it was a proper "what if" where Ben had no memories of the past season and see how Gwen would get the Omnitrix, it would've been a better episode.
Yeah, this has always been my least favorite episode of the classic series.
Kuro’s cat be like:
*don’t mind me*
Y'know, I've always wondered if Gwen being more skilled with the aliens straight off the bat was solely her wit, or maybe in this universe, the function of giving the user the alien's natural instincts was working in the prototype, which gave her the basic idea and it was mixed with her wit to greater effect unlike prime Ben who had to train his alien's abilities
I think that makes Ben a better user of the watch. 1st episode showed when he fought the vilgax robot as Diamonhead without knowledge of how to use his powers, he managed to still win.
I don’t know how the omnitrix would just come off Gwen, by a small electric shock?

However, a cool continuation of this timeline if Gwen had kept the Omnitrix could see Ben seeking out the Charms of Bezel and then eventually unlocking his own Anodite abilities.
Since Max was the one the omnitrix was meant for and his DNA signature on its database being so close to Ben the one with the closer DNA to the one on the database was the one the omnitrix clung to and since it was meant for Max it automatically went to him. My guess for that is they didn't want her learning everything to eat up all the runtime.
Currently rewatching the whole franchise, nostalgia is kicking in
Maybe in this timeline Ben joins the plumbers, following in Max's shoes.
Imagine if they changed the opening for this episode where instead of Ben, it’s Gwen
It started when an alien device did what it did
It stuck itself upon her wrist with secrets that it hid
Now she’s got superpowers she’s no ordinary kid she’s Gwen 10
So if you see her you might be in for a big surprise

She's every shape and size

@@AaronDJ26 Cuz, she’s the baddest kid to ever save the day! Gwen 10!
Speaking of which, how would the show have played out if Gwen had the Omnitrix all the way throughout the original series, up to Omniverse?
@@thesapphireone the biggest diference is that Gwen and Ben would have never Met Kevin, Since Ben Dont have the Omnitrix he would never transform into Ghostfreak and be Expulsed from the Hotel, and since he wouldnt be Expulsed from the Hotel Ben wound never Run Away and Therefore he wouldnt Meet Kevin, Kevin wouldnt become a Mutant and wouldnt get into the Null Void (Wich also means that the Rooters Arc wouldnt Happen)
@@kirbyfazendoummoonwalk9214 so I guess it’s a good thing for her that she doesn’t canonically have the omnitrix
I'm more ok with Female Galvans having hair so Gwen's Grey Matter form makes sense
I wish when they did the Gwen with omnitrix episode it was just a parallel universe where that happened, instead of our ben ending up there. We wouldn’t have to deal with ben’s jealousy and feeling like he lost something that was his and making different decisions because of his prior knowledge
I wish they made full transformation sequences for Gwen's Aliens like they did with Ben's
At least they did in omniverse (even though it was only diamondhead)
I love how serious kuro is trying to be with the cat by him
I honestly loved the idea of Gwen getting the watch and would've loved to see more episodes of that reality. Like I don't see Ben trying to learn magic like she would've cause I don't see him having the patience to want to learn it, but I do see him becoming a full on plumber like his grandpa and seeing as his parents we're never to keen on the idea of him doing dangerous stuff like that in general would've made for some nice moments in the Gwen timeline/reality. Plus we would get to see her misuse the omnitrix in her own way and see if she maybe would've kept notes down on how to unlock new aliens and other codes on the watch.
Just so much potential with Gwen 10 and I really wish we got see more of it.
Agreed
Seeing this comparison and basically reliving my memories of the original series with a mind now knowledgeable of pop culture, I can really see how Vilgax is basically kinda like Darth Vader, especially when you compare his strong, durable, yet cumbersome cyborg form to his undamaged, slightly weaker, yet definitely faster form (Anakin). Not to mention the wheezy sound they both make.
Plus Max with the Omnitrix that's basically Cannon isn't it
Yes he was meant to have it anyway.
Max 10
Yes its cannon
Yeah it's cannon alright
Cannonbolt
@@andrewcabral963 not really.. If it was actually canon, then Paradox would have mentioned it in the main timeline.
Could they have had a friendlier relationship? Could future!Ben have warned kevin about the consequences of messing with the omnitrix? I almost want to write this fanfic myself
Go for it.
Gwen is smarter then ben but I would say ben has more street smarts
Agreed
Ben also can be very smart when it comes to using his aliens
He comes up with creative ways to get out of situations
He even taught Kevin how to use his powers better
Rigby: "Street rules, man!"

I love Rigby
It was fun seeing this episode when it first aired on TV. I remember as a small child being really confused about it. All these years later coming back it makes a lot more sense. I am surprised that they didn't reuse more animations, though it makes sense when the scenes are not really same. I'm looking forward to your reaction to the "Ultimate Weapon" episode, that was one of my favourite episodes as a kid. All said, great breakdown as always, have a nice day.
I'll never get tired of the new intro.
At least we got to see more Gwen 10 alien Transformations in the Omniverse episode.
But yeah I do wish we could’ve gotten to see more Gwen 10 aliens in the Original series.
You can watch version of ben 10 and gwen 10 side by side comparison which is shorter and without much talking here - ua-cam.com/video/kAT22vaEeSU/v-deo.html and by the way on my channel there are bunch of side by side comparisons of ben 10 and gwen 10 aliens!
@@showtimewithMZ1 I didn’t really ask for that but thanks anyway 😅
I’m fine with the hair it’s more the color I don’t like. It just doesn’t mesh with well in my opinion. As for fourarms I’m cool with it.
I would like to point out how Max getting the omnitrix makes, as it was set to attach to Max according to the upchuck debut, with it going to Ben before because he had enough of Max’s dna if I remember correctly.

Doesn’t really matter after all this time
Paradox did it for fun
@@deadaccount8054 yeah paradox maybe did it for an experiment

It started when
An alien device did what it did
It stuck itself upon her wrist
What secrets that it hid
Now she’s got super powers
She’s no ordinary kid
She’s Gwen 10
That should have been the intro to this episode
Is it just me or we all got childhood crushes on gwen version aliens
