      I second that opinion. The idea that orcs were specifically designed by their chief deity to have bloodlust hard-wired into their DNA is just such a fascinating one. It really bothers me whenever people try to treat different D&D races as reskinned humans by applying human concepts that their lore clearly indicates shouldn't apply to them.

    For the orc discourse, my main issue is when people play the "Always Chaotic Evil" trope completely straight. It's okay to have evil cultures and/or societies, but there will always be outliers in said society.
    There need to be a solid in-universe explanation as for why a race is inherentlying evil (race was artificially created, was corrupted, is a hive-mind, etc.) at least for me. Otherwise the story can slip into some really gross and uncomfortable territory, like "Certain races are inherently pure or evil, so it's okay for our heroes to mass exterminate them, even actual pregnant women and children."
    You think that last part is an exaggeration, but that was a classic DnD moral dilemma back in the day. Yes really, look it up.

    • @bibbobella
      @bibbobella 2 роки тому

      Agreed.
      I have no issue with some gods being evil and their influence into a race changing the race itself making them evil (The Drow is a pretty good example of this) but even in those cases there are outliers. There are a good god attempting to help the few "weirdoes" that stray from that path.
      I don't mind drows to be seen as inheriantly evil in the world...because that is what everyone would believe. They have probably never met one of these few outliers and the few outliers that are around are either in hiding or simply killed by their own race because...well...they are outliers.
      Evil societies and corruptions are great but don't just make them "always evil" punching bags...that is lazy and even more important..really boring...

    • @323starlight
      @323starlight 2 роки тому

      The route I went in a world I'm working on is they're evil primarily due to the fact their creator god is a visious warmonger who represents the brutality of war. Not to mention the culture that god taught them created a tribal society that respects only strength and power and hates any sort of weakness. Think Spartans but more extreme.

      In the current edition of D&D, Orcs, Goblins, Kobolds, Gnolls, and many other inherently evil races are 'artificially created' since they are legitimately made by their respective god.

    • @boneman9751
      @boneman9751 2 роки тому

      Another good reason to have “evil races” is inherit culture. Just like the nazi, they believed that genocide and extermination was a good and necessary thing. Of course we know it’s wrong, no questioning that, but young children who was indoctrinated into that belief had no idea that it was wrong and grew up believing they were in the right. Culture is a massive part of society so having fictional society’s have their own respective culture is almost a necessity for world building. Taking that and making it “their culture is founded on violence and stealing” gives a reason as to A. Why their doing it B. Justification to fight against them

      @@boneman9751 That...is not at all how the nazies worked my man...The new nazies do but old nazy germany didn't.

I would prefer you kind of delve into the alignments and questions behind the ORKs of shadow of Mordor, where they can be on both sides but a matter of who is controlling them. honestly, in regards to the orc video - go for it! While I think modern orcs aren't evil anymore, I think the idea of having a pure evil race/species is perfectly fine in fiction - they don't need to have some deep thought provoking reason for why they are evil, sure there may be a couple good eggs, or maybe there are none. - and I am also someone who is perfectly fine with taking inspiration from real world groups through history, like the Mongols, various empires, cultures, radical groups, etc... I don't think it's inherently racist (it CAN be, but that doesn't mean it's always racist), I think you can create tons of new and interesting races and cultures we still haven't seen by further mixing and mashing real world and fictional ideas

    Personally as far as the "Orcs are evil" thing goes. I don't think they're innately evil so much as there are a whole bunch of factors that predispose them to being evil. The lifestyle they live is demanded by their creators, be that a Dark Lord or an actual God. That lifestyle breeds a culture that views other races as animals, to be hunted and to take their things. Their creators also make them susceptible to anger, jealousy, or any other negative emotion that might push them to maintain the status quo. Any Orc born in that environment would struggle to break out, making any that do exceptional. Then you get outside forces that react to Orcs and treating them like monsters for doing the things they do, making it even harder to break out of the typical Orc lifestyle. It's a vicious cycle that is incredibly difficult to break.

    I kinda wish Goku Black was actually an evil alternative version of Goku. The concept is genuinely interesting especially when you consider Goku's defining character trait is his genuine love of Martial Arts and becoming stronger and how you can twist that. Like imagine a Goku that was found by some crime lord or even someone like Master Crane instead of Grandpa Gohan or even simply stayed on Vegeta and joined up with Nappa, Vegeta, Raditz etc and served and eventually overthrew Freeza. He keeps his love of martial arts and want to get stronger solely to improve himself but he has none of Goku's restrictions or his discipline so he will win and get stronger by any means necessary. I think it would be a very interesting character and fits nicely into Dragon Ball's philosophy and themes of martial arts. It could be a pretty literal way of fighting ones inner demons.

    The Immortality vs. Mortality thing with Zamasu should've worked itself out using Saiyan DNA as the reason, since Saiyans get stronger when they're near death and heal, Fused Zamasu should've kept healing over and over until he got both another power up and regained his full Immortality. At least that's how I would've written it. It's better than the anime ending of the arc we got and also better than the stupid ending Toyotaro spat out in his fanfiction manga.

  • @jondw

    my biggest issue with the orc curse of Grumsh thing is that it is so under-explored.
    you have this race that are magically cursed that all of them and all of their descendants crave violence, yet the only way they are ever shown expressing this is raiding. like you live in a world where so many problems are solved by violence and you decide to just be another one of them, a waste.
    an example of more that could be done is I have a character idea who is basically a gladiator who lets out all that instinctive bloodlust in the ring, as a performer(his fighting group is more modern wrestling than pure blood sport, though they still do use real weapons accidents do sometimes happen[his backstory debut into the fighting group is a match against the fighter who killed his mom in the ring{he knows it was an accident but the savage beast come to fight the hero in a bout of vengeance sells more tickets. until the ringmaster realizes who people are more cheering for and the roles of hero and heal in the fight are swapped}]). so like the removal of the curse is kinda dumb, especially when they could have just tried to do more with it.
    heck, make them a dark reflection of murder hobos. the horde comes into a town and the local village tries to get them a job far enough away from the town before they give themselves a "job" or get upset about not getting paid. if you have a murder hobo party having a rival party be filled with orcs could be an interesting dynamic and if the rival orc party is more liked than the party because they are less murder hoboy that could be a good wake up call for the party to maybe dial it back(of course generally you should talk to the players before resorting to passive aggressive "even the orcs are better people"ing, but that is a completely separate thing).
    I'm not even saying most orcs should be good but it's just so much potential that is just ignored.

    Honestly, was not expecting you to side with the Orcs are Evil argument. o3o Pleasantly surprised. That being said, I 100% want to hear your reasoning behind it.
    By the way; here are some fun facts that are interesting about Orcs in DnD which people don't realize. An Orc reaches adult maturity at Age 12 (Reaching the same physical characteristics as a 21 yo human or an 100 yo Elf). They reach middle-aged at 20 Years, and rarely live past 40 Years outside of magical intervention. Btw: 40 Years is the natural life limit of an Orc, NOT the average age from war and disease and stuff like that. Additionally, while not stated in any outright biology of their species, I like to believe that Orcs have a much higher Testosterone chemical balance in their system. This would explain their Orc Ferocity species skill which prevents them from falling unconscious after taking enough damage. Even the Females of the Orc species have higher testosterone levels than a Male of the Human species with their innate ability to suppress falling unconscious when sustaining critical damage.
    Sorry for going on a tangent about something so trivial on a DBZ Alignment Video of all things, but I hate this whole "Orcs are Racist!" idea when they aren't even the same species.

    I'd honestly like to see you do a video on Orcs, if only to see your opinion. To me, I feel the orcs are less inherently evil as they are inherently challenge hungry - they love a good challenge, be it fighting, invading, concocting new illnesses, you even see it with Warcraft orcs - Gul'dan might not desire challenge as much, but he desires the power to overcome challenges, and between Garrosh, Grommash and even the orcs of the Warcraft Movie you can really see this sort of drive for greater strength and challenge.
    Incidentally, that challenge does not need to be in battle. Imagine an immensely strong, intimidating orc with a cleaver, skinning and butchering meet in the marketplace before either selling it with big, bombastic declerations or cooking it up such that the smell wafts up and down. That's an orc butcher or chef but it still FEELS like an Orc.

      Pretty much this... doesn't help that Orcs in the DnD setting age a little faster than twice the speed of a normal Human so their mental age is about the same as a human child when they're physically an adult. Same reasons why adopted Humans in Elf society have trouble "fitting in" and "misbehaving". I don't believe 'inherently evil' is a good way to describe them, more.... 'naturally inclined to tilt towards evil based on the black-and-white spectrum presented within DnD's setting without outside stimuli to stop them'.
      (Edit) Kind of like how certain alien species are more predisposed towards the Dark Side of the force rather than the Light Side. It doesn't prevent them from becoming Light Side Jedi, but they will be struggling with their internal nature for the rest of their lives to go against what they feel is 'natural' to do based on biological and sociological traits.

    Might be late to the convo, but I'd be down for a "racial alignments aren't bad" type video. I hated that controversy had an effect on WotC to the point they snubbed pretty much all racial traits except special abilities. They don't even give heights or ages anymore.

    I think dnd biology videos sounds great although i will say that since goku black and zamasu share a soul and have for the most part same personality i dont think there would really be a dominant personality in his case plus i like the mangas goku black arc better in that the fusion was immortal but didnt become unstable till the time ran out.

    To me they honestly seem like chaotic evil. They have a vague idea about what they're doing, thinking they're doing it all for an eventually constructive reason, but none of their actions display for this to be the case. They act very chaotically, embracing odd changes in themselves that mutate and break fabric of reality in weird ways, leading to Zamasu becoming a universal force that threatens the entire multiverse. He just embraces that too without any thought given to how that is supposed to lead to rebuilding and formation of a new world. He thinks he is acting in the name of some order, but he is clearly not. He is chaotic evil that believes he is lawful.

    Eh, even in DnD, it was shown orcs aren't inherently/biologically evil. In Forgotten Realms/Toril alone were have the Ondonti and Zakharan orcs. The difference being they were separated from standard orc culture. If they were *inherently or *biologically* evil, that would made little to no difference. While Zakharan orcs were averaging about the same as humanity in alignmenent, while Ondonti were mostly, even near universally Lawful Good (sans kids capured by Zhentarim, who grew up to be of evil and neutral alignements).

    I have to say that Zamasu or rather Black Goku started really strong but the many, many, many issues with the arc kinds of drag him down.
    I mean, I love Frieza but Resurrection F was bad for him. He did have some of the best parts of the Tournament of Power.
    To add some words, complains about the Goku Black's arc.
    Why does Goky Black has any time he is not fighting our heroes? They have a time machine, why spending a day in the past/present means Goku Black has to wait a day until they return? They could travel the second they retreated to keep fighting without letting him rest. Heck! They could fight him with many versions of Goku and Vegeta!
    I have others but I will only mention one that has been brought up a lot but it must not be forgotten.
    Remember the cute little kids? The ones Vegeta gave food? Dead.
    The entire world Trunks fought so hard to protect? Dead.
    But hey! Ge got to move to a world where doppelgangers of all those people he failed live.

  • @thaeros

    for most universes i would not said that orcs are evil but mostry chaotic neutral they have a clanic drive for " the strongest is the boss" ( until the next strongest) are pretty violent and impulsive but for me they don't "think" enought to be "evil" they are controled by feelings they want to eat, they eat, tehy want to drink idem and i would not said if they want to F ... they personality is more "i feel like doing that so i try to do it but if the oponent was stronger and even if he kill me that's not important i had done what i wanted! So i would put them a chaotic ( no rules) neutral ( no desire to do good or bad just desire to do whatever they ar feeling to do at present time)!

      in dragon ball the gods of destruction have a huge weakness their life force is connected to their supreme kai. you kill them they will die as well. this is how they got rid of them without fighting them, and If a god of destruction dies, the angel immeditly leaves till a new god of destctuition is assign. this is how zamasu got rid of stronger characters and stopping them from interving with his plan.
      now with trunk, it noted he has the more advanced form of Sjj2 but the other, thing is that Black is holding back and letting him live on purose as a means to practice with his body. the. the anime also hints that Goku as sjj2 and base black are holding back and could have easily one-shot Trunk if they wanted to at the beginning of the arc. and sayian when facing or fighting along stronger opponents

    i don’t like the biological alignment rules because of two things
    1. it makes dnd less fun for players, having someone say they want to play a lawful good goblin and then saying “um actually no goblins are inherently chaotic 🤓” is a dick move and sucks the fun out of making characters
    2. the idea in itself means that there can be a lot of moral detachment when playing, if orcs, goblins and gnolls are inherently evil and you tell people that then what’s to stop your players from doing unspeakably horrible things to these races cause “they’re bad”
    even if you don’t think the concept of orcs being evil is racist (which i personally do) you have to at least know that in a GAME sense the concept is bad

    Zamasu isn’t and never is Evil, he is Lawful to Chaotic Good. the whole thing is that he is heavily misguided in his beliefs what he is doing is for the greater good as he loves and cares for the universe and deems Mortals as evil, unfit to live as they waste their gift of life and destroy the world and eachothers. another thing in the spin-off games and manga has a character known as devil man who has a pretty strong hax the Devil beam that will destroy person depending how Evil the person, this dose crazy damage to people like Freiza and insane damage to people like Buu and Janemba who are people made of evil. If done to Zamasu it will do nothing as he has is pure heart of good.
