Your reaction is very much appreciated by this 71 year old rocker that had the good fortune to be able to enjoy this groups music during their heyday. Watching this performance now I have become aware of how spoiled we were in the 60's & 70's as there were dozens of groups pumping out a plethora of wonderful soulful music. Thanks for your reaction.

This masterpiece was good in 1967, as was Gary's voice. But this completed the masterpiece with this performance, and Gary's voice at 61 in this show, was better than at 22. Yes he is gone, but he will never be forgotten as long as this anthem is played.

I saw Procol Harum perform this in 1967 at Fillmore West in San Francisco.. There was a band, no orchestra, and he played the organ. The mood was psychedelic with a light show by Bill Graham. A vivid and amazing memory.

And Robin Trower was still with the band for another four or five years. They were a great band but Gary here at 60 years still had great pipes (unlike most of his peers who shredded their vocal chords decades earlier). Do you remember who else was on the bill? There were usually 3 serious headliners at the Fillmore.

@@djcookiemaster So long ago, but it was my birthday so I still remember. Besides PH there was Pink Floyd and P J Hooker. There were so many great concerts in those days. Before Fillmore West it was the Fillmore Auditorium (Fillmore & Geary an abandoned YMCA gym), Avalon Ballroom, Winterland, Marina Green with free Sunday concerts and the Golden Gate Park Polo Grounds free concerts. Every sunny weekday lunch I would walk up to Union Square and watch buskers play and sing. Within weeks they would often be playing at the Fillmore. Thanks for helping me remember.

Well, now he is no longer with us. One of the greatest singers in the world, a songwriter of the old school. has now died - RIP.
Since 1967 he enchanted his fans with few but impressive titles; my favorites are "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" and "Homburg", whereby the former song became something like a hippie song. In 1977, after the breakup of the group, Gary Brooker began an unprecedented solo career, collaborating with almost all the world stars of the music world...
A great man I will remember for a long time, because my teenage years were closely connected with this song.

Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale together with the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band established the Hippie love or Flower Power. According to the singer, there are chords and a bar from Sebastian Bach's AIR (on G string from orchestral suite #3 in D major).
His original video has something of pacifism, of no to war because of the images and the moment, given that the hippies wanted to end the Vietnam War, something that the Americans should demand with the same intensity with the current wars that their governments are getting used to. Greetings from Peru.

These words are straight from the Bible it’s an allegory. The waiter is, Jesus turned water into wine, and brought them more than they had asked for. There’s no reason to doubt because the truth is right in front of you. Feeling kind of seasick is referring to Jesus walking on water And we have eyes, but we do not see, plus a couple more that I may have missed. I think this is why the song in the words resound with so many people because deep inside us we really know what they are singing about, and it’s not about drugs. The ceiling find away is breaking through the firmament, and becoming closer to God and keeping your lamps filled with oil as a bride of Christ. That’s my take on it but I’m just an old hippie.

This version of this song is my favorite song of all time. I have lost so many close people this last year but Gary Booker was the legend I admired most. It just adds to a profound sadness I can't seem to shake. Like a guy said in a previous post. Hopefully you are singing in heaven. My wife just got there a few days before you Gary. Sing to my wife and make her happy because I'm pretty sure she will be able to find it there unlike here.

His voice will live on in this song....and quite possibly this performance, through people of the younger generation remembering the greatest musical generation of our era....and WE (I'm 68) didn't even realize it until now.....and now, you recognize the era too! Thank you

This Song defined what the 1960's was all about. It came out a couple of years before my birth but my uncle was a massive music fan and he loved this song and always talked about what this song meant to him, it was the song played at both his wedding in 1982 and at his funeral in 2006.The 1960s was a wonderful decade of music from the Beatles, the Stones, Motown, the Doors, etc etc etc but this song is the defining song of the decade in my opinion and sung so beautifully by Gary Brooker RIP

It’s a masterly composed song but Gary’s voice is sublime, unmatched

Gary Brooker M.B.E - Sold over 10,000,000 singles globally, one of only around 35 songs to have ever achieved this.
This particular performance is Perfection...it cannot be topped, his voice which is called a Whisky tenor is amazingly powerful and this as you can see from the set list was near the end of the concert , so a good hour of singing already...

If you like orchestras you'll love Tommy Shaw's "Sing For the Day" concert where he joins with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra.
Amazing things those kids can do.......songs like You're Fooling Yourself and Blue collar Man as well as Girls with Guns....yes it's kids but you will be amazed at their talent.

Really an epic concert. Lovely venue with a relatively small audience. Supremely professional and talented orchestra. Gary playing flawlessly and singing with passion. I can tell this vid was put together by skilled pros because I now feel a glimmer of a feeling that I actually attended the concert. 🙏🏻 to you Ms. Bisscute.

I wasn't aware that he had passed away. How sad. I've always liked this song and Procol Harum. I've seen this video so many times, and it's difficult to wrap around the fact that he's gone. RIP brother.
