Gary Brooker (Singer)/piano player died last week from cancer. A true magnificent talent who got better with age. Natural talent, and natural music you don't hear much any more. Sadly RIP Gary you won't be forgotten
It's fun to think that my girlfriend and I danced and kissed to this song in 1968 and here today guys your age are loving it. Thank-You both so very much. God's Peace to you.
Procol Harum was the name of their manager's Burmese cat. Always thought that was cool. Gary Brooker is the vocalist and he actually sounded better 40 years later. Gorgeous arrangement with the Danish national orchestra and choir. Totally epic. Thanks for doing this Recklezz crew.
The story I heard was that their manager at the time, Guy Stevens, had a girl friend whose blue Burmese cat was named Procul Harun. Because he mentioned the name during a phone call, it was misheard and also misspelled to become Procol Harum.
One of my all time favorite songs. Great in 1967.....MASTERPIECE 40 years later!!!!! The arranger of this deserves massive KUDOS. There is nothing better than a full orchestra and a chorus to bring out emotions!! I get chills every time I see this. Wish I could have been there. I'm sure those in attendance are still talking about it. Music is so much better when performed with real instruments played by real people. Not the computerized generic sounds we hear all to often anymore. I could easily tell how much you both enjoyed this esp. near the end with the great crescendo of the orchestra and chorus. Gary Brooker did sound even better and he sounded just as good even 10 years after this.
@@robsambosky6444 I got to see him with Ringo Starr and His All Star Band in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. around 20 years ago and of course he played the organ and it was the highlight of the show!
This was my fathers favorite song. I remember him playing the keyboards along to it was I was a young kid. Haven't heard this song in years. Gary Brooker voice is amazing. I think he's in his mid 70s and still sounds great. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
i love the little smiles when he hits those notes. its like an acknowledgement of his talent. so good, so so many songs, artists you have yet to hear, gonna be a fun journey. i wonder what your both top songs are you have heard now, ones that have shocked you, or made you feel a certain way. would be fun to know.
...and the big smile at 8:40...fills this 60+year old guy's heart with joy watching the younger folks enjoy what we were so lucky to see as it happened way back in the day.
This performance, this one performance, has also heightened my appreciation for orchestral music that I rarely have listened to. Amazing how great it sounds, as well as the vocals
It really is amazing what instruments can do. It's because parents everywhere have endured a few years of squeaking and squawking as their children practiced string and wind instruments. But when it finally is right there is amazing music.
This was my mother and father's personal 'song'. They were born in the mid-forties, saw these guys live, and it became their wedding song. To see him up there now with that impeccable voice and seeing him live with the thrill of that wonderful orchestra behind him is just soul-lifting. Bless the both of you for your appreciation of one of the classics.
The song is from The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. It is based on a story telling contest with the prize being a free meal for the best story. Of course they were spinning tales and each one tried to best the previous story and the embellishments were hilarious...! RIP Gary Brooker who passed away a month ago
I saw Gary Brooker and Procol Harum at Eastern Illinois University in April 1973. It was a great concert and I do believe Gary's voice improved with age. What a pleasure to see your unbridled enthusiastic reactions to the music I grew up with. You guys have also introduced me to more current music that I had never listened to. Peace. ✌
55 years ago! You are learning that limiting yourself to one genre of music will rob you of some amazing surprises and experiences. Good music is good music whatever the genre.
I have the original album I bought back in college. I bought this album, too. Gary Brooker, you were amazing! If there’s a heaven, I hope to hear you there!
Thanks for discovering this classic pop anthem. I was in the military when it received air play in 1967. What an emotional piece, even after all these years!
Gary said in an interview that he thought this hit would last maybe 10 years, and disappear. But he kept having young kids asking for this song. A true testament to his ability. Gary's voice was good in 1968, but like fine wine, it got better with age. I have heard many performances of this masterpiece, and this is by far the best.
A Whiter Shade of Pale touched my heart back in the late 1960s but this is outstanding. So Beautiful. I the start when the oboe breaks in during the strings intro.
I watch quite a few of these " first time " vids and I am a little surprised how the youth today are surprised by how good " older " music from my youth is,.... The mid 60s to the mid 70ss was a very special time for music,
I love both of you young people for reaching out to the past to lead you into better places. I'm 62 years old, remember this song very fondly, and am very glad it's now one of the things that are in your caring hands.
What's wonderful about music is it DOES NOT AGE...we can listen to everything from Beethoven to the Beatles to Eminem and love it all no matter how old WE are...you two and an old lady like me just prove that.🥰🥰
You guys are becoming two of my favorite reactors. Such a young, refreshing perspective on this music that we have all loved for decades. I love hearing your take on all of it. I'd really like to share some Canadian music. Lay it on The Line by Triumph - is a fantastic hard rocking song. Rik Emmett has an epic voice. I think you'd both love it. Hugs from Canada :)
Love me some Triumph. Saw them in concert, and as good as Rik Emmett can sing, it's his guitar work that gets me. My favorite by them is Hold On from that same album, Just a Game.
My favorite part of watching reaction videos is seeing young persons such as yourselves discovering so much amazing music that I grew up with. I have no idea what your musical exposure was prior to starting your channel but I know that a lot of the young reactors were mostly brought up on rap and hip-hop. No disrespect to those genres; it's just that there are so many other amazing styles of music over the years and it's fun to watch you guys really enjoy things you might never have known existed if not for your channel. Kudos to you both for having an open mind musically!
Procol Harum was formed in 1967 with Gary Brooker, becoming an official member even though he didn't sing or play any instruments. "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" was one of about 15 songs that he wrote for their first album.
The music of my youth, it's possible that my generation are the first to not be bothered about getting old, we've seen it, heard it, done it, born in the 50s, we are the chosen ones.
I love this song!! It has sooo many "layers". They start out with the symphony then add him on piano & vocals (which knocked it outta the park) then the organ, the drums & finally the choir. 🤣
I am a seventy two year old Welshman and have discovered your channel, and I really admire your for exploring and experiencing music outside your comfort zone. This version of Whiter Shade of Pale is in my opinion far more sophisticated than the original which was a huge hit when I was a teenager, and you picked up on that. Keep listening and broaden your horizons, not just through music, but also through literature art and travel and this will ensure that you will have a fulfilled life.
You are on the right track young man. Listening to all these different genre from so many different countries can open your eyes to see the similar threads running through. Our eyes are open to see that we are not so different and that our basic goals are really the same and that their really should be no competition to reach our goals but compassion to make sure that everyone finishes the race. If you think that I speak out of line forgive an old man. I'm a 73 year old Navy veteran , father for 48 years, grandfather for 27 years and great grandfather for 6 years. Its my nature to attempt to teach and encourage.
It's really cool to see your reaction to this. A rock song from the 60's with an orchestra and a choir 40 years later created something that transcends color, age, religion, politics, you name. None of that matters. Music is the universal language that brings us together! If it sound good, it is good! Enjoy the ride
I remember driving down the highways listening to the radio when this first came out. He was and the band members you saw come in later, were all young men. We all were. And I've followed them since I was very little!!! Like a fine wine that just keeps improving!
Thank you so much for doing this song. From the very first time I heard it, back in the early 70s, it has long been one of my very favorite pieces of music. The vocals, too, are exceptional. I still get chills.
Procol Harum is a British rock band formed in 1967. In the same year they had the world hit A Whiter Shade of Pale. Singer Gary Brooker died of cancer on February19,2022 at the age of 76.
I enjoyed seeing the both of you enjoying this classic song. Even more than that I loved the observation near the beginning of how amazing it is that we humans figured out how to design and play instruments and use our voices to create such beautiful sounds. I really appreciated that being said, especially by someone so young. That's how creation and appreciation keeps going.
The musician plays the "legendary Hammond Organ", which was and is very popular (although nowadays it is mostly played with the keyboard and sampled pieces). It is characterized by an outstanding sound and richness, and the "special" were speakers in the cabinet, which rotated in a controlled manner, creating this particular tremolo effect.
I'm 72 and I remember dancing with Heather Hall in Gary's basement party to this song. As a musician, I love the orchestra arranger's idea to start the melody in the minor key. It creates a bittersweet feeling right away. Then, right before Brooker enters with the vocal, they shift to the major. A beautiful Tierce de Picardie! Brooker's voice is full and more mature here. Of course, for the purist, when the B3 organ enters after the first verse, it is HALLELUJAH time!

One of the rare times a live performance rivals the classic studio release. Alot of layers of emotion in this performance of a unique song that shouldnt have been a hit back then but was so so good that it was. It is cool when a singer still has it and in some ways is even better of a singer at such an advanced age. Its rarer than we think. More so happens with male voices as our voices mature later than women. So they stay a bit longer if taken care of. I tell you who would freak yall out whose voice has simply not aged and thats Paul Rodgers of Bad Company. Look up some of his later live performances with Bad Company. Bad Company would be a great group to react to.
