    The pedal partners room reminds me so much of the back cover of lonerism!!
    Great tips, really liked the comparison of di guitar to a miced amp, di (especially fuzz) sounds really good for the lofi duster-esque aesthetic, I see di guitar as an effect of its own!

    Pretty useful video! Living in Hungary, salaries are low here and gear is expensive, so I try and save where I can (in fact I bought at least half my guitars and pedals on the local used market).
    My current home studio setup: a Focusrite Scarlett interface, Ableton Live on my laptop, some Behringer dj headphones, and a cheap condenser mic (the brand is Yenkee, some local brand I guess), a cheap Millenium DI box, as well as all my various instruments and pedals of course.
    I'm also saving up to some cheap studio monitors at the moment. The Kali you suggested is out of my price range for now, but I may just get some cheap no-name one for now, as a temporary solution. Up till now, I've been using my car speakers to check the mix, but of course having something readily available in my room makes a lot more sense, might get myself a pair for Christmas!

      nice setup. it's a about using what you have, a lot of my favourite music was made using cheap DIY setups rather than million dollar studios. it's great we're in a time where good quality audio can be recorded by anyone, opens the doors to creativity to everyone!

      @@pedalpartners Thanks so much :D yeah it is great that all this stuff is readily available for us to record at home, I wouldn't have the cash to go to a professional recording studio all the time (especially with the amount of songs I write, am a solo artist currently working on my 7th full length studio album). It's great we can pick up these tips and tricks along the way, thanks for uploading this video!

    Most of my plug-ins are Waves. They have some very good ones that I've come to rely on. My solution to the pay for updates is I never update them! If they sound good when I bought them, they'll continue to sound good. I don't have any proof that version 14 sounds any better than version 11 so I just go with whatever version it was when I bought it unless of course there's an update within the one year window they have for free updates!

    • @pedalpartners
      @pedalpartners  Рік тому

      fair enough! i updated to m1 mac with a new os last year (that 2014 macbook in the video has been on its last legs for a couple of years!), needed to update the plug ins for my new os & i know regular updates is something i need to be future proof in my music & video-making so a subscription is an unneeded pain!

    Mic vs DI? There is no either/or, do both! If you've got another mic spare, record the room sound too. It's a whole rabbit hole to disappear into, but mixing the three can make magic. It can also make inaudible, unlistenable mush, but that's for finding out.
    Also, my software is XP based, and I'll keep it alive as long as I can, cos having to rebuild it in another OS just seems like too much hassle. It's worked fine for well over a decade, why change?

    • @pedalpartners
      @pedalpartners  Рік тому +1

      exactly! just thought i'd compare for those in apartments etc. who don't always have the luxury of recording out loud. we definitely like to combine elements in our music :)

    • @thomascraymer8712

      I much preferred the DI take from this comparison, it sounds more "full". Though I use mic for recording acoustic instruments of course. There's definitely a time and place for both!

    So much fun I love it.
    Proper Heavy Grungy Fuzz too.
    It reminds .e of the gate on my EHX SOVTEK BIGMUFF.

      Maybe my Slő 1st in chain.
      Not sure yet? I'm gonna try different combos.

    Love the video. Appreciate the gear tips. I bought an iRig for my guitar over a year ago and I was going to use that w/ just garageband on the iphone just to start recording something. Due to a variety of factors, mostly procrastination, I find it hard to learn the interface to record/mix.

    • @pedalpartners
      @pedalpartners  8 місяців тому +1

      i started with just a usb mic & paige+becca started recording on garageband on an ipad & from that we are where we are today! i would recommend picking up an interface, they're pretty straightforward to use & you'll definitely get the hang of it after a few tries. i currently use an arturia minifuse, that's what i'd currently recommend. check out more of my channel for more advice! :)

      @@pedalpartners As far as DAWs go, do you prefer Logic or Ableton, or something else?

    • @pedalpartners
      @pedalpartners  8 місяців тому +1

      @@solidus32 i started on garageband & now use logic. i have also used ableton & pro tools. ableton is good for live use & synth based music, the stock plug-ins are more creative than logic. if you are used to garageband, logic is a nice progression.

    Love the video. I work in sound design and even though I know a LOT about recording, design and mixing, it's still really intimidating recording guitar. I don't know why I hadn't thought of DI'ing a guitar before, but what a great idea. Thank you for this. Really great video.
    In terms of headphones, I use the Beyerdynamic DT770. They work comfort-wise for me as I wear them all day, though I do agree they can get uncomfortable at some point. I have heard that the 990's are apparently even more comfortable. I'm probably gonna get those at some point in the future. Might be worth a try.
    Not sure what DAW you were working on with your Waves plugins, but I use Reaper and I am still using v9 plugins and have no problem with them at all. I do know they are a bit more annoying on Macs than they are on PCs, but with Reaper on a PC (or even in Ableton) I have yet to have any issue with older Waves plugins. Not trying to diminish your woes and I know they do that thing (like Avid with Protools and their software in general) where they try to get you to continue to pay for them, which is total garbage. Just wasn't sure if it was worth giving another DAW a try (though I'm sure at this point it's probably too late).

    • @pedalpartners
      @pedalpartners  Рік тому +1

      hmmm interesting thanks for the recommendation, will have to try out those 990s.
      it wasn't necessarily the functionality of waves plug ins. i just couldn't use them because i had to pay for ongoing updates. i wouldn't even mind that much if they would let you know it's not a one time fee! i know stuff like plug in alliance offer subscription plug ins, which is fine, but not my thing.

    • @soul-bot
      @soul-bot Рік тому

      @@pedalpartners Ugh. I'll have to see if the few plugins I just bought recently give me that trouble. I hope not or else, yeah, I'm entirely in your boat.

    hey man! first: let me tell u that your channel it's super awesome and a huge help and lot of things for people like me
    who is starting in to this shoegaze world, like making music.
    i start my own solo project like 1year and half ago i sale my old year and start again
    i had a jazzmaster vm squier, a rat2, dd7, and trinity reverb 2 work with a boss katana 50, u phoria umc22, macbook 2009 with ableton 11 a fender p bass and now with a microphone of my friend who is a shure pga27
    i was completely naive when i try 2 recording my first time, i guess i'm still naive
    i know there is a world of different ways to do it but this is my real question
    i want to try in some songs a hard distortion on my rat which its pretty much distor and filter both at 12 of clock and volume at 1 and reverb kinda 3 or clock in decay and mix i'm not huge fan of work JUST with plugins honestly. but my question, finally is:
    i don't had a reamp there is another way to recording pedals ? i mean i check lot of videos but i think are not very specifics in work with lot a distortion and reverb i had other tracks who works with much less distortion or even cero distortion but when i use the amp sounds good and in the interface sounds pretty, grey i think for sorta speaking
    i mean i see some vid where some guy say u can use katana like reamping tool in a DI technique
    so what do u think? can i try to record the amp direct with the microphone ? without a reamp box ? and later mixed in ableton ?
    sorry for this looooong message, really it's just a feel kinda stuck since a couple of days :(
    thank u so much 4 reading this
    Love.

    • @pedalpartners
      @pedalpartners  Рік тому +1

      i mainly record with my amps mic'd up & sometimes di'd. everyone has a different workflow, you just gotta find what works best for you! :)
      a lot of my art, whether that be music or visuals, is based on improvisation & being in the moment. this is how i come up with the purest ideas 💗

    U guys are good guys. Side question, would you have a jc 22 over 40 for sound reasons? Is there anything it does better? Promise I wont wait for it to start writing music

    • @pedalpartners
      @pedalpartners  Рік тому +2

      i would pick 40 over 22 every time. sound wise they are very similar, the 40 has reverb & distortion where the 22 doesn't. the 40 also has more modulation options (vibrato & fixed chorus, compared to just chorus ensemble for 22)

    Do you have good experience with Amps Sims and how to get a good shogazy sound from them?

  • @gabe2968
    @gabe2968 Рік тому +1

    Save yourself a lot of money for more pedals and don't bother with mics or amps if you're not going to be playing live. All amps pretty much do the same thing and I'm sure everyone here will just be using the amp as a clean platform anyway so all that really matters then is the cab and speaker, so just use a good IR! You can sculpt most of your final guitar tone just using IRs to get the perfect fit in the mix
