It's a bit strange really. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard "Sultans". I was 1978 and I was driving to work to do a night shift at Paddington fire station in London. The track and Knopfler's guitar blew me away so obviously I bought the album. When "Communique" came out I bought that as well, I loved it and had no complaints. I never understood why people criticised the music. But then "Making Movies" was released and I'll never forget the day I bought it, took it back to my girlfriend's flat and played it. From the very first note I just thought "Mark Knopfler's playing guitar again!" and I knew instantly why people had been less than delighted with Communique. For the record I still love that album.
I can listen to this man talk, endlessly. When he talks about a song and how he came to create and write it and them when it;s breaks away into the actual recording. OH MY FRIGGIN HEAD! Chills and amazement to see and hear it materialize like that! Good Gawd! how TASTY this is! Mark is truly a treasure to behold. We are ALL blessed to have him in our time, producing his music! God bless you Mark and keep you safe, healthy and happy! You can't be thanked enough
The world is a much better place not only for Mark Knopfler's creativity, skill, artistry & musical genius.......we must also be grateful that he was able to dial it all in and focus it without self destructing like many musical artists. As a funny aside, after traveling the world for 20 years making wildlife films (my ex a cinematographer and I the sound recordist/camera assistant and general minion), In 2001 I gutted & remodled a 100+ year old building and created a Bistro at the age of 45. I was a Chef/owner (which means non-stop work) every nite as my staff and I cleaned the kitchen and mopped the floors I played 'The Sultan's of Swing' with the volume cranked. It gave me that last energetic boost at the end of the night. My tiny staff never saw it like that.....hahaha! Though one nite a new dishwasher said, after the song ended. Wow! that guy can really play the guitar. Can we hear that again? I said.....you sure can! Then said, I think you're gonna fit in here really well! All these years later I always make sure I have lots of Mark's music in the car while moving about. When in doubt......pop in a MK CD.
Hi Mark, I am a fan of yours since 1979, I saw you twice live in Zagreb and Milan many years ago, I have been playing guitar for many years but I am still a beginner, I'm always trying to learn your Tunnel of Love solo, my favorite solo , but with many difficulties. I love you and I always follow you, you are the best among the guitarists I love the most.
A great narrator, excellent songwriter and an allround nice guy :-) I love the comment about the Junkyard!.....and the reference that everything has a price. Clever fellow! Mark is one of the few who, despite fame and fortune, has kept his feet firmly on the ground. I also hail from the Banks of the Tyne - I´ve been to the places he sings about in "Down to the Waterline" or "Tunnel of love" :-)
Making Movies is one of the best albums ever made. It knocked me out when I first heard it in 1980. It's tough for a band to best their debut album but Mark did it.
ELEKSON KURBAH it was seen that way back then by some of the critics, but as we know that opinion has changed within years and now it's regarded as its as great as Knopfler's debut
The narrator is John Illsley, the bass player for Dire Straits. He also produced Guitar Stories, chronicling some of Mark's favorite guitars. I'm quite certain he was aware of what the critics were saying at the time. Just goes to prove, those who can write songs, write songs. Those who can't...critique.
you have mixed two documentaries, this one is narrated by Mark Strong, the one you are referring two is called Guitar Stories and it's indeed narrated by illsley but it's a totally different documentary
I love the interviews - They provide such insight into the music & the man. I've really come to appreciate "Communique" & "On Every Street" more and more over time to be as good as any of the others despite those two not receiving as good of reviews from the "critics."
Congrats., my brother mark, you did make it, and bigger than most artists of your time, and your still here today, and be here tomorrow, YOU DID IT.!!!!
Lady writer was a huge success. 🙄 Every time it plays the whole environment comes to life. Please! It would be hard to find anything wrong with lady writer. So much skill and bounce. Shake it to the ground music.🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
1978...hmm 23..yes around about then and before hanging around those old time pubs right there London S.E.8... Sultans...so vivid mentally then and always. Wonderful irony in the lyrics and so appealing to my consciousness. Now add in the amazing licks and the narrative vocals. Loved it then and always THANK YOU. Romeo and Juliet so wistful with those magic chords. Two desert island discs c'mon that's not fair sir. Respect to the late Charlie Gillett so ahead of his time. Some smart alec music snob might say Mark Knopfler "isn't such a great singer" just like elsewhere some squarehead compared Nina Simone detrimentally with Ella. Kind of missed the soul of the performance (From a little person)
Thank you for sharing. 😌🌈😌. To me I'm glad those stories wouldn't stop from being told and I believe many others. Many people can see the true side of music in your tales of adventure 😩😌🌈
I remember getting on a bus in Bristol to basically clean a pub cellar and I had enough money after the bus fare to buy this single (Sultans of Swing) on the way home. Still have it. Not picture disc or picture cover. Just the 7"
They reckon the 2nd album was a flop who does these surveys Jesus Christ not in us real Dire Straits fans anyway those surveys can all go get stuffed to all D.S & M.K fans God bless you all please stay safe happy and healthy cheers from Australia
It was the one included in the "Arena" documentary on the band in about 1980. The credits of the documentary seem to suggest it was the last gig David Knopfler played with the band.

Said it before, now saying it again....I could listen to the National all day, perfection in the master's hands. Thanks MK
Such a great documentary about a an interesting and talented storyteller and musician.
The best guitarist ever. His guitar skills mature like a good wine

What a good man and pleasant genuine person he seems to be.
Trop fort et trop bon.une belle technique. Merci mark knopfler pour ton génie. Richard. A plus
I've seen this before, but I never tire of watching Mark.
Why the narrator said that the second album is a disappointment? Its one of the best in the history of music. Cmon.
i agree 100%
greetings
i have run a million miles over the years with the songs of Comunique

Come back to San Francisco...we'll get you a new Giants t-shirt. And thanks for creating the songs that got me thru my university days.
Communique is a great album. Not sure why it was a disappointment at the time. Making Movies is amazing. Brothers in Arms is a masterpiece.
Its not great album, its average.....for them!!!
Learning so much! Thank you 👏✨❤️
Great stuff great artist...
👑
Another very good one.
Alchemy the best live record.
💙
Super!!
From my perspective, the first Dire Straits album is the single best album ever made. Far beyond of being called a masterpiece.
awesome
The dice were loaded from the start, let them roll,!!!
Grand professeur
what sound were you looking

Mark knopfler, What is your favourite electric guitar?
I think is a Red Strat, caus Hank has one
And the full video is here: vimeo.com/48792226
Thanks a lot, sir!
good
the mark knopfler the ginus
I have heard Mark was born with a tiny pick in his right hand. Any truth to this? 🤗
Must have been a rumor. Sorry for my misinformation. Mark rarely used a pick
Goodness me
The actual story was that Mark was born clutching a tiny red telecaster
Must have been quite uncomfortable in his mother’s womb
Our innate innovative playing I suppose unique.👌
the '' KNOPF '' is god
Greates gutterstes .. Ⓜ️ark king the gutter
always a biker :-):-)
