I picked up the Mazda 3 2017 base with the 2L MT, great cars. Fuel efficient, comfortable, sharp looking, can handle roads quite well. If you're more of a sporty guy it's a great car to take on some back roads, good sized cabin as I'm 6"6 and can drive stick in it.
nissan2002feb25 that's pretty much the reason. I hate how people do that. I've seen some 9th gen Civic SI that have superchargers on them. They make 333whp, and they aren't that loud honestly.,
I'd pick the Civic. Mazda 3 looks gorgeous and has a real 6-speed automatic transmission, but for the overall reliability, I put more trust to the Honda brand than Mazda. The interior looks nicer on the Civic in my opinion, and Honda's CVTs are more responsive than any other CVTs I've ever experienced so It's no huge deal.
Imo the Mazda 3 wins this. The Civic wins in a few areas like Roman mentioned, but the Skyactive engine is so much nicer than that CTV in the Honda. Good performance and great fuel economy with no CVT rubber banding.
luckyyu2004 Rubber banding doesn't mean a literal rubber band, people use that term to refer to that CVT gearless droning/stretching feeling. The new Civic tries to mimic gears though.
+luckyyu2004 I have a 2015 Civic. "rubberbanding" is actually a good way to describe what the CVT feels like. The car seems to jump sometimes if you press too hard on the gas. It takes some getting used to. Overall I like my civic but only time will tell if CVT proves to be as reliable as the old tried and true automatic tranny.
The reason its number one in the segment is Honda's reputation. However, I think Honda has been free riding on that reputation for a while, and not putting out the best product.
I took my 2013 Ford Focus into the dealership and they installed new clutches. I think they have been redesigned. The car now runs beautifully and is very sporty. When it works it works good. Ford also increased the warranty on the Focus transmissions to 7 years. So drop your jerky car off at the dealership and they will put in the new clutches. Do it!
PS- the new Civic looks like it was put together with junk parts from the wreckers. LOL Would look good in a Mad Max movie and the new car smell in the 2016 Civic is overpowering. Toxic. The CVT transmission belt will also loosen and get very clanky after 2 years.
He talked about "liking the new civic best", yet he never looked like he was really enjoying it. The Mazda3, however, seemed to get the most visceral reaction out of him. He was smiling, and when he had the tires squeal, well, I thought his underwear might have gotten sticky. He did not say which engine was in the Mazda3, nor the mileage it gets. Perhaps because it would have showed how puny a gain Honda got with the CVT, while dampening the intangible I call fun, but is really more complex. It is the feel of the car itself, how well it feels to sit in, and corner in and drive, whether it is on the open road or in rush hour traffic, and even the most abysmal situations. If the feeling carries well through all that, and you still want more, that is what I call fun. He did not mention that the Mazda has a geared tranny, not a CVT, and every model, even the top one, has a manual available. I'll bet if he had a 2.5L with the manual transmission, he'd be saying "Honda what??" about the 1.5 turbo with its CVT. Mazda makes some kick ass manuals... best I have driven. I have been a Mazda fan for years, and I respect Honda, as they do try to inject some sportiness into their cars, However, and I have had this happen at 3 different dealers: 1 in NY, and 2 in Northern VA. You can look at the car, take it for a test drive, but when it comes time to talk price, you get this attitude like you smell funny, and they all say a variation on "we don't have to discount them to sell them, after all they are Hondas". The first time it happened was in the late 1980's the last two since I moved to VA in roughly 2002, and I forget the 2nd time. The second time I admit was a test to see if they did the same thing in VA, and the 3rd was to see if the other dealer did it too, as I had no intention of buying a Honda. Sorry I ran on a bit here
Mazda 3 NA+6 speed with skyactiv so much more fun to drive than cvt + turbo. The feels, the sound, the respon of NA skyactiv with additional features to drive better are fantastic
I love that you post stories like these, about cars that normal people drive. A lot of auto channels focus too much on high priced cars. Keep up the good work!
I just bought the Honda EX-L with 1.5 L Turbo and I was expecting a nice basic car focused on mediocre luxury and great gas mileage. After one week of owning, I am more than pleased with my purchase. I actually got 47 MPG at 65 MPH (24 miles). I found it difficult to repeat the gas mileage because the car is so fun to drive. The turbo is more than enough and runs sub 7 0-60. That's all I need for a $24,000 car. This video may be jaded but I don't need to drive the other brands. Honda hooked me line and sinker and gave me a fun car with excellent gas mileage!
Mazda3 is a great car but honestly Mazda, Toyota and Honda build great cars because they are designed by japanese and they take pride in quality. I would never buy a car designed by Americans because I know how lazy quality Americans put in their own work. I know people that have Toyotas and Hondas for more than 20+ years with over 300,000 miles and they are still running great. They just do yearly maintenance.
Tom Shong yeah. There are also some imports that aren't too good like Hyundai. Mitsubishi seems like a dying brand since I dont see many of those on the streets
+Tom Shong that is true. Some American cars look great and are starting to get more reliable. Japan cars are on another level though, they give reliability , looks , speed you name it in such a low price
Why would you skip, when the point of this is to see if the new car stacks up. Are you getting the best car for your buck? How will you know if bmi watch the Honda part? haha 😃😂
Its amazing how different the new civic is when compared to the outgoing. Definitely went from being just an appliance to more of a fun car. Mazda still stands out with its looks.
Damn Roman, looks like one of those events where you get a quick briefing with your coffee and donut before you rush out to do your thing before you have to catch a taxi to the airport. Good job considering the time constraints.
I have a Camaro SS and a Camaro Z28. I bought a new 2015 CIVIC LX coupe back in June '15. I'm so Happy with it. I don't care to drive fast or think I'm the fastest on the road. I love my CIVIC, CTV and everything.
I went with the Mazda3. Going from a 2003 Audi A4 1.8T I purchased 13 years ago to a 2016 Mazda3 was a giant leap in technology and fuel economy. I probably will miss the Quattro in the winter though.
It's sad to me that, as cars get more and more modern, the more and more I wish for the "good ol' days", small cars that were fuel efficient and fun to drive.
My test drive results from a 2016 Mazda 3, 2016 Focus SE with Sport Package (2.0L) priced at 22K MSRP and 2016 Civic EX-T with the 174HP engine 23K MSRP. Out the door the Focus will cost about $18,500 with 0% APR financing, the Civic will cost about $22,000 with about 3% financing for best borrowers: Note: I never even bothered driving the Mazda 3. It is too small of a car and too claustrophobic for a large male over 5'10", so that's all I have to say about the Mazda. I walked off the lot without trying it. Mazda's are made for midgets. Civic has more leg room, trunk space and head room. Civic's interior looks like something a college kid would drive, not necessarily someone over 30 Civic accelerates better, feels more fun on straightaways Civic's steering is numb Ford's steering is numb but is more nimble and handles turns better, handling is enjoyable Civic offers a lot more at 23K MSRP but offers very little incentives, price is about 3K more when all is said and done, plus higher insurance and higher interest on your payments Civic had push button start, Ford did not at the SE trim Civic had a better and larger display with a lot of camera safety features Ford has a rear view camera but the display is tiny, but usable Which would I choose? Surprisingly, the Focus. At 0% APR and 3K less, it was a very decent offering. It is a less reliable car with worse resale, but I'm saving 3K up front, and it is certainly a capable vehicle. I would be more than happy with the Ford. I have nothing bad to say about the Honda other than it wasn't the better deal in my view. At 3K more, I'm getting to price points closer to a full size pickup, which makes me start thinking about other vehicles entirely.
I just bought a Mazda 3 5 door and I am 6'0", room in driver seat and rear seat is spacious enough for me. You missed out on driving a great car. I don't know how you wouldn't fit in a Mazda 3. The guy who sold me my Mazda owns the 2016 Mazda 3 4 door and he is 6'2".
I'm 5'11" and the Mazda 3 has plenty of room. Just as much as the Focus. Good luck with Fords disgusting dry dual clutch. I'm sure you're going to love going to the dealer for part replacements and tcm flashes. I haven't experienced the new Civic yet but I can assure you Mazda has old Henry beat when it comes to drive quality.
I've had a Ford for years. They're reliable. As far as resale? Man most cars aren't valuable or worth selling if you've used them long term. You're right stick with Ford
So Honda brought their top of the line Civic but only brought the 3i instead of a 3s. That says a lot to me. I wonder if Roman would have still said the Civic was the sportiest if he had the 3s with the bigger engine and wheels.
Mazda 3 is the way to go if you can afford the price. Unfortunately it was out of my price range...but my brother has this Mazda and he loves it! I ended up getting the 2016 Honda Civic EX. I love it!
I love the Mazda 3 but I ended up buying a 2016 EXTL civic instead after driving it. I must say I'm very happy with it sure doesn't feel like my old 92 civic! "Civic" has grown up! 👍also i love watching your show 👍
You the man Roman! Thanks for the comparison. I'm loving the new civic but I'm definitely going to consider a Mazda as my next car. Keep the vids coming you guys are great!
Roman, nice job, considering the time duration allowed and the lack of a camera man. I used to own a 1993 Honda Civic coupe when the coupe debuted, currently have a 2009 Mazda 6 6spd, and aspire to acquire a 3g model in the next few years. That is unless Honda can once again sway me in their direction. The wife hates driving the manual though, so I am really hoping that the Civic Si will offer the dual clutch auto. Your review is very promising, and I can't wait to see the Si.
When my 08 Mazda 3 was in the shop getting repaired after someone hit it I was given a Toyota Corolla for a week. The ride felt like a cloud compared to my 3, but damn was it boring. Glad Mazda is still making cars for us few people willing to sacrifice a little comfort for fun.
Roman, my old lad, this is an absolutely cracking review, you really are the consummate professional. Plus, you made several really good points - 1) When they make a car that's good on the Nürburgring, and that's all you have, a car that's good round the Nürburgring. How that benefits normal driving is anybody's guess. 2) 99% of cars are bought by motorists, not enthusiasts, and motor manufacturers realize this. They produce cars to satisfy the majority. 3) The above majority are interested in reliability and fuel economy. Performance, handling and roadholding aren't on their shopping list. Mazda produce very sporty cars, yet have a small market share. And a couple of other points - 4) It's great to see Roman keeps himself so fit: talks and walks for 20 yards and he's gasping for breath. 0:18 5) I still don't understand the obsession with manual gearboxes. CVT is the future.
I appreciate the fact that you tried to think before typing this time. I mean, your comments aren't very informative given the wing of the mental hospital you're in, but it's a step up. I'd give it a soft step up from ill-informed two year old.
Tyler Pritchett Tyler, my old mate, it's always a pleasure to hear from you. I'm glad you enjoyed my comment, I dumbed it down especially for you. Why not rewrite your last sentence so it makes sense ? It looks like you've played my favourite trick of altering the sentence, and not bothering to reread it.
I never said I enjoyed your comment, kid. You should take your own advice to heart. Reread my comment and you'll see. Also, I notice you're now so desperate, you're going after a minor grammar error brought on by a tablet error to attempt to discredit me. Of course, I also appreciate your effort to take it easy on yourself. But remember, when you dumb it down for yourself and say it's for someone else, that's lying. That's not good. I did fix that minor mistake for you, though. I thought it would help you. You need all the help you can get.
Tyler Pritchett Tyler, old friend, I'll point out two things; 1) You've completely rewritten your comment, which I find rather odd. 2) I didn't realize you actually meant to type ' soft step ', I thought it was an error. As even Google doesn't know what the phrase means, would you mind enlightening me ?
I don't understand why this guy is complaining about speed when he is driving economy cars. I'm looking for fuel efficiency and safety. I'm not looking for speed. I didn't realise that in today's day in age we feel the need to compare and make economy vehicles like porches.
I know people hate on the CVT transmission a lot, but I've been driving a new model corolla for the past year with one in it, and it honestly hasn't been a bad thing at all. It makes the most of an incredibly underpowered powertrain by trying to keep the ratios in the most efficient mode for fuel economy as well as power when needed. As a commuter, it's a really smooth system. I'm curious to see how dependable they are after 100k miles, but in the mean time, I'm going to drive my car until the wheels fall off.
When it comes to cars for entry level 4 cylinders....you should look at 3 things....fuel economy , safety, and reliability. If you complain about ladi da hp torque and cvts....you are a sucker.. You were told you need a faster more expensive car by brain washing you to believe in the notion of social class and your worth being measured by the car you drive and have no idea if the concept of a depreciating asset. Keep your money in your wallet and not at the pump while you can.
I'd rather pay to fix an auto trans than a cvt, which is comparably more costly to repair. Also, who's really caring about social norms and peer acceptance? You finance the best car you can possibly afford if that's what matters, not some entry level compact car lol. And btw, there's nothing wrong with being knowledgable about what you're buying, esp when it's the second most expensive purchase most people make throughout their entire lives.
The 3 is the best car, followed by the Focus. Notice the 3 and Corolla had plastic hubcaps, and were listed at topped out price, while the civic was displayed at base price, while the topped out turbo was tested. A little honesty would go a long way, and a CVT ruins any car, so any redeeming qualities of the new civic are canceled out. This test is biased, cheap, set up and fixed. FOR SHAME Roman, FOR SHAME. The journalistic integrity of this video is sorely missing.
No the corolla is the best here's why It's been around little longer and doesn't go through as many updates and the resale value is insane and the 1.8l vvt I may be slow ass shit but it's perfect because it's low cost and dependable the thing is with Toyota only will update there vehicles if they need to. that's why they sell so well and not being updated every few months.
+Chevy sucks You're right because the general public bought the Corolla as an appliance and it service everyone really well. I own one myself that's how i know but as fun to drive and engaging. The Mazda3 is the one to buy, if you're that sort of person.
I wish the reviews for each car comparison were more detailed. I'm really interested in a detailed interior, exterior, driving, tech, quality, value for money review for 2016 Mazda 3 and 2016 Honda Civic. Make it happen please!!!
I love my 2017 Ford Focus SEL sedan in oxford white and is fully loaded. Has that powerful 2.0L GDI 160HP engine. And 6 speed dual clutch select shift automatic. I love the sync 3 navigation and 10 speaker song audio system with subroofer. Has better get up and go speed. Has LED lights and fog lights, sunroof, back up sensors, rear view camera, 17 inch alloy wheels with black painted pockets, and has the sync 3 system with the touchscreen. With ambient lighting night mood lighting accents.
11:55 Roman, you say you dont like CVTs in a sports car. I understand that, but the sedan is a commuter car; built solely for the purpose of transportation from A to B while doing that safely and efficiently. A normal driver of a civic sedan is a commuter and most probably dont care what the transmission is. I find it pointless for people to complain of these types of transmissions. Dont give me the whole "It has a turbo so it automatically needs a manual". Some people dont want a manual for a reason, nor is it any of your concern for what they purchase.
+Konrad Checinski If his 2015 is slow, it isn't because it's a CVT. A CVT can be faster, but most CVTs are a tuned/geared for maximum fuel economy. There are sport models of the Civic with manual transmissions if you like shifting gears and don't care about losing fuel economy. This is a commuter car.
***** You cant make anyone happy anymore. I too bought a 2015 civic coupe and the CVT performs its purpose; to get me from A to B with no trouble. There isnt any buzzing or rubberbanding. Its responsive when needed.
review cars for a living, so a short drive is adequate. I had driven the 2014 Civic, 2015 Focus, 2015 Mazda3 i Sport with 2.0 engine and hands down 3 is the more engaging car to drive. The steering on the 3 is great, not too heavy or too light, the motor and tranny shifts when it should. As for the focus, ride and handle is good too but dual clutches has it quirk when driving on stop and go situations. The Civic rides and handle well too but the engine lack HP, plus the CVT eliminated any fun to drive factor.
focus: 25000+ 2.0L 165hp, mazda 3: 25000+, 2.0L 155hp. corolla : 21000+ 1.8L130hp. and he drive a 1.5T 174hp cost 27000+ civic to compare those lower power and cheaper car. that is a mazda 2.5L HB price......
I used to drive a 1.8L 2009 Honda Civic 2 door, and as much as I wanted to hate it, that was a fun little car. Did they really lose that? Was my car special? I could always chirp the tires. It handled nice, flat and predictably, and the engine had lightning fast reaction just like the steering. Tranny needed to be manually downshifted to get into instant power though, which was funner anyway. Maybe Roman was just doing it wrong. It was great being able to push the car hard and not worry about wear and tear repairs as well. Never gave me an issue. Just asked for more till the day I sold it.
This "review" is BS. He's basically trying to make an educated guess by driving the cars for a few minutes down a straight line. He's commenting on the cars' handling by doing one simple u-turn. Are you kidding?! Do a regular review that does the cars justice, or don't do one at all.
Actually, Roman has spent a lot of time behind the wheel of all of these cars. His informed opinion is based on much more driving experience and time behind than a U turn. Honestly that's why he's in front of the camera and you are not.
+The Fast Lane Car "...that's why he's in front of the camera and you are not." That's a very mature and professional response. Well done! Unlike Roman, I wouldn't be in front of the camera doing a half-assed job. Now, nowhere in this "review" does it state or appear, that he "has spent a lot of time behind the wheel of all of these cars". He mentiones many times that he is in a hurry and is rushing to put seatbelts on, etc. Please, find a place in the video, where it clearly shows how much time he has had with these cars.
+The Fast Lane Car I agree with you! Roman's reviews are far more detailed and in depth, just because this particular review was short it does not justify any lack of on-point summary on the cars he tested, afterwards he is summarizing in short, but he has an extensive experience with these cars. By the way, we can all see that these are cars with a consistent history, and not some radical new models, so I believe these cars were reviewed spot on, and if we need to search and find high points on them it will be a bit too fanatic like.
Never thought I'd actually ever praise a Civic, but the true redesign is quite nice. And I'm no Honda fan by any means. At least now it doesn't look like it's stuck in the 90s anymore.
Does America not get the Opel (GM) GTC, that is in this car segment and has a great chassis and some decent engine options. I picked up an sri 2l 170bhp earlier this year. They are very nice to drive, using the 'sportier' suspension that was once only for the vxr models once. Nice car, handles well, bad fuel efficiency. My older saloon (sedan) spanked it in terms of economy. That is my only complaint, but ad performance and enjoy ability is way up, I cant complain to hard.
So much complexity in these newer cars make future repair costs higher, IMO. CVT trans, more expensive to fix, turbo, ditto. All the electronic safety bells and whistles, more things to break. The last relatively simple car in this category is the 2016 Corolla L with 4 speed auto trans. The last Corolla with this trans option. All 2017's have CVT.
I’ll take the Ford Focus as an SEL or titanium trim level in a Sedan over hatchback. Don’t bash about the transmissions because they were updated for the 2015 and up being re programmed and updated software as for the DCT but for the select shift is a good one.
+Joe Antonio Nah, this is the BASE S, which does come with covers. The S Plus and Premium get the allows. Same goes for the other trims. It's just that 99% of video reviews of the S show at least the Plus version.
Interesting review, I have just purchased the Mazda 3 GT Tech based on the drive and horsepower and fuel economy. I took the Civic out but did not appreciate the transmission feel, in addition, I understand that there has been some major recalls on the product already. I am surer that Honda will get it right, just not in time for my purchase
Great review Roman:)) Honda has been a bit sleepy for the last 4-5 years but they have eventually awaken themselves into the business. I wonder whether Mitsubishi would ever come back to the first line....or Subaru from the times of the SVX phenomenal car...Thanx and Ciao:)))
+Gabe Pettinicchio Yea, the model was a 3i Grand Touring (2.0 4cyl.) You can tell because the Speedo is in the center and it has dual-zone climate control. The i Touring has standard Air Conditioning.
Test drove the Corolla S, Mazda 3 Touring, and the Honda Civic all 2016 models. Civic FOR THE WIN - you really get a lot more for your $ when you compare the 3 and you get the best MPG's
I just bought a 2018Mazda 3. Even today its still a good looking car, good quality feeling, safety features is okay. I live in Denmark where cars are very expensive so with a 5 year old Mazda 3 I get a drivers car for acceptable price.
That reaction from Roman in the Mazda 3 was all the justification I needed. I definitely bought the right car.
Indeed!
+Mad Pistol No doubt for that. For me it's even better than the new Civic. :)
Don't get me wrong. I like the new civic, but that CVT killed it for me. Put a 6 speed auto and manual in it, and it would be an awesome car.
+Mad Pistol Agree. I may consider the Civic if they offer 6 speed manual on the Touring trim. But even so, I think I still like the Mazda3 better. :)
+vader11111 Mazda3 2.5 Grand Touring with a six speed manual!!
Yes, yes and Yes! Love this video and didn't know your 1st car was a Civic. I'm so happy to hear that you liked the Civic the best.
Yup Roman's first car was a Civic. Just like the yellow one in the video, except Roman's was red.
I like that guy just a bit more now.
+The Fast Lane Car Good God, Roman must have been in his fifties when he got his first car !!!!
the only time he laughed and smiled was the Mazda though ;)
+fnsonicrick Yep. So glad I got a 3!
6 months after that Civic is released it will have two giant fart cans and a wing on the back, wide stretched wheels and yellow fog lights.
+Frank Magana a tow hook makes a car rice?
It won't be until there are some on the used market for $1500 bucks so some high schooler can afford one
+Bryan Doherty I was wondering why I didn't see rice yet. You solved the mystery!
nissan2002feb25 that's pretty much the reason. I hate how people do that. I've seen some 9th gen Civic SI that have superchargers on them. They make 333whp, and they aren't that loud honestly.,
Frank Magana you have a valid point. But keep in mind .
I kinda miss the daily uploads in the morning- I'd wake up and watch a TFL Car video to get my day started!
This video was an exception as this review was embargoed until midnight EST. We will have another video tomorrow morning as usual. Please stay tuned.
+The Fast Lane Car Oh okay thanks for the info!
+Josh Bosh chill bill cipher
+The Fast Lane Car Did Nathan quit or something?
+SadDadDancer
Yes I heard he is taking over for Jonny Lieberman at Motor trend, he will be missed here.
You couldn't be any more right! I've test driven both and the Honda Civic is more responsive and feels lighter and has a great suspension
Imo the Mazda 3 wins this. The Civic wins in a few areas like Roman mentioned, but the Skyactive engine is so much nicer than that CTV in the Honda. Good performance and great fuel economy with no CVT rubber banding.
Just imagine if the 2016 civic had a six speed automatic, wouldn't that be nice! (It would beat the Mazda)
+tipoomaster it has a metal belt in the CVT...not sure where you get the fact ...and the top civic model has 200hp at the crank
luckyyu2004 Rubber banding doesn't mean a literal rubber band, people use that term to refer to that CVT gearless droning/stretching feeling.
+Nick V I have 400k on my 08'. civic hybrid with CVT, original engine, transmission, and hybrid battery for that matter. No complains here.
Never thought I'd say this, but I think I want a civic.
When it works it works good. is that why the Civic has been the best selling car in it's segment for the past 17 years running in N America?
He talked about "liking the new civic best", yet he never looked like he was really enjoying it. The Mazda3, however, seemed to get the most visceral reaction out of him.
+Kyle SoSik Sorry but in case you haven't notice. Toyota and Honda are designed and built in the good old USA. LOL
Tom Shong I said 'designed'
Kyle SoSik
My bad! Ur correct. Nonetheless, the domestic cars starting to looks better than the Asian counter part.
I stayed up all night for the 2016 review.! Just skip to 10:30
.
So do i, lets have some ☕️
Why would you skip, when the point of this is to see if the new car stacks up. Are you getting the best car for your buck? How will you know if bmi watch the Honda part? haha 😃😂
+Taofiki Gafar h
Corolla, had it 4 years now, done nothing but follow the maintenance schedule in the owners manual. Love it.
Out the door the Focus will cost about $18,500 with 0% APR financing, the Civic will cost about $22,000 with about 3% financing for best borrowers:
Note: I never even bothered driving the Mazda 3. It is too small of a car and too claustrophobic for a large male over 5'10", so that's all I have to say about the Mazda. I walked off the lot without trying it. Mazda's are made for midgets.
Civic has more leg room, trunk space and head room.
Civic's interior looks like something a college kid would drive, not necessarily someone over 30
Civic accelerates better, feels more fun on straightaways
Civic's steering is numb
Ford's steering is numb but is more nimble and handles turns better, handling is enjoyable
Civic offers a lot more at 23K MSRP but offers very little incentives, price is about 3K more when all is said and done, plus higher insurance and higher interest on your payments
Civic had push button start, Ford did not at the SE trim
Civic had a better and larger display with a lot of camera safety features
Ford has a rear view camera but the display is tiny, but usable
Which would I choose? Surprisingly, the Focus. At 0% APR and 3K less, it was a very decent offering. It is a less reliable car with worse resale, but I'm saving 3K up front, and it is certainly a capable vehicle. I would be more than happy with the Ford. I have nothing bad to say about the Honda other than it wasn't the better deal in my view. At 3K more, I'm getting to price points closer to a full size pickup, which makes me start thinking about other vehicles entirely.
Think long term " Reliability" Resell value too
I just bought a Mazda 3 5 door and I am 6'0", room in driver seat and rear seat is spacious enough for me. You missed out on driving a great car. I don't know how you wouldn't fit in a Mazda 3. The guy who sold me my Mazda owns the 2016 Mazda 3 4 door and he is 6'2".
The Mazda is the largest inside of the cars you mentioned, wtf are you on about?
I love it!
Why does he keep comparing these purely econ cars to sports cars? If you want a faster sportier car buy a sports car.
Plus, you made several really good points -
1) When they make a car that's good on the Nürburgring, and that's all you have, a car that's good round the Nürburgring.
And a couple of other points -
4) It's great to see Roman keeps himself so fit: talks and walks for 20 yards and he's gasping for breath. 0:18
5) I still don't understand the obsession with manual gearboxes.
Tyler Pritchett Tyler, old friend, I'll point out two things;
1) You've completely rewritten your comment, which I find rather odd.
2) I didn't realize you actually meant to type ' soft step ', I thought it was an error. As even Google doesn't know what the phrase means, would you mind enlightening me ?
Where is the chevy cruze to compare it with? Roman, How does it compare to the Cruze?
got the Mazda 3 gt after this video :) Thanks, Roman
Thanks Roman. Your work is much appreciated.
I don't understand why this guy is complaining about speed when he is driving economy cars. I'm looking for fuel efficiency and safety. I'm not looking for speed. I didn't realise that in today's day in age we feel the need to compare and make economy vehicles like porches.
thanks for praising the mazda 3. I just bought one. And I am a Czech expat too!
+waclosh Roman says Ahoj
waclosh yup waiting for black Friday in order to get that mazda 3 hatch
I plan to buy one also after I get through with the VW buyback. Hopefully in Soul Red.
Sorry to burst you guys bubble but the best way to decide is test drive them your selves.
I'm curious to see how dependable they are after 100k miles, but in the mean time, I'm going to drive my car until the wheels fall off.
how about 2016 mazda 3 VS 2016 civic ? 0-60 and fuel economy
The new Civic sure is desirable. ...very nice.
A new civic CVT trans costs 600 dollars... Just pop it in. Not that expensive.... lol
It's much better than the 2015 Civic, but for me I still prefer the Mazda3.
+M Danahey Uhh that was a base corolla. most the cars were listed MSRP at 25, the corolla was at 21 lol.
No the corolla is the best here's why
It's been around little longer and doesn't go through as many updates and the resale value is insane and the 1.8l vvt I may be slow ass shit but it's perfect because it's low cost and dependable the thing is with Toyota only will update there vehicles if they need to. that's why they sell so well and not being updated every few months.
+Chevy sucks You're right because the general public bought the Corolla as an appliance and it service everyone really well. I own one myself that's how i know but as fun to drive and engaging. The Mazda3 is the one to buy, if you're that sort of person.
Smart guy I'm driving my 1996 Nissan hardbody till the block cracks then get a Nissan Z.
+M Danah how can u put the focus 2nd ? lol its such a shity car...
+the fast car lane hey Roman which one of those cars would you say has the most comfortable seats? thank you for another great video.
toyota corolla s with the hub caps? how come?
+game hopper Base S model. Just like all the other trims (LE and LE Eco), you have to upgrade to Plus or Premium to get alloys.
+SadDadDancer the base S does not come with hubs
utubeyaw It does, actually. It gets unique hubs though. Base models of all trims get hubs. Look it up. I even saw one on the road this very day.
I wish the reviews for each car comparison were more detailed.
I'm really interested in a detailed interior, exterior, driving, tech, quality, value for money review for 2016 Mazda 3 and 2016 Honda Civic.
Make it happen please!!!
Guys can you do a matchup between the 2016 Jetta 1.8t vs the 2016 turbo civic it's going to be a pretty close one drag race and everything

Roman, you say you dont like CVTs in a sports car.
Some people dont want a manual for a reason, nor is it any of your concern for what they purchase.
clearly you haven't driven many cvts. they suck , its like driving with a slipping clutch
+Konrad Checinski I own a '15 Civic coupe with a CVT and it is smooth. A continuous transfer of power.
+Kellan Larson, yes, like a slipping clutch. jet engine noise, slow as hell.
So you compared all base model engines for other cars but you chose a top of the line Turbo to compare to the rest? Seems legit.
Could you please tell me which one has more comfortable softer ride?
I wonder why the 2015 Cruze wasn't included in this comparison? It's still a great little car and the sales numbers are still proving it.
review cars for a living, so a short drive is adequate.
Based on your drives on this video I think the Mazda has the best performance. accelerates fast, contours smoothly, squelches nice
the type r comes out? will it comes out in the US?
No need for the video. Mazda 3 is the winner. You the best Mica!
What is the ground clearance of the 2016 Honda Civic EX-L? I cannot seem to find the full dimensions anywhere. Thanks for the help and direction.
Hi, I currently own a EX-L and what is your question? All I can tell you is the car is wider and 3 inches larger from the inside.
I want the ground clearance, I have other specs.
i miss the videos with roman and Nathan.
Ikr! where is Nathan!
Always fun to watch your videos!
42 mpg. Nice.
eh
I used to drive a 1.8L 2009 Honda Civic 2 door, and as much as I wanted to hate it, that was a fun little car. Did they really lose that? Was my car special? I could always chirp the tires. It handled nice, flat and predictably, and the engine had lightning fast reaction just like the steering. Tranny needed to be manually downshifted to get into instant power though, which was funner anyway. Maybe Roman was just doing it wrong. It was great being able to push the car hard and not worry about wear and tear repairs as well. Never gave me an issue. Just asked for more till the day I sold it.
Needless to say, the Civic kicked all the other cars in that comparison ass.
love they video roman, keep them comming man
While I do enjoy my Accord Sport, I will never get a CVT equipped car EVER again.
+The Fast Lane Car "...that's why he's in front of the camera and you are not."
That's a very mature and professional response.
+PhDream Haha you mad?
You mad bro?
Never thought I'd actually ever praise a Civic, but the true redesign is quite nice. And I'm no Honda fan by any means. At least now it doesn't look like it's stuck in the 90s anymore.
If Honda was gonna let you drive the more powerful civic then they shouldve given you the mazda with 2.5 engine
Why was Elantra not included?
I noticed another guy reverse parking the previous car in the background, after Roman barrels into the parking bays facing forward! :P
when do you going to test the 2016 BMW X1???
Does America not get the Opel (GM) GTC, that is in this car segment and has a great chassis and some decent engine options. I picked up an sri 2l 170bhp earlier this year. They are very nice to drive, using the 'sportier' suspension that was once only for the vxr models once. Nice car, handles well, bad fuel efficiency. My older saloon (sedan) spanked it in terms of economy. That is my only complaint, but ad performance and enjoy ability is way up, I cant complain to hard.
Loved this video! Good job guys!!!
What are your views on matt farah
that u-turn in the middle of the intersection cant be legal?
There's no sign saying "No U-Turn" so it's legal
it's more sporty...and modern... until all the other companies do a redesign lol
sometime i wish i could go back in time just to do one thing, neutralize the inventor of CVT!
Don’t bash about the transmissions because they were updated for the 2015 and up being re programmed and updated software as for the DCT but for the select shift is a good one.
did they took out the nice wheels on that corolla??!! the S trim does not come with plastic covers!!! makes me suspicious...
+Joe Antonio I don't think it's the S trim. I think it is the LE trim with some options on it.
narutofan9285 only the S trim comes in that color with that front bumber design
+narutofan9285 LE premium
+Joe Antonio Nah, this is the BASE S, which does come with covers. The S Plus and Premium get the allows. Same goes for the other trims. It's just that 99% of video reviews of the S show at least the Plus version.
Interesting review, I have just purchased the Mazda 3 GT Tech based on the drive and horsepower and fuel economy. I took the Civic out but did not appreciate the transmission feel, in addition, I understand that there has been some major recalls on the product already. I am surer that Honda will get it right, just not in time for my purchase
Why did you not test the civic out vs the 2.5 mazda3?? I think that's kind of unfair.
i think the mazda thing had to do with ford owning them and a lot of problems noted with them.
Also not a fan of the cvt's but what I don't like in that civic is the electronic gauges. That should be optional or secondary to the standard.
I wish you had compared the s model Mazda 3 (2.5L) to the new Civic. You drove the i model Mazda 3 which comes with the 2.0L.
Roman, which motor did the 3 have?
I wanted to know if the 3 had, the 2.0 or the 2.5.
+Gabe Pettinicchio
2.0, judging by the wheels and gauge cluster
+Steve G. Thanks Steve. I wish these video producers would at least read & take part in the comments section.
+Gabe Pettinicchio Yea, the model was a 3i Grand Touring (2.0 4cyl.) You can tell because the Speedo is in the center and it has dual-zone climate control. The i Touring has standard Air Conditioning.
You keep saying Corolla is 2nd. That's not true. Look at sales websites. Corolla is 1st, Civic is 2nd for the past year and a half.
What about the nissan sentra? The sentra competes better than he ford does in the segment, i dont see why you guys wouldnt include it
Test drove the Corolla S, Mazda 3 Touring, and the Honda Civic all 2016 models.
Civic FOR THE WIN - you really get a lot more for your $ when you compare the 3 and you get the best MPG's
what about the jetta and golf or kia forte??
True I can agree with that. But if you know you would lose against a German car, don't say your car was "designed on the autobahn".
I just bought a 2018Mazda 3.
Even today its still a good looking car, good quality feeling, safety features is okay.
I live in Denmark where cars are very expensive so with a 5 year old Mazda 3 I get a drivers car for acceptable price.
Is the Lexus IS in this segment?
Do they still offer the coupe ?
+vuthina roeun That is next in line. The coupe should arrive Winter of 2015. Its coming.
I'm sorry but how fast do these car reviewers expect these basic compact cars to go
Nathan Sims this is true.
love your videos guys
So if u want to buy a 2019 vw Jetta I recommend the r line because u save ur money and have sporty looks and ventilation seats the best for ur money
Do Mazda’s still rust?
Corolla < Focus < 15 Civic < Mazda3 < 16 Civic.
icantw8 isn’t the transmission in the focus terrible?
do a 16' chevy cruze vs forte vs 16 mitsubishi lancer
