but that adds to the challenge (put down the pitchforks humorless redditors, this is a joke, not intended to be taken seriously, you can go back to expressing zero emotion now)
Three years later: Have put over 23,000 miles, 5 oil changes, on my smart and your video was helpful from the start, especially the long drain plug with screen. I change my oil every 5,000 mile and also update my smart maintenance schedules to show oil change. As far as oil changes go, this is probably the easiest change in the industry. Oil filter and drain plug are easy to access, as shown in video. Thank you for posting! P
5:05 Hi puppy! I love that you called it "the spiller". I've planning on purchasing a smart, and reviewing maintenance videos since they are so small. Thanks for these!
Just wow man, you ran your car without oil. How could you think that was a good idea? I'd love to see your next oil analysis and the lead in there from your bearings. You think all that noise was a sign? That would be metal on metal contact from having no hydrodynamic wedge of oil separating the moving parts!
Draining the oil pan doesn't remove 100% of the oil. When you pour oil from the bottle, does every trace of oil flow out and into the engine? No! Not even leaving it inverted for an hour would drain the oil out. Internal parts are still coated. Please read what I wrote in my reply to judge dredd below.
Yeah you're right about that, it's impossible to drain all the oil from the engine. You're right about many things in the video, however you will likely never admit to your one huge mistake. Draining the oil pan removes all the oil from the oil pickup which means you have zero oil pressure. Yes there is a film of oil on the parts in the engine, but you destroyed it as soon as you started the engine and the metal began to make contact. Why not share the video with your dealership and see what they think.
justin Miller The video is public. If my dealer wants to watch it, I don't care. I've changed my own oil this way for 40 years and never had a problem related to metal-on-metal wear or excessive oil consumption related to worn rings or scored cylinders. You don't give today's high-performance lubricants enough credit. Next you'll get on my case for only changing oil once a year after around 8 or 9,000 miles. Geez!
justin Miller Ha-ha! It's like I'm getting famous for this. I knew I'd catch flack from 'car mechanic Nazis' but I don't give a crap! I like the first comment about how I think it's wise to run the engine without oil... I never said it was wise. How many videos are there on UA-cam where people deliberately run a dry engine just to see it blow up. It always amazes me at how long they run. Thanks for sharing!
Thankyou ! I've just learnt how to change the oil etc on my smart fortwo and have just completed very proud of myself couldn't of done it without you ! Thankyou ....
You really don't need the ramps. The oil plug and filter are well within reach without even getting under the car. (Hence - no need to drive it off the ramps w/o oil as well.)
+n0nka Maybe for you, but I'm old and overweight and ramps just make it easier for me. Besides, if I didn't run the engine once a year, for 33 seconds without oil pressure, what would all my haters have to bitch about?
There’s a clip on the right side that lines up with the side panel you’re supposed to use to hold the carpet up. No bungee needed unless your clip is missing or broken.
Dear Ynonne Reilly, Please explain or provide some engineering data to support your unfounded response. Are you an engineer that can support your comment with empirical data? IF not than I find your comment rude. If yes, still rude and also bullying and would not expect from a professional. P
What a complete and utter imbecile... Like I said a little knowledge is dangerous if you took that engine apart after running it for 15 or 20 seconds with any oil in it like I have done you will see the immediate amount of damage you've done to the bearings it's called oil pressure for a reason it prevents metal to metal contact you imbecile
Great Danny, Number One ! do not worry about the negative comments, in fact you have traveled only one meter with the engine on, and then, I with a Dacia I walked for 20 days without oil and still work after two years (after replacing the oli, of course hahaha). i have already seen this video and it is good By 6 months i have a Smart Fortwo 451 model mhd, now i will change oil, oil filters, sparks and air filter by miself because DIY is normal on this car. Bye (Google Translator)
Hear all the rattling and knocking of the motor with no oil, and down the road some poor fellow gonna buy that car and he's gonna tell how well he kept maintenance up but not tell how he runs it with no oil in it, he'd rather over fill it and not under fill it but run it with no oil is ok.
The person who buys my old smart has bigger problems with the transmission. That's why I traded it in years ago. I've answered claims exactly like yours, years ago from other people. Most of the noise is from the hydraulic lifters and nothing more. The engine parts you are so certain are grinding together are all still protected by lubricants. Draining the oil pan doesn't leave metalic parts 100% free of oil. Every part is still coated with oil. I owned my smart for 11 years and changed the oil the same way each time. Tell me again how I'm shortening the life of the engine. The engine outlasted 2 starter motors, an exhaust system, an air circulation fan and a transmission.
It's a fun car to drive around. Enjoy it while you can. Mine is turning 11 years old this year and suddenly everything is breaking down all at once. The A/C stopped working a year ago, not the ABS stopped working, check engine light came on, brake light came on yesterday and the heater fan suddenly quit working in the middle of winter. My next car will hopefully be an Elio.
charles vereschagin I hear that. I consider myself lucky to be only 30 miles from my dealer, but I cringe at the thought of needing to go there. My friend had the smart dealer do his oil change and it cost $180!My next 'smart' video will be how to repair a broken tailgate latch. I needed to special order the part... FROM THE DEALERSHIP!!!
@@Denb7 180$?! I would love to pay that price. I went to Smart Certified Dealership and they charged me 500€ (that's 591$) for an oil change & filter. I cannot believe it. Next time im just going to follow your video
@@zanhaler01 If you start the engine before adding the oil, I don't recommend making a video of it then putting it on UA-cam unless you're looking to amass as many haters as possible. PS - My dealership charged me $1000+ to replace the muffler.
Thanks for making this video Denny. I am thinking about buying a used Smart this week, and I heard it is expensive to maintain. Your vid will likely save me hundreds of dollars. I also love that you work clean. It is a great habit. Great video. Thanks again. Dig the Halifax shirt btw. :-)
JoeyTai11 The worst thing to happen to my smart is the starter motor died. The car was under warranty otherwise it would have cost over $900! My smart isn't the smoothest ride on the road, but it's fun as hell to drive and I love cruising around town or zipping down the highway. BTW - I just made a new video showing how to fix a broken tailgate latch.
i just did my 61K mile oil change (5K on the first, 6K after). had the oil analyzed by Blackstone Labs for chemicals and metals (check for wear/leaks). my oil had 1/3 the copper of the average smart (copper is the bearing material in bronze/brass) and no coolant, water or fuel. good to know seeing that i've had the car 7-1/2 years and will drive it another 20 years :)
I've been changing my own oil since the early 70's and have never changed a gasket on a drain plug and have never had a leaky plug. The car only needs to be level to get a good reading on the dipstick. As long as the correct amount of oil is added, it doesn't matter. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you making this video but I have to admit I was kind of scared when I saw you start the motor without oil too. It would seem like you could get at the plug and filter without the ramps maybe? Hey everyone does what they want I am just wondering if you could skip the ramps all together? Best to you.
Silver Cymbal In my younger days, I'd agree with you, but at 59 years old I'm overweight and out of shape, so I like using the ramps. I think, in the back of my mind, I drove off the ramps just for the shock value. It has really gotten people's attention. Watch some of those UA-cam videos where people run engines with no oil pan or rocker covers until it seizes up. It's amazes me how long it takes to destroy an engine when people are deliberately trying to do it. Thanks for watching!
For my 2008 Fortwo Passion it's 3.7 quarts. Also, I notice you didn't add oil to the oil filter like many people do. It's also recommended by Mercedes that you wait a whole minute between adding quarts.
Yes, I could easily push my car off the ramps. And because of the slope of my driveway it would quickly roll directly across the street and into my neighbor's yard. What is your recommendation to prevent this from happening? As stated many times before, after draining the oil pan, there is a coating of oil lubricating all friction points of the engine. There is just no oil pressure while running it at an idle speed for those 33 seconds. Please advise which parts will be most affected by the lack of oil pressure during this process so I may keep an eye on them.
I have a 2006 smart car fortwo passion an all the videos I'm watching shows that the oil plug is big well I can't find it anywhere so idk if my car is different but I can't locate the oil plug someone help me please
personally i wouldnt run it with no oil but running it for a few seconds with no oil would`nt harm it since all the parts are still covered in the old oil and the sump does`nt completely empty
Never start the car without oil & never over fill your car with oil. There are several things that might happen if a significant amount of excess oil is added to your engine. Your engine relies on consistent oil pressure to keep the moving parts running smoothly. Changes in the oil pressure and overall lubrication of the engine can lead to: Engine damage such as bent rods in the engine or collapsed valve pipes. Catastrophic engine failure where the engine sustains enough damage that it cannot be repaired, but must instead be replaced. Excess engine wear from inconsistent oil pressure over time. Spark plug fouling, resulting in the need to replace spark plugs more frequently. Excess oil deposits in the catalytic converter.
Your 'no oil' remark has been discussed at length in other comments. The fact is that even after draining the oil pan, all engine parts susceptible to friction are still coated with oil. Operating the engine for 33 seconds at idle rpm, wasn't enough to remove that oil coating. So there was oil, just no oil pressure. Most affected parts might be hydraulic lifters, You hedged second concern by stating, "a significant amount of excess oil..." As you saw, the excess oil was marginal at worst. Perhaps enough to fill the empty oil filter that others have complained about. You failed in your list of potential engine damages because you didn't categorize them with respect to whether they would result from either operating without oil or with too much oil.
Holy crap man. I garentee if you cut open your oil filter, there will be metal in it. NEVER run a motor with no oil. You should NEVER even put an oil filter on dry, always fill the filter up with oil to minimize dry start time. also, change the filter first, so the dirty oil in the oil passages drain back to the pan, so you get more out when you drain the oil. and no, never over fill the oil. there's a reason for the air space in the cranckcase. too much oil, and it will blow out seals, and cause oil leaks. And before anyone says anything, im ASE certified, and been building engines/ transmissions since I was 13.
+MVP11489 Holy crap man. Do you think I really give a sh**? Are there not enough disclaimers to get through to you that I'm not really concerned about those 33 seconds with no oil pressure? How do you fill a filter that mounts sideways? I've had cars with side mounted filters. You want me to drain more oil out, but then freak out if I start the engine. Maybe the old oil I left in was just for that purpose. The extra dash of oil I put in was to compensate for the empty filter. I didn't top off the crankcase! Certified, schmertified... I don't care! Thanks for watching!
+Denb7 OMG, where to begin XD. First off, that rough tapping noise you are hearing are your soft babbit/ lead coated bearings slamming against a surface induction hardened steel crank journal. Do you know what oil even does? Do you know what oil pressure is even for? Obviously not. Oil PRESSURE keeps the parts floating over each other SO THEY DONT TOUCH, EVER. Ever pull apart a motor after running it 30 seconds without oil? Obviously not, because you'd know that the bearings are now scored up. Is this a problem? Nope. It will still run fine. Won't knock, won't really cause any issues. Only that you've greatly shortened the life of the motor. Why put 20-30k miles worth of wear on a motor, in a few seconds over pure laziness? I don't really care if you want to do it, but telling others to potentially ruin their car is a dick move. What if a guy with 200k miles on his car sees this shit, and ends up with a rod knock? I'm sure you won't give a shit. If you really believe you are not causing any sort of damage at all, then you have obviously never built a motor or know what's going on here. and telling other people to damage their cars is pretty messed up. If you want to ruin your own car, then by all means, go for it. but don't tell other people that its not causing any damage, when it clearly is. I know damn well that you have never put your theory to the test and taken a pan off after doing some retarded shit like that, or even cut open an oil filter after that, because if you have, that glittery puddle of metal ridden oil would have changed your mind quick. I've accidentally started motors without oil before, and found bits of metal in the oil pan from less run time then this. Hell, I once ran a straight 6 ford without oil down the highway (shitty fram filter case exploded), and it siezed on me. started right up the next day. did the motor knock, or sieze up from that? of course not. But there was a fuckton of metal in the pan. Uhh, what to do with sideways filters? Wow, how about fill the filter up most of the way, then get it close, then angle it in there quickly, the second you start to screw it on, the threads on the shaft will keep the oil from coming out of the hole as you screw it down, as the only place the oil can leak out of is the center hole. it certainly won't come out of the anti-drainback valve holes around it. The filter on my galant is like that. Really not hard to do without so much as a drip coming from it -_- man, you really have no clue XD I'm not saying all of this to flame you, or tell you to not do this. Its a free country, do what you want, how ever you want. But don't tell someone else to do something that could ruin their own car. Times are hard, cars are expensive.
+MVP11489 Well for someone who already knows far more than poor little old me, you certainly have an awful lot to say. As a mechanic I suppose you make money fixing cars. I would think you'd appreciate a video like this as it would certainly drum up more business for folks like yourself. Could that mysterious tapping sound possibly be coming the sound of hydraulic lifters operating without pressure? Be honest! This video is how I change my oil. I never tell people to do what I do. I have disclaimers in the description and within the video to warn people. If half the people who watch UA-cam videos did half the stupid things that other people have uploaded to UA-cam, then a quarter of the world's population should technically be dead by now. Tell me something... aside from the mortal sin of that particular 33 seconds during my video, was the rest of the video acceptable? Surely, oil does enter the filter even without pre-filling it, so I consider that point of your complaint to be moot. Assuming that starting the engine to circulate oil throughout the system, then rechecking the proper fill level would mitigate the issue of not filling the filter. Is there a considerable amount of damage done by not filling the filter, or is that just your particular SOP? I still can't understand why an ASE certified mechanic would be interested in watching a video of an old fat guy doing an oil change in his driveway? As a part time janitor, I know I have no interest in watching some other dofus dry mopping a floor or refilling a paper towel dispenser. So what attracted you to this video?
+Denb7 You answered my posts backwards, so it prolly would have made more sense the other way around but its not important I guess lol. Is it possible? maybe, most likely not. the lifters are sealed. they do not have a constant flow of oil going through them (unless they are bad). the oil passages only open once the valve closes completely, but they won't leak out since there's no air in the system for the oil to leak out of. The moment the cam engages the lifter, the oil passage closes. That noise is your rod bearings as a solid flat cam motor will make that same noise without oil. Even though I would not do it the way you did, there wasn't much wrong else with the video. Of course the engine would fill up the filter, but that's not really the point. the point is to minimize run time without oil. Of course, there will always be a second or 2 it will run without oil. That can't be helped, but 2 or 3 seconds, is no where near an issue as 30 straight seconds of no oil. My point wasn't to flame you, or bash you. My point was to inform you of the damage you are causing. These motors aren't known for lasting much past 100k miles. That's what happens in a 1 litre motor, pushing over 90hp with 11:1 CR. Most cars are making the same power with almost double the size of the engine, so its already pushed pretty hard for its size.
WARNING! This video contains scenes that may cause mechanics and car fanatics to experience heart attacks, insanity and a general sense of superiority. In response to the volume of criticisms received, I have added an annotation warning those sensitive to scenes of engine abuse to stop watching the video. Thanks for watching!
Denb7 UA-cam is the home of the anonymous critic, don't let them bother you. One thing I like to do is find a piece of ground with some angle to it and lean the car toward the drain plug. Nothing dramatic, 5-10 degrees. Seems to get more old oil out faster.
+Denb7 Let me give you a couple tips to be fair, Let all oil drain, you probably left 1/2- 1 qt behind, also let all the oil in the filter and then put it back in the box and then the bag so it doesnt leak out. and An adjustable wrench can strip the plug. Also never let a smart car 3cyl run without oil. It has very small parts that have 0 tolerance for that kind of running. Even cold starts have some oil to pump. Let the e brake up, neutral and let it roll. Use common sense sir. I may be young but I`ve never seen so much wrong in my life.
+Jason Kaplan Thanks for playing fair. The video is edited for expediency, the oil is drained and there is nothing close to a ½ qt left in the pan. Though it's off camera, the video does show me draining the filter before bagging it and I double bag as well, but not on camera. The adjustable wrench was not my 1st choice, but it became necessary because the drain plug is larger than my largest metric wrench. The drain plug is 10mm larger than the 15mm lug nuts that hold the wheels on. It may not be an ideal choice, but when used properly, the adjustable wrench is sufficient. Running without oil isn't recommended, but I do it and I don't care how other people feel, I had hoped the disclaimers plus my commentary would be enough to fend off critics, but apparently not. Why don't people make similar comments when someone makes a video of themselves deliberately destroying an engine by running it without oil? I have also discussed rolling off the ramps which, in my case, can't be safely done by me alone. Had I started the engine only long enough to begin rolling off the ramps (4 seconds) I'm certain that I would have aroused just as much ire as I do running it for 33 seconds. To be honest, I ran without oil just to get a reaction... and it seems to be working. I've defended my position on this to death, so I won't entertain it any longer here. This video is for entertainment purposes only, so people should just cool their jets. Thanks for your feedback!
On the right hand side of the carpet that's over the engine compartment there is a plastic clasp that will clip onto a hole in the right side of the car. You won't have to use bungee cord.
Thank you for your video. I recently purchased a 2013 Smart. I change the oil myself, because I was not sure on dealer maintenance.. I really appreciated the info on leaving the long oil plug/screen assembly in the pan to reduce oil spills as it made my job much easier and clean! cheers
Wanted to thank you again for posting the smart car oil change. I have now changed oil 3 times! I change at every 5k even though smart says it is a 10k interval. I drive hard and by doing this job myself, I am happy and save money vs having someone that calls themselves pros at and oil change shop. Note: Smart has a great downloadable maintenance schedule (10k/20k....etc). I have used these forms and added to my vehicle documentation history. Cheers, P
Hello, you have done almost everything right. But you must never start the engine without engine oil! Never start the engine without oil. It is also advisable to fill the oil filter with engine oil before unscrewing it. Greetings from Germany Klaus Max
i know your catching hell about running the car with no oil this i would never do but what i don't understand is why didn't you kill the motor after it came off the ramps u took the time to get out and move them and back up,, that's crazy I would have at least added two to three quarts of oil before i moved it
3 things....I didn't see him change the drain plug gasket, always fill your filter with oil before putting it on( will have a void if you don't) and....NEVER RUN YOUR ENGINE WITH NO OIL!!!!!!!
1) Been changing my own oil since 1973, never replaced a plug gasket and never had an oil leak. The point of a gasket is to prevent leaks. If I don't develop a leak, then the existing gasket was sufficient. 2) Please make a video showing me how to pre-fill a thimble-sized filter with long screw threads that is side mounted and install it without losing the oil. 3) I've answered the "no oil" complaint a million times. a) there is residual oil present b) the engine never goes above an idle c) it ran for 33 seconds d) all moving parts are coated with oil, just no oil pressure (same as starting a cold engine).
@@Dude10271 Doesn't matter, any void will be filled as soon as oil pump begins circulating oil, so as long as a small amount of oil (enough to fill the filter) is included when filling, what's the issue?
man, i never knew car guys were so dramatic. even if you don't agree with his decision to run the engine for a few seconds after draining the oil, y'all act like he told you it was okay to put mountain dew in your coolant reservoir. thanks for the video. i need to change my ol lady's oil and i was worried these little things would be more complicated than an average car. turns out it's easier than mine haha.
Jake Hagen Thanks for not being another car Nazi! Every time I see a new comment added to this video, I have to cringe a little before reading it. Finally, don't be silly, everybody knows that Mountain Dew works better as a brake fluid than a coolant.
Thank you for posting your video. Here in England Smart are sold and maintained by Mercedes Benz and the servicing can be very expensive. I am gathering the info and parts to service my wife's 2009 MHD convertible. There are no workshop books available in Europe for ordinary home mechanics and you guys in the USA seem to have strength to walk away from dealerships. Thanks again Paul Ipswich UK
Paul Billingham Thanks for commenting on my video. I catch a lot of flak for running the engine before topping off the oil, but I don't care. I avoid dealerships, not out of strength, but rather necessity. In the USA, smarts are sold and maintained by Mercedes dealerships as well. I'm lucky to be only 30 miles from a dealer, but some people are 300+ miles from their nearest dealer. An oil change alone is outrageously expensive. That,s why I do it myself.
Awesome video! Out of curiosity, I'm in the position to get an '08 Smart Fortwo at a fairly cheap price from a reputable dealer that has around 40,000 of well-maintained miles on it. How many miles do you have on your Smart and how many miles would you think I can expect from mine if I purchase it?
Sorry, but I cannot answer your question. Smart cars have been available in the United States since 2008, so unless it's imported, you won't find a smart in the US older than '08.
How many miles has the car done and how many oil changes have you done doing it that way? I would never do it that way personally because failure/damage can be instant with no oil but I'm curious.
+boooooobiesrgreat My car has 38,000+ miles on it and I've been doing this since it was new. I've stated over & over that there is still oil coating the parts after draining the pan, but people will believe what they want. While the car is on ramps, accessing the oil filler by reaching over the tailgate is a pain in the ass so I run the engine a few seconds with only that film of lubricant to protect it. I would just roll it forward, shut it down and fill it, but my driveway is just too short for that. I'm no mechanic and I don't recommend people do what I do, but I'm sure enjoying the mileage from the shock value built into this video. Thanks for watching!
@@Denb7 Why would you use High Milage oil in a vehicle with only 38k on it? Is that too compensate for the huge amount of wear from running it without oil??🤣
Draining the oil pan does not remove 100% of the oil from the engine. Even when drained, all engine parts are still coated with a film of oil. The cold engine ran at low RPM for 33 seconds with no oil pressure, but not without oil. Lack of oil pressure affected the hydraulic lifters (tapping sound) more than anything else. You can put two drops of oil into a sewing machine and it'll stay lubricated for years. Try draining the oil from any engine. Let it drain for several hours. Next run your finger around inside the oil filler onto the cams and push rods. Your finger will come out covered with oil! There's still a coating of oil covering all surfaces needing lubrication. With a cold engine and low RPMs for a short duration, no harm is done.
Pour the oil amount in, run the engine for 5 min. , Shut it down. Wait 15 min. for the oil to settle; check the oil level; Add oil if needed; run the engine again; check the oil level, then that's it.
Very true! Even if the car was tilted to the right, there would still be trace amounts of oil in it. One of the beneficial properties of lubricating oil is its ability to maintain a film on metallic parts. I didn't change all of the oil, but I did replace a major percentage of it.
I have been an engineer for 30 years now. I will only say that. what you did is unacceptable, unacceptable. you have definitely caused damage to your engine. You could put two liters of oil and then lower it. What you are showing is criminal.
Wow, Your Highness, you jumped from "unacceptable" to "criminal" mighty fast. I would never suggest that responses to my videos go from annoying to moronic as quickly as you have judged me. After 11 years of changing my oil in this manner, my smart never burned oil. Maybe you can use your engineering skills to calculate the amount of excess engine wear that has been caused by my annual 33 seconds of engine operation at idle speeds without pressurized oil circulation. Remember that all parts are coated with lubricant throughout those 33 seconds. Why don't you take a moment and read the video description. Especially the part that says: "This video shows how I change MY oil on MY car. It is intended for entertainment purposes only and should NOT be considered an educational video." I believe that I have a right to destroy my own car if I want, so where you arrive at "criminal" is a mystery. I hope you were entertained!
I'm not sure I would go so far as to say that it was criminal but he absolutely undeniably unequivocally damaged that engine complete and utter ignorance
Good day Sir. Very good video I am about to buy a smart and your oil change video has reassured me that I will be able to change the oil myself. I have to say the some of the rude comments about your running the engine with out oil are not needed. I do agree that the engine should not be run with out oil but I would not be rude about it. I wonder if you put a block or chock at the bottom of your ramps could you roll the car down or maybe have and assistant sit in the car to apply the brakes as needed. I like the way you marked the oil container to get quantity of oil. I actually do something similar . I have a large jug which is almost clear. Marked on the side of that jug are 2 or 3 marks which correspond to my motor bike van and car. I pour oil from the original container into the jug and then into the vehicle. This means when a container is not full I can use oil from 2 different containers and still have an easy way to measure it. I was a little concerned that having the car on ramps may leave old oil pooled in the sump but as the sump plug it towards the from of the car that will not be a problem. thanks for this fine video . FDO
I'm not sure why he runs the engine when he does... I've heard of some who run the engine briefly WHILE DRAINING to remove ALL the old oil from the case for a real empty case. But he does it just to move the car AFTER he's finished draining it. Seems easy enough to me to add the oil while the car is on the ramps - our Smarty engine block is kind of at waist level then. Though, maybe it makes for bad filming. ;-) Anyhow, the guy seems like he's been doing this awhile so all the heckling may be unfounded. I personally love the vacuum job at the end - so professional!! :D [OOPS!! This is Daniel's wife posting here...] Sorry, Honey!! :D
While draining or after draining, what's the difference? There's still oil coating every part! I'd add the oil while it's on the ramps if there was no tailgate to contend with. On the ground, it's not an issue, but just try reaching over it while the car is on top of steep ramps! People suggest pushing off the ramps, but they don't understand my situation. It's tough to push the car and be on the brake at the same time. My car would end up in my neighbor's yard or at least in the middle of the street.
I think the starting "while draining" might move whatever oil is somehow held in the case to move and free itself for draining. It seems to me that oil change places ask for a quick start during the draining and I always figured that was their intention - to get parts moving a sec to push any remaining oil out. It makes sense to me that there might be oil that is pushed with a bit of a run to exit the case. But, yes, for such a short run, there is some oil and it doesn't seem like enough heating and friction would be generated to cause any real damage. And, for sure, you can't brake and push off the ramps at the same time!! :D (Still Dan's wife replying here...)
excellent video, I do appreciate the effort you put in it. i did help me a lot since the drain plug was so tight on my smart that at some point i thought it was counter treated, you video helped me confirm it just unscrew the universal way. What do you think is the best wrench for it a 24 mm or a 15/16? thanks
So if you are old and overwieght so you cant give it oil while on the ramps, why dont you just roll it of the ramps, without starting the engine, and then fill oil in the car and then back up to a level ground
Level ground is the problem. As you can see, my driveway is very short and has a slight incline. My ramps have a depressed area to prevent the car from rolling off on its own. Therefore I'd need to release the handbrake, put the transmission in neutral and push the car off the ramps. As I am alone, if i push from behind, I would have no way of preventing the car from rolling into and across the street.
I pretty sure the car will roll off as the front wheels are on the incline part of the driveway. If you back it up, pull the handbrake, car i neutrual, you could roll it off. I had a smart as well, they roll quite easy. I wont bust you engine, but i high compression diesel engine wears off the film pretty quick, so you greatly accelerates the wear on the engine. See this: But hey, you made a pretty basic video, and got 101 million views. I bet you havent seen that comming ;)
I knew I'd catch flack over that particular 33 seconds of this video. In the description, I added a link that shows a guy drain the oil and drive a car with 250,000+ miles on it at high RPMs until it blows up. My car ran at idle rpm for 33 seconds. I'm not concerned about excessive wear as the amount of time it operated without pressurized lubrication (there was residual oil on the bearings, etc.) was negligible. BTW - It's only 101 thousand views, but I hadn't seen that coming either.
Thanks for the video. These car nannies need to get a life. Running your engine for a few seconds while you come down from a ramp isn't going to do a bit of damage. I for one appreciate you taking the time to film the video for folks who don't want to pay the Smart dealer $300 for the service every 10,000 miles.
Oh man.. I don't know why I watched this but I got to see a car drive with no oil do that's cool. When I cracked the oil pan on my vr6 the dealer asked how long it had ran with no oil and I had turned it off before the oil drained out. They said I saved the engine... even 10 seconds could be long enough to toast it. Anyways, please don't tell people to drive their cars with no oil lol thats just cruel.
+hugeslacker I'll dispute the idea that there's NO oil in the engine. There's oil on all the parts, just no oil pressure. You must be completely blind if you missed the multiple disclaimers on this video, warning people to 'not do what I do' and the fact that this video is for entertainment purposes only. Apparently a smart engine is hardier than a VR6 considering that I do this every time I change my oil and it's still running just fine.
dave averesch Come on! It's coated in Mobil 1. All you need is a couple drops of Mobil 1! I knew I'd get trashed for that 33 seconds of video. It is worth it just to hear the motorheads complain. One of my earlier videos has over 8600 views and most of the viewers took the time to trash me in the comments. Like McDonald's says, "I'm lovin' it!"
Draining the oil pan does not remove all oil from the engine. All engine parts are still coated with oil even after draining the pan. The engine was started with no oil pressure, which is far different than what you say. The engine ran at low rpm for only 33 seconds. I likely did more engine damage starting my 66 Chevy in -20 degree weather in North Dakota than I did here.
I predicted this! Relax there's enough oil coating the parts, so get over it. Back in '92 I drove a Plymouth Voyager van. I was in the process of trading it in for a new car when the oil pump blew out. I called the dealership about driving with 0 PSI oil pressure. They said don't worry as it wouldn't affect the trade. I drove 13 miles to work and back for two and a half days and nothing happened. Driving off the ramps won't kill the car.
Denb7 Dear Denb7, that was true for old cars. Modern engines have smallest tolerances than in the past and a faulty lubrication is destructive even for few seconds (more than 30 in your case). In this case, you could put some oil in the engine (3/4 of quantity indicated by constructor), remove the car from the ramps and after some minutes check for the level, adding the right oil quantity. Another trick is do the oil drain with hot engine, that helps the operation. Anyway, great job, good video.Sorry for grammatical errors (I'm italian)
S.D. Riprese Aeree Long story short, I'd prefer not reaching into the engine compartment while the car is up on ramps. It's my car and I'll do what I want with it. The lesson I've learned is to promote my videos as "How I Do It" and NOT as if it is a "How To..." video. If I say, this is how I do it... nobody can bitch about what I do. Thanks for watching! Remember: "Don't do as I do!"
Hello S.D. Riprese Aeree, You make some fine points and Denb7 can improve by adding oil before letting the vehicle off the ramps. Point is: No damage to engine as there was no load and all bearings had film. AS for tolerance: it has not changed on bearing surfaces from model-T to Ferrari. Must have oil film. If not, you hear the sound...aka rod-knock. So many people complain this video for noise that is just the hydraulic lifters. Mr. P
+Daniel Lewis No worries Dan, I wouldn't change your oil if you asked me to and I won't walk your dog either. You don't own my car, so don't tell me what I can or can't do with it. Thanks for watchin'
How on earth do you know how tight my drain plug is. Are you psychic? Do you have torque-vision? Then again, if that's your biggest gripe, I suppose I should be happy!
ok advice from a master mechanic 1 never ever ever run an engine without oil 2 use a measuring jug or the like as the bottles can be wrong 3 chock the front wheels 4 dont let this guy near your car , at least it easy to service while under the vehicle check for leaks
1) Congratulations! You're the 10,000th master mechanic to give me this advice. 2) After 11 years, the measurements on the containers have worked just fine. 3) Unless I'm standing in front of the car, I don't care if it rolled off the ramps. 4) I have no desire to work on anyone else's car.
+danny lewis If you like good "smilage," check out: www.eliomotors.com/ for a real head turner that's half the cost of a smart. Made in USA, 84MPH, $6800 new... .
Hi Denny, Thanks Very Much for the Very Excellent Video, it makes the Oil Change Super Safe, and Easy! PS we know that the very short momentarily - no oil engine running, is detrimentally inconsequential, and is most certainly the best activity for the ease and simplicity of the change!
I know you don't want people to criticize, but you will tell the person that buys that car from you that it has been started one or more times without oil in it, right? Otherwise that's pretty messed up, man...
I read it, thats what i do for a living run a oil change business, your the one damaging your car not me, im just a humble observer if you don't like criticism, disable your comments.
Thanks! As I stated, I love hearing from idiots, so I knew you'd reply. In your initial 'comment' you never mentioned your field of expertise or the basis of your insight. You should actually be thanking me for giving people a reason to have their oil changes done by professionals. You could have used my video to promote your business, but instead you opted to attack me personally. Keep responding... I love hearing from idiots!
Dear sir, you have made a few beginner mistakes. 1. you drained the old oil and did not open the filler cap. 2. you returned the plug and only then changed the oil filter ?! 3. Start the engine of a car without oil ?!
He purchased a Smart for Two so how smart can he be? "Sounds like it needs oil." No shit. Why didn't he just release the parking brake, put the transmission in neutral and let gravity do the rest? Wouldn't let him anywhere near my Camry.
Ojo Felix NM The ramps have stops at the top forward edges, so I would have had to push it over the stops. I couldn't have done that by myself and have been able to control the car from inside at the same time. I could have run the engine only long enough to get over the stops then rolled down, but my driveway is really short and I didn't want to be so close to the road. The engine ran with low oil (NOT no oil) for all of 33 seconds, so what! You are free to do whatever you want to your Camry and I can do whatever I want to my car.
Tarbet Balfour I got my 1st lawn mower off the side of a road. The engine was seized solid. I pounded the piston out with a wood block and mallet. The cylinder was terribly gouged. I used a file and sandpaper to grind the rough spots down. I threw it back together and ran it for many years. It burned oil (I used used oil in it) bit ran with no other problems. Thirty-three seconds with no oil pressure isn't going to hurt the engine.
Never ever start any engine with no oil people
Scott pearce oh yes that's so true
h
Right! Holly Crud!
Was wondering why it sounded so bax
but that adds to the challenge (put down the pitchforks humorless redditors, this is a joke, not intended to be taken seriously, you can go back to expressing zero emotion now)
I mean, the noise that poor engine was making says it all...
That's the sound of hydraulic valve lifters operating with no oil pressure. It's not the sound of parts wearing or grinding.
Three years later:
Have put over 23,000 miles, 5 oil changes, on my smart and your video was helpful from the start, especially the long drain plug with screen.
I change my oil every 5,000 mile and also update my smart maintenance schedules to show oil change.
As far as oil changes go, this is probably the easiest change in the industry. Oil filter and drain plug are easy to access, as shown in video.
Thank you for posting!

Geez!
www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/3592919/1
justin Miller Ha-ha!
+julie jaques Congrats! You just saved a bunch of money! Last I heard a smart dealership charges $180 for an oil change.
I repeat never start any engine without oil!
You ran the car without oil?! THATS IDIOTIC!
Dear Ynonne Reilly,
Please explain or provide some engineering data to support your unfounded response.
Are you an engineer that can support your comment with empirical data?
IF not than I find your comment rude. If yes, still rude and also bullying and would not expect from a professional.
P
you are an idiot of enormous proportions
What a complete and utter imbecile... Like I said a little knowledge is dangerous if you took that engine apart after running it for 15 or 20 seconds with any oil in it like I have done you will see the immediate amount of damage you've done to the bearings it's called oil pressure for a reason it prevents metal to metal contact you imbecile
Great Danny, Number One ! do not worry about the negative comments, in fact you have traveled only one meter with the engine on, and then, I with a Dacia I walked for 20 days without oil and still work after two years (after replacing the oli, of course hahaha).
i have already seen this video and it is good
By 6 months i have a Smart Fortwo 451 model mhd, now i will change oil, oil filters, sparks and air filter by miself because DIY is normal on this car.
Sir I enjoyed watching you change the oil in your little smart car I am now a owner of a little red smart car
Thank you for taking the time to produce and post this video. The information is very helpful. My nearest dealer is 120 mile away.
charles vereschagin I hear that.
Bravo très bien fait ton tuto 3litre 5 j ai mis 😉
Merci
Men that drane plug is impossible to untight! Did you warm up the car in order to loos it?
15/16 wrench fits oil plug.
Thanks. If I had a wrench that size I would have used it.
Make sure to clean up around the oil fill before you run it with out oil.
Pure awesome. Carazyyy. Thanks for posting this keep em coming. cheers.
No new seal ring on the oil drain plug? The car also needs to be level.
Denb7 You are too funny! Best to you my friend, and God bless.
Thank you so much!!! It’s so hard to find smart car videos!
For my 2008 Fortwo Passion it's 3.7 quarts. Also, I notice you didn't add oil to the oil filter like many people do. It's also recommended by Mercedes that you wait a whole minute between adding quarts.
You know why it’s only trickling out? It’s because you have the back of the car to high, most of the oil is resting towards the front of the oil pan
I push mine back when I pull to far ahead at the gas station positive you can roll it down the ramp with out starting it.
Good afternoon, can you tell me the size of the keys you used to remove the engine oil?
I have a 2006 smart car fortwo passion an all the videos I'm watching shows that the oil plug is big well I can't find it anywhere so idk if my car is different but I can't locate the oil plug someone help me please
Some oldeer smarts don't have drain plugs like the diesel. You need a vacum pump to suck it out
personally i wouldnt run it with no oil but running it for a few seconds with no oil would`nt harm it since all the parts are still covered in the old oil and the sump does`nt completely empty
I'd be wealthy iI had a dollar for every time I explained that to my critics.
should do a video of taking the oil pan off and replacing it would help me out a lot cause my engine has no oil left since I hit the oil pan
Sorry. My smart fortwo is now a thing of my past. If you are destined to fix yours anyway, just video the process and upload it yourself.
@@Denb7 dang would of really helped me out guess I should spend the $300 to get it taken off and replaced by a professional
@@cooltraner567 Ha! You got off cheap. I let a smart dealership change my muffler. It cost me $1000.00.
Never start the car without oil & never over fill your car with oil. There are several things that might happen if a significant amount of
excess oil is added to your engine. Your engine relies on consistent
oil pressure to keep the moving parts running smoothly. Changes in the
oil pressure and overall lubrication of the engine can lead to:
Engine damage such as bent rods in the engine or collapsed valve pipes.
Most affected parts might be hydraulic lifters,
You hedged second concern by stating, "a significant amount of excess oil..." As you saw, the excess oil was marginal at worst.
Really not hard to do without so much as a drip coming from it -_- man, you really have no clue XD
I'm not saying all of this to flame you, or tell you to not do this.
+Jason Kaplan I agree 100 percent with every thing you said here, i wonder if he still has this car and if he has had any engine trouble. lol
+nemrac fiftyto Just changed the oil again a month ago and... yes it's still running just fine with no engine trouble.
Cheers,
P
Look at you put it in front without oil, idiots where are you, what dwarf can I say ??
You are a superstar my friend!! Thanks and kind regards from Spain!!
Hello, you have done almost everything right.
But you must never start the engine without engine oil! Never start the engine without oil.
It is also advisable to fill the oil filter with engine oil before unscrewing it.
Greetings from Germany
Klaus Max
i know your catching hell about running the car with no oil this i would never do but what i don't understand is why didn't you kill the motor after it came off the ramps u took the time to get out and move them and back up,, that's crazy I would have at least added two to three quarts of oil before i moved it
Hi, im thinking about buying a smart car, I wondering if its worth buying and would it be a good first car?
At 17:14 your filter is vertical not side mounted.Just like my sister in laws car. No oil spilled when I did it.
@@Dude10271 Doesn't matter, any void will be filled as soon as oil pump begins circulating oil, so as long as a small amount of oil (enough to fill the filter) is included when filling, what's the issue?
I loved your video and your commentating. Lets have more. From a smart owner fan in the UK.
What is a quart FGS .?
A unit of liquid measure.
"My dog is trying to help me with this" :) Nice video!
man, i never knew car guys were so dramatic. even if you don't agree with his decision to run the engine for a few seconds after draining the oil, y'all act like he told you it was okay to put mountain dew in your coolant reservoir.
thanks for the video. i need to change my ol lady's oil and i was worried these little things would be more complicated than an average car. turns out it's easier than mine haha.
Jake Hagen Thanks for not being another car Nazi! Every time I see a new comment added to this video, I have to cringe a little before reading it.
Finally, don't be silly, everybody knows that Mountain Dew works better as a brake fluid than a coolant.
Haha I got your back. I'm not a "by the book" kind of guy, either.
Thanks for this informative video!
unless thats sarcasm your even dumber than guy in the video
Thank you for posting your video. Here in England Smart are sold and maintained by Mercedes Benz and the servicing can be very expensive. I am gathering the info and parts to service my wife's 2009 MHD convertible. There are no workshop books available in Europe for ordinary home mechanics and you guys in the USA seem to have strength to walk away from dealerships.
Thanks again
Paul
Ipswich UK
Paul Billingham Thanks for commenting on my video. I catch a lot of flak for running the engine before topping off the oil, but I don't care. I avoid dealerships, not out of strength, but rather necessity. In the USA, smarts are sold and maintained by Mercedes dealerships as well. I'm lucky to be only 30 miles from a dealer, but some people are 300+ miles from their nearest dealer. An oil change alone is outrageously expensive. That,s why I do it myself.
I was going to admonish starting an engine with an empty oil filtre but you blew that right the Hell out of the water.
Mike
yes i thought the same when he put a drynoil filter on with dirty oil round the seal
Thanks so much for this!! It was very informative and well taught (:
Awesome video! Out of curiosity, I'm in the position to get an '08 Smart Fortwo at a fairly cheap price from a reputable dealer that has around 40,000 of well-maintained miles on it. How many miles do you have on your Smart and how many miles would you think I can expect from mine if I purchase it?
Is it exactly the same for the Smart ForTwo model 1999?
Sorry, but I cannot answer your question. Smart cars have been available in the United States since 2008, so unless it's imported, you won't find a smart in the US older than '08.
Oil it for turbo?
+Denb7 cheers for the reply
@@Denb7 Why would you use High Milage oil in a vehicle with only 38k on it?
Is that too compensate for the huge amount of wear from running it without oil??🤣
Why you start the Engine without oil?
With a cold engine and low RPMs for a short duration, no harm is done.
to destroy the bearings lol
@@Denb7 good luck,i wont let you near any motor of mine
Thanks for the video it answer some of the questions I had on my smart car now let's hope I can fix it lol
Pour the oil amount in, run the engine for 5 min. , Shut it down. Wait 15 min. for the oil to settle; check the oil level; Add oil if needed; run the engine again; check the oil level, then that's it.
All the oil would not have drained because of the angle of the car being on a ramp.
It is intended for entertainment purposes only and should NOT be considered an educational video."
I believe that I have a right to destroy my own car if I want, so where you arrive at "criminal" is a mystery.
I hope you were entertained!
I'm not sure I would go so far as to say that it was criminal but he absolutely undeniably unequivocally damaged that engine complete and utter ignorance
@@Denb7 One thing is for sure, you don't know what you're doing, that's why you have the incalculable....
Though, maybe it makes for bad filming. ;-)
Anyhow, the guy seems like he's been doing this awhile so all the heckling may be unfounded. I personally love the vacuum job at the end - so professional!! :D
[OOPS!!
(Still Dan's wife replying here...)
Amazing video thank you so much.
Motor CDI ??
Thank you, a great video that should help me a lot. Many thanks
excellent video, I do appreciate the effort you put in it. i did help me a lot since the drain plug was so tight on my smart that at some point i thought it was counter treated, you video helped me confirm it just unscrew the universal way.
See this:
But hey, you made a pretty basic video, and got 101 million views.
Why not get a ladder and fill it while on the ramps fat ass?
Is this the diesel or gas? It sounded like a diesel engine
It's gasoline. Perhaps you are referring to the sound of the engine with no oil pressure as it came off the ramps.
I'm thinking of getting a used diesel smart cause it gets double mpg of what a gas gets but scared of the maintenance costs.
Did you say 300 bucks for oil change, wow what else are doing for that kind of money?
nemrac fiftyto $300! Wow. What convinced me to do my own oil changes was a friend with a smart who told me he paid $180 at our dealer in Hartford, CT.
Don't bother how do oil change the wrong way.
What year is your Smart Car???
I mention that it's a 2008 in the first 5 seconds of the video.
I agree. don't drive your car w/o oil
Your engine failure has a different story...YES? Please tell me/us. I would like to know what really happened.
P
Just as long as they don't use that geo metro engine. I had my share of working on them
+danny lewis Geo engine was for prototype. Elio has an all new engine from the ground up.
11:30 huh sounds like it need oil you think? Lol
dave averesch Come on!
You should have wore glows before opening the oil bullon
WHAT A CLEAN ENGINE...... the car looks clean though 🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑
many thanks for this video - great description
Hey bud can you change my x wifes oil?
Did this man just start the engine with no oil😭😭😭
Draining the oil pan does not remove all oil from the engine. All engine parts are still coated with oil even after draining the pan. The engine was started with no oil pressure, which is far different than what you say. The engine ran at low rpm for only 33 seconds. I likely did more engine damage starting my 66 Chevy in -20 degree weather in North Dakota than I did here.
@@Denb7 Es dürften allerdings auch gewisse Unterschiede zwischen einer uralten Amikiste und einem Mercedes Qualitätsprodukt bestehen.
i cant believe he started the car without oil, the engine sounded all fucked up when he turn that shit back on and took off
Perhaps, you have an ear wax buildup or some other hearing issue because that's what smart cars sound like.
no oil wtf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Denb7 i have never seen any thing like that but its your car
Hello S.D. Riprese Aeree,
You make some fine points and Denb7 can improve by adding oil before letting the vehicle off the ramps.
Mr. P
and in next weeks upload, my car is somehow knocking, hhhmmm
Ha-ha-ha! Oh my goodness! You sure gave me a zinger! WOW!
Your not changing my oil. Don't ever start that with out oil again
+Daniel Lewis No worries Dan, I wouldn't change your oil if you asked me to and I won't walk your dog either. You don't own my car, so don't tell me what I can or can't do with it.
Thanks for watchin'
Cant wait too see your car getting an engine when a rod comes through the block
Yes hopefully goes through soon
Thanks man , clean job
He didn't tighten that drain enough
Good oil change Peter from England
Putting all torment aside , I've been looking at buying one next summer. Hopefully gas price will still be low so I can get one at a decent price
+danny lewis If you like good "smilage," check out: www.eliomotors.com/ for a real head turner that's half the cost of a smart. Made in USA, 84MPH, $6800 new... .
I bought one. Had it for 15 months now
Obrigado, muito obrigado. Você foi muito gentil ao gravar o vídeo. Você foi bastante claro e didático. Fico agradecido por sua iniciativa.
Don't agree so much with the no oil part but he did give fair warning. I worked in a shop and couldn't stand what he did. But it was helpful
I know you don't want people to criticize, but you will tell the person that buys that car from you that it has been started one or more times without oil in it, right? Otherwise that's pretty messed up, man...
+Czech I'll show them the video.
+Denb7 Ok cool, I was just curious. Good on you if you do.
Really helpful, good job, lots of thanks
Thank you, your video was so helpful
very nice video thanks.
Dear sir, you have made a few beginner mistakes. 1. you drained the old oil and did not open the filler cap. 2. you returned the plug and only then changed the oil filter ?! 3. Start the engine of a car without oil ?!
"I'd rather over fill than under fill"
Yeah, we would hate to be a few ounces too low!
Had a "mechanic" put in a litre too many in a little car I used to have. It leaked from then on.
Denb7 I've been doing just that for sixty some years and never started up any vehicle without oil.Definitely a nut on both ends of the wrench.
Ojo Felix NM YES a NUT on both ends of the Wrench LOL LOL. More worried about his gloves than the engine damage running with no oil
Ojo Felix NM You should try it some time... it's so radical... it's like living life on the edge.
Thirty-three seconds with no oil pressure isn't going to hurt the engine.
everything cristal clear!! very nice video. thanks.
I dont see why everyone is up in arms for having the car on for like 3 minutes with no oil, its not like he dry starts it every day or something
3 minutes! My car ran for 33 seconds at an idle.
