To elaborate on the legal issue: We have a law here in Germany which governs war material (Kriegswaffenkontrollgesetz aka weapons of war control law). It governs tanks, warships, missiles, bombs etc. but also military small arms like rifles and machine guns. By default, every semi-auto rifle is considered a weapon of war, unless it is dedicated to a civilian use (hunting or sporting use). Even factory semi-autos exclusively developed for police use would still fall under this (e.g. the PSG1). Labeling this an HK416, even as a factory semi-auto (as it is ordered by some police units which don't issue full autos), would make it fall under this law and result in massive restrictions on manufacturing (not an issue for H&K, as they have the necessary licenses), transport (even shipping within Germany is restricted), sale and export. The domestic civilian version of the HK416 is called the MR223 (allegedly MR stands for Match Rifle). That is a variant dedicated to the civilian market and therefore not governed by the Kriegswaffenkontrollgesetz. The idea of the law (restricting war material) might be fine. But the way it is implemented for dual use goods like semi auto rifles is extremely stupid. Two items which are physically identical (e.g. an M16 bolt and an AR-15 bolt) can be either simple firearms parts (still restricted in who can purchase them here, but in the sense of how firearms themselves are) or war material (bolts and barrels of machine guns, rifles and SMGs that fall under the law are themselves also restricted by the law). The only difference being the designation that the original manufacturer prescribed to them (once something is a weapon of war or a barrel/bolt for one, it can never not be one, similar to a machine gun receiver in the US).
Fun fact: MR223A3s are like 2.4k here in Europe, tax and all included. An LMT costs like 4+k, DDM4s like 2.8k. So HKs over here are much more reasonable priced.

[Machinist here] having machined alloys up to 20% chrome I can kinda speak about what the difference between 1%, 3% and chrome lining means. The big difference you will get going from 1 to 3% chrome in alloy is machinability. Chrome is not introduced for corrosion resistance but wear resistance. I machine for a lot of USACE marine use (prop shafts, rudder parts, bearings and all sorts of ship parts) if we need corrosion resistance we use nickel alloys (stainless) and chrome alloys for wear parts (pins, bushings, etc.) Chrome alloys are harder to machine because it is harder to get effective cuts in the material. It is hard to explain to anyone without the experience but you can see how the chrome alloys would resist the wear of say thousands of rounds fired through it. The higher cost of manufacturing from 1% to 3% is there and makes chrome lining appealing when you do not need to hold the tolerances associated with a "match rifle". Another issue with chrome lining is once it starts to fail it is done. Takes awhile but it is not bomb proof. If I have parts with chrome lining I bury tools in material and get underneath l, comes right out. The chrome alloy isn't necessarily harder material but just resist the wear action. I may comment layer with specs but I am not near any of my handbooks and spec books for material and machining specs. So basically chrome lining is cheaper and great for less tolerance demands of service rifle, chrome alloys more expensive but have wear resistance and tighter tolerances. Also E.U. is in process of banning chrome lining. Environmental reasons, gotta make greta happy *I am not a metallurgist, I am a machinist with experience with different alloy types*
Great practical explanation. From an engineering design standpoint, chrome is a very hard material which is why it resists wear very well, but this hardness comes with expected increase in brittleness - this is why once a chrome lining starts to go it's game over. Chrome lining effectively acts like a case hardening layer without the risk of material warpage that would come with actually case hardening such a relatively thin piece of steel, though as OP stated this results in the loss of final tolerance that would be expected from any deposited layer finish. High-chrome alloyed steel is effectively a middle ground, offering the improved wear resistance from the added chrome while holding better overall tolerances as there is no deposit layer, at an acceptable increase in cost from the more difficult machining process. You also won't see the steep drop-off point in wear resistance that you get with a failing chrome lining, as while the peak resistance isn't as good, the chrome is distributed throughout the steel so it will provide decent wear resistance throughout the life of the barrel as a whole.
I hear ya, but honestly chrome lined barrels are just as accurate as stainless steel barrels “practically speaking” these days. I shoot sub moa out of my Daniel defense block 2 upper with 77 grain and I’ve had a few times 62 grain green tip PMC even produce 1 moa 5 shot groups before. I refuse to call it 1moa gun with 62 as I think that was a few flukes. But geissele makes sub minute chrome barrels, even FN is making sub minute SCAR 20 barrels these days. If ur shooting 556 or even 308/6.5 and its producing 1moa or better how much better does it need to be for practical purposes. At 600 yards the barrel (not the person) is capable of taking head shots, at 1000 yards the barrel is still taking chest shots. If the military is getting chrome lined barrels why can’t we if we spend 5k on a rifle. They are piling a colt on us and it’s lame AF
I own a MR223A3 16" and have it configured as an SPR. Love it and can't wait to get my hands on a MR223A5 11" upper. As much as i don't like piston AR-10ish rifles i love AR-15ish piston guns. And HK barrels are incredibly accurate.
This has more or less been the HK 'tax' for as long as I've been into firearms. They generally make a really good firearm...but nothing that ever justifies the 30-100% HK tax that appears on their firearms.
Also, getting multiple uppers should be a priority for AR owners. Get redundancy through multiple uppers that can be tuned for anything you want. Blowing so much on one setup typically makes no sense; especially like everyone is saying you can source a top-end DI AR for under $2,000 and look at something like a POF rifle for a refined piston setup.
My buddy is working for HK on these rifles development. He said they get 15k+ rounds before any issues begin with accuracy degradation. They're obviously not some invincible material that you can full auto dump thousands of rounds through without issues. Its a beast thats gonna last a longer period of time between needing barrel replacement.
I hear that being thrown around a lot, but not a lot of people actually tested it... i'm happy to test it. This sample we have will be shot a crap load, so we'll make sure to let the barrel "marinate" for a few thousand.
@@9HoleReviews I thought only the very first run of the mr556 had the short lifespan barrels, and the alloy was changed up for later runs. Isn't some of that coloring the talking points of the usual suspects?
@Bulking_Smeagol this is from the one sample that battlefield last Vegas had. Those are constant full auto spurts. Think of how impressive that is for barrel not intended for trash ammo on full auto
As a retired Marine grunt rifleman, chrome line is great to have but maintenance is the key to any weapon system. 800 yards with 5.56 it’s pretty good. I have multiple systems in both 5.56& 7.62. I can always leave a thumbs up on 9-hole videos prior to the intro completing because you always know you’re going to get a top notch video that’s always entertaining and informative. It’s the least we can do for them.
We are a direct HK dealer and I nabbed the first one that came in a few weeks ago. Set it up with a TA55, my socom mini II, a surefire turbo, a larue/harris bipod, and some misc stuff like a lunar concepts hot pocket and bubba tab… oh this thing slaps. It has fantastic accuracy which has already been shown. It’s far handier than my A1. The manual of arms has many great quality of life improvements. With the socom mini on the suppressed setting it’s very gentle on the recoil impulse. The year I held my money back waiting for the A4 was well worth the wait. I can’t wait to hit some carbine courses with it.
Can I just say how impressed I am with modern firearms shooting an intermediate cartridge being able to shoot accurately at ranges sniper rifles from a few decades ago would struggle with
I've done the same thing on gas regulators, adding a vented screw to fine tune them, but I had the screw go from the inside out so gas pressure helps keep it from backing out, and if it did somehow completely come out, it would not fly away. I do use a countersunk screw, torx so its less likely to get stripped. I do appreciate manufactures giving us the ability to fine tune it, so its good they figured out how to prevent it from coming apart.
Great review as usual. I, like Henry, am an HK Kool-Aid drinker. I freely admit that. I have a representative of just about everything they make, from roller-guns to handguns. I carry HK handguns every day for both work and off-time, my work rifles are HK's as well. My decisions are based on quality and reliability. Unlike some manufactures, I've never known HK to put a product to market that is not a 110% vetted, and that doesn't function as designed every time. In 30 years of carrying firearms professionally, as well as training and instructing, I have been exposed to a large enough representative sample of various manufactures' firearms to recognize when we are used as Beta Testers. Anyway, that is an entirely different discussion. Ok, all that aside regarding chrome lining. I think first, we need to go back in time to see why chrome lining was first introduced into military rifles. As Henry kind of talked about, it had to do with material quality. Specifically in the AR pattern rifle is had to do with ammo quality. The initial version of the AR15 rifle did not have it, and it passed trials, it wasn't until ammunition quality was "changed" from what all the state-side testing used, that chrome lining was added. Also, we can't overlook the climate issues of SE Asia also... Also, as pointed out, these rifles are not intended to run full auto in a sustained fire situation. HK does manufacture and sell machine guns to Mil/Gov. The 416 (machine gun) is manufactured to be run suppressed and full auto. I by no means am a metallurgist, but I believe their track record regarding barrel steel supports the information HK USA shared with you guys. HK has a long history of high-quality barrel steel, and they current customer service (reputation) is excellent. I am aware there was a time when this was not the case, but HK USA has undergone a complete "re-building," I trust they will honor the barrel warranty for their rifles. As you stated, if the chrome issue is such a big deal to a potential buyer, then don't buy it. However, I agree with Henry, it really isn't a thing for a civilian rifle. If you need an over the beach rated rifle, or you are operating in a very aggressive environment, then you are most likely a Mil/Gov (maybe contractor), and you will have access to 416's offered at the Gov price point, so go that route. However, if the extent of your "operating" is going to the rifle range once-in-a-while to poke holes in paper, the chrome issue is a moot point. If you are that hung up on it, it is obviously simply a "gun" measuring contest for you.
As usual, no small things left unturned. That’s a very complete assessment of this new offering. I loved the MR752 A1 because it felt built like a bazooka. Great review fine shooting
we posted separately on IG, just yesterday it cleared a .94moa group, there were two others that were similar, but were on "dirty" targets with other groups on it.
@@Inflorescensse That’s pretty exceptional precision from a service rifle. It contradicts to a certain degree the belief that external piston rifles/carbines are less accurate (precise) than DI weapons.
@@Chiller11 something that used to be true can change as manufacturing/materials science improves, doesnt mean it wasnt true. It also doesnt mean it isnt true for rifles that most people will own in the average people price tiers. Most people do not own a 4k piston gun. At 500, 1000, 1500, piston guns probably still fall behind DI
Great review and I appreciated you guys tracking down the details about the barrel metallurgy specs on both versions. I am looking forward to the 7.62 review. I bought one and waiting for it to show up.
It's such an awesome rifle. I wish you could buy your service weapon like back in the day. I remember it getting issued out and changing our gunfighting doctrine by having your cake and eating it too. Now you could designate an automatic rifleman as a DMR if the situation called for it. Two IARs could suppress while a whole squad maneuvered because their beaten zone was so tight. The LPVO just solidified that idea.
The internet "operators" that run slick setups with 3 mags plus one in the gun are about as real as a stripper's interest in you. A saw with a nutsack is like 25 lbs. If your weapon and ammo are going to be pushing 50 lbs no matter what wouldnt you want more ammo than gun? I can admit my war from 10/15 years ago isnt the same as today. So carrying an m27 with 16 mags/ 480 rds might be overkill now. But there's no denying the improvement this weapon brought to my unit.
Glad you like the MR223 i used at world shoot , i like it a lot myself 🥳 as for barrel life, ive had 28k rounds through my practice rifle which still hits mini IPSC poppers at 350m... Dont know if the same barrels are used in the european MR223 vs the US MR556 rifles though
Congrats at the world shoot Eirik! It was really interesting how you were able to make this system work so well, having shot military HK416 systems I NEVER thought that would be possible
Biggest thing overlooked or at least not explained by the project managers on this product line is market expectation and that HKUSA to my knowledge makes chrome lined M27 barrels here stateside per military contract. Why can’t they just pull those chrome lined barrels off the M27 assembly line here and do the proper lathe work to turn them down to A5 profile? No export/import restrictions apply if made here stateside per contract
I'll ask, but I have a feeling that they'll say that they wanted to focus on precision for a rifle that doesn't require in its use case. i'll see if i can reply here when i get an answer.
My next AR will be this one. Your excellent discussion finalized my decision. It will be my SHTF battle rifle. I know the consequences of failures to fire, having fought in Vietnam. And for the first time I will have spent more for the rifle than what iI will put on the rifle! Thx again.
Looks like a great rifle. Barrel is inferior to the 416 for service rifle use. But I guess it is good enough. I’ve got a decent HK collection, but I think I’ll stick with Geissele.
Hey guys! Great video first of all, love your channel. I've recently participated in the RWS 2024 and besides the shooter (I had the pleasure to see Eirik Larsen shoot first hand on a couple of occasions and he is VERY impressive) the use of the MR 223 is very scarce. 90% of the shooters use DI systems with tunable gas blocks and reduced mass bolts. Our team was also wondering how the hell did the Norwegians manage to tame the HK recoil besides being total badasses lol. Besides this year the US absolutely wrecked the competition (which was unexpected to us) placing 9 shooters in the top 30 and 5 in the top 10!!
Yeah we were really surprised to see this as well. I'm curious if competition upgrades would be used for these A4 models down the road. Specifically the low mass carrier. Watching Eirik's shooting footage, that rifle has ZERO recoil. DI rifles are what we're all used to seeing at competition!
@@9HoleReviews Yup. 22 has more kick!! The only "issue" I see with a piston gun is the weight. I'm a PCC main and when I switched to rifle momentum of the barrel and compensator up front really screwed with my transition game. Switching to a Faxton 18" fluted barrel soon. Half a kilo less than my current Lothar... And man you feel the difference!! Well I don't see why HK wouldn't make those upgrades available for the A4 in the future. It would be a missed opportunity (then again: rifle competitioon shooters are pretty few and far between at least here in Europe)
@@9HoleReviews That massive brake the Norwegian rifle was wearing probably has a lot to do with the recoil management. Changing nothing else on your MR556A4 but the muzzle device would likely reduce felt recoil significantly.
Highest Quality Steel We use the same grade steel used in making cannon barrels - for its rifle barrels. Using the famous HK cold hammer forging process, this advanced technology manufacturing produces a barrel that provides superior accuracy and long service life. It is also moderately “swagged” with a slightly smaller internal diameter at the muzzle end than the chamber end. This has a positive effect on bullet accuracy and velocity and the thick, heavy contour MR series barrels also contributes to its precision.
Hi , I am a subscriber from New Zealand and really enjoy your content. I’m sure you’ve already been asked but would you ever consider attempting Erik Cortina’s Black Jack challenge with both open sights and scoped ? That would be an epic video.
tl;dr: Barrels aren't chromed because every vendor in the US is either not willing to work with HK because they're competitors, or not good enough at chroming for chrome lining the barrel to actually be worth it the way the European side process/competitors who won't do it are worth it. 3% chrome content is NOT stainless steel to be clear. Stainless would be more like 10% and other stuff would be going on. The HK barrels are very high quality, but ideally would still be lined if it could be done in the US correctly. The barrels have to be American finished for various legal and practical reasons. BCGs are semiauto, barrels have the denial tab, etc because the German government considers BCGs, barrels, etc to be machineguns more or less, so while in US law the BCG is nothing special, the German government would treat HK selling auto cut BCG as illegal distribution of machineguns without the proper end user certs. It would be better if they could be chromed, but HK is essentially unable to get it done to a quality worth doing. Hopefully this changes. HK never explained that stuff in full, HK USA did. Finding that stuff out before HK USA existed was pulling teeth and took forever and you had to speculate and you had to go on forums that had insufferable people etc. The receiver pin stuff on MR556A1 was just HK being weird. They're still weird. Nobody knows why. Really expensive rifle. Overall, HK USA is a lot less annoying and a lot more honest than plain HK was.
@superfamilyallosauridae6505 tldr you don't know anything lmao. The barrel blanks are from HK. How could they be competitors. HK usa is the civilian branch of HK defense, who chromes their barrels for people who need protection against salt water, corrosive ammo, and full auto sustained fire. Just remember. Every time you're sure you know something, the people who actually do, laugh at you
@@rustys.1070 You literally cannot read. The barrel blanks are from HK, the VENDORS WHO WOULD CHROME THEM IN AMERICA are their competitors, since they haven't set up any America based chroming capabilities of their own. Any government/mil customer in the US can get HK Germany made guns that aren't subject to any of the legal tomfoolery that necessitates the barrels be finished in America instead of Germany, because the German gov lets them sell them machineguns. So they can chrome them in Europe and just sell them as is in America to those customers.
Forgive my ignorance - but what keeps them from simply nitriding these barrels? Nitriding hardens the actual surface of the barrel, prevents potential corrosion and maintains the accuracy of a raw barrel. You can’t tell me a microscopic ferritic nitrocarburizing finish will alter accuracy. I always wondered this when I owned the original MR556 A1, which I ditched after getting tired of the obtuse weight. It was an absolute pig. Anyways. I love hearing the MK12 Mod H stuff, I completely agree. This rifle very much reminds me of what the original MK12 project achieved - an AR that excels at pushing 5.56 out to 800 yards. But that is still usable within a CQB setting. I love my PRI Mod H, super handy.
Laziness. Every other major manufacturer in the US and plenty of foreign outfits at least nitride their barrels. The environmental impact of salt bath nitride can be easily mitigated by switching to plasma nitride too.
HK is a company that has repeatedly faced bankruptcy only to be bailed out by the German government in one way or another (e.g., pressuring the French to adopt the HK416). The talk that a military small arms supplier can afford to ignore the US civilian market is often hot air when you look at how well companies like Ruger do in comparison and with greater consistency (and not repeated whispers of going broke). Also, German manufacturing has great QC, materials, and tolerances, but their actual "superior engineering" is often overstated. Glock clowned them in the 80s even though HK had polymer pistol frames first, and the G36 was a disaster that would end an engineer's career in any other industry (plastic trunnions + thermally unstable barrels). The UMP was mediocre, and the MP7 and its cartridge were so flimsy they had to sabotage the entire NATO PDW caliber standardization program just to mess with FN and save face. The HK416 is a well-built system. However, it not only copies Stoner's homework but also adds weight and requires re-zeroing handguard-mounted aiming devices every time you clean it. In exchange you get over-the-beach capability maybe 20 people will ever use in the history of combat, a functionally unnoticeable accuracy improvement, excess recoil that only took 2 decades to address, and inflating the cost of each rifle by a factor of 3x. That a good rifle comes out of all this is still insane when a better company would have a better product that costs half--and they do. Overall, the small arms industry is the red-headed stepchild of the global tech sector. Because it can't afford to pay a competitive salary compared to auto companies (as just one of many examples), you end up with a small handful of talented weirdos driving technical innovation (doing it for the love of the game but not all that well-paid) but also stagnant and ineffectual leadership/ownership and a bunch of underpaid line workers who last as long as Amazon warehouse workers. The US civilian market is subject to all these troubles but has so much money to offset that--imagine how much worse it must be for EU gun companies?
I would love to see a video addressing why they cannot Melonite the barrel. I know you addressed the topic with text but think the topic needs a more explanation.
Good to see they finally fixed the gassing issue. The early one I've shot kicks like a furious mule, I wish they could offer the newer adjustable gas plug as a retro-fit on earlier versions.
these guys are like Barbie's if they had a gun range model, what do you expect? they "play" with guns, so of course they just slap on all the accessories at the range.
Gents you didnt talk about the neutered or non neutered BCG or other proprietary changes. I would have loved a rundown on the actual differences between this and the m27. Especially us FFL SOT's
If you had to choose between a 14" LMT pin and weld non SBR with cheese grater rail, 14" pin and weld non-SBR geissele URGI upper, and a civilian HK 416 cut down to 14" with a pin and weld muzzle device, what would you choose? The muzzle device supports a titanium huxworx flow 556k can. The setup will run an Aimpint CompM4 or similar long battery life optic that is NOD friendly. The IR weapon light will either be a civi or Chinese PEQ15 or MAWL. expected engagement distances would be 50m to 200 with a possibility of reaching 500m so the setup would probably have Troy BUIS. I also have a nasty astigmatism so the rear sight would probably always be up when not using NODs
My understanding is that the 416 was never intended to have a chrome-lined barrel, but the military demanded it to fit in with their "mil-spec" requirements.
Could you guys do a national match AR? 20” barrel ready to head to Camp Perry? Rock River has a nice one. A4 so you can use optic? I think it would be a perfect run.

You said that elevation was off due to the 55 grain reticle. Does the "hump" on the upper also throw off elevation on the VCOG? It's my understanding the Marine Corps VCOG isn't MOA, and I also imagine the MOA reticles for the VCOG are set up for an AR-15. I'm wondering if they would even work on the MR556A4 because of the "hump"

Environmental reasons, gotta make greta happy
*I am not a metallurgist, I am a machinist with experience with different alloy types*
Wow this was informed and helpful.’
So the tools can get a "bite" ?
Its also chrome plating that is a problem.

They have a known issue of keyholing when they become copper fouled because of the tapered bore and no lining
I hear that being thrown around a lot, but not a lot of people actually tested it... i'm happy to test it. This sample we have will be shot a crap load, so we'll make sure to let the barrel "marinate" for a few thousand.

Very good German in the outro! Frohe Weihnachten und guten Rutsch!

Bro is talking like he has never had to carry that heavy ass setup. The switch to piston was a mistake
@evanf7334 who needs an l3 l4? S1 vertebrae are overrated..

No export/import restrictions apply if made here stateside per contract

Highest Quality Steel
We use the same grade steel used in making cannon barrels - for its rifle barrels.
Heck yeah! I think my Loot crate going to come in today!

I’m sure you’ve already been asked but would you ever consider attempting Erik Cortina’s Black Jack challenge with both open sights and scoped ?

tl;dr:
Barrels aren't chromed because every vendor in the US is either not willing to work with HK because they're competitors, or not good enough at chroming for chrome lining the barrel to actually be worth it the way the European side process/competitors who won't do it are worth it.

Any government/mil customer in the US can get HK Germany made guns that aren't subject to any of the legal tomfoolery that necessitates the barrels be finished in America instead of Germany, because the German gov lets them sell them machineguns. So they can chrome them in Europe and just sell them as is in America to those customers.

if a sig mcx had the gas valve pop out of the gun, you'd never hear the end of it.

The muzzle device supports a titanium huxworx flow 556k can. The setup will run an Aimpint CompM4 or similar long battery life optic that is NOD friendly. The IR weapon light will either be a civi or Chinese PEQ15 or MAWL. expected engagement distances would be 50m to 200 with a possibility of reaching 500m so the setup would probably have Troy BUIS. I also have a nasty astigmatism so the rear sight would probably always be up when not using NODs

@@Gieszkannehe is running an extended flash hider/suppressor host that slips over the barrel. This is so you get more suppression with the can (more volume) while keeping it short overall.
"we did not drop this down a pond and come back to it a month later" funny timing with Kentucky's most recent video
A long bath is slower but more gentle than a drag down a dirt road behind a truck.
The MR223 succeeded in sports? Colour me surprised. That are some hefty changes though. On top of what you've shown, he barrel has been changed 100%. It's _so_ heavy.
If it's a match how well does it group on like a traditional NRA HP course? 80 round course, be interested in how it does
The “HK416 “ I have at home, I’ve had since 2009. My POF 415. I kid, I kid, but…. It does fill the same space and role. Roast me. 😂
German export law doesn’t allow hk to export firearms with certain military features one of which being the chrome lined barrel
What’s up with Josh’s makeup in the Midway USA commercial? 😂
Seems like the rifle adjusted a tiny bit with each shot making the second shot go more right.
Coming from a someone who has Geiselle SD, and a DD Mk12 upper, I like nice stuff, but this looks like a lot of money, HOWEVER the price is right in like with KAC, LMTs, Spear MCXs etc. Shit like that is not for everyone, that’s ok. Buy what ya can, shoot it, and don’t get emotional on the internet, that’s weird.
I hope they do the 11.5 inch version along with the 7.62 version of the a4
They make 11 inch a4 pistol
Charging handle was prob rko'd by a 60lbs chewy box
Scar 16 has the user configurable removable gas “jets”
Will you ever make a video on the ruger American predator rifles?
Would love to see a m27 next
TFBTV did a recent vid on the new *Steyr DMR 762* -- a VERY expensive, short stroke piston gun that doesn't have a chrome lined barrel, either.
Their reason was that chrome would reduce accuracy.
I wonder if this is a new trend in high end rifles
that's been the standard from the 90's and 2000's. the internet just forgot about it.
@9HoleReviews Makes me kinda feel more confident in my M&P's nitride barrel... as misplaced as that trust may be 😏
