I'm not an expert on Besson valves from this era, but I believe these pistons would originally have been unplated. Unplated pistons were relatively common in this era, with instruments such as the Boosey & Co. Solbron and Silbron models using particular alloys of brass as an alternative way of extending valve life.

What the price of re-plaquing?
As of 2023, it is around $15 per valve, but prices can change depending on a lot of factors.
Why is a file ok, but not sandpaper?
