We had reel to reel film projectors and we could pull a screen up and watch black & white home movies, but they didn't have sound. My dad was a Gunsmith, and kept me in his shop, standing on a stool with a shield on my noggin for protection. He encouraged me to watch & learn the crafts. He had me oxy/actlyn welding, with a big torch and wire coat-hanger for the filler. (We didn't have a Little torch, like what you are using. I learned on a full-sized industrial torch) I was fluent with the torch, making art and selling it at a local art show, with a local artist we hunted and fished with, before I was 10 years old.
Lol I realized that one of my friends actually watches you and I didn’t think he was into this stuff. Hes a French horn/melaphone player but I didn’t know he watched you till he said you uploaded 😂
I'm neither musician nor instrument repairman. This video popped up on my feed...not connected to anything else I've chosen to watch...but I'm glad I got to see this. Old school techniques filmed with HD clarity, presented and explained just as, umm, clearly! I love that trades/crafts like these have a home to share with the world. For my work I've just begun to learn to weld (I know, not brazing but I understand the difference). I'll now forever have those three words in the back of my mind, "Control your heat!" While stitching a small crack is not so complicated, filling these holes is an incredible level of craftsmanship ! "Heat control" is not enough to describe this... wow. While this technique is aesthetically pleasant, I do not like to use it too much because it anneals the metal arround the stitch and make it prone to dents, which work may lead to other cracks since the metal is already "tired"... for example on the bottom of sousas I prefer patching because I know there will be more dents there.

Never worked on any musical instruments, can't even play the radio, but I have done a lot of torch work including welding, brazing, silver and soft soldering. You are pretty good at it, even if you have only soldered on musical instruments.
You have a very good and powerful burner. I think it will be difficult to close such a large hole with silver solder with an ordinary burner. Thank you very much for the video
I’m quite aware that this video is about brazing but I wanted a current video to ask a question about removing dents. I wanted to make sure it was current so you would possibly read the comments. Have you ever watched videos involving paintless dent repair on vehicles. I’m fairly new to your channel because I just discovered it probably a week ago. In any event in paintless dent repair, they use a special kind of light that will show any mark in metal and I am aware of the fact that it is very difficult to see some of these areas that are damaged. You may know about these lights and you may be aware of some of the type of tools that they use. If not if you go to UA-cam and put in paintless dent repair, watch a few videos you’ll get the idea. If you know about this already I’m happy.
Impressive. I was very concerned the silver plating wasn't taken off but doesn't seem like it mattered. Not a type of job many people are willing to do. I tried brazing chimes some years ago, but it didn't really turn out. It's very tricky. The brass anneals too.
Hello! I have been watching your videos for about a month now. My brother died in october, he was a wonderfully talented tuba player. I inherited his tuba and made the mistake of storing it in a storage unit to keep it safe. There was a fire on march 26 and I am just now gathering the parts of his tuba out of the big wet mess the firefighters made mixing everybody's stuff together. Do you have any experience fixing brass instruments that have survived a fire?
@@DNKG669 instrument was cracked that means it over hardened. Do you even know what annealing does? On top of that annealing would have made easier to work opened cracks back together to solder back together.
Actually, this technique is exactly OPPOSITE from a jerry-rig. This is actually how its supposed to be done...the younger crowd, most often; does the jerry-rigging.

The mother of all tricks soldering silver is the right flux.

Just a note. These supplies can be found at any refrigeration supply wharehouse. We braze copper and high silver all the time.

question.... would you want to get the dents out before repairing the cracks and spider cracks? or would you get the Dents out after the repair?
I always hear what sounds like a compressor when you use that torch. Are you using a fuel gas with just compressed air? What gas do you use?
I suspect it's an oxygen concentrator. My mother-in-law had one and it sounded just like that. It concentrates oxygen out of the air directly.
@@dkd1228 you are correct. He uses a repurposed medical (dentist's?) oxygen concentrator to run the oxi half of his jeweller's torch.

I am gonna try this on a tuba bell that someone put a tinkers dam in. Should be interesting to see if I can make the inside look good too.

What causes the cracks?
The clue is in the name. Spider cracks are caused by spiders. Brass-eating spiders are the worst!
