Panasonic Lumix S1 vs BGH1 vs GH5s vs GH4, What really changed?

  • If you're wondering what the difference is between these 4 Panasonic Lumix cameras, make sure to check this comparison before making a purchase decision. Which one have you tried?
    What is your experience with these cameras? Do you own any of them?
    The GH4 was released in 2014 and still kicks it. Still a good choice today? let's find out!
    The Gh5s was released in 2018, which is a cinema version of the beloved GH5. This camera had dual native ISO, a better sensor but the IBIS.
    The Lumix S1 was released in 2019. The first full-frame camera from Panasonic. A stunning camera that still holds its ground against newer cameras. This camera came as a trio, the S1, the S1R for photographers, and the S1H for cinematographers. The S1 is a hybrid between the two, really. This camera could challenge an ARRI when it comes to color rendition.
    The Lumix BGH1 was a surprise. A cube camera in the likes of the Z-Cam and RED Komodo. This box camera is in fact a re-housed GH5s with an improved Venus engine (CPU), more codec flavours and high versatility and connectivity.
    I own these 4 cameras at the office and have used them for a while; here are my observations and comparison between the four.
    0:00 Intro
    2:33 Dynamic Range

      You're right! The GH5s native ISO in V-Log is 800! Thanks for noticing!
      400 ISO if for non-log profiles. At least the fact remains that the BGH1 still would have about a full stop more of range. I'm curious to test the difference between 400 and 800 on the GH5s to see... maybe 1/4 stop difference?

    • @ntchi

      The only reason it's not is because of the long GOP codec, no all-I and lack of olpf. Netflix wants to make sure you can capture internal highbitrate especially for documentary work. But the truth is that some Netflix content is shot on non-approved cameras ;-)

    Hey, thanks for the review. GH4 does have one secret super-power, which is that with a compatible recorder, it can do external 422 10 bit. I actually had expected that you would use that combination rather than the internal 8 bit, since that would bring it closer to the other cameras in terms of quality/dynamic range, I think. GH5 and beyond of course offer major improvements

    One huge difference is the Leica L mount for the S1 so you cannot use any of the other lenses since it is a totally different sized sensor, whereas the GH5s has a slightly larger sensor than the GH4, especially in 4:3 and uses the same lenses. I personally love shooting in 4:3 to match with movie cameras and that is often overlooked as everyone seems forced to use 16:9 or 17:9 which is a shame. I personally like intercutting the 4:3 with the 1:37 ratio movie cameras.

    Thanks for the detailed review - so would I be correct in saying that you would go for the S1 over the BGH1? I'm leaning heavily toward the S1 right now, but still looking at the Sony A7III or A7C.

    • @ntchi
      @ntchi  2 роки тому +1

      S1 and BGH1 have different use. If you also do photos. Go with S1. If you mostly work as a videographer the BGH1 has more video features and network capabilities for streaming. Bgh1 has less rolling shutter also, better for sport or fast paced content. S1 has better color and dynamic range.

The thing is I posted this comment 11 months ago and still haven't written a short for me to shoot. I'm leaning towards getting an iPhone 14 since it's time to upgrade anyway, seeing if I actually use it to film some stuff, and then if I do, getting an S5 as an upgrade. Maybe a tad more. But less than half a stop. Since dynamic range is not just codec but also sensor technology and processing.

  • @PhilipLuckey
    @PhilipLuckey 2 роки тому +1

    Just curious that the GH4 wasn’t captured at 10 bit 422 for VLOG (supported for external recording via HDMI) for a closer comparison. That explains the clipping and color reduction for GH4 pictures. :)

    • @ntchi
      @ntchi  2 роки тому

      Good point! The goal was to show how they perform "out the box" without external recorders. That shows the achievable results possible for most users. Even at 10bit I doubt the GH4 would clip further away, it's still vlog L. Maybe a smoother roll-off.
