    Hi Bryan - great video. I just did the headlight replacement on my '15. I had previously owned a BMW R1200RT and replacing headlight bulbs on that was a chore and a major pain in the butt. The FJR makes that seem easy.
    Your video was very helpful in providing the guidance necessary to get to the bulbs.
    Cheers and Thanks

    Great, great review. I just got a 2015 with 350 miles on it. The guy laid it over in his driveway, got scared/upset and wanted to get rid of it. I am using your video for the coolant change to remove and replace the side plastics and, unfortunately, the saddlebag. It was invaluable.
    This is another spectacularly useful video. Thank you for your work.

    Bugger, I was all set to go and order some LED lights for my 03......Thankfully I watched the whole video LOL,
    not five minutes before I ordered a full set of decals from Realtime Industries after watching your reflective decal video....I think it would be cheaper if I went to bed instead ordering mods for my bike :) LOL
    Seriously though, REALLY good and instructive videos. Keep up the good work

    Very honest review. Clear instructions. This is 2016 leds are brighter but H4 high beams still not good enough. Too much light in the vicinity, spotty too.
    I wish to review a Bi LED projector soon.

    Being an electrician, LED lamps/bulbs make me tingle with excitement. So much better light output and the light colour is so much better. Daylight White is the way to go.
    I have white 6000K LED's all over my house (they are not on all at once) they just feel and look better.

    Thanks for the detailed stripdown.I have just installed my LED bulbs with cooling fans. yes no brighter. Not like HID but more reliable but like you say less load on the alternator and they will last much much longer than the original halogen.
    By the way the pair only cost $17 CAD including shipping and before anybody tells me the Chinese ones are rubbish, I have the same one's in my car and they have worked flawlessly for over a year. If the were going to fail it would of failed by now.

    I had the pleasure to ride the new Yamaha Tracer MT-09 (FJ-09 in the USA I believe), the full LED from Yamaha is AWESOME and riding at night with it it's very good. I thought to buy some LED lights for my Fazer but after this maybe I'll go with the xenon lights.

    Did you ever update to LEDs, the beam spot has been greatly improved as of 2019 with brands such as Diode Dynamics with their Street Legal SL1s.

  • @JanekScyzoryk
    @JanekScyzoryk 8 років тому

    It looks exactly as with my concurs when I installed HID couple of years ago. It seams that the light beam shoots much further away but it lacks the area near ahead. I think it could be caused by the metal housing that blocks the bottom of the bulb. I was planning to cut it out as much as possible to allow the light to go down of the bulb. If you look at the regular bulb it doesn't have anything around it and so the light generated can go in all directions. What do you think? Have you had any experience with modifying the bulbs?

  • @iskinmind7020
    @iskinmind7020 2 роки тому +2

    If you want more brightness, as of August 2021, best case scenario is to change your light assembly altogether for a new one. This includes reflectors. Problem with changing normal bulbs for LED is that your reflectors are not designed for it. LED are directional and require focusing reflectors so as to not blind incoming traffic. Your old unit relies on multiple reflections to work with LED and stay legal at the same time. All of this combined saps much luminosity from your setup. Just spend extra and get a new head unit with a reflector that is specifically designed for LED. Simply changing bulbs is a partial solution at best, and likely will not gain you any results. Also, LED become less and less efficient as their power goes up. That is due to increased heat output relative to their size. Basically, a 50W LED is not a lot brighter than good quality 50W normal lights. And improper reflector will sap some of that brightness, possibly even making it visibly dimmer. There are some extremely expensive LED bulbs with 3 and 4 surfaces that try and mirror conventional bulbs in terms of light pattern. But at a price point of $300-ish for a pair, you might as well cough up a little extra and go for a full conversion.

    Thanks for the video Bryan. After watching this I am dreading the day when my headlamp bulbs burn out, lol. That is incredibly difficult for something that should be such an easy task. I generally switch to Phillips SilverStar Ultra's on my cars and bikes. Easy stock replacement, slightly brighter and gives you that ultra white light (and fairly inexpensive). I was curious how difficult it is to get that dash panel back IN. Did you have to screw with it for awhile or pop it back in immediately? You got me thinking about removing at least that panel and using a 3-D carbon fiber wrap on it. Might be a great accent to the dash. I also wonder what a dealer would charge to change the bulbs.. that's looking like 2 hours labor ! LOL.

    Thanks man...I love the color of the LED light but not really any greater distance. I would ask if you thought perhaps the LED light made you more visible/noticeable to other vehicles at night? If that were the case I might invest just for that reason and the cooler looks. In other words, if that light stood out better from all the other predominantly halogen lights?

    Love the DayMaker LED headlight and spots on my 2015 Harley FLHTK. Coming from a HID Xenon system in a Nissan 350Z auto, I didn't want to take a step back and downgrade back to dingy, yellow halogens on my motorcycle. LEDs are fantastic.

      Hi. Here in Spain, the LED lamps for motorbikes are strictly forbidden (unless OEM factory mounted). So, don´t pass the goverment inspection and you are not alowed to drive, plus a big fine if the Police stop you. Not logical here. A few months ago, I put the LED ligths on my FJR and went to the inspection. Since the first moment, the inspector said to me "that lights are not permited". I had to back home and replaced the old ones and gone again to the inspectión. Fortunatly, now I ride with the Ok stamp on my FJR, but is a nigthmare this kind of things in my country.

    Bryan: Video was a great help! Just need to know about the rubber boots….. do they go back on or not? ( No mention of reinstalling them )….
    I put the adapter in first like you did, then installed the boots. Then inserted the bulb unit through the rubber boot and into the adapter mount.
    Is this ok?…as it appears that the boot covers most of the cooling fins….????

    TwoWheelObsession I have all LED lights on my motorcycle. It is standard on the 2014 Honda CTX 1300. My front headlights are great, but I sometimes wonder if people can see me, even with the lime yellow jacket, gloves, and helmet. I wonder if I need to get a flashing LED Lights for even daylight running lights, after what I have experienced on the local Arkansas Highway, as you will see in with a few of my videos that I uploaded recently.

    Hi, Much, much easier going in underneath, from the front. Remove the two bolts securing the plastic brake hose shroud, it can't be pulled-out but can be moved to the side. The globe clip can be seen through the front of the headlight and moved out of the way. And the globe can be easily seen through the headlight which makes it sooo much easier to insert and re-clip.
    Try it, much easier. Mine is the 2015 model, same setup as the one you did the video on. H4 LEDs have come a long way since you did yours, those things you had were clearly rubbish.

    did you play with your headlight aim at all because I can clearly see in the night shots with the led lights a car's tail light reflectors and the license plate and I don't see that with the halogen. I mention aim because the halogen light just looks like its pointing down and to the right where the led was up a little higher and straight ahead. most people point them like that because they like to see the edge of the road and what's lurking in the ditch. but hey ideas for your next led comparison video right.

    You gotta get those 3 sided led lights because your headlight reflector is "triangle" those 2 sided led lights are more towards to the circular headlight reflector. I bought 2 led lights, one is 2 sided and the other is 3 sided and my headlight shape is "triangular" similar to the fjr. The 2 sided led lights barely gives out any light but when i swap out with the 3 sided led and its bright as hell, brighter than my stock halogens sooo yea

    great video buddy , question where did you get your led stripe lights ?.

  • @c7uk
    @c7uk 9 років тому

    Hi - Nice video, but I think the reason you had such ppoor results is down to the particualr LED you had - the chips are supposed to face UP (for beam) and DOWN (main). You weren't getting the full spread of light in the correct area of your bike reflector with them pointinf Left and Right....
    This isn't to say that the bulbs you had were good - there are loads of poor kits out there (and the technology isn't quite there yet for plug-and-play sytems) however better results can be had. I bought a set to try in July/August and the difference IS noticeable as to the amount of light and spread. The downside is the beam pattern is closer to that of a sealed beam lamp wothout the defined cut-off of the H4s. THat said, I've not been flashed by oncoming traffice as there is none of the scatter associated with aftermarket HIDs.
    Don't give up yet!

    very nice video i have to say but you need to watch out on what LED bulbs/ kits you buy there just like HID kits the cheaper they are mostly means the cheaper the quality. so a result that may have been why they were so bad. i personally like Plasma Glows kits and i am currently waiting for my kit to show up for my 2014 cruze not only are their LED light surface bigger then the ones on your bulb they are made from high quality materials. so if anyone would like me to make a video please let me know i will try my best as i have never done one before or if anyone wants to help me make one thatll work also. but back to as i was saying they make products both for motorcycles and vehicles so if you can check those out i would like to hear your opinion on there bulbs for your bike

    Good grief, you would of thought that a bike so beautifully made would have a much better way to install h/lamp bulbs.

    The problem with the led lights is not other than the light color, is too cold. The halogen original bulbs are around 3500K and those led are in the 5000K color temperature. This is why the originals are better. If you find leds with 3500K color you will find that the leds works as the halogens.
    I tested the new BMW R1200GS for a Chilean magazine. This bike have leds lights from factory, and I didn't like it because you cannot see the pavement nor any opaque thing, but the reflecting things bright as you never see before.
    Regards from Chile!

      Jose Pedro Espinosa That is certainly part of it, but if they were also significantly brighter like the marketing says (200% brighter for example) it would overcome the less perceived light. Unfortunately they are not brighter. Even if they were the stock 3500k, the throw would not be as good as stock.

    • @JosePedroEspinosa
      @JosePedroEspinosa 9 років тому

      TwoWheelObsession If you compare halogens with leds both the same color you will find that the leds are 5 times brighter for the same power (watts). The people who love to tuning their cars love cold color lights (over 4000K) and this is why most of the new bulbs like Xenon and led are made in colors that those guys love, but for the human vision the most efficient color is 3500K. If you find leds bulbs in 3500K color try it, I'm sure you will be happy with it.

      +Randy Smith Simply put, none will work correctly in reflector housings meant for regular bulbs.

      Not necessarily true at all. Why are you testing a badly designed LED bulb? Why don't you contact Cyclops Adventure Sports for a quality LED bulb that will give far better results.

      I've had pretty good luck with LED bulbs I've tried in my '99 civic (I know, completely different application). The Opt7 FluxBeam H4 bulbs work pretty well and have a tad more glare than I'd like, but they have really wide, bright and full beam with the cool white color. PIAA H4 led's are also pretty sweet and have a perfect cutoff with the little flare up to the right to illuminate road signs, but are't quite as bright at the Opt7 and have a bit of a purple tint to them. As of July 2016, the Opt7's are down to $80 a set (were $100 just a few months ago) and the PIAA's are $220-$250 (I got lucky found a used set for $170). I'd be tempted to try out the Cyclops and Mictuning H4 LED headlights as well, since they both have little anti-glare shields on them and are both around the same price as the Opt7 bulbs. I've also tried Genssi H4 led's that had a COB led placed on both the top and bottom that fired the light straight into the top of the reflector, resulting in a very narrow, short-throwing beam that was also pretty blue.

      +Chris sibley oh yeah, the cooling fans on the PIAA lights are considerably quieter, whereas the opt7's almost sound like a vacuum cleaner

    They resultant disappointing performance was surprising. It may be a matter of you get what you pay for. In 2013 I put Kuryakyn LED's on my Harley and it was the best OVER PRICED item I ever bought! I absolutely love them! There is a draw back though, I am only allowed to ride at point at night now! Everyone else can see with them and I blind them when behind them!

    Dude, you totally took the hard way in replacing your lights. At least on my 2007, I can reach up behind the front fork from below the cowl and by feel unplug, remove, and reinstall both head lamps.
    Turn the front wheel left or right to accommodate space to reach up.
    5 min... done.

    Your problem was that you bought the wrong led kit, you needed something with a ballast what you have is no better than those fake Chinese stuff that has like 40 led in one bulb. A Cree led kit that has the ballast and the cooling fans on the led will outshine any hid and halogen hands down
