In fairness, Anselmo lost his ability to sing falsetto in the early 90's. There's only one video of Phil attempting to sing Cemetery Gates live and he can't really replicate the album version which is not surprising as he's naturally a bass-baritone vocally.

    • @foundingfodder8225

@@DarkArterialGore I'd agree. He progressively was singing harder each album. Prior to Cowboys he was singing falsetto on previous albums. I seen them in 1990 on Cowboys tour and didnt attempt that part. BUT he did sing it and he had great real range.

@@DarkArterialGore I don't think Phil sang those high notes in falsetto. It doesn't sound like falsetto to me. But yeah, in any case he lost those high notes quite quickly after this.

@@DarkArterialGore he had lost some of his voice at that point because of all the smoking and drinking but bass baritone vocals can still go high if well manipulated! I think it was just the damage that got the most out of him.

Phll was also that fat guy with a long hair and a beard just it was a later period i think he is bold again he Pantera was on a festival in Serbia 2 years ago just it isnt original crew because of premarure deaths .
Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, formed in 1981. The group's best-known lineup consisted of the Abbott brothers-drummer Vinnie Paul and guitarist Dimebag Darrell-along with vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown. In addition to their development and popularization of the groove metal subgenre, Pantera is credited (along with others such as Testament, Sepultura and Machine Head) for being part of the second wave of thrash metal scene from the late 1980s to early-to-mid 1990s.
Having started as a glam metal band, Pantera released three albums in the mid-1980s with founding member Terry Glaze as lead vocalist. Looking for a new and heavier sound, Pantera replaced Glaze with Anselmo in late 1986 and released Power Metal in 1988. The band secured a record deal with the major label Atco the following year. With its fifth album, 1990's Cowboys from Hell, Pantera popularized the groove metal genre, while its 1992 follow-up Vulgar Display of Power exhibited an even heavier sound. Far Beyond Driven (1994) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Tensions began to surface among the band members when Anselmo became addicted to heroin in 1995; he almost died from an overdose in 1996. These tensions resulted in the recording sessions for The Great Southern Trendkill (1996) being held separately. The ongoing tension lasted for another seven years, during which only one studio album, Reinventing the Steel (2000), was recorded. Pantera went on hiatus in 2001 but was disbanded by the Abbott brothers in 2003 amid communication problems and their conclusion that Anselmo would not return to the band.
The Abbott brothers went on to form Damageplan, while Anselmo continued work on several side projects, including Down, which Brown joined as well. On December 8, 2004, Darrell was shot and killed on stage by a mentally unstable fan during a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio. Vinnie Paul went on to form Hellyeah after his brother's death, and died of heart failure in 2018,[4] leaving Brown and Anselmo as the only surviving members of the band's best-known lineup.

There’s actually a few vids out there of Phil playing the guitar. One actually has him playing while Dimebag sings. He’s really not bad but he has admitted that he’s unable to play and sing at the same time so sticks to what he does best.

    • @MsCruisein

He's the guitarist in several of his side bands. He plays well, but like you say, he said he finds it difficult to do both at the same time. He also plays drums and bass well and can be heard doing so on various albums and in concert. I think his calling is as a front man... but I don't say that to belittle his abilities. I say that because he's in a class of his own as a front man.

As others have said, the longer version is better. But this song is amazing. I LOVE the bass sound on this album. You can hear it better and it plays a less passive/filling space roll. Rex is a beast. This song has Phil's best lyrics and vocals imo. Those Pre-Chorus or Verse 2 parts are incredible. Smooth grooving into "WELL I GUESS YOU TOOK MY YEEWWTH!!! AND GAVE IT AAHHLLLL AWAAAYAYAYAYYYYYY!!!!" FUCK YEAH! Can i say it again? FUCK YEAH!!!
Im not sure how many Pantera songs were written by anyone not in the band. They were proud guys and always wanted to do things their own way. I Doubt they have more than 1 or 2 songs written by anyone else. Also, you can't really write in place of Dimebag. Ppl would be able to tell

Phil had such a great range, it's a shame it was mostly retired after Cowboys from Hell.

Honestly you should really look into more of Phil Anselmos music. He's still singing in a number of bands (down, scour, and Phil anselmo and the illegals) as well as producing his own music and other heavy metal bands on his record label.

Yep, that's young Phil before he trashed his vocal chords with massive amounts of smoking and illegal substances. That being said, I think I like his current vocals just as well. You get any more metal than Phil.

He still sounds good to me. But yeah his voice has definitely changed over the years.
