Andy Carlson achieves one thing almost no SD cover band ever manages to - he's got Donald Fagen's timbre and phrasing down, and got them down cold. That seems to be harder than you'd think.
I am so impressed by this performance it’s as good as it could possibly get this was my favorite album 40 years ago in high school Donald Fagen would be proud!
A great song choice and performed very well. Usually these types of videos (Berklee etc) sound tight and professional but feelingless. This one has the feeling - well done. (Former Lowell Tech graduate!) The vocal is really good.
The video looks and sounds great, and the band is awesome! I hope they do more live performances. I would love to see and hear Aja performed live. So great to see UML students today getting into music that meant so much to me during my "ULowell" days in the 70's!
I've seen 'Dan perform in Tamp, Chicago 4 nights, Dallas, LA, Colorado Springs right before Pandemic - and you guys got the groove. Who are these Kids who write messages in the Cloud Computing sky?

I went to the music school back in the late 70s (when it was known as ULowell). So proud to see this work! (Must say, however, the lead singer on Kid Charlemagne at the end is WAY off key!). Otherwise, what a pro production. Great job, kids!
This sounds amazing, congratulations to everyone involved! I especially enjoyed what you did on the chorus when singing the part "They heard the call" on the chorus. I'm completely ignorant on music theory, but if feels like there is a "divergent" note just for the word "they" that sounded amazing.
Nice one kiddos !...Bringing back to" life " a Steely Dan classic from over 40 years ago...(I first heard it when I was 19 way back in the late '70's)... so forgive the sarcasm!...
what's with the half sharp key did you digitize it at a slower tape speed? the piano player was playing some A naturals in the shots, leading me to believe it was recorded in F# minor but slowed to F half sharp minor
This is exactly correct, i found the tempo of the original tracking to be just a bit too fast so i expanded the track digitally thus lowering the pitch. It was recorded at 96kHz 24 bit so the upper harmonics are not distorted, just added this larger than life quality to a lot of the instrumentation which i thought was neat and fitting for the overall aesthetic, hope you enjoyed!
I actually prefer your horn track. It had more depth than the original recording. The drum sound was on point and the vocals told the listen "this is our song, this ain't karaoke." Excellent
Awesome. Session level from the instruments. However, and I don't mean to sound rude, there is way too much compression / limiting on the vocal track. Dial it back, re-EQ. That vocalist needs to be out front and not buried in the mix.
This is predictably amateur. There are numerous timing issues (your drummer is really rushing) and the lead vocal isn't there at all. The horn arrangement isn't full enough either and it should be given the amount of players here to execute it. A couple of the chords aren't exactly on either. All the over-the-top compliments notwithstanding, the issues here could have been easily fixed and I'm not sure why they weren't. The finished product isn't there but I give credit for even trying it.
The vocalist is on point!
As a lifelong Steely Dan fan and knowing that they recorded with only the best of the best session musicians, you guys did a great job on this one.

"UMass Lowell Steely Dan Ensemble" is my favorite thing I've read on the internet in a LONG time.
3:04 the trumpet player is even covering Fagen’s judgement of the solo lol
Deep cut. My favorite SD song ever. If I had walked by your auditorium while you were running through this number, I would have flipped the f**k out.
Same here!
Sax Soloist and Lead Vocal 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Tenor sax absolutely took my heart and ran, all of you were so tight. Harmonies were perfect, sounds so good!!

Cannot get over how clean this is! Absolutely great sounding recording and mix. You guys nailed it!
Definitely!
Paying tribute to music that came out when their grandparents first heard it. Awesome.
Tight! Tight!
Sounds great. Looks great. Is great.

I think Donald and Walter would both be honored.

we will be performing Aja live at Durgin Hall in early April!
Love you, Dad ❤️🙏
Awesome!!! Andy Carlson has a perfect voice to sing that song!!! Great job from the team!!!
love that you are bringing an old number to life with a nice rendition!
I've seen 'Dan perform in Tamp, Chicago 4 nights, Dallas, LA, Colorado Springs right before Pandemic - and you guys got the groove. Who are these Kids who write messages in the Cloud Computing sky?
Awesome. You did justice to one of the hardest and best of their songs IMHO. Great Job!!!

First time I’ve ever seen trombonists be cool, too!
Really tight, professional rendition!! That last missing chord is vibrating in my head.
Outstanding

Outstanding rendition! Just accidentally stumbled into this video!

HOOLY FUCKKKK THIS IS SICK
Groove is wobbly, some if the sax is limp. But otherwise not bad. Vocals are the right idea - good energy.
Like the lead singer
You never hear Caves covered. Well done. Shame about the masks, tho. Hat are they supposed to symbolize?
nude art modeling.....is the worlds 2nd oldest profesion
way too tricky photography to be taken seriously by SD lovers.

Good performance but this video is way overproduced
Disagree with the latter.
Ur Mom's overproduced
The masks ruined it.
what are you triggered? Cry about it
Apparently, playing a brass instrument, or singing, automatically protects you from those pesky airborne buggers.
Why are they wearing masks?
Masks? Come the fuck on.

im glad u enjoyed the parts that you did and see its potential, thanks for your input!
