I bought my first Gary Numan album, The Pleasure Principle, in 1980. I'm turning 58 this year and he still fills my ears with the synths and sounds and voice I loved back then.
@@LoveMyBoys3 aMEN!!! Just waiting for the household to wake up, then I'm going to blast Metal, on repeat, for the whole day, while I finish online work. Yea!!! 🎹🎶🎤
One of the most underated British musicians of our times. No drugs and no madness; just a humble guy deserving of a major motion picture soundtrack contract Keep up the good work, Gary. Looking forward to another tour. Awesome, just awesome.
A man who lived one of the worst nightmares on a music's career (to see his career drowning in a well made of his own lack of creativity and self-esteem) and then made the best comeback we've ever seen by changing intelligently his musical career in a very modern-day way, making better music than NIN, Depeche Mode and others.
@@randydarklight And if only the main stream radio stations would give him a little airtime instead of the same rubbish on a loop, he'd have eight more...
Gary Numan was years ahead of his time. I watched him as a child in the late 70's, and I'm still here now watching him. What an outstanding, innovative musician. He really was, and is, in a class all of his own. One word sums him up aptly, that word is, 'SUPERLATIVE.'
Such a distinctive , definitive sound . My dad took me to see him when I was 16 in Glasgow ,We were denied at the door by the bouncer because of my age , my dad saw the guitarist (rob holiday) goto the tour bus , so he goes down and explains the situation , a few moments later me my mum my dad and my little sister are being escorted in to see the show !!! What a show it was !!
For forty years now, I've never been able to understand how - or why - Gary's tunes have made me feel simultaneously both uplifted and yet depressed, powerful yet hollow, valiant and yet moved almost to tears, raised to a sparkling crescendo where all I can see is the darkness below. But he always did. And he still does. And it still feels like catharsis every time. Thanks Gary.
In my opinion the best artists keep producing because it comes from the soul. What they do is express what most of us can't. But we sure feel it in the "hook". This man is genius
According to the 'man himself, he kept producing music for years after it stopped coming from anywhere *near* the soul -- but then he found his path again and he once again believes in what he's doing. If you felt the "hook" even during the times that he didn't, though, I doubt that he would begrudge you that enjoyment...
Wow that man’s brain is phenomenal. The fact that he’s managed to reinvent himself and continues to sound unique is unbelievable. I’ve never heard another artist like him! He’s staying up there In my top 5 favorite musicians of all time.
@@simonturner3176 you should have a good time. He said in interviews many times that he has more fun now than he ever did. That's the kind of person you want to see if they've been playing music for almost half century.

I gotta say, I am a Christian, but I totally get it : "you can pray for God's mercy, and pretend that He hears you" Because in the modern era, where are the saints? I see only Liars and Demons and ruin
@@1musichombre As if it was any different in the past. To be a saint means you successfully fooled yourself as well as everyone else. At least nowadays organized religions can't be as blatant as they used to be. Like taking money in exchange for forgiveness of sins. They're still soaking up money and trying to hold on to what influence they still have but they can't get away with murder, theft, etc anymore. Not without being exposed at least. I don't mind if people are religious as long as they keep it to themselves, but that doesn't necessarily mean I respect their beliefs (especially the ones that explicitly say people like me deserve hell and eternal torture) and organized religion has been a blight on society for too long.

I am approaching 33 years of age, I have always known of Gary Numan from the song 'Cars'. This last year or so I have looked into his music more. I am mainly into metal but do listen to other genres. I stumbled back to Numan his last record and I now absolutely love this man's music and his genius. Stoked for the new record.
Same here. Only knew this Gary from that Fear Factory version of Cars, which I really loved (and even had the personal blessings of the man himself, by contribution of his vocals). Then a few years later his music appeared in one of the NfS games (I think NfS Carbon...?). Checked him out a bit more. I can't really connect to his old stuff, but his newer stuff really connects well to my taste for dark and gloomy electronica.
Similar story for me. Heard 'Cars' back in the early 90's when I was about 4 and became more into his earlier albums when I got older. Then this track appeared in my 'release radar' playlist on Spotify and it blew me away. I thought the new EP was good but the album is even better. There is still an undertone of his classic sound but such a different vibe with this album. Such an adaptable artist after 40 years. This album is as fresh as his early work. Going to see him in May 2022
Love how this man hasn't lived off his past, looks and sounds better than ever. Very humble given his success, I hope this does as well as it should. Classy.
Can't believe there are so few recent comments. The visuals in this are enough, forget the music! OMG, the fusion of old and new just mesmerizes me. Incredible how this man continues to delight fans, both old (1979, for me) and new. LOVE.
Numan never ran out of ideas once he had control of his career. And here he is in his 50s? 60s? I dont know, im 40. The man has to be 60something, making bangers like this. I know enough people in their 60s to know that it's rare to have anyone that age that never got convinced you can be too old for certain stuff. For many reasons Numan is one of my role models. He is on the spectrum like i am. I know he was honest about it before it became a big subject of psychology, when asbergers, closer to when the name itself was coined. He's a genius, though, and his honesty about depression, anxiety, trouble with social situations when you fail to conform, or to me succeed in not conforming. He needs as much credit as kanye for his studio genius. He was making these records with a new dark sound in the background and never got airplay, although they are some of the best examples of, i wouldn't know what to call his music now. He wasn't trying to be industrial or goth. Its like he has Always wanted his own genre, and he kindof made it happen. Trent Reznor would argue in interviews he was not making industrial music. Trent totally was making music that was kindof in the gary genre. Lol . I bought up almost every release since exile. I am 40, so what makes it special is his comeback happened when i was old enough for it to be meaningful. Yet his early career is really good. Synthpop came back in the 2000s, and there are some songs from the early 80s that would have fit in if was released in 2000. i used to be a big fan of nine inch nails from downward spiral to probably with teeth. And trent was influenced by exile i believe when he made pretty hate machine. So one of the most famous artists from their era, we owed his signature sound to Gary Numan.
@@thej3799 Wow. That was really interesting and obviously close to home. I very much appreciate that. We all come to Gary from different perspectives. Me, it was because of the FM broadcast that I did. I recognized what he was. And I have been a die-hard fan since.. what.. 1979. So glad to see that others get it.
@@_MrPink_ So do either/both of you two remember when he was widely dismissed by the critics as a soon-to-be-forgotten David Bowie clone? (I know, I know: WTF would a David Bowie "clone" even sound like?!?)
Gary Numan is living proof, that you dont burn out or fade away unless you actually chose to. This is epic. He just keeps it goin' full force. Freakin legendary. I can't wait to buy the full album release.
The imagery already has me sold. Looking forward to this. The bloke is a bit of a genius in my book. A humble one at that. Pretty bloody rare these days.
I saw him perform at a festival around 12 years ago... I was blown away so decided to send a thank you email to his label on the off chance that it would get passed on... quite he surprise then when he emailed me back personally about a week later. He took the time to tell me which of his albums he thought I should check, and which he thought should be avoided. Came across every bit the humble artist. That was before the release of his last album which to me felt like a well-deserved triumph for someone who has stuck with their chosen craft regardless of what the press had to say at any given time. So Thanks for that Gary, and congratulation on what sounds like another gem of an album. I hope your proud of this one too.

@@markmcarthy596 egocentric religion. To survive we need to being more focused on nature than on humans. Religion was just a little chapter in our evolution. To survive in the past we needed to be kind to each other (we created moral and religion to live in the socle of a society) now, we are facing autodestruction because we didn't learn to be kind to nature ad we learned how to be kind with humans. So at this point, we can say that religion is pointless. An egocentric religion is driving us right into autodestruction (microplastic water pollution will cause infertelity, more pandemics are yet to come because animals don't have any place to live so they're forced to be in a little spaces (causing more pandemics), and extreme weather is also yet to come. Humans are just not enough smart and kind collectively.
@@markmcarthy596 Gary is inspired by nature and the human destruction of nature to write this song. The nature is trying to destroying us because we are "too many humans". This touch my heart so deeply, because he's scientifically right and at the same time.he express himself like he was nature in an artistic way. Love it!

The synth 2 notes are exactly like his other song 'Mercy', but that simply reminds me that this is a continuing story this album. I like the pause in the song. His voice is as good as ever. I am a huge Numan fan and love this chorus.
I remember reading an interview or retrospective elsewhere where he mentioned Gemma pointed out the "Numan note" (a "vox" tinged note on high) that seems to be a signature note. This would've been in the Sacrifice era as he was putting everything back together. I wish I could find an actual concrete reference to point to. All my physical CDs are lost somewhere in storage after a move, and I can't find an online reference to point to. But, if you listen to Gary's early catalog (e.g. Pleasure Principle, Telekon) and even some songs from "I, Assassin", "Warriors", and "Berzerker", you'll find it there. Gary loves "anthemic" sounds, and that's where it hides. Take a trip to almost 22 years ago with Sacrifice: ua-cam.com/video/rvvc7J1-Hho/v-deo.html Go back a bit further, to 1984, and here it in The Secret (about a minute in, after it gets out of its own way): ua-cam.com/video/fZgNWlbJJ4o/v-deo.html Compare the hanging note at 56 seconds into The Secret to the hanging note at @2:00 - @2:03 here.
In the 80's I was a rock guy, earned a living as a guitarist. I thought GN was interesting, but he sort of slipped past me. I am SO GRATEFUL to be reunited with him & his music now. This song is more "rock" than most rock. & more interesting. The note choice in the verse melody "if you want me to" is just so slightly quirky enough to be genius. It's a hook in itself. I hope he never stops.
I´ve always wondered, how Gary has the ability to make his music sounding so scary. Omenous, secretive, like from an other world so different than ours, like a world underneath us and totally beyond our reach, in every level. His music has this very pitch black cloud surrounding it. And that´s JUST WHY I LOVE HIS MUSIC!!!!!
With his unique voice and dark-powerhouse synths, the humble genius that is Mr Numan still excels at simultaneously feeding and haunting the deepest parts of your imagination.
Oh Gary, you dark, dangerous, de-evolutionist diva. 40 years ago you propped me up and saved my life. And since then- you have been a friend in those darkest places. Your words move mountains- and save souls.
Numan is totally on the money with this track... Sums up our poor ravaged planet 🌏 he will always be a musical innovator and is pushing forward with his heavy Industrial yet tuneful sound not to mention the detached steely cold yet soulful vocals... How many other artists who emerged in the late 70's are still pushing forward with their unique sound and take on the world...? 🎶 The machines still rock 🎶 🎹 🎸 🎤 🕺
I saw him for the first time ever on Monday. Same here, loved and savored every second. I have no idea why I hadn’t seen him before in the 40+ years that I’ve been a big fan. 🤦🏼♀️
If all of our heroes aged as well as Gary, then we'd have a Robert Smith that we don't shoo our children away from. I'm so happy that both are still making amazing music, in any case!
It's brilliant that Gary is still evolving and he's now the professor of synth, having started as a journeyman when when the net and DIY media were pure alien. Pat Martin(Suffolk) is one of the very best Numan Tributes,if youve not luck enough to see the real thing.

It's interesting that in the early 80's I became hooked on Synth Rock because of "Cars". Then Trent Reznor of NIN comes along and deepens my affinity for the genre. Gary writes this Gem and I can hear the influence they've both had on each other. Chart topper to be sure. Well done Gary.
Gary needs to be recognized as a "true" artist. In his 60's and look at him. Amazing talent that only gets better and better over time. He's far too underrated. Give this guy an award or medal or something.
@@zimriel I agree about the "fakery" in the whole awards thing. I was meaning that Gary is so underrated that it kind of sucks. He is so much more deserving of recognition then a lot of the phoney artist now a days who are recognized and just aren't deserving of said recognition. Pisses me off in a way.
@@maxpower8916 I get it. I say to some friends that Numan deserves as much, or more credit, than kanye. He is a musican, vocalist, and producer, as he's been revolutionary and inspiring in all 3. It it wasn't for him, Trent Reznor may not have made Pretty Hate MAchine. He's basically invented two music genres. He's defied all convention. Was honest about mental health when it was heavily stigmatized. He has come back from the ashes and become a great huband, father, and one of the few to be so expressive at this age. David Bowie, in the same league as Gary Numan. Hell of a thing. His music is dark, haunting, relatable to the young and older. His genre is his own. Since digging out of depression, his music has not suffered like what happens to other artists that aren't starving anymore. He's more expressive than when he was a kid, basically, being awkward and shy singing "cars". This man is actually a wholesome 3rd act, and has remained humble. He constantly stops to talk to fans on the street. He's a nice guy and cares. I am sad that his dad took control of his life after he got popular in '79. After pleasure principle, what he was working on when his dad began to manage him, he didn't do anything notable until he was on his own again. Since, it's been one long rise to the top.

First impression is very good. It's very Savage-sounding but hey, to me Gary Numan found a magic formula with Savage and he really doesn't need to change his sound much now. This sound works perfect for me, the emotions work and the video is also well done, it has impact.
@@mdp720 I was thinking the same, especially after re-watching, 'I Am Dust'. No complaints here. I loved the other two albums and have already pre-ordered this one.
I've been listening to you since 1979. I had Replicas and The Pleasure Principal on vinyl then and I wore them both out, I played them so much. The synths in this tune take me back to those times. This is like a cousin of "Films". Can't wait for the album. Thank you Gary.
I cannot put into words what Numan’s music does for me, the feeling it generates cannot be replicated by anything else. Truly mind blowing every damn time!
Schteevee I know what you're saying. Maybe not the same feeling you're referring to, but I have found some obscure electronic artists where the odd song has generated those spine tingly feelings with powerful/beautiful synths but nobody comes close to the consistency of those "oh fuck yes!" moments (for me 1:19 is one of them) Gary Numan comes up with again and again since I started listening in the 70's. He really knows his audience doesn't he ! I wonder when he's playing around on his synths and hits on something like that he has the same 'fuck yeah!' feeling about the sounds as I/others do or because it's just something he's really good at and has done a million times, he has pride as anyone would in creating something that millions of people love but doesn't have the same feelings of 'wow' because he knows how the magic is made and it's his own creation and voice he's listening to when a song is completed. I'd love to be able to ask him about that lol
I remember reading that he had a photo of all his old stunt pilot friends, and there came a point when the dead ones outnumbered the living, so he stopped flying. That might be why he has survived to 62 with his limbs intact.
Here I am, almost 56, been listening to NIN, Depeche Mode and the like and it's only NOW that I've listened to this and it's blown my mind. Wow. Wow, wow, wow. I can hear his influence in so many of the songs and bands I love listening to. I'm a bit slow off the mark, yes?
I've been a fan since 79 and I still feel like a giddy teenager when there is a new release or a pending tour. The music still gives me goosebumps both old and new. Thank you Gary for a lifetime of amazing music and fantastic memories. Long may it all continue .
After Savage (and having been a fan since the Tubeway Army days) I took a step back and haven't followed his career. The opening cords of this sounded 'samey' but I was wrong. The vocals and lyrics are superb. I hope the album is just as good. I'm officially eating humble pie right now. Lol.
i knew who gary numan was when i was 11 , 12 years old. listened as any young teenager would to his early stuff. i progressed to all kinds of music as i got older. im now 53. my taste in music got very heavy. n.i.n, rob zombie and more into black metal, metal etc...triptykon for one. heavy gothicy stuff. i didnt forget about gary but it wasnt until i went to see him in Berlin for my 50th birthday a few years ago that I was struck like a bolt of lightening when i heard this newer sound of his. I literally cried at the savage gig as it was the first time i ever saw him. It had a real tight hold on me ever since. i wasnt aware of the album jagged and all that lead to Savage, so i back tracked and was blown away by the sheer heaviness of his sound. I believe its always been in him and now this is the TRUE gary Numan all along. im looking forward to the new album and have been watching the videos so far. love it as always and gary you are a true star.

@@philiplewin7134 What an honour.
Gary Numan was years ahead of his time. I watched him as a child in the late 70's, and I'm still here now watching him. What an outstanding, innovative musician. He really was, and is, in a class all of his own. One word sums him up aptly, that word is, 'SUPERLATIVE.'
I bought Pleasure as a kid in 1980. I grew up with this music.

Such a distinctive , definitive sound .
My dad took me to see him when I was 16 in Glasgow ,We were denied at the door by the bouncer because of my age , my dad saw the guitarist (rob holiday) goto the tour bus , so he goes down and explains the situation , a few moments later me my mum my dad and my little sister are being escorted in to see the show !!! fantastic!
Very well said!
Nice words.. Same feeling.. 👌👌
Ah yes, thank you! Someone has finally found an apt description for that feeling. Well put mate!
That affectional universality presaged that of Goth, Industrial, and Trip-Hop. He was WAY ahead of his time.
Moved to tears, yes absolutely
Thought I was just wierd 😀
In my opinion the best artists keep producing because it comes from the soul. What they do is express what most of us can't. But we sure feel it in the "hook". This man is genius
According to the 'man himself, he kept producing music for years after it stopped coming from anywhere *near* the soul -- but then he found his path again and he once again believes in what he's doing. If you felt the "hook" even during the times that he didn't, though, I doubt that he would begrudge you that enjoyment...
For sure 😊
Yes, but...doesn't that mean it would *cost* them some soul, every time?
The rest of the song is very similar to Nine Inch Nails - Where is everybody
He is like a book you cannot put down until the last chapter is read when ever that is with life extension technologies, Gary may live forever now.
Trent reznor wouldn't exist without Gary Numan. The man's a legend and a pioneer
And he would agree 100%. He’s never shied away from citing Numan as a huge influence.

So much of an influence: definitely Type-O-Negative's integration of synthetic and instrumets, as well as Peter's vocal stylings.
Ofc he even invited him on his concerts

But where would industrial metal be without this man?
Are friends electric. This was my first single. Brought it home to Cologne from Southampton in 1979. 😍
@@sptony2718 There's a Fear Factory version of Cars? :o
Classy.
Also and quite amazingly his new music sounds fresh yet retains his original unique style.Unreal.
@@redpillnibbler4423 Agreed. You know it's him but it still sounds so fresh, respect to him.
Yup

That was before the release of his last album which to me felt like a well-deserved triumph for someone who has stuck with their chosen craft regardless of what the press had to say at any given time. So Thanks for that Gary, and congratulation on what sounds like another gem of an album. I hope your proud of this one too.

Sounds like The false world of Religion
The chours of this song is soooo catchy and beautiful, just like the one on the truck he did with Jarre, Here for you.
Take a trip to almost 22 years ago with Sacrifice: ua-cam.com/video/rvvc7J1-Hho/v-deo.html
Go back a bit further, to 1984, and here it in The Secret (about a minute in, after it gets out of its own way): ua-cam.com/video/fZgNWlbJJ4o/v-deo.html Compare the hanging note at 56 seconds into The Secret to the hanging note at @2:00 - @2:03 here.
Holy hell was that beautiful. Both Gary and Chris Corner have outdone themselves.
It is absolutely phenomenal,I don't know of any other who works as hard as Gary to get their music as good as it can be.
Something to look forward to in these tough times-can't wait!
Tough times? Wait for actual war with that comment.

I remember being eleven years old at a florida waterpark in the spring of 1980. The operators of the park had "Cars" playing on a continuous loop and I was soaking wet sliding down these plastic flumes having the time of my life. Thanks for a happy memory Gary.
40 years of listening to Gary Numan & being a loyal fan I can honestly say I thought his best days were behind him but over the last few decades he has proved me wrong on so many occasions & Today is another. This song captures not only the imagination but also the heart, an epic burst of everything rolled into one. Well done GN
Got the album on pre order. The guy is like a fine malt whisky, gets better with age. Come on Queenie. It's about time Gary got a Gong..... What a Legend.
My wife agrees 💯%. 👍
An alien will always remain cutting edge.
Gary, you’ve been at the forefront of it all. We are so fragile, but you provide sanctuary.
Gary Numan is the Godfather of Industrial music.
Gary still remains timeless ! I have followed him since 1979, and he still remains one of my favorite artist today !
I feel exactly the same, I've loved Gary since Are friends Electric and his music has just got better 😌
My father and I got to see and hear Gary sing this song at the Ace of Spades in Sacramento California only a few yards away.
I was hyped, beyond stoked! It was just like being in this video basically, but better than the video, so much louder and personal.
he's so badass it's hard to believe that this man is actually 62
being a badass has no age limit ;)
Hope for us old folks to still be relevant.
I remember reading that he had a photo of all his old stunt pilot friends, and there came a point when the dead ones outnumbered the living, so he stopped flying. That might be why he has survived to 62 with his limbs intact.
It's amazing what you can do with black hair dye and some trendy clothes.
@@peroduanippa Let's see how fit -you- are at 62, and if you could put as much energy into concerts as he does.
Perfectly said 👍👏👍
After Savage (and having been a fan since the Tubeway Army days) I took a step back and haven't followed his career. The opening cords of this sounded 'samey' but I was wrong. The vocals and lyrics are superb. I hope the album is just as good. I'm officially eating humble pie right now. Lol.
Enjoy! Only kidding.
How does the pie taste? JK! 😋🤣😋
i knew who gary numan was when i was 11 , 12 years old. listened as any young teenager would to his early stuff. i progressed to all kinds of music as i got older. im now 53. my taste in music got very heavy. n.i.n, rob zombie and more into black metal, metal etc...triptykon for one. heavy gothicy stuff. i didnt forget about gary but it wasnt until i went to see him in Berlin for my 50th birthday a few years ago that I was struck like a bolt of lightening when i heard this newer sound of his.
Absolutely astounding that with every release a new look into what makes him the godfather of electronic music... Gary you are Amazing!!!
Gary is like Wine and Whiskey:
He gets better with age.
So does Cheese
I think he gets more gothic
no he isnt
Or, in a non-alcoholic analogy.. like cheese!
Darkest. Strongest. Coolest.
Numan is the best he looks and sounds fantastic this track is completely amazing dark as hell can't wait for the album I salute you NUMAN
Awesomely dark and powerful. Been a fan since 79 and it’s still brilliant.
He looks pretty good for 65. 45 years since Replicas came out.
Extremely dark haunting and TOTALLY FABULOUS
over 40 years such high level music, from are friends electric to this on, thanks Gary for this part in my life !
So glad your still playing gary💓🙏🏾🎹 peace🎹🔉🎶
He is awesome. He gets better as he ages. Don’t stop Gary your awesome. 😅
Numan the best, I wait album, fan since1980 😀
He's the God Father of industrial. I'm 53 and still listening. He just gets better with time.
wow, just fucking wow, Gary "the man" has aged like a fine wine, this the best news I heard in over a year and the best new music I heard since god knows when
Exceot you barely notice him aging
And people wonder why he's my all-time favorite singer! LOVE THIS!!!!
Gary's like a fine wine...the older he gets the better he is. The older I get, the more I appreciate that.
Half way through I realized I hadn’t taken a breath since it started. Brilliant. 🖤
Get some water my friend! 🚰
46 years in the game, doing stuff fresher than people 46 mins in game. Unreal.
Gary……. I hope this grabs your attention. Don’t know to express what hasn’t been expressed a million times before, but thank you for keeping the art of music alive, fresh and desirable✌🏻. A fan till I part this world. Much love front my wife and myself 🖤🤍🖤🤍🖤
The first record I ever bought of any kind was his “Cars” in 1979. I was 11 years old. Still love it.
