Same. Although, I will say that people should take advantage of those first few weeks of college, because during those first few weeks, you're all kind of in the same boat. You're all trying to find your people and figure out how to exist in this new world. Yes, friendship takes work, but there'll never be an easier time to do it than those first few weeks of college when everyone around you is also looking for friends.

Skittles Army idk if it’s just me but we don’t have AP classes, we split it into “academic” or “applied”, but it doesn’t seem to be as intense as you guys?? Also we have four classes each semester, unless you take online or night school or something. We also don’t really do “GPA”, because we don’t have AP classes, it’s literally just an average. Also for uni, we don’t really need to write essays here. Some programs require supplementary applications, but that’s usually just “answer these questions in 500 words each”

Ashlee Dixon - Some of us don't give a fuck. I have 2 college degrees and refuse to use either one for personal reasons. I will never accept any job that requires a degree. I'm all about naked options trading. People don't like it because it involves so much risk but what they don't understand is that all of life is a gamble. Everytime you get behind the wheel of a car you're gambling on possibly having a wreck. Everytime you go out in public you gamble on being shot. To work a job is to gamble on getting fired and it really doesn't matter if you're good at your job. They could always turn against you for some stupid reason. If you think you're safer by avoiding the stock market think again. All of life is a gamble. Fuck college. Fuck all jobs - including the so-called 'good' jobs. Options trading is the way to go. For me, it's the only way. I have unlimited profit potential, etc. I always rufused to kiss ass to get ahead. I don't value social status. I'm not into any of that. So, if you don't kiss ass to get ahead or use a college degree there's only one option left for success - you have to become good at taking calculated risks. That's what I did. If it weren't for options trading, I'd probably be driving an 18 wheeler and I'd be perfectly fine with that. That's my idea of a 'good' job.

started ugly crying during this so hard my chest hurt.
im 20 and currently in my junior year. i do like learning, i really do, but my mental health has been shit for years, and it's made enjoying my time in college virtually impossible. i wish i could feel motivated or excited about my classes. they're classes i would enjoy, but my brain is too broken to let me be excited about much at all. so my time at college has just been me trying to scrape by. and i don't even know why; to get a degree so i can get a job i guess. i know what i want to do in life and i know what my dream job would be and i know that i could probably get there but i don't know what the point is bc honestly i'll probably have killed myself before i make it to the finish line. i wanted college to be exciting, i wanted my purpose here to purely be to learn and to enjoy education for what's probably the last time. but instead my grades are dropping every quarter i stay here because i cant resurrect my brain enough to make me care or try. i feel like i've lost something important, or i'm in the process of losing it, but i'm already grieving.

@@Emma-tf9jg we have a lot of different names for things, but also we generally pay per subject, not per semester, and fast-tracking your graduation isn't really recommended by a lot of universities!! also the general atmosphere and vibe of most campuses are WAY different- most people don't live in dorms for a start, they just travel from home. it's more like high school part 2 for a lot of us.

  • @arelyandrea
    @arelyandrea 5 років тому +563

As a gal going into her senior year of engineering:
your gpa DOES matter!! try to stay above a 3.0! (3.5 if grad school is in your plans) ALSO PLEASE APPLY FOR INTERNSHIPS/CO-OPS/RESEARCH EXPERIENCES!!
    edit to clarify:
    - I’m giving my advice bc STEM degrees are different so I hope I can help
    - 3.0/4.0 is a B (80%) average at my school
    - obviously your gpa is not THE most important thing ever but in my experience, STEM careers do consider your gpa and I’ve heard some may even ask for transcripts when you apply for a job.
    - internships and other real world experience will most likely matter more however, it is unlikely that you will be offered an internship if your gpa is not at least a 3.0 as most of the ones I’ve seen have that as the minimum requirement!
here’s some more advice in case anyone cares:
    - try to get into research your second semester sophomore year. at that point your gpa will probably be pretty good and you’ll be able to gauge early on if you like research
    - it’s completely okay if you can’t graduate early or even on time, a lot of people take a bit longer and that’s okay!
    - PLEASE go to office hours if you’re having trouble. even if you’re not tbh, go and ask a couple of simple questions so you can meet your profs
    - don’t be afraid to email profs either, they expect you to
    - you are not the only one struggling! it’s okay if you are not getting the subject immediately
    - idk I used to study at night all the time but last semester my friend and I would get together at 8am and study before class (~11am) and it was way less stressful and more productive
    - all nighters are necessary sometimes but try to limit them as much as possible and don’t do them two nights in a row lol
    - join a club/organization that has nothing to do with your major. it’s fun and you’ll make friends who study really different things!

  • @andreawyant5512
    @andreawyant5512 5 років тому +347

As someone with an engineering degree, I can confidently say that five years later and with a solid resume, I'm still asked during interviews and specific applications what my GPA was. It does matter.
As someone who also has campus recruitment and interviewing experience for Fortune 500 companies, I can also say certain jobs actually view it negatively if your GPA is too high, as it reflects the potential that you spent all of your time studying and not socializing, which can be detrimental in certain leadership or teamwork environments. Mid 3's (at least a 3.2, less than 4.0) seems to be the best target GPA to go for if you're unsure of what you want to do post-graduation, especially for a tech field. Serious engineering jobs and grad schools often won't look at you if you do not have at least a 3.2, so it's all about balance and some pre-planning. Moral of the story, do your best, but don't waste your time being hung up that you got a B (or even a D) in a single class when the rest of your grades are solid. If anything, you're doing yourself a favor.
D's get Degrees, my friends. But too many and they also may not get their first job pick.

Ashley was ready bc she knew what she wanted and she knows her future. my sister was looking at maybe seven years of self study and exams to become an actuary with her statistics degree. she didn't know what she wanted and she suffered bc of it. she had mental breakdowns about being rushed through the school system, forcing herself to take calculus in high school (okay i might be wrong but doesn't everyone do this) and anyways not her best time. that said her birthday is in early september so she is already a year younger approx than all the other people in her graduating class. but anyways, just. be ready. and know when you're not. know why, and know how its going to be okay.

Better to switch majors and graduate a bit later than to stick to a major you didn't like or won't pay out (:

I have many more friends in college than in high school. The important thing to remember is friends won't just fall into your lap in college. Many people in high school have had the same friends for years and have never really had to work at making friends but you start fresh when you go to college. I met most of my friends by putting myself out there in really uncomfortable situations. I went to parties by myself to make friends, joined clubs where I didn't know anyone, and talked to random students around campus. I was never popular in k-12 so I knew extra effort was needed so I could find friends and be happy. The absolute worst thing that can happen when you talk to new people is that they won't want to be your friend and then you are simply in the same position you were before. Please don't give up if you feel lonely when you start college. Many people need some time to transition to the new environment and most people are feeling the same anxiety that you are, they are just keeping it to themselves. You will find your people eventually even if it takes you a bit longer. If you are really feeling hopeless try talking to an on campus counselor. If you are close with your roommate ask if you can tag along with them to some campus events. If you live close to your hometown fight the temptation to go home on the weekend to visit your high school friends. Weekends are a great time to meet people on campus and you don't want to miss out. It also might be a good idea to join some clubs or rush a sorority. These will provide a more structured environment to make friends and might be helpful if you are a more introverted person. Most importantly remember that taking risks can often pay off when it comes to making friends. Ask that kid you talk to in class to get coffee with you, sit at a new table at lunch, introduce yourself to your neighbors. I wish you the best of luck!

Dank lu Lucas the content doesn’t feel difficult (at least with the subjects I did) but it’s the sheer amount and detail you need to know about each subject that’s hard! Also with essay subjects, you really need to practice writing essays and analysing good ones to really get that technique down!

ChemE major. There's absolutely no way that I would be able to graduate in anything under 4 years. And gpa isn't a huge deal unless you're wanting to go to grad school.

When you're an overwhelmed senior in high school on the verge of tears balancing:
    - Summer hw
    - Studying for SAT
    - Studying for ACT
    - Different IB requirements (CAS hours wtf)
    - College applications
    - College essays
    - Preparing for the upcoming school year
    - Panic

    - Crippling self-doubt
