Very helpful video, thanks. for those in metric countries, the Owner's manual says 2.6 litres without filter replacement, 2.8 Litres with filter replacement, 3.2 litres for a completely dry engine. Oil chosen depends on the temperature range where you will be using it. 20w50 is good for 5-50 degrees C. 10W40 will do -10 to 45 degrees C. Since the engine oil also lube's the clutch, do not use oils with a diesel spec of "CD" or labelled "Energy Conserving II"
Let me start by saying... I'm a drummer. Yes, I know. But your video was spot on. I did buy the tools, and did not use synthetic oil. But, for me it was smooth sailing. I have a 2000 650 with only 7000 miles on it. I bought it used with 5000 miles in 2003. So I obviously do not ride much. I even put my own tires on it this week with another video on yt. You saved me some money. And my bride who I call, yes dear, is very happy. Shine on...
I was locked in with the Priest, then to hear Fade To Black, man your playlist must be completely awesome. And thanks for this tutorial, really was excellent.
Just purchase a V-star 650 and I am trying to get familiar with it. Your video sure did wonders for my confidence in doing it my self specially with the tough economic times... Thank you... Very helpful information
Thanks, great video! Without people like yourself I would be broke spending money at the shop or fixing the problems of doing it myself without any knowledge. Thanks again, keep posting!
thank you for taking the time to do this very helpful video. I have been taking my 650 v star to the dealership because they told me the exhaust would have to be removed. Will be doing it myself from now on.
Thanks for the video...I've changed the oil in my VStar 650 once and wanted a refresher before I do it again. Figured I would comment because you mentioned synthetic and a Jetta. We have the 650, Synthetic and Jetta in common. My Jetta is an 06 with the 2.5 liter engine. Nothing but synthetic since it was brand new, and with 190,000 miles on it, it still runs like a DREAM. Excellent highway car.
Dude Thank You So Very Much! I looked forever on Google and Ask and all they wanted to do was sell me something. Your vid answered 3 of my questions. Thank you!
Thanks for the great video. FYI - Pg 8-2 of the owners manual says: Quantity (Oil) Without oil filter element replacement 2.8 US Quarts With oil filter element replacement 3.0 US Quarts Total amount (dry engine) 3.4 US Quarts
thank you . I changed my yesterday. only problem was that I had troubble with one of the screws in the cover peice. other then that went like clock work. thank you again.
+Shikhanshu Agarwal Not nearly as simple as a fully exposed filter... but I agree, it doesn't seem too heinous, especially if you don't drive the hell out of your bike.
Thanks for the video. I want to change my oil myself, but I don't have a stand. Of course, as you know, there's no center stand on the V*Star. But I know after watching your video I can do it. :) I changed the oil in my truck all the time when I was younger. Power to the Chicks!
i totally agree. my bike calls for 2.96 quarts which is 94.7 ounces, since there is 96 ounces to 3 quarts the difference is 1.3 ounces, even less for you. there is no way that could be harmful especially considering the residual oil left over in the containers. love the foil idea, i suggest placing it there before running the engine, i burnt myself, haha.
Jim, Thanks for the video. just got a V-Star and never knew about the sight glass. To me 2.7 sounds like 3 Qts to me. I'll also change the rear dif oil at the same time. Thx again and good riding.
Thanks a bunch for the video. This is just what I needed. BTW I seem to have a leak on the bottom of the bike. It could be the filler plug but is there anything else that can leak from under there? She has 34k on her 650 2000 v-star
thanks! you saved me alot of time! i bought one of these recently and had never changed it yet and was curious, i am fairly good "driveway mechanic" so i was just gonna start tearing into things and see what happens lol but now i dont have to worry about it, time you already saved me- i figured the cosmetic cap was where the filter was i would have been sweating when i got it off and found more bolts lol
thanks for the tutoral. I just bought one last fall and am getting ready to do my first oil change. where on the glass is the level supposed to be? Also, is the engine and transmission oil the same on this bike? I have read about this bike having a "wet clutch" whatever that means
Hey Jimmy thanks for the video. I just bought a 2009 650 vstar. The owner said he changed the oil at 2,000 miles. Other than that, no maintenance has been done. This is my first motorcycle and I was wondering if there is anything else that needs to be done - Brakes/fluids, etc?
Thanks dude, this was a quality video, thanks for the time to do this. I do have a question, I have a 09 V Star 950 is this about the same way to change the oil in it? I have a bad back, is this something I could do or have it done in your opinion. Again thanks for taking the time to post this, very helpful.
I have a couple of mods on my bike that made the oil change a little more difficult than the one in the video. First, I have the J-slam which lowers the bike about 4" at the rear fender. Because of this, I couldn't get leverage to remove the drain plug or get my pan (which is like the one in the video) under the bike. I had to lift the rear a bit with a jack to get under there.
hey this was a great help i did it. but one question the little lock washer thing they gave me to put on the oil plug you didn't show how to replace it . How to get it off and which way it goes could you show that please thank you
well I found out myself that you dudes need to spring for a 950...lol, mine has an outside oil filter just like a car, easy to get to and pretty easy to change the oil. So unless you like the 650, move on up to a 950....
You should remind everyone to drain the oil with the engine hot but to let it get STONE COLD before changing the oil filter. If you don't, you risk stripping the female threads when you remove the stainless steel bolts from the aluminum housing. That's what happened to me when I followed the video exactly.
Wasn't bad on my Vstar650. They have to get a short 17, or have a lift, or they can lay the bike down on a set of tires in order to break the plug loose. Someone torqued mine tight so I had a fun time getting it loose.
It says next to the glass it takes 2600cm3 witch is the same as 2600 ml and each quart has 946 ml in it so The best thing to do is pour the first 2 quarts in witch equals 1,892 ml so you just need 708 ml out of the last one and if you look at the side of the oil bottle there is a line that reads 700 ml so what I did was pour out some of the oil in to an open bottle of oil till it was at the 700 line
Alnost thw same as my '11 950 V star except the placemwnt of the oil filter. Mine is external up front down bt the bottom. Going with K&N in my next change.
Ive changed to a new o ring, i have tried everything and i cant get my oil filter cap to stop seaping. I used an aftermarket filter. I can ride it and let it sit and it will dribble a tiny little dribble, any idea? please help.
The oil level should be half way up the glass when the bike is level it's about 2 3/4 quarts for the 650 with a filter change. As for the wet clutch, the engine oil and transmission oil are the same, you change the oil you are changing both. Don't use standard motor oil it will ruin your clutch, you should only use oil made for bikes.
Sorry, Meant to say " you can never over-change your oil. 3,000 miles is the key. In my opinion extended oil drain intervals are for ideal conditions for an engine. No one drives in ideal conditions. I hate sludge buildup in any engine. Changing oil my way will keep your engine protected and clean inside.
Are you using an o-ring or metal compression ring on your drain plug? Didn't see either in your list of items needed at the beginning but wanted to double check.
How did you get the bike up on the lift with the carpet cover? I need to change the oil in mine, but I don't have a lift, will I need one? Also I would like to ask do I really need to take it to a dealer for the valve clearance checks? This will be the 600 mile oil change, and the dealerships want an arm and a leg to change the oil.and adjust for clearances. This is a very informational video, Thanks Ride Safe
Great video! You should consider using Amsoil. Top of the line when it comes to synthetics. Check out there motorcyle tests on youtube as well as there vehicle stats. Great stuff I run it in everything I own. Im also a dealer. Thanks for the video. Lots of help.
Any tips as to how to get a drain plug off that's been torqued on too tight? Having a world of trouble and don't want to strip it (yes I'm trying to turn it counterclockwise)
those bolts too hold the cover on are just thumb tight right? i warpped one cap and have another now, but it is used. I have never had this much trouble out of a bike before. I never tightened any tighter than i do on any of the other bikes i have had, but anyways it would squeeze a drop out if i ride it a long ways.
Thanks for youtube clip, it helped me a lot. When I should start my own dragster ( it stood still for a couple of years), the petrol run over into the overflow pipe leading down to the front cylinder. Anyone here know what the problem might be? Grateful for all the help I can get :)
I followed your steps and I must say that my 1st oil change was an success!! Thanks!!
Very helpful video, thanks. for those in metric countries, the Owner's manual says 2.6 litres without filter replacement, 2.8 Litres with filter replacement, 3.2 litres for a completely dry engine. Just finished changing the oil on mine. I am sure I just saved quite a bit money doing it myself.Thank you for making this video.
thank you for taking the time to do this very helpful video. I have been taking my 650 v star to the dealership because they told me the exhaust would have to be removed. Will be doing it myself from now on.
I just bought a 2009 Yamaha V Star 650 and this video helped me. Thanks
Perfect video . Sounds like 4 beers and it's a done deal . I'd dump all 3 till most of it's out then take it for a ride and see where it's at
Thanks for the video...I've changed the oil in my VStar 650 once and wanted a refresher before I do it again. Figured I would comment because you mentioned synthetic and a Jetta. Full synthetic is the best I have 185k on my truck and no problems at all . Nice to see you putting it in the Vstar.
Great video; very detailed and made it look so easy. Saved me over $50 by doing it myself.
Thanks dude a helpful video for when I forgot which way that oil filter went in...
Dude Thank You So Very Much! I looked forever on Google and Ask and all they wanted to do was sell me something. Your vid answered 3 of my questions. Thank you!
This is a great video. I love the way that all the steps are touched on and shown in the video. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the great video. FYI - Pg 8-2 of the owners manual says:

who the hell said V-star oil change is a PITA? its as simple as it gets.. thanks a bunch for the great video!
+Shikhanshu Agarwal Not nearly as simple as a fully exposed filter... but I agree, it doesn't seem too heinous, especially if you don't drive the hell out of your bike.
I like the stock mirrors on y V-Star 650 Classic. They provide an excellent rearward view, and they don't move around.
Great video, thanks soooo much. Love the Metallica in tje background fyi.
Thanks for the video. I want to change my oil myself, but I don't have a stand. Of course, as you know, there's no center stand on the V*Star. But I know after watching your video I can do it. :) I changed the oil in my truck all the time when I was younger. Power to the Chicks!
Good camera work one handed. And very informitive. Look to do first motorcycle oil change. Thanks
I really appreciated the video. It was very helpful. It was my first time changing my oil and oil filter. GOD BLESS you and your lovely family :)
Great video, very helpful. My friend just purchased this bike and asked me to change the oil. Thanks for uploading it.
This video is ridiculously helpful. Thank you so much for taking your time to make this and post it.
i forgot to say the parts cost me $30.00 and you save me $179.00. thanks again
Very informative. In today's economy, we could all stand to save a little money on oil changes.
i totally agree. my bike calls for 2.96 quarts which is 94.7 ounces, since there is 96 ounces to 3 quarts the difference is 1.3 ounces, even less for you. there is no way that could be harmful especially considering the residual oil left over in the containers.

Jim,
Thanks for the video. just got a V-Star and never knew about the sight glass. To me 2.7 sounds like 3 Qts to me. I'll also change the rear dif oil at the same time. Thx again and good riding.
Three quarts is perfect.
Wisdom!
Thanks a bunch for the video. This is just what I needed. BTW I seem to have a leak on the bottom of the bike. It could be the filler plug but is there anything else that can leak from under there? She has 34k on her 650 2000 v-star
Thanks for the video! Also, loving the Priest playing in the background!
Hey bro, that little ring went to your drain plug. Great video!
Great vid. First oil change on my new (to me) vstar went great thanks to this! Thanks very much!
I use Mobil-1 in everything I own. At 3,000 miles, it's dumped. Some may say its a waste, I call it good insurance.
change my oil a few days ago, oh yeah I use your video as a guide. Thanx !
thanks! you saved me alot of time! i bought one of these recently and had never changed it yet and was curious, i am fairly good "driveway mechanic" so i was just gonna start tearing into things and see what happens lol but now i dont have to worry about it, time you already saved me- i figured the cosmetic cap was where the filter was i would have been sweating when i got it off and found more bolts lol

Heck the yamaha dealership told me 3 quarts. im gonna put 2 and half and start checking!
Awesome video thank you so much for showing us how do the job done the right way, I will change mine this coming weekend wish me luck!!! Lol
Good video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
thank you, that is a great video. How many miles you run on mobil synthtic oil?
Thanks so much! That was simple. quick and explained well.
Thanks dude, this was a quality video, thanks for the time to do this. I do have a question, I have a 09 V Star 950 is this about the same way to change the oil in it?

buy you beer? thats hilarious! thanks for the video. looking into getting 2006 dragstar 650 in the next couple of days.
i'm 5'10" 180 and this thing carrys me just fine
hey this was a great help i did it. but one question the little lock washer thing they gave me to put on the oil plug you didn't show how to replace it . How to get it off and which way it goes could you show that please thank you
Great video will be doing my 1st oil change this Friday!

Great video, about to go try it out feeling confident. I went with the same oil as you so we'll see how she takes it.
Wasn't bad on my Vstar650. They have to get a short 17, or have a lift, or they can lay the bike down on a set of tires in order to break the plug loose. Someone torqued mine tight so I had a fun time getting it loose.
Good video straight to the point no B.S.!
It's a home made jack to lift the back wheel off the ground and keep the bike level
do you have a link to build the home made jack?
How do you get the wood under that? Im going to have to use that.
Shouldn't your handlebars be tilted for more stability?
On the 650 you don't have to remove the exhaust. The 1100 is the model you have to remove the exhaust to do an oil change on.
I was told there would be no math...
thank you for this helpful video. very clear details and useful. thanks again.
Alnost thw same as my '11 950 V star except the placemwnt of the oil filter. Mine is external up front down bt the bottom. Going with K&N in my next change.
Showing the direction of how to loosen the drain bolt would have been good
Ive changed to a new o ring, i have tried everything and i cant get my oil filter cap to stop seaping. I used an aftermarket filter. I can ride it and let it sit and it will dribble a tiny little dribble, any idea? please help.
I have the tools to do the oil change , but I was trying to loose the oil drain plug but it is too tight , any advice ? thank you
Very helpful. Thanks for taking the time!
thankyou, this sure helped me out a lot

Thank you sir, very helpful!
Thanks from France !
Great vid! Does the fill cap have a O ring on it? Thanks
Can you make a video on how to make the home made jack?
