Kurt just a little advise mate, they shouldn't be that hungry. Also confident pigeons aren't affected by falcons, so when they are that hungry their minds are on the food due to hunger instead of flying. When you feed lite you must give them all they can eat if feeding once a day. Indicator is feed them until 1/3 go to water then stop adding food. Hungry pigeons can't concentrate on their surroundings outside. I raced for years with falcon attacks every 2nd day, confident pigeons actually chase falcons away 💯. The key to confidence for them is feed correctly.
over the 3 years i have tried everything i can think of, once they take a belting every day, especially as ybs it messes with them mentally big time regardless. When your getting belt up your confidence can be reduced pretty fast. see how the next few weeks pan out
Post up a video of “your” pigeons chasing falcons away. I wanna see. Lol But feed wise is a 50/50 correct. Because mainly, you only need to feed them to where they start to break off and stop eating. Is when you take the food away from them. Never leave them pecking at their food for fun. And if you’re on the starving challenge to get your birds in when you call, so they get used to the call, then he’s doing it correctly for loft flying. You keep them hungry so they come back when called. Otherwise in most cases, they ignore the call and you actually lose more birds to bop because they’re too focused on flying and not coming home. 🤷
fine line, i dont like them on the ground and they must come in when i call like you said the BOP does get them, generally thats when the goshawks step in and get the "ground peckers" if i lived in the city would be much easier but here we are atm lol
@@ManeyPigeons It is a fine line and not the same for everyone. Some flocks handle bop better than others, but also in some places the bop are actually just better. I was very “close” to a female peregrine falcon in my area. I knew her well because of the years of harassment. She was a true killer and extremely good at it. Some people are battling Cooper’s hawks or sharp shinned hawks and will give advice for those. It’s not the same. Fat pigeons are slow, starving pigeons don’t think right…fine line indeed.
Hi Kurt , if u wanna get the birds loft flying longer drop the barley right back. Trust me I made the same mistake , too much barely the birds have no energy to fly. Pigeons can’t digest barley hence why it flushes them out and goes through so fast which means they don’t absorb the carbs from it. Trying to get the birds light through high barley only works for Frank McLaughlin as he doesn’t loft fly but he tosses 30-40 miles Tuesday and 80 miles Thursday so his birds are fit through tossing. U can keep birds light with low barley if u have all the other grains percentages right. That takes time to play with but once it’s nailed your birds will start rocking. Your birds flying so low because they don’t have enough energy and don’t really want to fly hence the extremely fast trapping. There starving because barley is so high. Hope this helps you a little 😊
Brendon is right! If you feed like frank .. you need to train like frank .. frank even says it .. and honestly Kurt .. that’s what I would be doing .. don’t sweat not loft flying .. and don’t worry about the first race .. remember you want to feed like frank .. then train like frank 😊
Join the the club Kurt,we have just as many Falcons up here in Perth.I have lost 20 birds in month. And thats from training alone.Pigeon racing is dieing here because of to many Falcons in WA.
Hi i live in the UK i agree with what you say about feeding light mixture but i disagree about the falcon part in my experience all pigeons are spooked my them when they are flying together they have more confidence and that puts the falcons off but I've never seen any pigeons chasing falcons.
The only pigeons I've ever seen chase BOPs are Doneks, but the good ones will dive on anything with wings out of pure instinct, so they're not really chasing them, per say.
Agree they're underfed.Feed a light diet but not all barley-10% is sufficient. The birds can't concentrate on the falcons if they're distracted by the hunger.Cut the colours in the kit....u'll find deep chequers/greasy blues r the best % survivors over rough terrain. It'll b a hard path as u need constant numbers to keep up with predation and racing. The birds need to be 100% every single day....one off day n they get taken.Wish u the best.
Succes. Leuke video’s van je. Groetjes Walther (Nederland)
it is odd yours seem to go low when the falcon comes around mine always flew so high it was hard to see them, they just keep going higher n higher to stay above hawks n falcons.and mine always have food.
If your feeding regime supplies a lot more energy the birds will train very much better around the loft.. I am not convinced that those are perigrins attacking your team of birds. Perigrins attack from height mainly. Why dont you build a falcon trap and have them relocated elsewhwere? Unless you make a plan they will just get more bold and even attack the birds in the loft through the trap.
You cant get fit on a feed of lettuce, you need some pasta and steak to develop muscles and fitness. Dont feed so light honestly, the weather is wetter, colder and windier, your birds are burning energy just sitting on the perch of a night to keep warmer. Feed them more and heavier, proper race mix. They look like they are starving 😮
When I used to loft fly my birds I never feed them prior to them flying , feeding creates problems when you want them in the loft , they will fly and sit around on roofs and power poles and even some will stay out and go in the next day , feeding before their loft fly is a bad idea in my opinion , you will learn probably the hard way lol , after flying and they look like wanting to go in rattle a tin with feed in it and put their feed in then they will go in as long as they are hungry and you haven’t fed them before letting them out , racing and feeding is different as distance goes on. Hope I have helped in some way other flyers may have a different approach.
When I was still flying Rollers, my Peregrine was so bad that she would hit them 3 feet off the ground as they came out the kitbox door and on a couple of ocassions even went completely to ground after knocking them down.

I beg to differ , he hasn’t been flying them hardly at all ,he said that at the start , can’t expect them to fly when they haven’t been getting out , with more loft flys yes they will fly longer but don’t expect long flying when they haven’t had the chance to fly , fair dinkom dude.

Kurt if you can get them race fit by training two or three times per week you won't need to Loft fly during the race season your young ones will bee the problem here we don't race young and old together best of luck you will need it with them falcons
Your birds look a little too hungry you'll have a hard time with them wanting to exercise youngbirds need all they can eat high energy seeds like whole corn and safflower they are still growing and maturing also its better that they have enough fuel to get home from a race or training toss then to run out of gas and not be able to fly the rest of the way home.

Maybe you should not race this year and just continue to loft fly the birds and toss them and see how your losses are, eventually you will have a strong pack of birds that is able to outrun and outsmart the falcons, it will take time but it can be done. Your birds need to adapt to your surroundings/environment. The ones that adapt will teach the younger ones as well of how to be more allert for falcon attacks as well. So I would suggest continue breeding and let the falcons take out the "weaker ones". You will surely by next year this time have a strong pack of birds that the falcons won't be able to catch. Also I don't literally mean "weaker" birds but maybe birds that are more alert and able to outsmart the falcons, iv seen alot of fanciers do it that way here in South Africa. Also only you will know by handling your birds if they getting too much or too little feed, birds are good at acting hungry. Birds need to be lightweight in order to fly well. Heavy birds don't win races and easier for falcons to catch. Kind regards,
Kurt, your previous home videos were fantastic with your colours, I think the same stick to one lofts and do massive flock of colours and just enjoy mate. I gave racing up and now absolutely enjoy my birds more they still fly around the loft yeah they get chased by the falcon daily but they are to smart for the falcon he gets one every week but I’m breeding so not really fussed with a young family just enjoy your birds
Unfortunately you can feed what you like keep the very best birds and you are totally wasting your time. When you're living in high hawk population areas the birds never settle or fly well. Obviously feeding food more suitable for cage birds will stop the birds from coming into form but looking at videos of how Asian people deal with such problems could help.
Thats a good tip. I am racing in the Nederland. We have al cants off predator birds. My pigeons get 2 times a Day feed. As 2 a 3 pigeons stop eating get a drink i stop geving feed. Thats the feed in the 19.00 in the evning .in the morning the get 1 hand for 10 pigeons. The pigeons will training very beter. Wenn the pigeons training well the predator bird have a little charge to get them
What’s up Manny, don’t you have crows or ravens around there,, if yes u should feed them,, i fly in California, I had the same problem with hawks, ,but since I started to feed the crows they hang around and take care of hawks,, seriously bro it’s been a while I had a hawk arrack, hawks still comes but from the crow noise I can tell one is around even I haven seen them,,, crows take care of them every time,, for some reason they hate hawks,,, when one is in the territory crows won’t stop until they chase it away,,
Kurt just enjoy the birds flying thers nothing you can do if you keep loft flying your birds will adjust to the falcon and the best birds will stay at home in the loft😢
