After the last time we let the pigeons out flying we had to deal with the larger kite type hawks and now this time the peregrine falcon is ready soon as we open the door to the pigeon loft!
What a crazy time and times going ahead we are dealing with!

Hi Kurt, hope all your birds made it back safely. I am going through a similar problem. I lost a couple of my high flyers to hawks. They a pretty smart and they singled out the young and inexperienced ones and grabbed them in the air and flew away. I can't afford to lose any more so not letting my birds fly until the hawk season is over. Good luck with your birds.
      Cheers

    Idea for a hawk trap:
    Fake pigeon on a box
Hawk dive bomb attacks fake pigeon and both ends up in the box
The box being build in such a way, that a bird can't escape it.

@@ManeyPigeons There is a similar trap used in the falconry community called the dho-gazzo trap. It consists of 3 poles that are driven into the ground the have a net spread taut in between the poles. You put a bait bird on the side of the net and when the falcon dive bombs the bird, the momentum carries him into the net. Then the net has a drawstring around the edge like a laundry bag so it will get tangled up in there. The net is attached to a weight so the falcon does not have a net shroud about on his head.
Unfortunately, the trap requires a live bait bird but there is a high probability that the bird does not get killed.
      Hopes this helps Kurt.

It is illegal to trap, injure or kill falcons or any other predatory birds in Australia

    • @jettking7475
      @jettking7475 3 роки тому

@@BillyYobboTee Same in North America it's illegal to trap or kill a predatory bird such as a falcon, hawk, eagle in Canada or USA. However, unless you work for conservation and are a veterinarian and trapping the bird to bring it in for bloodwork, and nutritution workup and licensed to do so that they can keep track of which birds are in good migratory health. Believe it or not even without microchips they know which birds, animals are what, who, where, by habitats and behaviors. It's just what species do, it's where you will find them. This is why we license hunters, and we have culls when some species get out of hand and breed way over the land can handle. That's why there is difference between Animal Welfare, and Animal Rights Activists. An Animal Rights Activist is too far off left field and a Welfare Advocate knows we need a balance.

Hi from Morocco, i think you can try to use "Greifvogel Abwehrspray" The spray can be used directly on the pigeon or the poultry. Thanks to the supplied template, you can simply spray the markings on, preferably on the wings or on the tail. The colour, unknown in the wild, can have a deterrent and irritating effect on birds of prey and prevent further losses.

i am surprized that the falcon attacks so low , in Europe the peregrine gets its pray very high, comes in amazing stoops but furtunatelly your homing pigeons dont get very high , that,s why falcon is flying arround, it try to make the pigeons go high. as long as they stay low they are safe but you,ll have much bigger problems with the peregrine when pakistani pigeons will be released cause unlike homing they go very high and up there it is peregrine,s kingdom.

Hey Maney, I usually clap and it scares predators away. But I clap every time I go to my pigeons so they get used to clapping so they won't get scared of it, but the hawks will. I found it really effective! But if that doesn't work........then try the same method, but with an air horn! My parents won't let me get an air horn, but it really works! Your birds may get scared at first, but they know where their home is and they'll come back, and if you try this method, then use an air horn near your birds when they aren't flying to get them used to the big noise. If you do it, the predators will be scared and fly away while keeping your birds safe!

I hav the same kind of problem the birds. Will half to be a lil faster . But what you can try is 1. To get a colour. Of a bag that's look the same colour. Of the falcon or halk and wave it in front of them ⚠⚠ this will spook the birds into getting. Us to the falcon or halk hope this helps I try this and I still do and my birds don't even get soo spooked again .🙂 hope the birds are good and keep safe.

Do have a handy pole or a long stick with a dark colored cloth tied to one end. One will help fear the diving hawk/falcon/kite approaching the roof when birds chilling also will help train the young pigeons flying in the direction you wave the pole clockwise or anti clockwise. You will have more fun. Rather than stress of predators each day. You will loose a few old / unhealthy or young ones. But keep breeding in your new home....

Hi mate. Long story short. We also live on a farm/smallholding,and yes seems you a d your pigeons are closer to nature and falcons🙈 Last year they caught so many of my birds i almost stopped flying, but the birds git fit and cleaver, and eventually they falcons left because they couldn't get them any more. This year, first time i got the young birds out, they where back, but this time round the birds knew what it was and what to do,and 3 months later they haven't caught 1. I see falcons now as "trainers". 😂 Keep the faith i know its hard, but it will get better soon as your birds get fitter. Good luck.

Kurt , the old guys that raced pigeons near me when I was growing up , had "Eyespot wing-transfers" on some of the birds , blue bars mainly , this was done to prevent birds of prey from attacking the pigeons . I'm not sure how effective it was , but there's plenty of evidence in nature that can support the use of "large eyes" as a deterrent from predators, such as butterflies , some fish , also other birds . I'll try to find out more for you .

try getting a family of peewees, i had a pigeon for 10 years and she was free, and i spent so much time with her , especially out the front of the house, cause we had a hawk or two that lived in the other paddock, and i realised that if there was a hawk around, the peewee bird, looks like a small magpie, they were like the trumpeteers and they send out the alarm call all around the area and my pigeon and all her wild friends would know how close the hawk was by were the peewee was raising the alarm, it was amazing to see how all the bird species worked together against the hawk, so peewee is there little hero who keeps them all safe. i asked some people and i googled it but there was no knowledge of this but because i was my birds shadow and best friend i learnt how imp peewees are for pigeons safety, and peewee would eat with our wild pigeons and our pigeon, he would eat the seeds sometimes, a brave little fellow the peewees are, you may need to google how to get peewees to your farm and what attracts them,

Wow 😯 You should have clapped your hands, shout any noise to distract that Falcon! Not keep on watching 😕 Being a lifetime fancier, raced for 26 odd years here on Anglesey, North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 this is the part reason i packed up racing 😔together with the number of Sparrowhawk too, heartbreaking indeed. Their well and truly overprotected now here, I knew it would get worse back in 1984 it all started! If that's your first time being hit by Peregrine then be prepared for relentless attacks now I'm afraid 😑 This one here definitely a hungry juvenile and not all clued up yet! Usually if they don't get them in that stoop they give up unless there's two hunting together, but this one kept on turning back, making me think it's a juvenile Falcon? Enjoy watching your channel, brilliant fair play, but please next time be very wary of these predators they're lethal!

I just read the peregrine falcon reaches faster speeds than any other animal on the planet when performing its 'stoop', which involves soaring to a great height and then diving steeply at speeds of over 320 km/h (200 mph). A pigeon can reach 150 km/h (93.2 mph). That's equivalent to putting a Ferrari 812 up against a 1993 Ford Escort 1.3L. Bye bye pigeon.

I feel your pain mate, i had falcons decimate my Birmingham rollers, the falcon is the fastest animal on the planet and very smart, they will use the sun to assist and use a path where the pigeon is blinded by the sun and swoop and take the pigeon who can't see it coming ... the best thing to do is have a separate loft of useless dummy pigeons like ordinary homers and let them out first, hopefully the falcon can catch one of them and then you're free to let your good birds out for a hassle free fly time.

Mate get a kite and paint eyes on either side the bigger and darker the better .try find a kite that's light in colour white preferably .
Right each time you go to let your birds out before doing so you need the kite up in the air as high as possible you'll find the falcons will spook and stay away because the eyes are bigger than there's so they associate it with a bigger bird of prey and don't want to be prey themselves. The pigeons should settle down and get used to the kite if not put the kite on the ground flat so the eyes can still be seen from above . Hope this helps we have peregrines around us and lots of sparrow hawks but it's the hens that attack pigeons as the male sparrow hawk is smaller than a pigeon . 😉

@@ManeyPigeons I reckon an adult would see and kill, Yours is frigging around, clueless, learning. They are territorial, so scare off is best bet..... I dont know what laws prevail there but you could use a decoy to attract and fire a shotgun to scare off, ie not at it.... they soon bugger off when they hear that...and for good with a bit of luck. any rabbits can be cleared out at the same time!
