diggin the paint job - stealth when closed and high vis when open - good job man
+Nick Ferry Thanks Nick!
I love the editing on the table saw cuts. Almost looked like stop motion.
Very cool, Bob. That orange and black is sweet.
You're reading my mind Bob. I have plans drawn up for something similar for the back of my Subaru. Great to hear your take on it!
Love the way that looks! The handles are my favorite.
Nice tool box, Bob! I do have a suggestion though. It does need to be bolted down. I speak from experience. I was hit from the rear in a company van about 10 years ago, when I drove a slot machine repair route. The only thing that saved my bacon was the fact that there was a cage between the cargo area and the passenger area. Tool boxes, tools, parts, and other miscellaneous items flew and bounced in all directions inside that van, with one exception - the single tool box that was bolted to the floor and padlocked shut. This isn't something I read about, saw on Facebook, or something that happened to the friend of a cousin of a guy I know - it happened to me. Our manager raised holy cain with ownership, and within about 3 months, every van in the fleet had 3 tool and parts boxes and locking cabinets bolted into each van to prevent cargo from impaling someone in the event of an accident. Just something to think about.
+Mark Lindsay couldn't agree more. The Army actually trains for this exact issue.
ua-cam.com/video/GIES6mWac-o/v-deo.html
Nothing like getting smacked in the head with a heavt foam coated ammo box to teach you about bolting shit down!
+Mark Lindsay Good on your manager for taking a proactive approach to worker safety. Took the hint from the near miss and made a change for the better.
+Flip “Flip” Yaforeal Good link and better to learn from a foam ammo box than mourn a lost mate.
+Mark Fryer it seems like as long as his back seat is not folded down that it is locked in place.
+Dave McClintock
Except when somebody rearends you at 45mph and you're at a dead stop.
awesome build. and really like that you talk about the little changes you've made as the project moved along. it happens all the time, and you took the time to talk about it. thank you
Your camera work is so on point! I used to have a '93 LC, and now I'm back in the market for one. I'll definitely be keeping your DIYs in mind. Thanks!
Wonderful sponsor segment. This is usually NOT my favorite part of your videos, but this one was attention getting and informative. Loved the picture-in-picture format. Keep doing it that way.
Is there a way to lock the drawers in place. Might be a little fun to watch if you park up hill and open the tail gate.
You could try these cheap, public toilet locks - not that pretty, but would work well imo
I've recently been designing a set of drawers for the rear of my 4Runner, so I'm always looking for original ideas - I like the wide section in the back and love the orange drawers - its a very original touch that helps lighten up the dark drawers. As always, you bring a very original solution to a common problem - great job...
I built something similar back in the '80's when I was an apprentice carpenter and needed to carry and secure my tools in my station wagon. It was made of ply and had a tailgate that could fold down and a concertina lid to access tools from toolboxes.
Really nice addition to your rig! Since you asked, I would make a couple changes.
1) The back section of the box is just going to be super hard to use. I think I would make the drawers really long, able to be pulled out, with dividers to allow for separate sectioning.
2) I would orient the ribbed mat 90º so that the ribs are running front-to-back. Sliding anything on them as-is is going to be impossible, particularly things like grocery bags that will catch. I realize the idea of the mat is traction, but I think this will end up being a hassle to use.
But great project, and congrats on the video sponsorship!
Who else watch these videos just because it's satisfying? 😂
Meeee! 😁 even though I know I can never make these stuff because I don't have the resources and all 😂
+Juztine Bridgette he's got thousands of dollars worth of tools. I'm watching these like.. "It would be so much cheaper for me to just buy whatever he's building" I have tools, but not a table saw, drill press, vinyl cutter, etc etc, ALL the stuff he has
+Yele 360 Hold on now, I built a similar sort of box when I was an apprentice carpenter and I had not much more than hand tools and a power saw, so go easy on the "I dont have the tools to make this" sob story please.
+Kim Kim Well the first resource you are missing is the Determination to Build something like this.
+Mark Fryer Go easy on me. 😂😂 my grandfather is a carpenter and I only have brothers that's why I really appreciate watching these kind of things. No worries, I'm only 18... I will once I finished studying. 😂😂
Nice job! I like the rubber matting you added on the bottom and the top. I removed the back seat out of my '98 jeep wrangler tj and built a deck/trunk in it's place a few years ago. I used 3/4 marine ply and matching outdoor carpet to boot. I went so far as to wrap the deck around the top edge of the jeep tub and rear roll cage. When the tailgate is open, the center top section can be slid out temporarily to accommodate larger items. Like yourself, I normally keep the typical car stuff in trunk. I used large storage tubs for organization and water proofing just in case. The front edge of the box extends up just behind the front seats. That's where I have a hi-lift jack mounted.
Great idea. I've seen similar things in movies where the hero pulls up with an SUV and pops open the back and pulls out several drawers of weapons. Always thought that looked cool but never really thought about making a cabinet/toolbox. Now I will! Thanks!
Toolbox done! Just need the Land Cruiser now.
Save yourself some money and buy an old Sequoia 4WD instead. They sell for about 1/2 the price of a comparable Land Cruiser.
@@Alan62651 They're about 1/2 the truck too.
@@Alan62651 Land Cruiser good but Patrol is better. Had both and Nissan wins hands down.
beaufighter245 dumb comment what Nissan and what land cruiser are you comparing a 45 to a gu or what and in what aspect are they better ride, comfort, off-road ability, reliability, because the 80 series land cruiser will beat any patrol out in all of these fields
@@SpAceProductions100 y61. Sun must be getting to you. Patrol the better car. Had Toyotas so I know what I'm talking about. Do your research.
Next time you could try to build the enclosure in two parts split down the length of the vehicle. Then you can keep the "wings" and drop each one in easier. When I used to build up false floors for subwoofer enclosures in car audio builds, that's what we'd do to make it much more manageable.
Thanx for that good idea, which I will use to design my "picnic kitchen" setup for the rear of my small Honda Fit. The rear door surrounds and wheel arches intrude into the space available, but such a split system could overcome that limitation.
Glad I came upon this! I was looking to put one in my Nissan Frontier. I'm almost finished with it. I hope to have it installed by tomorrow. Thanks!!!
Very nice drawer and platform build! I love the material you used for the top of the platform. I am restoring a 1997 Land Cruiser currently and this video gave me some fantastic ideas. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
Even though I don't make most of the things he talks about I just love his vids! I also like how he deeply explains and give us detailed instructions but also at the end he explains how we can improve it! Lastly I love how you respond to comments! Overall I think you are an underrated channel
+Geo Brell thanks! That's awesome to hear! I really appreciate it :)
+I Like To Make Stuff see, that what I mean!
+I Like To Make Stuff see, that is what I mean!
This looks great... question, why did you put the green painters tape on after gluing the rubber mat to the top (@4:05) ?
+Live Free and DIY Ah! I didn't explain that. It was to stop any squeeze out from dripping down onto the drawer fronts (it ended up not being necessary at all)
+I Like To Make Stuff that's what I figured, thanks for elaborating :)
Green it is blue buddy
Great Idea Bob, I've been wanting to do something similar for some time now. You've just shown me exactly what I need to do. Thanks!
Love it. I like how you left the drawer sides wood colored and didn't paint them black as well. The contrast is very pleasing to the eye.
Jack Bauer had a "war drawer" like this in the back of his SUV on 24.
Looks great but I would really mount it permanently. If your ever in a accident that becomes one huge projectile.
+DEMMERY11 Yeah, definitely planning on it.
Great video! I just start a project similar to yours. I have an astro van with Dutch doors, No tailgate. So I am incorporating a board that slide out under the draws. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome, the best looking toolbox I've seen. I love the contrast of orange and black. Very factory look
A regular corpse won't fit, which is both good and bad, but great idea and great video! :D
+Cactus! workshop Even worse is that a small child's WILL fit
+Cactus! workshop Could always keep a hacksaw in there and cut the corpse up and place it inside the storage box... just to say I'm no a psychopath. XD
+TheeModerateGamer Lol now I wish I hadn't commented that hahah
Cactus! workshop ahaha
+Cactus! workshop every thing you say one the internet can and will be used against you in court...
Wow
I love when you do work on your Land Cruiser.
Arduino, RF and DC Motors, I'm just saying ;)
+Handskemager 👍🏻
I Like To Make Stuff hey it's my birthday soon and I'm wondering if I should get tools as I'm only getting on 15 but I don't early want to get used to tools as my ambitions out of work in the future is to have a workshop like yours any suggestions ?
I Like To Make Stuff What were the overall dimensions of your toolbox?
Love this project! Came out so good. Real professional and clean look
Great video! This is the idea I'm planning on following for my drawer system in my 80!
Can you make a pinhole camera?
Hmmmm..... :)
That would be really cool
Are you married? Because I think you are amazing, DATE ME! 😌❤️
He's married with kids. Sorry girl!
+Lauren Linkvis *he is married and has kids. Don't get it wrong
+SuperSamu hahahaha
+SuperSamu lol good point hahaha
SuperSamu haha!
Hey Bob- I had something similar in an old 4runner when I was a contractor. I HIGHLY recommend attaching it to the truck. Ii used turn buckles to strap it to the cargo loops because I was always thinking about if there was a turn over circumstance the tools inside and the platform itself would become a horrendous projectile. That being said your build is awesome. I LOVE the rubber mat.
I made a storage box for my FZJ80 as well. Wound up using automotive carpet and staples as opposed to rubber. I suppose the rubber will last longer. Just thought the carpet would be easy enough to replace if needed. Also, for the areas above the wheel wells, I wound up cutting two pieces of plywood and contouring them to the sides of the cargo area. Then, used a piano hinge to that they would both open. I use that area for random extras that don't fit in the drawers (recovery gear, tools and first aid for me). Great video!!
Hey Bob, I made something similar to this for my 4runner about a year ago. I love mine and I hope you enjoy yours in the years to come!
Very cool build. Great tips and ideas on changing your mind on the fly. Thank you for sharing your talent and video, Rodney
Thanks, I've actually been searching for something good to use to glue a rubber mat similar to this to some sheet metal to make my new floorboards for the motorcycle. Going to try this liquid nails stuff.
YAS! love this Bob. vehicle edc organization :D can't wait to see the customized removable tool boxes for the sides. that's a great idea.
I built one out of scrap particle board as a test for my Ford Bronco. I built it to fit around the wheel wells and from the tailgate to the back of the rear seat in the back so it gives me a solid floor so nothing can fall between the box and the sides. This also ensures the box has nowhere to go when hitting tight curves or when taking off/braking. I've got two wide drawers that fit between the wheel wells and run from the tailgate to the back seat, and one drawer on each side of those that fit between the tailgate and each wheel well. The top has been carpeted to match the interior to trick anyone trying to look in and to aid in grip for cargo on top of the box. It works well and while you'd thing that it wouldn't, it creates a lot more storage. I've had engine blocks, bags of cement, brick, etc on top of the box and it hasn't failed yet. I do want to rebuild it eventually out of 3/4" plywood just for the peace of mind of the integrity.
Great storage cabinet
Nice work! I made something similar years back that I use during hunting season. It goes in the back of my Tahoe, but is one large drawer with dividers. I can fit my shotgun diagonally, and then all the gear for me and my dog in the drawer. Really cleans up the back, rather than bags and gear scattered everywhere. Slides would have been nice - I just used a hardwood strip with a little wax on it, and it slides fine. Love your projects - keep up the great stuff!
You should mount it on under side mount industrial sliders that bolt through the floor of the truck to the frame. It will secure it in place in case of an impact, and give you the option to use it as a pull out work space in case you need a work area out in the field. When I worked in fire services and EMS the supervisor vehicles had similar pull out storage that allowed for easy access and work area.
Awesome project Bob! It's always tough to pack a bunch of random things in a wide open cargo area, that makes it simple, and I like that it's camouflaged a bit.
This is a great idea. I may have to do something like this for my wife's vehicle. It would definitely make getting to those emergency tools a whole lot easier to get to even when the vehicle is full packed.
It'd be nice to see customers cone into our shop with stuff like that. Great job man. Its awesome.
It was a nice surprise to see this was for a LC. I have a 97 LC and am also a amateur woodworker and CNC router/laser maker.
Outstanding! Jawdropping actually. Inspired me to do this to my truck!
I have been watching your channel for a while now and I just wanted to let you know that you always have the best sponsorship format, I fully understand that content wont get made without support and you always approach it so honestly as an addition rather than a distraction from your builds, its quite refreshing. keep up the great work!
+Michael Waite thank you! I really appreciate that!
Very well thought out. Looking forward to the grab and go toolboxes.
Orange and black, timeless! Looks great, very practical
I did somthing like this to my vehicle. I dont have pictures but the basic purpose was so that when I folded down the back seat, the top of the tool box was level with the lowered seat back. This made it easier to haul longer items like a sheet of plywood.
thank you man, i was looking for some thing like this for my nissan xterra, God bless you. hugs from Honduras.
I've always loved making stuff; I remember using a rasp and a vise to make wooden swords out of stakes as a kid. A lack of tools never really bothered me. Don't get me wrong, now I've got a table saw, plunge router, orbital sander, etc, but I didn't always have those tools. For everyone in the comments section bemoaning the fact that they can't build stuff because they don't have the tools, I should say this: Buy a few sheets of plywood, a drill if you don't have one, (if you really can't afford it, a hand-drill and screwdriver will do), some screws, two hinges, a handle, and some wood glue. With those tools, you can make a box. It won't look fancy, it won't be perfect, but you made it, and that's what matters. Again, thank you Bob, for another excellent video.
you the man, Bob, great video and project once again.
Keep on trucking ! (from France)
Love it!!!! Worth the time to watch the hole video
Very well done, nice job. I enjoy your vids. Even when I don't follow them exactly they still give me great ideas.
Cool build. I've been thinking about building something for my Bronco and this is perfect solution
Love the shot at 1:47 and this whole project in general
Thank's for another great video. Helpful for people like me trying to build my own
great time laps i love how you edit your videos. they look amazing!!!
you make it look so easy.
just satisfying
Simple and functional, plus it looks like it can be adapted for almost any SUV. Another great project!
+Sonal Mobile Thank you!!
Gee that was a really good build. I am trying to come up with the best option for me and you have helped, thanks.
Nice box! The bright orange interior is a clever idea. I bet it's much easier to find what you are looking for in the dark.
On my brothers earlier Land Cruiser he made a similar storage system all nailed and glued butt joined joints. Some of the joints failed over time and a lot of rough roads and use. With his latest Cruiser he remade the same box system but with rebated corners and with trenches for the internals and all glued and screwed. He also reinforced all the external corners he could with 1/16" thick aluminium angle that he attached with "Sika Flex" polyurethane adhesive and a few screws while it went off. It does not look like failing any time soon. I don't know if you have Sika products in the US but you do have Devcon who also make super strong adhesives.
Would love to see another iteration of these with finger joints and implementing some compound drawer systems. Like the designs from the adventure index for the 4th gen 4runner 🤘
Absolutely love it! Nice work.
Very well done! I really like your vision. Great project
This was one of your most entertaining and educational videos I've seen yet. I look forward to more!
Fantastic i might have a go you made it look pretty easy. thanks
Fantastic video as always. I'm going to make one for my CR-V this weekend.
I have a 93 Land Cruiser and I love the cruiser vid's. Thanks! A cool welding video would be a mount over one of your wheel wells to hold an on board air compressor.
Nice job, I think I'll use some of you ideas for my pickup drawers
This answered my questions on how to build a proper drawer. I think my build game just got a little better by watching just this video. You got my Sub, nice work.
Love the Orange and Black
aaaahhh love it. made a double floor(to store protection paper, wallpaper board etc (im a painter)) to my peugot partner a while back, but this was even more awesome. ill incorporate some of your features in v1.0 to my car :D
Wow! This is so cool, I don’t have access to the the various saws to make the boxes but maybe some ikea hacking could work... thanks for the idea. Especially love the rubber top. It would keep your boxes clean if you had garden tools in there too
Totally doing this. Adding shocks to the lid for sure though!
awesome build, Bob!!! Enjoyed this video very much!
I like this build a lot. Very inspiring...
Thanks Bob. This is a great project.
Hi Bob -
Thanks for the great video. I was half way through with my Jeep drawer storage build when I discovered yours and got some great ideas from you. I particularly liked the rubber mat idea, so that's what I did.
The problem I ran into was the use of Liquid Nails FuzIT. After reading the instructions, I laid down the beads of the stuff on top of the box. Then I immediately placed the mat down and noticed the beads of glue did not flatten out as I had expected, even after rolling it out and placing weight on top of it.
Probably no one would notice except for me, but I was very disappointed in the product for this application. Of course there is no going back now.
Anyway, I am grateful for your detailed video and the terrific ideas.
I like the method you use in your videos...go right to the build with explanations . No need to waste time watching you saw, drill or sand. Keep up your presentations, nice work. Thank you
Awesome job as always.
Nice and clean. Thanks man.
Loved the transitions (1:07ish) your video skills are getting so expert.
great build I've been thinking about this idea for my tahoe.
Beautifully done!
Love your work and the way you think!
great video well done and I like the project. and yes i'll watch more of these just cause they are cool (
and well produced)
another great video thanks Bob. you should make the two side tool boxes so the come together with magnets and it can be a hand tool bucket of sorts just brain storming.
Very cool! Great idea and great color choices!
Wicked. Looking forward to building something close for the Sprinter!
This is really cool! Ive thought about something like this for in my Excursion.
Nice work. Your videos are so satisfying, I wont make anything but always I like to watch your videos.
Super nice! I really like the colored drawers! Very nice touch.
A great idea. This is something for my car to. Have a nice day
Impressive build and design
