My big mistake? Only spending the day here! Budapest, Hungary: one of Europe's great cities.

- Today I arrive in Budapest at the start of my journey east which will eventually take me to Chisinau Moldova. But I had a few hours here to try and tire myself out before the overnight train. Join me on a quick run round a city that clearly deserved more time!
Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

Thanks for showing our beautiful capital to the world. Do come back, there's a lot more to this town. Cheers from Hungary
Thanks so much! It really was amazing to visit!
@@steve-marsh you know why Moldova exists? Because in Romania there's a 5.5% Hungarian MINORITY whose party has 18% of the government (such a discrimination!😂). If Moldova,, with 82% of inhabitants of Romanian ethnicity, ever reunites with Romania, then the Hungarian party in Romania drops under the 5% threshold and so loses their lucrative and influential positions in the government! So they oppose with every tool they have, perpetuating the effects of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact 😢
We visited for the first time last summer anbd absolutely loved it. Beautiful city and the food was a surprise - fantastic.
I've been to (only?) 16 countries in the world, but Budapest really touched my heart so much. I didn't expect to experience this much of a beauty. I've become a great fan of Hungary and I am proudly weaingr my souvenir t-shirts, one of them featuring the legendary yellowish tram. Love from Poland to all Hungarian folks ♥
I am from Scotland but actually live in Budapest and it's a great city to live in with an impressive public transport system to get quickly from a to b frequently. The cost of living here is much lower than in the UK and at present Hungary has got the highest food inflation in Europe, so it's quite expensive for the locals who earn far lower wages than in the UK. I enjoyed your video and would urge you to come back and see much more of this beautiful city.
Thanks Robert! Yeah, I'm always careful saying somewhere is 'cheap' realising it might not be that way for locals earning in local currency. The abundance of food though was incredible compared to back home. But aye, I didn't even scratch the surface of this wonderful place, although I was happy to be able to just wander around, for some reason I'd expected it to be a sprawling city!
@@steve-marsh If you think about it, it makes sense. High prices makes it harder to sell, therefore more food piles up.
Anyway, you are more than welcome to come back anytime, there is a lot more to see :)
Interesting fact about Budapest: The birdge that Steve used to cross the river was actually built by a scottish engineer, named Adam Clark. Greetings from Edinburgh, Scotland from a hungarian expat 😊

@@DudiMr yeah, i have been taking your job, healthcare mate. I hope you like it 😉
Glad to see Budapest is thriving
I spent a week in Budapest once and it felt like I barely scratched the surface, it's hard to imagine what you could see in a couple of hours but now you know to go back.
Aye that’s all it taught me, that I need to go back!
It might be interesting (since you are from Scotland) to mention that at 13:13 when on the bus crossing on the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, you can hear the announcement "The next stop is: Clark Ádám tér (square)" - "Adam Clark (Hungarian: Clark Ádám; 14 August 1811 - 23 June 1866) was a Scottish civil engineer who is best known for his career in Hungary. His most famous work is the Széchenyi Chain Bridge over the Danube River in Budapest, which was one of the longest bridges in the world when it opened." (wikipedia) Greetings from Budapest, come back again :)
Brilliant comment, thank you!
It makes me so proud seeing all the people here adoring the town where i was born. All of you are so wholesome. Thank you!
A wonderful city Jason!
Wow, Budapest looks amazing. I was there for 2 days, but you saw a lot more than me in your wee hours there. People are very friendly there, and architecture is magnificent, especially the Basilica. 😊
Some place eh Mike! And totally agree, friendly place, I'd love to explore Hungary more widely now :)
Love the 20-30 mins of escapism you bring us every Saturday morning. Really enjoy following your trips/ walks around some fascinating cities and coastlines home and away!
Thanks so much Mike!
@@steve-marsh Hi Steve. I have a question about one of you're CalMac videos. What's the best way to ask it? Thanks
I've lived in Budapest for over 7 years. It is a safe and amazing city with beautiful architecture. I love that it is walkable and has great public transport so I don't need a car.
I’m watching you from Pennsylvania USA ,yet another super video from you, Keep them coming, thank you ❤
Patricia thanks so much!
Never realized what a beautiful place Budapest is. Never knew that the name of the place is made up with two names either side of the Danube. Absolutely fabulous video. Thanks Steve, keep them coming!
I expected it to be huge, but the reality is a beautiful, compact city with SO much to see and do - definitely a week next time!
@@steve-marsh don't underestimate the size, but the outer neighbourhoods are often a lot less exciting, with lots of typical post-war flats.
Buda and Pest was officially only united in 1873, however there was a city on that spot since the roman times
What an incredible city. High on the bucket list. And a city that knows how to do Trams! 😊
Haha exactly mate! 🤣
Lots of beautiful places to visit.
What a lovely trip around Budapest.
I thought the architecture inside the church was absolutely amazing.
Look forward to seeing the next one.
Oh it was STUNNING!!! So glad I went inside as I almost just walked past!
@@steve-marsh Budapest is like a jewel box! I was born here. If you come back, I recommend that you take a look at these buildings as well.

I was born in Budapest and still live here, but the difference between the 2 lions in the castle is new to me as well. There are similar old markets in every inner district, they are also very beautiful, but they are smaller and tourists cannot find them because they are in hidden places.
What a wonderful city to call home!
I am from Dorset but moved to outside Budapest when I was 37.
Superb place to live and wish I’d done it years ago.
I'm not really one for cities but Budapest did look lovely. Another great video Steve and looking forward to your next one. Nothing gladdens the heart of a Scotsman like a free bus ride!
Haha so true 🤣🤣🤣
@SteveMarsh you visited my country. I have lived here in England for thirteen years in the county of Devon, near the Riviera line, where you filmed from the night Riviera sleeper train. This video inspired me to explore England's railways. I hope you had a good time in Hungary
Another great video mate, Budapest looks amazing. I have great respect for the proud Hungarian people :)
Here here!
Nice indoor Market plus bridge is nice
Thank you for introducing us to Budapest. It looks like a beautiful city.
My pleasure 😊 I really loved it, just wish I'd had more time!
Your doing great Steve 👍
Thank you for a trip down memory lane! I was in Budapest in 1992…the bridges, the castle, the Parliament, so many interesting buildings.
Thanks for revisiting with me :)
You need to revisit the city, oh my God. 1992 was so long time ago, and after the end of the communism Budapest was in horrible condition in that time. Compare now you would see a totally new city, where you can enjoy it's real splendour...
Magnificent!! I missed it....but hoping someday I shall be there to see with my own eyes... Thanks a bunch.
What a grand old city great architecture wonderful 😊😊😊
Absolutely stunning video Steve, Budapest is beautiful, loved the Vehicular railway & the Basilicca, fabulous views, felt like I was there.
Great video, as always.
Budapest is a wonderful city to explore - I spent two years there and still feel there's so much more to see!
I have been to Budapest 4 times. Absolutely love the place I'll have to head back again soon!
A few hours definitely isn't enough. I'll be planning to go there hopefully having watched this. Looks stunning. Thanks for your glimpse into Budapest. Look forward to the rest of your European Adventure videos.
Cheers John! It was a great trip, but need more time in ALL these places!
Budapest looked beautiful, I do hope you can return and show us more. Thank you for this first look at the city.
I need to take Alicja and spend more time relaxing there :)
What a beautiful city😍. The parliament building was stunning! You will definitely need to return for longer, Steve😊
oh absolutely Sheila, I didn't even begin to scratch the surface!
The Bazilika named after you is where I spent each n every Sunday with my Family from 10-18 years old! We lived near by. .)
Lovely video, I went to Budapest for a week (the year of Eyjafjallajökull, the train home was absolutely packed with stranded air passengers), and have been back a few times, it's a gorgeous city.
Some tips for a next time: the trams are much fun, especially rack line 60 up to the Children's Railway (which is exactly what it sounds like), metro line 1 is the oldest on the European continent, the main stations Nyugati and Keleti are some of the most beautiful European terminus stations IMO, the restaurant boat Vén Hajó in your video is a good place to eat (at least it was so many years ago, a bit touristy perhaps, but great food and a lovely spot), Margitsziget is great in Summer, as are the old bath houses. And of course, you should really visit one of the grand coffee houses, Gerbeaud, Central and New York are probably the most famous ones, but there are many other who do justice to the great Habsburgian coffee house tradition.
Thanks so much for sharing!!!
You have very detailed knowledge about Budapest and cited the names sharply. Bravo!
@@vacziimre thanks! Not saying Budapest is just a budget-Vienna, it's more than that, but it offer a lot of those same qualities Vienna has, with the added bonus of a grand river (Vienna lost touch with their Donau banks). And I find a lot of creativity in the city, the only criticism I might have is the (too) dominant position of the city in Hungary, even if that's somewhat inevitable. If it doesn't happen in Budapest, it didn't happen...
@@barvdw You know, Budapest was made for a much bigger country, mainly in the end of 19th siecle, in the Golden Age of Hungary. Pozsony (Bratislava), Nagyvárad (Oradea), Kolozsvár (Cluj), Kassa (Kosice), Temesvár (Timisoara), Újvidék (Novi Sad), were almost similar big cities which were cut by the new borders after WW1. Budapest often called the "Water Head" of the country. But it is history now, life goes on.
@@vacziimre I know. Still, I find many of the other cities (Miskolc, Győr, Eger, Nyiregiháza...), while lovely, totally overshadowed and overwhelmed by Budapest, and that's a shame. Budapest attracts the tourists and investment, while the rest is lagging. Not sure how to respond to it, though...
You are fairly getting around, and to the most interesting of places. Well done, it is appreciated and enjoyed.
Cheers Colin! Really impressed by Budapest, wish I'd had more time!
I did all of that and more about four years ago. A fantastic city
Mind you most of those eastern cities are 👍
Lovely wee tour of Budapest.. A day is defo not enough.. 😁😁 Been there 3 or 4 times as it is one of my favourite cities in Europe.. Vienna, Budapest and Prague are all equal gorgeous for various reasons.. Can't wait for your continuance of this trip to Bucharest and Moldova, never been there myself.. 😉
Cheers mate! I can see why you love Budapest, although aye, I've seen NOTHING of it really!
Yes, the Golden Triangle of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy: Prague, Budapest, Vienna...
Going next week for 5 nights. Can't wait 😅😊❤
Incredible destination for tourism
I’ve been living here for 14 years and I still manage to find lots of areas that I didn’t know about.
same here!
Thank you for this video from Hungary!
So much to see in Budapest lovely city opera house and parliament are worth visits
I love Budapest one of my favourite places. So nice in the summer sitting in Buda on the fisherman's bastion amazing views ❤
You have great taste in cities! Awesome place eh!
Thank you for the reminder, how beautiful this city is, and how much i get used to in everyday life, i dont pay much attention to where i am just wanna get over the daily stuff, but living here is wonderful, lot of history, great people!
You do have a nice trip and good life ahead!
I was in Budapest 4 years ago , me and my wife had 6 days there, very interesting city with a lot to see .one of my favourite places.
6 days sure would be better than 1! :)

Thank You.
I will be going there soon.
What a wonderful relaxed style Steve displays as he wanders through the cities of Europe- always delivered in a interesting manner with a light touch. Very professional !
Cheers John! Really enjoyed Budapest, but I fear my video hasn't even scratched the surface!

You are always welcome to touch our rivers!
Great video Steve. I t looks as though those steps were made special, for visitors to touch the water. T here are some wonderful old cities around Europe.
Great little commercial for Budapest :) Make sure you return to spend a bit more time here and try some of the local cuisine and wine. Cheers!
Oh will do for sure!!! :)
Such a beautiful city, the architecture is stunning👌Cool video once again Steve👍
Cheers Rab! Some place eh!
I lived in Budapest for a year with my wife back in the mid 90s. It remains one of my favourite Capitals in the world. You must go back Steve when you have time. You won’t regret it!
Budapest needs a fortnight.
Thank you for taking me back there - I had to scoot in March 2020.
So true mate!
I studied in Budapest for six years and once two of my friends got stoned and went down to the Danube and ate bits of a dead pigeon. One of them got typhoid and went to the hospital for two weeks while the other one was lucky, only his hair fell off...best times ever!
Budapest panorama central is badass! Lift is sketchy lol but loved hotel
Wow.. Thanks so much Steve for this trip to Budapest.. I just recieved a film award from there.
All the best.
Congratulations mate!
Thanks a lot Steve. Yes I've been acting for just on 5 years, and last year I made my 1st film as Writer/Producer/Director and actor. It's doing the Film Festival Circuit now... and Budapest was one of the festivals it won Best Short Film. (Not bad for a 76yo.)
Keep your amazing adventures coming.. I so much look forwards to them. Oh my film is called The Final Bullet.
Cheers Roger
Thank you for bringing back memories of Budapest. I visited in February 2008 but many of the public buildings were being renovated (including Liberty Bridge), so it's definitely time I re-visited. I didn't visit the basilica nor the funicular, and just a little steeper than my present record, The Peak in Hong Kong. I have never been to Romania but I feel it's not too far off the cards, I can't wait for your next episodes to whet my appetite. Travel safe and thanks again!
Cheers Michael! What a place eh? So glad you've had the pleasure, but aye, time to go back :)
I only visited Hungary once (despite my name), and since, I often think about this city. Truly a special place.
I presume it's hard to live abroad with such a Hungarian name :) Do you speak Hungarian also?
@@vacziimre Beszélem egy kicsit, de sajnos lasan elfelejtem. Mint tudjuk, Észak amérikaban, a magyar egy ritka nyelv!
Looks a fabulous place one for the list
Thank you for showing this beautiful capital where I was born. Unfortunately I haven't seen it for 4 years now. Your short film took great memories back, so thank you!
I from Hungary 🇭🇺
Thank you for your video
Budapest is wonderful city ❤
You did a great deal in so little time. We loved Budapest. We stayed near the central rail station. The highlight for us (and hard to choose) was an old synagogue we found that was under renovation. Lots of grand things to see as well, but this out of the way treasure was very spectial.
Oh see that’s the advantage of having more time, finding these wee gems :)
Yeah it is lovely. And ofc full of interesting events, art and fun stuff if you dig deeper
Another great video! Budapest is a beautiful city and definitely worth a return visit! If you spend a few days there, you could go to the Széchenyi baths and there are so many amazing restaurants and cafes (Ruszwurm with the fabulous krémes). Looking forward to seeing the videos of the rest of the trip 😃
Oh I would have loved all of the above!!!!
@@steve-marsh If you ever need any tips for next time, just let me know!
Ah Ruszwurm! One of my favourite patisseries :)
I have spent some time both sides of the river, this is a an interesting bridge too, Széchenyi Chain Bridge.
The bridge was designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark in 1839, following an initiative by Count István Széchenyi, with construction supervised locally by Scottish engineer Adam Clark .
The Parliament building and the city in general looks spectacular on a night river cruise. Great video Steve, thank you for posting.
Cheers for that Alistair!
The Chain bridge was fabricated at the Brown Lennox chain works in Pontypridd, Glamorganshire (as it was then), United Kingdom: they also made the anchor chains for I.K. Brunel's ship "Great Eastern"
What a beautiful city - thanks for taking us along.
An absolute pleasure!
I am so proud in these moments when foreigners enjoy our capitol this much. Please come back. There are a lot more things to see.
I am planning to come to Budapest . thanks for tips .🎉
So much more to see and do than I had time to show, have a great time!
My dad has been there and it is a great city to visit. Especially the trams as well.
Terrific! Yes, Budapest worthy of more time! ❤
So true!
I busted every Turkish bath last summer in Budapest , it was a true experience! I also was able to watch the spectacular firework which was rescheduled to the time when I was there..
Fantastic! I really wish I'd had the time to visit just one! Definitely a city I need to return to!
Another great video Steve. I've not been to Budapest and was mightily impressed with the city (cities), especially that magnificent Basilica, I've got a feeling it'll be my next destination following my summer trip to Finland. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment on your interesting and fascinating journey, Bucharest is a place that I have visited.
It sure was a fun trip east! Delight eyed to finally get to Budapest, despite it being such a flying visit!
Glad you got to go to the Buda Castle. It was the highlight of my time in Budapest in June 2012. That cathedral was impressive, as most in major cities in Europe are.
Oh I wish I'd had time to go inside though!

Another fantastic video Steve! Budapest is a beautiful city, my wife and I spent 3 days in Budapest last year in Spring and felt that we could have spent a week there easily. Lot's to see and do, but definitely a place to return to once all the construction has finished, especially up at the Fisherman's Bastion. Safe travels! Quick edit, I forgot to mention I booked a stay at Strathardle Lodge for a trip next month based on your recommendations from the channel, they were saying that they actually had a couple who were staying there at the moment based on the very same reasons, nice one!

I can't imagine your reaction if you travel to Australia and touch the Darling or Bogan rivers!
Oh, and I nearly forgot the Todd river, at least when it flows and the mighty Yarra River, the only river in the world to flow upside down!

Cheers Bruce! Appreciate your understanding of the hours of editing :D
Very enjoyable video, Steve! One of your better ones! :) Budapest is a beautiful city and you should go back for a longer visit. The basilica is most impressive--a prudent investment over the "wheel" for a much higher rate of return! Cheers
