@@smyle78 just this year they closed the bridge many, many times: for the whole summer weekends of 17-18 June, 24-25 June, 5-6 August, 12-13 August in addition to many other events such as the whole weekend of May 3 (celebrating the joining to the EU), on June 6 (some kind of event) and many many more.
Not very often does a place exceed my expectations, Budapest did. Szechenyi baths worth the hype- best 47 euros I've ever spent! Wish I had planned more time for my visit- maybe 3 or 4 days? I wish I enjoyed more of the delicious food there as well. I was treated very hospitably & will return.
Thank you for sharing this nice video about the city I live in and try to promote to visitors 😊Indeed Fishermans bastion is one of the most popular spots and certainly the most crowded, but the tip about coming here late evening is nice as most of the organized tour groups are gone by that time and its easier to enjoy it, although I would say you don't need to climb up to the first floor of the Fishermans bastion (for which you need to pay during the day, but in late evening and very early morning the gates are open and no tickets are needed), the views are actually really good at the ground floor too and the arches and "Windows" make an excellent frame for the city of Pest :) Other scenic spots not mentioned in the video that I really like include the Danube view from Gellert hill lookout spots, On Buda side of the river right in front of Parliament building at Batthanyi ter Station or the View of the St Stephens Basilica in the Zrinyi street in front of it 😊
At 4.20, under the right sleeve of Bea's jacket, you can notice a minuscule statue of the famous Franz Josef, whose name the Liberty Bridge was wearing earlier. ;-) He is sitting in a hammock, but I think he was placed there only by the playful mind of the artist, Mihály Kolodko. (Feel free to correct me if there is a reason for the hammock!)
I always like to read comments from ordinary people about whether a place is nice or not, so this time I will be the one to write one. Maybe I expected a little bit more from the city, but only a little more, it is actually very beautiful and worth a visit. I haven't been to the spa, I really don't want to take a bath with a thousand people inside :) I was a little disappointed with the food, maybe I wasn't lucky when it comes to the restaurant. I ate a famous Hungarian dish, it was just boiled hot water with potatoes :/
That case you were definitely unlucky with the restaurant. Gulash is a great dish, it supposed to have loads of beef, carrots, potatoes and noodles within. Hope you come back and can give it another try! Also worth trying: Jokai bableves, halaszle, brassoi apropecsenye, lecso just to name a few
You unfortunately asked for Goulash soup. In Hungary, the dish which is called goulash internationally, is called Pörkölt. That is the thick stew most turists are looking for. It is a shame, and a big confusion unfortunately. I do not understand why restaurants dont adress this issue.
You should try fisherman's soup (halászlé). It's considered one of the spicier European foods. But a good goulash shouldn't feel like some hot water. It's actually quite a hearty soup. We have our fair share of tourist traps, so you should look the restaurants up in advance.
Huge reconstruction after the world wars and 1956 and big renovations and upgrades in the last 20 years. I'd been visiting for 11 years and living here for the last 10 years now. There was a complete overhaul of the city park and an ongoing reconstruction/renovation of the castle district with original buildings being put back to their former glory and usage. I can say that Budapest has improved in so many ways, aesthetically, the events as well as becoming quite a foodie town which I'm very grateful for. I just hope it doesn't become one of those cities with overtourism.
As a local I can say confidence that you won't dissapoint in Budapest. You can find many buildings before ww1 era and lot of bealdings from between the wars or from the age of socialism. And of course some 21st century architecture as well.
OMG. I am shocked that DW was able to show (and say) not only negative things about Hungary. I was prepared for that they would show homeless people lying on the ground, graffiti, weedy suburban housing estates, etc., since there are plenty of those as well. Surely the DW Travel editors won't have a problem from this? Does the political DW not punish them for this ideological deviation?
Same here, but I think they know very well, that Budapest is a very liberal city, with liberal co-mayor and several liberal district-mayors, with the population, which extreme level rejecting the present goverment and system. It's a decent capital, probably not on Paris or London level, but if you have free 2-3 days, it's worth the visit. (summers are extremely hot nowadays, spring season advised)
Thanks God Budapest not on London and Paris level by crime rates, but billion times more safer. Meantime compare to London aesthetically more beautiful in each segment...
The real dark side of Budapest: homeless drug zombies, vomit, urine and human feces all over the sidewalks, lots of dangerous people attacking anyone at any time for a bunch of reasons. Like a slightly lighter version of Los Angeles, but all of these are in downtown!

I have watched countless vlogs of Budapest made by Romanians. They all talk about how the Romanian capital is incomparable to Budapest in beauty, cleanliness and history. Many Romanians come here to recharge their batteries. One Romanian from Arad said that he comes once a month to soak up history! They say it is the most beautiful capital in Europe! So now they are lying?
I am from Budapest, and I fully rejecting this "Paris of the East" title, this is humiliating. I think Budapest have his own glamour and brand, don't need to compare with anyone. Budapest is just Budapest of Central Europe. I dont know much about Bucharest, but as I know this title they got in the interwar period, when the city really looked like a small-Paris. I think after the destruction of the communism (as I know Causescu destroyed a complete classical city district, to build up his megaloman Parliament), and the consequence of a devastating earthquake in the late 70s, the city now not really look like anything close to Paris, except they have few really beautiful buildings scattered, and a very small area of "old town" (Centru Vech), which containing few streets only...
