This is one of my favorite genres. Agree with Battlecon, Exceed, Yomi, Flash Duel, Combo Fighter, Super Punch Fighter, and Dice Throne. Some other ones not mentioned -- Dragon Punch, UFS / UniVersus, and Way of the FIghter. I'd also argue that Unmatched fits into this genre. Also upcoming games that I know of -- Street Fighter: The Miniatures Game, Sento: Ultimate Arcade Fighter, and Ultra Deluxe 2D Arcade Mega Fighter.
I'm surprised that BattleCON wasn't #1... And I did miss Dragon Punch here. Very light, but extremely portable and quick, and the need to refill the hand every so often does add an strategy layer.
The fact that exceed is luckier than battlecon is in fact the biggest pro for me because with battlecon you have to have a friend who is sufficiently into it whereas exceed I can easily teach it and play it with a fellow who is new to the game. Love both tho. And street fighter
Some games that were missing include: • Lost Worlds (BattleTech Science Fiction Combat Book Game, RuneSword, Marvel Battlebooks, Queen's Blade, Legend's Gauntlet, et al) (1982 and up) • Video Fighter: Dragons of Fury (1994) • Sumo (2000) • Dragon Punch (2014) • Vanquish Sky (2014) • Sakura Arms (2016) • Bushido (2018) • Way of the Fighter: Super, and Turbo (2018)
Battlecon for me is #1. Each expansion has increased the overall polish of the experience, and I sincerely hope that the final rules, character balance, and presentation (including tuckboxes!) brings it the recognition it deserves with v4.0. I recommend Trials of Indines to start as it is the most recent expansion and has tuckboxes.
I was hoping to see Dojo Kun on this list. I just purchased it because I thought it looked like a good mix of Euro and dice chucker. Looking forward to getting it on the table.
I only played dice thrones out of that list and that was a surprise to see on the list. I almost got exceed a few times thinking it sounded like the best simulation of such games. This is interesting.
For tcg that is like a fighting game I think you should try UFS or universus by Jasco games. They even get the fighting game licensees like mortal kombat, street fighter, and soul calibur
I would have replaced Street Masters with ** Dragon Punch ** as a much better fighting game. Yes, it's a small wallet style game with a limited number of cards. Yes, you play if without a table, just holding your deck in hand. But that's the appeal... knowing you can play a quick match anywhere at any time. It's a rock, paper, scissors type match, but different moves also have different initiative levels, and initiative determines which move hits first! So as you exchange blows, the loser takes damage by rotating the card they used 180 degrees, and it goes to the back of the deck. When all your cards are rotated, you lose. But when your cards are rotated, they reveal a stronger attack, so as you lose your adrenaline makes you more dangerous. It's a fun game and I'm sorry you didn't think to add it to this list.
We have got one coming to Kickstarter next year called "Punch! Kick! Block!" (2-Player tactical combat card game where you take on the roles of two extremely aggressive rival mascots who seriously just want to kick the others' butt).
If anyone wants to try Exceed, there is a Ryu vs Ken Demo pack with just the 2 of them from the Level 99 store. Even if you do not want in to the system, as a small 2p game it is a good value. .... Also, Dragon Punch, lol. But that seems to be almost exclusively for fighting game fans as you need to appreciate the nods and small move sets. Pocket Paragons will be added in 2021 from Solis Games, it is the bridge from Dragon Punch to Yomi
There is a Street Fighter Deckbuilding Game, but I understand why it’s not included on this list. There are also (short lived) Street Fighter HeroClix That are compatible w/ the Marvel/DC figures, however seem underpowered in comparison.
I'm happy to report Street Fighter V is still quite popular though I myself prefer the King of Fighters franchise. I otherwise have many friends who primarily play fighting games and I used Yomi as a gateway game to very successfully introduce them to board games.
Battlecon for me is the best. Unique characters in gameplay and in looks, they are well designed and they are cool and stylish. Yomi is good but expensive and you can “button mash” playing random cards and do well because of the rock-paper-scissor style, so a bit too random for me. Dice Throne is toooooo lite. I think they did their best with the Yahtzee foundation but it is a limited, luck-fest platform to build a fighting game on. Great production though, it is definitely snazzy.
The only game out of this list that I haven’t played is Street Masters. I agree with his top 2 but would have flipped the order. As for missing games, Way of the Fighter was not on the list. A little more complicated but pretty interesting.
The art could perhaps push Tom away as well. But they may not have sent out review copies - there are hardly any community-creatded videos of it at all.
Well that's odd. Exceed is easily the best 2d fighting game on the market. And they have a street fighter set. That should be number. Also Tom comments on it make no sense. Luck based? Rock Paper Scissors? What? It's wildly neither of those things.
Yeah, Exceed is actually a very cerebral game and it put emphasis on proximity & speed, which are traits that not often used in other fighting games. It really plays it like two fighters figuring out how to get close or stay far away, as all the fighters have their strength & weakness depending on the distance.
You draw your options from a deck. That's an element of luck. As for rock-paper-scissors, that should be quite obvious - it's a simultaneous-selection game in which some selections beat others.
In the spirit of fighting games, Tom has sent his clone character "Dark Tom" to do this list. I approve!!
"Good lighting" is a paid DLC, son.
Ken main? :)
I would say Unmatched is the best of this type!
Not really in the same genre.
From Japan there is Sakura Arms, which plays wonderfully and the character combos are lots of fun.
seconded

sakura arms is great
@@underlightmusic I have sadly yet to play it, but the rules read as if it would be a great game.
Good list, I think I would have put dice throne at #1, but these really do capture the spirit of fighting games!
Battlecon for me is #1. Each expansion has increased the overall polish of the experience, and I sincerely hope that the final rules, character balance, and presentation (including tuckboxes!) brings it the recognition it deserves with v4.0.

It's out of print right now. The new printing should hit in a few months, and it will be updated for "4.0."
Hopefully you'll get a chance to review Street Fighter: The Miniatures Game in the near future. Fulfillment is planned for Q4 2020.
I was hoping to see Dojo Kun on this list. I just purchased it because I thought it looked like a good mix of Euro and dice chucker. Looking forward to getting it on the table.
Exceed is way higher for me. It is a bit lucky but it is also way faster than battlecon. The street fighter set is really good
My favorite of the genre is Way of the Fighter, followed by Exceed Fighting System, and Combo Fighter.
Twisted Fables: Exceed with deckbuilding
I wonder where street fighter the miniature game will end on this list.
I really hope it will be fantastic. I‘m waiting forever now to get my pledge.
Stefan T-Man seems like it will be worth the wait. Those miniatures are amazing. I did not back it.
Elias Hartmark The Minis will be fantastic. The question is how the rules and gameplay will be.
Have the same thought. Wait and see
If you check Jasco Games' UA-cam, they did a game of Guile vs E Honda.
I only played dice thrones out of that list and that was a surprise to see on the list. I almost got exceed a few times thinking it sounded like the best simulation of such games. This is interesting.
I’m glad to see Jab made your list! An excellent, underrated game!
For tcg that is like a fighting game I think you should try UFS or universus by Jasco games. They even get the fighting game licensees like mortal kombat, street fighter, and soul calibur
Bushido didn’t make it on your list? Oh well, it’s one I enjoy and I encourage others to check out if they’re into head-to-head fighting games.
Hi! I'm developing my own fighting game themed card game too. I would love to know your opinion once it's released.

It's a fun game and I'm sorry you didn't think to add it to this list.
Way of the Fighter should definitely of been on the list. Glad to see that Exceed made the list though.
I really enjoy 8 Masters Revenge... Very tactical card game.
I'd have put Battlecon at #1 myself, though I'd also have put Sakura Arms right behind it.
We have got one coming to Kickstarter next year called "Punch! Kick! Block!" (2-Player tactical combat card game where you take on the roles of two extremely aggressive rival mascots who seriously just want to kick the others' butt).
I like how Tom said he's out of date which fighting games are popular now and listed almost all of the popular ones :)
I agree
The popular series have continued to be popular, that's all. :)
Street master number seven. Agree to disagree. I got the all in and it hits my table once a week.
If anyone wants to try Exceed, there is a Ryu vs Ken Demo pack with just the 2 of them from the Level 99 store. Even if you do not want in to the system, as a small 2p game it is a good value.

I'm kinda missing TMNT: Shadows of the Past here, which I remember you enjoyed a lot.
There is a Street Fighter Deckbuilding Game, but I understand why it’s not included on this list.
There are also (short lived) Street Fighter HeroClix That are compatible w/ the Marvel/DC figures, however seem underpowered in comparison.
Street Fighter Heroclix (which I own) is great, but I would never play it with other sets because it just feels better as a self-contained set.
Had an idea for a Top 10:
Top 10 games considered "Sacred Cows"; and is there a game that "kills"/dethrones it.
Flesh and Blood has a pretty cerebral take on the 1v1 idea.
K-k-k-k-kombo Fighter! :D
I love Exceed and I would put it in the top 5 personally. I've also tried BattleCon but I'm not as impressed by it as it did for Tom.
I'm happy to report Street Fighter V is still quite popular though I myself prefer the King of Fighters franchise. I otherwise have many friends who primarily play fighting games and I used Yomi as a gateway game to very successfully introduce them to board games.
Do 10 games you'd like if you like dead space! You mentioned there being a bunch out there when you covered sheol on the crowd funding roundup
I think streets of steel deserved an honorable mention.
How about CapCom Street Fighter Deck-Building Game (2014) ?
I've tried Exceed and Battlecon and couldn't get into them, but Combo Fighter looks like it might be good.
The only game out of this list that I haven’t played is Street Masters. I agree with his top 2 but would have flipped the order.
As for missing games, Way of the Fighter was not on the list. A little more complicated but pretty interesting.
there's sakura arms too
I own Street Masters and War of Indines! I thought maybe Puzzle Strike would of made the list or is it more of a puzzle game?
It's just not about people punching each other.
Just give me a game with loads of asymmetry and a high-skill ceiling. The rest is semantics, tbh.
unmatched.. if there was a new video
What?! No Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, geez
Rock Em, Sock Em Robots: The Dice Game
There’s literally a Street Fighter board game on the way. Angry Joe had a hand in making it.
It's been on the way for like 3 years...
He did mention that in the video, ya know.
I was hoping to see Way of the Fighter and hear Tom's opinion on it, but I'm afraid it fell off the radar with all of Ninja Division's problems.
The art could perhaps push Tom away as well. But they may not have sent out review copies - there are hardly any community-creatded videos of it at all.

Where's Unmatched? It's my favourite!
What about Street Fighter the ks board game lol...
Patchwork.
