This game was so ahead of it's time; The lighting, the music, the characters, art and perspectives. FIRST PERSON PERSPECTIVE TOO, like, WTF??? One of the most iconic games of my childhood. Thank you for this Documentary, l loved it!
I've been replaying the game recently and one thing I think is hugely underrated is how in first person you see things in the creatures eyes. Hounds see in black and white. Beetles see in a warped fish eye lense, flies see with a sort of hexagonal kaleidoscope type of vision. It's such a flavourful touch that they didn't need to add but they put extra effort into.

Frankly, being a DK fan from childhood (like many others), as well as a software engineer, I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary. Good stuff!

I’ve been replaying this recently - on 55inch OLED. Is surprisingly brilliant! It still is a game with a unique feel. RIP Bullfrog.
try DK1 FX it is great
I loved DK2... Especially the mechanism to turn enemy units into your own with the prison (skeletons) or the graveyard (vampires) was just so cool.
You can do this in DK1 by torturing the enemy for long enough whilst healing them so they stay alive, sometimes they give you map info too.
@@drsidsloth torturing under supervision really is key or you risked wasting a good unit turning it into a ghost.

This is an excellent Documentary, could you do a one about The Dungeons series? It is amazing how that series survived beyond the first game.

Very cool to see DK get some more attention and such a well made documentary. Honestly not surprised that some of the Fable Devs worked on this game like Dene and Simon Carter, based on the humour.
One of my favorite things about the first game was the world map. I loved the mood of that map and how it darkened (including the audio!) over the course of the campaign. From chirping birds to howling wolves.
Was awesome seeing footage of early stages of the game. I wish we could get a modern Dungeon Keeper made by the original team.
There is Keeper FX mod that really improves on the mechanics .

My all-time favorite game. I was so excited for DK3... I'm 34 years old and still play DK and Deep Dungeons once in a while. I have never found a similar game with a similar concept and game dynamics.

Great documentary! Love the amount of work and digging into topic involved! Looking forward to see more of these, as I'm huge DK fan. I really appreciated the parts about the game dev process itself - it was so cool to get a grasp of what the team has been going through to deliver the game as we know it!

I discovered DK around 2013 and have spend hundreds of hours on it. Seeing this video is inspiring me to pick it up again soon.
Great documentary, I've been playing DK1 and DD every once in a while since 1998. I never got into DK2, I like that the original is more raw.
Totally agree, the visual style and vibe of the original is singular.
Keeper FX mod is great at revitilizing the replay value and is still being updated after all these years.

This was a wonderful watch. My Mum bought me DK1 by mistake and now its become such an important game from my youth. Also, nice to know why DK3 never came to fruition
I loved this game. First apt out of college we ran old school null modem phone wire between rooms for a LAN and played head to head.

That's a very thorough and comprehensive chronicle. Where in earth did you dig up all that? As a subscriber to PCZone throughout the 90s (since issue 4) I was not only first introduced to DK, but followed the whole Peter Molyneux story from beginning to end, however your documentary fills in a lot of insightful gaps!

dk and dk2 were my favorit games back then, my wife and i both loved them, we played dk2 online very much with friends all over the world, i still miss those days, thank you Bullfrog
Amazing documentary. I love DK1 and 2, then also later on played War for the Overworld. I remember wanting DK3 so bad at the time. I learned so much on this one. I had no idea Bullfrog went to work on HP1... I guess that is why I liked that game so much too. Very interesting. Thank you so much for making and sharing this awesome documentary!

I personally play Dungeons 3 right now and really like it. Makes you think about what could have been. Altough I'm sceptical hearing about the concepts for DK3,.

Reading mangas and manhwas that have plots of people owning dungeons I always think of how fun I’d be as a game.
DK is great! But pretty hard to get into now a days due to its age. There are also some alternatives but they don’t fill that hole I want.
I don’t know how to make games, but I hope to get the idea of what I want eventually.
One day my dream dungeon will appear.
Partially, the mess of huge scale assaults in dk1 was its charm. A true demonstration that you are not a tactician genius, but a leader of a devilish horde, and you might control them individually, or in small groups... but it all turns to a uncontrolled violent mess of blood, screams, farts, and warcries 😂
In the legacy section what about a mention of the Dungeons series? It's pretty much an exact copy of Dungeon Keeper...

Dungeon keeper to this day is unmatched in style and atmosphere. I think too many tried to copy DK2, in my opinion weaker game instead of this master piece
Please Bullfrog make a remake of Dungeon Keeper one for next gen consoles eg. PS5.
I loved the first game. The sequel just didn't feel like Dungeon Keeper. The tone and style really sold the dungeon feel. The sequel felt more like a cartoon than anything. Really emphasized by the fact that the Horned Reaper now looked like a fusion of Peter Griffin and Joe Swanson that was sent to cartoon Hell.
Dungeons 3 is a great modern day interpretation of DK.
DK2 was the first big game disappointment in my life. I know many of you guys dont understand, but for me DK1 was so much better than DK2. The feeling with this cartoon-like squishy look to make the game friendlier.. horrible
Well yeah, it is very inferior in many regards, especially when it comes to combat.
Same here, I play DK1 and Deeper Dungeons since 1998 and I just couldn't with DK2, the graphs are awful, I like that DK1 is dark and raw.
DK2 was a disappointment for me.. It just did not felt the same - game was ok, but somehow nothing special anymore. When DK1 was 10/10 DK 2 was 6/10. Thanks EA
I prefer DK2 but that's because I started with it in 1999. I still enjoy both games though. Maybe if I started with 1 I'd feel differently. But 2 is my starting point in the series and I have the most nostalgia with it. I have no feelings of disappointment for either game personally.
100% agree. I was 6 when i started playing dungeon keeper 1. I remember the horror of tunneling too deep and a level 8 samurai gets loosed upon you.
I'll never forgive them for how combat changed either. Warlocks and bile demons actually suck in DK2
They should make the 3. And bring 1 and 2 to consoles maybe
I hope some indie studio makes a spiritual successor with different types of keepers and varied mining minions.

DK2 have sooo easy and not complex level. try DK FX, which is DK1 with HD graphic and some other improvement that i like more tan DK2
There's just something about DK1 that can't be matched. The dreadful vibe is just on another level.
The only problem i have with the "Dungeon Keeper 3" is that it is too cutesy and colorful. Means it could even play 10 times better than Dungeon Keeper ever did.. and i still would prefer to play the original becuase it isn't looking like it.
Wipeout? Pod is and was one of the greatest racing games ever made. Getting it to work right was a nightmare. In now's day's just take a bullet in the head. I tried.

DK2 was such a letdown to me, how could they deviate so much from the look and feel of the first game?
DK1 wasn't perfect, but it's one of my favorite games ever made. I still go back and play it every few years thanks to KeeperFX. The atmosphere and feel is just perfect for the type of game it is.
Dungeon keeper 2 is awesome, was the marketing bad? Did it release along some other super anticipated game? Like its pretty well known in my country, everybody heard of the amazing translation made by cd projekt. There even was a nightclub in the capital named "Dungeon" which heavily resembled dungeon keeper and was apparently made in honor of that first translation.
Slow? I ran it on my 486 DX2-66, that was slow)))
I miss the days when we had many great video game companies... until EA (and I guess others but mainly EA) bought their companies as their own and messed stuffs up.

I never played it for this reason as well as the graphics which look too ugly and cartoonish
"License to Print Money". Well, only thanks to morons, that play games for the plot. Franchised Games tend to be very bad (Tv Tropes even has it as "Trope"). They should have really gone for good Gameplay instead of Harry Potter or the like. IMO, they could even have used the DK1 engine, maybe with slighter better graphics (double sprite resolution, and Truecolor). Good sprites (like Diablo 2) can look much better than crude realtime 3D. You can also get away with mire nudity in 2D. Compare the "private parts" of Troll and Orc with The Sims. Also the original Mistress seems to be a naked demon, while the DK2 one is a human in a gimp suit.

DK2 looks ugly as shit compared to the original. Some of the new mechanics are good, but DK1 is by far the superior title.
Dungeon keeper 2 absolutely ruined the series imo. Because every map had a niche you had to perform you were forced to use specific creatures every map. They was very little room for personal play style.
