I called them before I applied because I had already heard it was a “secret” issue. The lady told me it was a liability/safety issue for them. So I didn’t apply with them. I knew not was B.S. or else every flatbed company would require the same thing.
I even asked if I kept it done and styled in a way that was not hanging loose she said “it didn’t matter” 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️ I felt better for not working for them with that logic

I previously worked for TMC and am also black. They have strict grooming policies and these policies are explained in detail during orientation. There were some in our orientation class with dreads who departed the company because they were not willing to adhere to TMC grooming standards . You weren't fired because of your race, you were fired because you refused to adhere to the policy.
Even UPS had variances for grooming/appearance when it was required.

I’m a white male and been trucking 31 years. I looked into TMC years ago and they told me they run the company like the military. Clean cut facial hair and military style haircuts. They told me if I had long hair it would have to be concealed completely, or I’d be fired. Since I’m a Veteran and was already tired of military regulations I chose other employment opportunities. He should’ve been aware and signed these policies during orientation. It is a company’s right to set their appearance standards. It’s our right to work somewhere else. However, if there are other employees with the same visible appearance, but different ethnicity, that’s a huge problem. They should also be terminated immediately.

TMC is one of the last companies who actually care about their professional image. Worked for them about 15 years ago and even though I thought they were strict they definitely are professional. And I must admit that I enjoyed working for them. One of the last companies left who require professional drivers. No flip flops long hair pajama pants etc
They’ll fire you for walking on the grass but won’t maintain their equipment/engines. Typical mega BS on steroids.

Trucking has gown down the rabbit hole! It is something when a company has put out dress and grooming codes when everybody should know how to dress and groom for the job!
I would think he’d have a case if he was hired on while still having long hair. Then that would be discrimination. Policies are meant to be enforced day 1 but if they are not and he was let in WITH long hair..that’s a big fact that might win him the case.
Alex!!! When I started at TMC a "trainee" was fired for having long hair. The driver already had experience with a different company and quit because he wasn't going to get his long hair cut.
Unpopular Opinion alert: Is it legal? Sure is. More importantly, when you're hired by TMC they make it abundantly clear what the dress code and grooming standards are. And if you weren't comfortable wtih them when they hired you, then Im not sure why youre surprised about them letting you go for violating those standards. So good luck playing the race card.

He refused and played the race/culture card... He was let go for not adhering to policies, that he had to agree to AND sign.
When I started at UPS in 73 they told me You have the right to wear long hair. You do not have the right to work here. Things have changed now. Better? I do not know. The military told me long hair was too dangerous . Gas mask interference and health hazard in combat. All that went away when women joined up.🦇

@dustbat In 1984 while i was serving in the US Navy a couple of new rules came down. Prior to the new rules no one under E4 was allowed to sport facial hair. In all the services the Navy was the only one that allowed it. Well the hammer came down and boom no more beards. Those on Shore Duty hated that rule. Surface ships also hated it. I was in Submarines and our CO's were cool about it meaning once we were underway we didn't need to deal with shaving until returning to port. We were ok during port visits. The Navy was trying to say that it would interfere with wearing face masks. That wasn't true. We used to have fire drills a few times a month and no one had a problem.
I alsp worked jobs where I had to wear a hard hat and my long hair was never a problem and neither was if for the other men and women I worked with..

Now some of our drivers look scary. I almost called the cops on one who looked so scary and sloppy I thought he stole the package car!🦇

They have had the no dreadlocks policy for years. I have heard about drivers showing up for orientation getting let go for dread locks at TMC. You can also get in trouble for walking on the grass at their terminal or having a dirty truck.

@@thejosh_roberts I remember it being described the truck being inspected for cleanliness when the service was due. It was so thorough, that they would look inside the air vents for dirt. Sounded like how weapons were inspected in the military. From the description, I would never consider working for them. And, I'm retired military.
I worked for the Schneider National bulk division. They have a no beard policy. When you yell racism over grooming policies, it makes you look like an idiot.
True, but the beard policy is tied to your respirator and how it seats on your face. Hair has no bearing on how your hardhat is going to safely work for you. The hair issue is just nit picking imho.

I am so tired of looking at drivers that look like idiots and want to push the issue. I owned a small fleet and I wanted my drivers to look well groomed because they represented my company. They love playing the race card but it just doesn’t work anymore. Just like flip flops, look professional or get into another line of work. If you have a company you want your workers to look a certain way, you want to give your clients a good luck. There are many people in this country who dont take pride in themselves. Its even worse for truck drivers. And every company has grooming policies, its nothing new.

As a former tmc driver it is wrote in the code of conduct about this which you sign during orientation so if this does make it to court nothing will come of it tmc has many "name" to its meaning but "The Marine Corp." Of the trucking community is what i would give them there rules in the code of conduct are strict
This isn't a civil rights issue whatsoever!! The appearance standards are plainly spelled out from day one of orientation. They want the drivers to look respectable and be able to fit the hard hat with chin strap on. I've been with TMC for over two years, and the appearance of drivers along with clean trucks is second only too safety!! There is more to this story that's missing for sure...

Long hair vs dreadlocks. For people of color, dreadlocks are a form of care for their coarser hair, which I don’t fully understand why white people try them since it is a bit harsh on their hair type. Loose long hair gets easily trapped on anything compare to those short hair locks, so it makes no sense why he was fired. It is a culture thing, hygienic, and for those, growing their hair takes forever so a bit of pride included. Definite discrimination if others had long loose hair.

In 2014 fresh out of trucking school I had applied to t.m.c. and in fine print, It said no long hair or dreadlocks.and I had dreadlocks at that time down to my shoulder. So, I asked the recruiter at that time about that policy. He informed me that only for religious reasons that they will allow long hair or dreadlocks. I really wanted to drive for them because they still had the long hood peterbilts. I didn't cause no ruckus, I just decided that, unfortunately, I won't be able to work for them and applied somewhere else.
Then why did they hire him with hair not being cut in first thing. Why one must read, mark out what they do not agree with and under signature, ucc 1-308 but read up on 5hat cuse you will end up in jail if you cant explain it to the judge...
@@stevenkendrick5052 I am serious. If it were a woman of color targeted for the same reason these are the conditions why she wears her hair in dreadlocks. Again, makes no sense why white people do so, but to each their own. If I see a white male with long loose hair and a black male with short dreadlocks, discrimination is then classified when the black male is let go. Especially when loose hair can get stuck anywhere.

Ive been reading all these coments and I have one for you all. TMC owns the equipment ,has the customers accounts and so on , they pay the bills and pay checks. Since they have put this in their company policy , they can pick and choose who represents them on the road . Its kinda like whats going on with the rates right now .Everyone is complaining loads arnt paying . Yet people keep taking them by their own choice. This driver has a choice either fit in line to company standards or if he feels he doesnt want to adapt find another job , cause that place dosnt fit him. Nobody forced him to work there . All they said is if you want the job this is what our standards are . The employer has the right to fire anyone that doesnt conform to said company rules . You dont have to like it but it is what it is .
I gotta say that back in mid 2000s when I noticed the TMC trucks they were kept very neat and tidy. Even their chains on the headache racks were OCD organized to look symetrical.

Any company have their own policíes like:
1- Employee with no long hair or beard
2- use company uniform
3- Use Hard hat, , vest and safety shoes
The aparience of the company reflects how is the company.
Many drivers use flip flops, long hair shots so thats no Good can be confortable for the drivers but not to the company.

Hate to tell yall, TMC has always followed military regulations, you learn this in orientation. You cant now complain. I wouldnt apply an then tell them to change what they been doing.

The same thing happened to another Driver 7-8 years ago during orientation and was also let go. I see TMC Drivers everyday when loading. I will keep a lookout to see if anyone else has long hair.

I'm envious. Of the many drivers tmc let go, few of them would've been a good fit. The majority they let go, tmc saved themselves from a lot of headaches.
If your employer says "Get a haircut", get a haircut. Employers have every right to set their own standards of dress and grooming. If you don't like it, you're free to look for work elsewhere.
TMC has to many policies that sometimes don't make any sense but is their policy so if you want to work with them so you need to follow it even if you don't like it,,,,then find another jobs with so many flatbet company find a company with flip flops

I went to the TMC orientation in 2020, recruiters never told me about the “hair” policy, so in my hotel room I was reading the handbook, it says “No Braids, No dreads, no pony tail shoulder length. Next day the bus had 5 of “us”heading back home. Won’t say too much, just It’s not a place for “us”.
Former tmc driver here, the company makes it very clear about this rule to any color or gender, also they are not the only flatbed company with this policy, its a safety issue, not a race issue...

Hair is NOT a protected area like religion or sex preference so you can be fired, you can be fired for example if you have green eyed. Don't like the grooming requirements... find a different employer.

When I was looking into flatbed companies I spoke with TMC, after going over their incredibly long list of rules and regulations about absolutely everything and finding out their trucks were governed at 63mph I made my decision to work for a different company.
Everyone wants to claim victimhood while working for a company you freely decidedto sign on with. No one is forcing you to work for them you made that choice yourself. Either follow their rules or work somewhere else it's not that difficult.

I just left TMC, And for those of you that dont know, they takes 80 to 90% of your last check, even after returning the truck in a nice clean condition.
I got paid regularly when I left. Did you get your CDL through them and complete your 12 month commitment ? Damage equipment through negligence? Get towed because you parked somewhere you weren’t supposed to? They’ll deduct those kind of things weekly normally. But if you leave, they’ll get the rest on your final.
@@gleng311 No, Had my own CDL, and parked at they terminal after finishing the week with a 2 week notice, no damages.
EDIT: And prior to being hired, I personally paid for all travel expenses, to they training terminal & lodging for the week. Even tho they did offer.
If it was recently, sue them in small court. Or file complaint with appropriate federal agency. Labor department. Truckers association they will direct you with request. You need no lawyer. Check their policies and regulations. Get the written explanation why was taken 90% of your earned money, etc

The bulkiness of the hair style is not allowing the hard hat to seat properly causing diminished protection.
I’ve heard that they have similar standards as far as how clean you have to keep the inside and outside of their trucks as well. I just think thats TMC. Biggest thing for a new driver is to get on with a company that has a good reputation for safety so you develop good habits that will end up protecting you for the duration of your career.

I got my license at TMC because it was in my city. During the vice president of safety hour long speech he looked into my eyes and said don’t get out of the truck wearing you durag. I interpreted and said I don’t wear a fuk’n durag. The room of about 60 thought that was very funny. I did not.

I think this is the quickest company driver to owner operator path that a carrier has ever had.
Is the policy enforced equally? Nearly every company has policies that are not enforced, the unknown (to us) is if this is a policy that isn't always enforced.
Why did they hire him in the first place then. Makes absolutely no sense to bring him aboard then fire him. Could have simply stated this in the interview process.
They don’t do in person interviews. Everything is over the phone. And even then the grooming policies are provided prior to orientation. It’s then given to you to sign during orientation.

ehhhhhh the trucking industry as a whole is trying to findnew ways to delete drivers- he never said that he got into an accident, nothing was damaged but feelings today, the guy put on his hat and boots and went to work, I can see if this guy wasn't grooming himself and just looked jacked up on camera.

We all know this has nothing to do with safety. Yes there will be some people in the commits that will try to down play this as always. I also have locs and have worked for many flatbed companies and never have I ever been told to cut my hair for safety. My helmet fits just as good as anyone else. This was definitely discrimination hands down. Was it about race? I’m unsure but most definitely discrimination. There is no policy or law that states one has to cut their hair to properly wear a helmet. The only side of trucking known to me to have to shave is the oil field. These comments make me want to 🤮. TMC ain’t got no dang policy that you have to cut your hair and you truck drivers acting oblivious know it. There isn’t even a policy in construction that says that. OSHA states all required PPE shall be worn. Yes if a private company choose to make their own policy stating that then no they aren’t wrong but I think we all know TMC does not. That supervisor is full of crap and said that to cover is act of discrimination. Mark my words! The truth will come to light.

So yeah. TMC does have a policy. They let you know about it during the hiring process. They have you sign the policy during orientation. And it’s quite detailed. They even give you an opportunity to discuss the problem with Human Resources if it is for religious reasons.
I’m not saying the policy is right. But it is there, and you know about it when you’re hired.
@@gleng311 You are correct. TMC has a personal appearance policy that reads: Hair should be clean, combed and neatly trimmed or arranged. Shaggy, unkempt hair is not permissible. Men: hair length should be no longer than the bottom of the shirt collar and ponytails of any length or shape are unacceptable.. This is a terrible policy they have and if people want to get technical it can definitely be argued as bias, sexist and border line unconstitutional. So a woman can have long hair as long as it’s neat and she keeps it up but a man has to keep the length above the collar. Well if it’s about safety then regardless of sexual orientation long hair on either party would be a safety issue. Make it make sense? My friend went through something similar. He worked like 8 or 9 yrs for Georgia power and then he was offered a promotion to a supervisor but they also gave him a choice stay in is role or cut his braids for a promotion. Me personally a company could kiss my left and right cheek. I would never allow a company to have that much power of me.
TMC will fire anyone for anything, as people say they call it The Marine Corps (TMC) and some have said in the first 3 days of orientation like 90% of their starting class is sent home.
But they are one of the largest mega carriers in the entire country, I guarantee there are a lot more drivers that have dreadlocks and other hairstyles I don't believe they would fire someone for that and i'm also pretty sure it wouldn't be legal to do so either.

they send most of them home and probably still collect the money that they get for bringing people in for orientation .. typical mega carrier thing... just because you keep the "appearance" of the equipment up to par doesn't mean jack shit about how the people in the company really are..
TMC is a fantastic company. If it weren't for the 'OTR out all week' thing I'd still be there. Enjoyed my time in Des Moines back in 2004. Top notch securement training program. Performance based percentage pay. If you're willing to work, a man could do well for himself. Oh, and don't walk on Harrold's grass! 😅
There needs to be clearification of the State of Iowa or Illinois is a "RIGHT TO WORK STATE". If they are then this driver maybe SOL out of luck! My prayers are with you Sir! 🇺🇲🙂🇺🇲😊

@@MuthaTruckerNo you won't. TMC doesn't talk to the public. Their supervisors especially don't talk to the public. They're running a program out there that should be illegal in many regards. This dreadlocks thing isnt anything new. It's been going on long before this guy or myself ever got into the company. They require short hair for safety reasons. Read it in my handbook.

This is TMC's policy on hair length and grooming:
"Hair no longer than collar length; no ponytails/dreadlocks/braids, etc, regardless of length; no mohawks; no visible body-piercing to include earrings and tongue studs. Tattoos that contain demeaning or offensive images/text are not permitted. All tattoos must be covered while at customer locations. Beards must be neatly trimmed. Accommodation of religious beliefs in terms of grooming and/or appearance may be difficult in light of safety issues or if they create an undue hardship, however trainees requesting a workplace grooming and/or appearance accommodation based on religious beliefs should contact the Human Resources department."
Those are really kind of normal requests a guy with long hair or a beard that gets wrapped up in a piece of machinery once will probably not have that problem ever again.
There was a kid in high school that had really long hair shot under a car on a creeper it got rolled up in the wheel the next day he came in with white walls. I guess if you want to sign off saying if a beam falls on your head and kills you you can't sue the company if your beard or your hair gets rolled up in the fan belt while you're checking the oil. I'm sure they have to make some religious exceptions after all those guys don't bathe but once a month anyhow if you're if they can find water then but they sure don't mind washing the truck with the windshield sponge at the fuel Island

I am a female driver, i haul hazmat, i pull a tanker. I wear full frcs, hard hat, and face shield. My hair is 3 ft long and has never been an issue. Often i have it in a bun under my hardhat, it you place it right it will actually hold your hat on. I can hang upside-down and the bun holds my hard hat on. If you put your hair in it right it will do the same for you. If you are wondering why i twist it up in a bun... #1, i dont like chemicals in my hair, #2, i dont think that getting scalped by a pto shaft would feel very good. Sue the hell out them.
I've had long hair my whole life and never had a problem either. I usually just throw it up in a French braid. I don't want to comment on this story because we are only getting one side of it. Be safe out here sister.
Yeah-the safety issue reason given by some rings hollow to me because there are no rotating assemblies that could reel-him-in such as a serpentine belt on an engine when performing flatbed work.
@michaeldunagan8268 OK, that was confusing. I've been running flatbed and step deck for years. My hair is waist length. I just throw it in a braid and sometimes just put the braid inside my shirt.

Why in the FK do all black guys use the "race card"? Some companies have rules and regulations that require hair to be short. I was a superintendent in construction before transitioning to trucking 21 years ago and I can affirm that long hair can be a hazard in certain areas. I say there is more to this and the driver is using this as a ploy to divert from the real issue. There's some other reason for his dismissal.
He said some of his coworkers had long hair as well. So why do all white guys look over obvious double standards?

Had to hire because of Affirmative Action, like many companies just because they are BLACK, but fired because they were useless on the job. Race card entitlement has gone to your head.

For those who don't understand why this is a big deal, here's the issue with their policy:
1. If it's truly a safety issue, then they should be fine with their employees wearing their hair up. Do you think that they are telling women that their only option is to literally cut their hair, or be terminated if they do not? The fact that this isn't the case means that they are applying their policy selectively in regard to the "safety" claim that they make, which makes it discriminatory. (and that's with me leaving out the claim that the trucker made that other prospective employees in orientation were able to wear their hair at shoulder length or longer. I'm strictly speaking of how the policy is implemented.)
2. Their policy specifically states "No dreadlocks." Which is evidence that the policy was not created to mitigate issues with personal safety while at work. Because if this were the case, then they would have no problem with dreadlocks being worn at or above the neckline or collar, as their policy states is acceptable.
By basically by telling the perspective employee that his hair must be worn at or above his collar, but also that he can't have dreads at all, they invalidated their first point regarding this being an issue of safety. If it's not a safety issue, then it's a preference issue, and if it's a preference issue, then a case can be made that the policy is inherently discriminatory.
This TMC driver over here at the truckstop has long shoulder length hair.

The "safety" culture has gotten so bad, it's simply jumping through hoops to appease "Karens" instead of being safe. That being said, reading through comments by other TMC drivers, its a personal preference by owners instead of safety. If that's the case, enjoy your lawsuit. That man will have no trouble working for another Work driven carrier.

If this is allowed to go to court then there should be no standards, safety regulations or protocols. If people are allowed to sue over these types of things and win then why would a company have standards and policies at all? This is why the industry is in the dumpster. We have trashy @$$ drivers out here making every one of us look like losers, bottom of the barrel, no skill employees.
