All DOT and Cops should have pass drivers physical to drive also
I retired from LAPD and we had to pass a very extensive medical to get hired. Far more than a driver physical. We also got drug tested at random. I don't know about other agencies, I've seen some questionable officers out there, so they are probably not as strict, but we sure were checked.

Drove OTR for about 10 years. Started when I was 22. Needed Blood pressure meds when I was 28. Starting feeling high levels of stress and depression when I turned 32. Decided to find a job closer to home, I now work a regional job, off weekends, sometimes home during the weekdays for a 10 hr brk. Eating better and exercising regularly. No longer on blood pressure meds or feeling depressed or stress. The OTR lifestyle is dangerous to physical and mental health. Take care of yourselfs drivers because these trucking companies don't give a shit about you or your family. Come in the business with an exit strategy. Don't wait till it's too late.

I eat pickled red beets and bananas for 3 days before my dot physical plus lots of water. Been doing it for 3 years and my blood pressure looks great.
I had a DDT doctor require a sleep study before getting my full card so I went to another doctor and received my full card. Sometimes you need another option.
Usually, the guy demanding sleep study is getting a commission by the clinic ... So it's not a real requirement except money into his pocket
After 20 plus years of driving I put myself on anxiety meds by asking the doc . All the regulations, dot stealing my cash by fines, non English speaking driver's , crazy 4wheelers , brokers lying , shipper and receivers giving shit and the taxation without representation I quit and sold off my equipment bought some land and live like a recluse. All the time spent alone trying to be a husband and father providing a good life for them and now I'm alone and hardly spend time with them because I'm a piece of shit supposedly. Well when the money stops you find who your friends and family really are . I loved the idea of what I was doing but the rules are not for safety that is for sure . I have so much respect for the drivers out there doing the right things . And by the Way a big FU to the electronic log books. They nearly killed me more than once but when I had paper logs I never had a problem. So good luck and make sure I get my shit on time. 😊 Thanks in advance and keep the shiny side up .

I feel for you buddy. I gave my family everything I could. I wasn't perfect, but after 23 years the wife (now ex) decided she no longer wanted to be married. Our 2 daughters are grown. My oldest won't even talk to me and my youngest only calls when she needs help. I know life can be tough but when those you thought would have your back turn on you, you can't help but feel let down and feel like a failure. I know I wasn't perfect but damn, I put everything I had into my family and have literally zero to show for it. I can't help but feel as though it was a huge waste of time, money and effort. I do love my girls but when they turn their back because of the "patriarchy" (yes they drank the coolaid) you can't help but feel betrayed. Never again. Wish you all the best.

They worried about anti depressants? But steady overwhelming drivers with over regulation, low rates , no home time, and dot trying to meet their quota. Where is the win for drivers?
Unfortunately, trucking has declined steadily in the 30 years I've been driving. It's more about revenue and less about safety. D.O.T. is far too quick to throw an Out of Service rather than a verbal warning. And written warnings cant be fought. It's ridiculous.
Drivers are the problem. No one sticks together until they have to hold up traffic to enter a truck stop. There has to be millions of drivers that just take off work for at least 3 - 4 days straight. This has to be purposely done. Look at how cargo ships have situations on the sea and it affects the ports. What about the shortages of pilots who fly planes? These days you can’t get a straight through flight leaving a smaller airport. These airline pilots have their industry in a head lock. I recently read a story where passengers were sitting on their plane for hours because the airline wasn’t going to let anyone know that their pilots were still at the hotel resting due to themselves being overly worked the day before. It’s not about protesting once you’re in the truck, it’s all about staying home and pretending to be sick for a few days. This protest should be discussed over CB Radio, in restaurants, in laundry rooms, at weight stations, while at shipping / receiving offices. We will be starving soon and for those who have thousands in their savings accounts they will be digging in there soon. 30 + Billions funded for other countries wars who can’t even afford their own wars while we the tax payers just sit here and be obedient. Our youngsters will have to finish paying other countries debt and all the illegal immigrants will get vetted and do all of our jobs for cheap if we don’t act soon.

@@TutuMagooit’s a lot more than 30 billion, the last bill that was just passed 2-3 weeks ago was $100 billion for foreign wars alone, there’s been multiple others, most to Ukraine, but we’ve also been giving Israel $5 billion a year for 75 years. But yea they tryna get rid of old white men and replace em with all the Somalian skinnies you see out here now. They make there no barrier to entry to be a driver, but so many rules and regulations so that drivers won’t be able to or want to stay long. This keeps the revolving door churning for Megas, which they lobby for, and the govt is happy to oblige since if they had it their way every one would be working for 5 mega carriers. The mega carriers suck and most drivers leave after getting experience, so they would fall if it weren’t for no barrier to entry to become a driver. STOP WORKING FOR MEGA CARRIERS, I know you’re comfortable and too lazy to make changes in ur life, but you can make more money, be treated better, have better equipment, faster shop, etc and ffs again used to having the camera on you, the “yes men” working for megas for longer than 2 years are allowing this to perpetuate. They have too much power being able to be self insured and making money on a 2% profit margin because of so many trucks, while drivers are screwed, or like superego 3-4000 trucks gobbling up loads but for no reason, driver takes home $300-500 never ends up getting truck, just to make a few people in Belgrade, Serbia rich. TAKE THEM DOWN by not working for them

I’ve been a strong supporter of early retirement for all truckers as early as 50yo for working 30 consecutive years, I mean you’ve supported all public , government, and all business bringing all kinds of goods puting your selfs at risk being around different people and you’d make sure everything gets delivered on time ,at the end of the day this is truly the public servent role .I hope FMCSA becomes as safe as posible $5 to 7k a month from government as retirement monthly check, shouldn’t be too bad , safe and sound ! Maybe you’ll be able to go on your well deserved vacation for the whole month now .

@@pdotdollarsign I went back to my original profession. Armed Security. And since I live in the San Francisco Bay area, we are in a high demand. I now make $58 an hour at Kaiser. 40 hours a week I know my schedule. I know what time I’m going to be home. Life is now good. Trucking was fun at one time. It’s not the same. You just have to make a decision and jump in the pool.

Just went back to driving after a triple bypass. Turned all my documents into my doctor from my cardiologist. On a one year medical card.

That sleep apnea change is fantastic.
It was scam that went on for far too long. Megas would hire their own in-house doctor to basically put as many people on the machine, which would they would charge the drivers exhorbitant monthly fees to use, and they werent allowed to use any machines from 3rd party. The companies and the doctor would make $$$$ in kickbacks from machine manufacturer.
I started in 2015 and when I saw so many people getting taken by that one I quickly realized that I would never under any circumstance disclose anything about my med history to any trucking company. For dot cert questionaires with all the check boxes saying "Have you ever...?" I check no no no no no all the way down the list. These people will destroy your life to save a dollar.
That’s crazy , I had left a good local job because I had to get my medical recirt again. I’m big and tall but pretty active young and show none of the signs of being tired . Mentioned it all to the dot doctor whatever you wanna call it and I had to do a sleep apnea test because the neck was at that measurement. So I did it went to a 3rd party and results mentioned it was mild like stupid low on the chart . They still recommended I get a machine and it was kind of a bummer because I mean I know myself and felt like that 3rd party was just trying to make money like how the pharmacies do .
I'll be getting out of a truck in about 6mos. I can't wait, counting the days.

I was on anti depressants Prozac and caught hell getting my med card renewed had to jump through some hoops. My doctor had to fill out a sh$& load of papers asking was I suicidal hell no I wasn’t life just be lifing and I had just lost my brother

I came off the road 20 years ago but still run Florida Georgia and Alabama hauling equipment! My company sends me to a clinic to do my physical and all they wanna do is the the neck measurement to make me do a sleep apnea test! Come to find out the company that owns them owns the test center and rents the sleep apnea machine!!! I screwed them though I lost 45lbs in the last 6 months and my necks 3 inches smaller than it was 2 years ago!!!
My husband takes blood pressure medication, and he is only eligible for a 1 year DOT card. He went in to renew it, and he now has to do a sleep study because of his measurements. He doesn't snore unless he has a cold or his allergies are acting up.

That b.s. I got 2 stints four years ago you probably couldn't pass stress test you have to do a stress test every 2years I passed both on the treadmill not using the medication they give you to check your heart
I drive for one of the big companies. One of our drivers were forced to dock work only once because he was on medication that caused drowsiness and had to prove from his doctor he went off it and had to take a urine test to prove it before they put him back on the road.
They took my CDL a few years back, Am retired but have a truck still. Where is my none commercial license? Used to be able to get Special Chauffeur. I read my State law real careful, I believe i can drive (Not For Hire) local on a regular class A license. This whole mess, brought to you by department of homeland security.

@@imshaunnurse Filled out the physical waver papers for intra state not for hire. Paid for tracking and sent them off. Received the confirmation that they had received the papers. A few weeks later received a letter of revocation.
I went Monday they said I have lose 30 lbs or take a sleep apnea exam. I'm 6'3 281 can touch my toes, turn my head, 20/20 vision. I smell Bull$hit.

There other things they consider for sleep apnea. Neck size and what type of mouth you have. Some people are thin and still have to test because of their mouth neck.
Go to another doctor, if they ask tell them concentra tested you a couple years ago

I'm 5 11 270 just went Monday 2 year certification. Just find a different a different place.

I'm on CPAP I hate it it wakes me up at least 3 times a night and dry mouth feels like my mouth is on fire I hate it so much

Alex, I kinda think this isn't all that new. I think they have just clarified standards. If a driver is taking one of the listed meds, he has always needed a statement from the treating physician. A couple of meds are auto disqualifying. One of them is the anti-smoking drug; I think it's Chantix (?), but not sure thats the right name. It has been known to cause hallucinating and periods of manic activty. Of course, I retired in 2021, so there might be some new changes. Anyway, thanks for all you do to keep drivers informed. Also, insulin thru injection disqualifies for interstate operation, but intrastate is allowed. Waiver can be requested for interstate operation, but very, very few ever get approved
thanks! yeah old rule was that you had to have a Letter for anti- depress meds but now its an option if their doctor wants a letter or not, but I think the sleep apnea not being a regulation anymore is gonna be big for some.
Because im on meds for being pre diabetic and have higher blood pressure they will only give me a 1 year physical card until i come off the medications.

Get a blood glucose meter, and keep track of your level daily... best time is when you get up and before eating anything. Best thing you can do for yourself is to kick your sugar habit.
Look into a carnivore diet.

Hello, I have not heard of such a thing. Yes, if a driver is taking any type of medication, they must let a company and any DOT clinic know when they are doing their physical. When it comes to any Psych meds or anything that pertains to anxiety...yes the driver must inform the DOT doctor. However, they do not have to disclose the reasons why they are taking the meds... due to the HIPPA laws. Because that is not their primary Physician. That is considered on a need to know bases. The problem comes in when the driver is drug tested and the drug lab sees those prescriptions in the drivers system. But those are not part of the drug panel that is being run for a drivers' drug test. which then means that the operating DOT drug test clinic is now trying to violate the patients right...which is the driver. Now, if the driver is taking a narcotic, then yes...there is reason to question the driver and where the drug was prescribed. Other than that, there is , nor has it ever been a reason for a DOT clinic to question a driver all these years about it. When it comes to that silly neck test, those were test typically given by places like Concentra, as well as other low budget clinics. For over two years now, there have been many trucking companies whom have claimed that they no longer use Concentra or who ever these low budget clinics were...because they were falsely doing this to drivers. Meaning that they would say that the drivers neck was to big...so he/she must have sleep apnea. Then the driver would be responsible to pay for the sleep study. So in turn, that puts the driver out of work for quite some time. It was bogus, and a scam...because the driver would have to go to whom ever they referred them to. When it comes to mental health and meds. Well, I would have to say that there are many truck drivers that I know, whom are men and women that actually take Psych meds and it has yet to affect their jobs, nor has it ever been a question raised in their DOT exams. I write this as a Proud Truck Driver MYSELF!!! Because if that's the case, then they'll start getting rid of drivers that have felony cases and convictions!!! At the end of the day, it's simply hogwash and they're talking out of the side of both sides of their necks!!!

Here’s the deal, 2 years ago I went through this same thing and the problem is that the dr is scared to say that you won’t have side effects because you could even if you don’t and will not sign off on it therefore the dot dr will not give you your card and just like that you will be out of a job. Trust me I tried to fight it and lost at every turn and lost a 29 year career of driving. Good luck
Don’t tell them anything! The place I go to is part of a hospital and they do the very least! I memorized the eye chart, my BP is always good (thankfully) and although I’m a little overweight nothing has ever been said.

Same as dope? No, a long way from it also. I was upfront about and tested positive for it. But honestly I'm a truck detailer and only pull trucks in and out of a bay to clean chicken haulers. So not exactly driving nor glamorous job. Glad you doctors chimed in tho
I have heard about this. And I talked to a DOT doctor about this he told me that he would not sign any release because he afraid if something happens they would come after he because he released that driver to keep driving. I do understand the doctor fears. I hope other doctors will sign off drivers to keep working.

If anyone is on antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication, I believe this is not the best career choice, or they should not be allowed. Many of these medications can cause addiction. and if individuals stop taking them, they may have episodes while driving, which is dangerous. Just my two cents

I think they’re worried about the side effects of anti depressants. I let truck drivers be assholes. I don’t hold anything against them. I want them to talk about good things but I don’t demand them to take antidepressants. I would be lying if I said I don’t relate. Yeah some of them are strait up mean but majority of the time they’re projecting a bad situation. Trucking companies have all theses sensors that call you back to the headquarters. Mechanics take forever to fix your truck. All that time lost, yeah, it can make things financially stressful. The office guys are scared of you because they don’t relate to what truckers are going through.
Saw a driver for Snake Transportation out of Texas try an use his truck as a battery ram against another trucker in a yellow frieghliner coming down 55 threw little rock Arkansas this Saturday. I do believe the yellow truck may of cut off the snake driver first by not looking for changing lanes for a truck brokedown on the side of the road. But I was behind them going 75, got to keep your head space right, expecially in high stress and high stakes situation. Just saying I don't appreciate you all putting my life in jeopardy. God had to get that off my chest and put it out there.
In georgia if you are 10 pounds over weight depending on your age and height . You will have to take a sleep apnea test. And they give you 3 months to take the test. If you have to use a
CPAP machine you have to start using it before your 3month certification is up. Or your license will be susp
I have been driving for the last 7 years on anxiety meds and have always had to get a doctor's note for my med. This rule has been around for a while.

I was told I am obese and I need a sleep study to prove I don't have sleep apnea??? They gave me a temporary medical card for six months to complete it.
I’ve known several drivers quit driving because of sleep apnea crap.
Had a doc give me one of these and I never took one and saved the bottle and prescription as I know how this stuff works. What they look at is "how to get rid of drivers". Will also be used to take your second amendment rights. Do not tell them you snore. Was hoping they would lower the hearing standards. Good report thanks. In my day company could add some things on to physical. How that is today I do not know. Always a stress to take dot test.🦇
Just had my DOT done and the Dr. told me that the new regulations for 2024 stated, I had to get a sleep study done before he could give me a year card. Was wondering if he was bs-ing me (different dot dr.. My regular guy is doing them anymore).
Donate blood the morning of your test and there will be no high blood pressure ; as the actual volume of blood has been reduced. Be careful though if you have moderate or mild symptoms it could make pressure appear low.
just got mine renewed and if your overweight you will be ordered to do a sleep apnea test too. It’s getting harder to get a card!

I haven't driven in over 5 years even though I still technically hold a CDL with an expired medical card. That said, if you don't tell them what meds you're on how are they going to know? I'm thinking we all need to start approaching this like old army, even if they ask don't tell

I want to know why the DMV in California gave a NON-SPEAKING OR READ ENGLISH person a CDL. At my DOT Physical a guy could not fill out his paperwork because he did NOT SPEAK OR READ English. The co-worker filled out the paperwork. I AM BEYOND PISSED!!!

yeah, in the old 2015 handbook it states that specifically for anti-depress medication you had to have a anual letter, now that letter is optional, Looks like the dot physical update is making it easier to pass in my opinion
I hade to do this in 2015 when I was on meds they have always ask for a paper from your doctor when you take meds to make sure it's safe to be on the road they must have just got on there meds and had to take a DOT test

Every DOT has a sheet to fill out and it says are you taking medication if you lie about it and the doctor signs off on it and you work for a company and you get into a accident thats it for you.

Medically assisted treatment like Suboxone can not be a disqualification.they have a lady who sued a company because they didn't hire her based on her taking Suboxone and won.bottom line is the doctor said she had no problem driving while taking it and the HR department said she couldn't so the attorneys and judges decided that the HR lady doesn't know more than the doctor about how she reacts to her medication.

I'm not going to mention the company's name, but a certain mega carrier out of Springfield, MO had a lucrative sleep apnea scam going when I got hired on in 2013. I had sleep apnea back in '95 and I had surgery to correct the problem. I never had a post surgery sleep study done because I lost insurance coverage after my surgery so this carrier made me take one. They conducted the study there, charged me $1,200, then sent the results to a third party doctor in OKC to review the results and make recommendations. I received notice that he stated that I needed to be on a CPAP. I got a copy of the results myself and guess what? The results actually showed that I tested NEGATIVE for sleep apnea. I spoke with the person in charge of conducting the sleep studies, she looked at the test and concured with me... NEGATIVE. She got on the horn with that third party scammer in OKC and he said that he misread the results. Misread my åss! He was probably getting kickbacks from the carrier since the carrier was charging drivers for the sleep studies, the doctors, and for the CPAPs. 🤬
This is not new at least in Virginia, although I believe it’s universal across all states since it’s a DOT reg, even June of last year this was this case as I fall under these circumstances. It could be that the driver in question hadn’t had a physical for a year or two and now became aware of it upon recertification. Drivers on these meds are required to have a physical once and year, others required every two years.
This is insane! I don’t know many physicians that will absolutely say that ANY of those meds are 100% safe or without side effects…. It sounds like they want to be able to go after the doctors with lawsuits if the driver has any accidents down the road. This will stop people from seeking help for anxiety disorders. All medications have possible reactions and side effects.

Just an FYI for parents out there (little outside of trucking). Understand if you think the military may be an option for your kids or military service is a family tradition, any mental health diagnosis or childhood use of anxiety or psych medications is a automatic denial for service (more Gov everywhere).

i just got a new d.o.t one year. im on something for pain in my knees but its allso an antidepressant and my d.o.t doc pressed me hard for why i was on it and was even going to call the prescribing doctor but then kind of decided to just let it go.i was on it last year and nothing was said so this makes sense to me now.

Any type of phychotropic drugs disqualify you from driving semi. There is no letter DOT going take to release you to drive period. This driver should have kept his mouth shut. All these medications make you drowsy. Most companies usually fire you after finding out you on these drugs.
The reason that the DOT physical examiners are doing that now it's because if someone is involved in an accident in a commercial motor vehicle and they are taking any form of medication and they were listed as physically safe and fit to drive then these lawyers that are so cutthroat are even going after the medical examiners now so they are trying to limit their liability and put it back on the prescribing physician, that's just like me I take pain medication that I have been on for 10 years, and the doctor that I see , it's not the one that does my DOT physical, then I have to have him do paperwork stating that he prescribes saying that they prescribed me the medication and it will not affect my abilities to operate the truck, and like I say the reason that they do that is to take the liability away from the person that does the DOT physical and presents you as fit and safe to operate a commercial motor vehicle, sold that if anything ever happens it keeps them from being liable in a lawsuit...
Keep up the new rules and FMCSA, Clearinghouse and DOT will be seeing legal matters not enforcing the laws they have.
