- Hey Good People,
I haven't seen a Scion XB in a long time lol. I was surprised to get one into the shop recently. I can't remember the last time I seen one on the road in my area.
The customer complained that the transmission was hanging up in gears before shifting or not shifting like it's suppose to. In this video, I go on a test drive and take you guys along on my diagnostic process.

That's what Scion xB owners in the Scion xB club call them "Brick" and "Box" and "Toaster."" Room, rare style great on gas, and usual Toyota reliability. The more people hate them, the more we love them.

My initial thought was Throttle Position Sensor. I've been working on Toyotas for over 20 yrs, and I'd be amazed if the transmission was the problem. People call the first generation xB "toaster" because of it's boxy shape. Lol.
A Toaster 😂. I agree Toyota transmissions are amazing I only seen/ replaced 2 in my 15 years of auto repair

I have this same car, & it sounds the same, but for the past couple days that acceleration sound is a bit louder, almost like a rrrrrrrrr sound when I first turn it on & when I accelerate, would you happen to know what this may be?
I have an 04 scion xb. Its my sons. Recently, gauges and cluster light up and radio shuts off. Have you experienced this? One of the times it threw code DC P2716: PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID "D" ELECTRICAL (SHIFT SOLENOID SLT). We shut off the engine and code went away. Hasnt done it since.
I have a Scion xB with the same kind of problem but mine is a manual just change the fluid, the ABS light and check engine light were blinking every time I was driving at high speeds when I slow down the check engine light then went away. When I'm parked in the engine is idling it sounds like it's either about to blow up or break? Three lights on the dash, car overheats at high speeds at high gears, and at low gears or all the time it just does not shift properly into the gear and jerks back and forth like something is clogged or something but I don't have a filter in my manual transmission right
So is it a tps sensor? I’m having issues too it’s only been happening going uphill I lose power the rpm needle is up and down it’s like the car struggles to shift it happens on my way to work so far not in the morning but only up hill never on a flat road I checked my trans fluid it’s still red and it’s been shifting hard from park to drive or reverse 06 scion xB
It's interesting that a TP sensor is going to affect the transmission shifting.
I have a different type of vehicle 2009 matrix that is drive by wire. Keep getting p211 which is WOT and it doesn't have any effect on the shifting
What dash lights are lit when test driving??
Alex when the car was idling was the engine vibrating? Having the same shifting issues with my Sion but there are no engine lights but when I’m idling the car runs like a motor boat. Changed all the obvious spark plugs air filters and even intake manifold gasket thinking there might be a leak but nothing has solved the shaky idle. Car drives a little fine but after I changed transmission fluid it seems to slip every once in a while. Can a bad air conditioning compressor cause a rough idle? I’m wondering if the compressor is wearing out and possibly dragging engine
Hello there a bad compressor will make your engine run funny but that will eventually make the belt slip or break it your engine mounts are most likely the culprit start their first as far as your transmission try Lucas transmission stop slip
I bought a 06 xb last summer.my brother inlaw has his 06 from original owner and has continued to do maintenance from the xb manual his is sitting at 546000 in change and original auto trans and engine.

I accidentally cut a wire that connected to the computer port to the eletric power steering motor..... once we got those connector butts in, we were good.
Now I didn't see him actually do the process, but my question is, The wires that you insert into the both ends, do they have to touch inside? Or is everything metal inside so all you have to do is pinch it down?
Would you do shrink wrap around wires that are near hot parts ? Or what would u use?
Hey buddy and thanks for watching. The book connectors are metal inside so they just need to be crap down. I would definitely shrink wrap the wires and if the wires around anything like the exhaust you would need to put a heat blanket around it
I have a Sion Xb 2005 when I turn on the car put on drive it don't move,after a while it's warm than it move,

So did the throttle position sensor fix the tranny shift problem?
So from my own experience with transmissions , if the OBD senses a malfunction , it will put the tranny into lower gear (limp mode) to prevent the driver from doing further damage in higher gears. So her tranny is functioning but is going to see better days . she caught it early so that was smart of her not to ignore the symptoms
Hi Alex. I had a similar issue with mine. Switched the transmission and at exactly 2k rpm it makes a rattling noise? Do you have any suggestions?

All her lights are on, ABS, TRAC, ect.I noticed that on the first drive...on my 06 it will throw those if you don't use 89 with no ethanol. That is the only thing I could do to keep that off in my 06. No codes even after scan.... My 05 can use anything.....also on the Transmission dipstick it literally says, 'Transmission Fluid Never Needs To Be Changed.' But just replaced my Trans Filter and added fluid this weekend.
Great video bro. I think this is the 1st video I’ve found/seen that addresses this issue. I have a 2005 Scion xB with the same exact issue. Hopefully that’s my car’s issue when I take it to the shop. If not… would you know how much would a transmission cost be?

I have a similar issue but to replace the transmission its gonna cost me about $1300
I’m having a similar issue except it’s one the 3-4 or 3rd to overdrive shift, the coolant light will be blue when engine is cold and if I time it right and I’m driving when the light turns off it’ll shift to 4th, if I come to any kind of stop or downshift to 3rd it will not shift back to 4th. If anything like this is related idek if it’ll shift if I rev it all the way out cuz top of 3rd is almost 95mph and that box ain’t goin that fast 🤣

Hey Alex, that sounds like a Transmission problem to me. Not shifting properly.
Hey there and thanks for watching. The repair fixed the shifting problem. I don’t claim to be a transmission expert lol, I leave that to UA-cam channel Precision Transmission. But I do know the transmission relies on engine sensors in order to shift properly. Like the mass airflow sensor and throttle position sensor just to name a couple.

Is it shift solenoid B?
The problem with this vehicle was A damaged throttle positioning sensor wire. No transmission codes. The car‘s computer is pretty good at picking up transmission faults you will quickly get a error code for a shifts Solenoid if that was an issue

My guess would be a torque converter or a shift solenoid. This is making my guess at the indicated point of video before he tells us what it really is.
My car has the P0511 I changed the idle sensor but still it keeps coming up!
P0511 is a circuit code. Normally that’s related to the wiring. Double check the connector, the pigtail, and the surrounding wires of the idle sensor.
Ok, I’ll check it again. Do you know if there is a fuse to that wiring?

You don’t know this, but the CEL never comes on alone. ABS and VSC automatically trigger with ANY CEL code
If you come across a first Gen that isn’t lit up like a Christmas tree on the dash lmk 😂😂😂 our charcoal canister was shit and trips 3 of the lights on the dash. I currently have the same issue as this one, but I have a manual. Mine was also in 1st gear and if I let up off the gas then pressed it again it would engage 1st. I don’t think it’s my transmission though. Mine has now actually jumped out of gear and is now stuck in neutral. It feels like it’s shifting but if I disengage the clutch the engine continues to run. 😩

That rust isn’t too bad. She probably spent a winter there or maybe two and then decided she was a southern girl. Rust is an unfortunate way of life up here.
My transmission was working perfect. Until I ran over a bunch of grass that was high. Enough to pull my Rear bumper Halfway off. Reverse will not work and i'm terrified to drive it. The mechanic said he didn't work on transmissions and he refused to even look underneath.. Underneath. I live alone and I need transpo halfway off .
He said just drive it and don't park any place where I have to reverse? ?? I'm terrified !

Could be just in limp mode cause by other issue
Moving the battery out of the car might help
