this video is an overview on how to do the 5th gear swap using an 03+ corolla 5th gear Into first gen scion XB manual transmissions to lower your freeway engine rpms by about 500 rpm
Hey man thanks for the video. Very knowledgeable. I’m about to do this job next tuesday for my buddy. When you are using that 36mm socket to push on the gear, what kinda bolt are you using to thread into shaft? So I know what to get at hardware store. Also at 15:39, that’s called a bearing knife?
I believe the bolt was an 8mmx1.5 not sure how long it was. And yeah at least around here's its called a bearing knife, can also be called a bearing separator
Hey man. So I damaged a tooth on the first gear you take off with the puller. Can you please help me find a new one? I don’t know what that gear is called. Other than that it’s going well. Got the other gears off smoothly & reinstalled. The gear you torque to 87ftlbs, how do you torque that down w/o spinning the gears?
It should increase highway mileage. I changed tire sizes at the same times so my results aren't accurate for everyone but I did have an increase in mileage either way
Greetings, Thanks for sharing this video, very informative. I have a 2006 xB with some clutch/transmission problems . May I contact you via private message to seek your advice?
Since I changed tire size at the same time and sold it a few weeks later I don't have an accurate answer to that question. I didn't do much freeway driving with it as it was. Just didn't like the high rpm when I did use the freeway
I have a rs1 with 3rd gone . I swapped the trans out done the 5th gear swap same one as you described and the car feels like riding with the e brake pulled just a bit
@thomas screws yeah, it's definitely got more of a load in 5th gear after the swap but didn't have any effect on the rest of the gears or behavior when I was done
Wow what a great idea. I have been listening to the 4K rpm, freeway wail, for 19 years, so far.
You're better with one hand than most guys using two! Thanks for the vid!
Great video.
Zip tie on the puller claws is a great tip
Excellent video! You are very knowledgeable and have great teaching skills! Thank you
I could definitely see you doing more videos. Definitely good information.
Very nice! Thank you for doing this. Iv'e wanted to do this in future.
Very informative! Thanks. Wish me luck 😂
Good luck!
Damn good video, the video and audio quality is on point!
Great video and thanks for the help.
Absolutely a great video. You have a new subscriber
Awsome video 🙂 very informative
Great video, wish it was for a 2nd Gen. Do you know if the procedure is similar?
I wish I had access to a lift!
I'm not sure which transmission the 2nd gen uses so I'm not sure whats available for them or able to be done
Nice swap! Now, the question is. What the rpm @60, @70 and @80mph?
About 500 rpm less than typical across the board

@TimmyRiversMusic I'll do some looking and see if I can find a part number. More than likely only able to get it from the dealership
@magifab_503 hey are you sure its a m8 1.5 bolt? Having a hard time finding it.
Hey. on the bolt to press on the with the synchronizer, you said it 8mm 1.5 bolt but im having trouble finding it. Its not a 8mm 1.25?@magifab_503
Is this the 0.725 5th gear set?
@jaggass not sure the ratio, this is the 05 corolla 5th gear, lowers cruising rpm by 500
I plan on doing this soon.will this give better fuel economy at highway speeds since lower rpms?
It should increase highway mileage. I changed tire sizes at the same times so my results aren't accurate for everyone but I did have an increase in mileage either way
Do video update for scion xb 5th gear driving from 0 to 80 please
Do you want hard acceleration or regular?
@@magifab_503 bro"tanks for the replay!..from 0 to 60 or 70 regular and harb acceleration...will be great 👍 Tanks again
@solrac7918 I don't own the car anymore but I can still use it whenever. So it might be a little bit but I'll get one for you
Hello,
If you are in the Los Angeles area, would you do this for a customer?
If I were in the area I would but I'm up in oregon
Thanks for the response
Does thiz work on automatic??
@@NothingToProveTM no,this only applies to the 5spd manual
@@magifab_503 Thanks for the fast reply! I thought i was getting lucky lol.
@NothingToProveTM I think the only way to lower cruising rpm with an automatic is to change the final drive ratio which is way more involved

I'm not aware of any ability to private message on UA-cam 🤔
What were your mpg gains on freeway?

Does this swap change the ratio on 5th Gear or the whole transmission
It only changes the 5th gear ratio

Where do yo get these gears?
I got mine on rockauto.com for a 2004 Toyota corolla 5spd
@@magifab_503 Those are the gears being used from a Corolla?
@Bart Mormino yes, the scion xb/xa and corolla used the same basic transmission so there are some parts that interchange
this for manual or automatic tranny?
Manual transmission
