- Saturday Night and Sunday Moring & The West Side, live in Berlin. This is taken from the multicam DVD Live in Berlin. On this edit you can watch Phil play drums all the way through on the seperate camera angles.
I believe that somewhere in the world, there are people who feel the same emotions that I feel when I listen to masterpieces like this song.
So many Phil Collins haters........why? Because the guy can literally do everything.
They are very lousy People. No talent for nothing, besides, spread criticism.
Absolutely! Bloody LOVE Phil Collins! X
I love him, I just think we suffered an overdose in the eighties
But this is the nineties
He knows the ‘sound ‘ he wants .
The fact that Chester Thompson kept that high hat pattern throughout THE ENTIRE FREAKING SONG is mind boggling. Phil is great, but Chester's tempo synchronicity throughout a song with off beats and meter changes deserves it's own award.
Absolutely true...im an amateur drummer...and playing that pattern for that long is hard, hard work...Chester Thompson is a beast
Caiosama205 yep, a seriously hard groove to master, some of Chester’s work is awesome.
he's a human metrodome, takes s LOT of disipline to play like that.
He went through the school of Zappa. Phil's stuff is not challenging for Chester.
@@knust2329 - this
Chester and Phil were magical together.
This is "selling out?" The truth is Phil always kept at least one foot firmly planted in progressive rock and jazz fusion, even when he was recording massive pop hits.
he's always been "progressive pop/art rock" type of thing. you can hear it all in his sound. phil is great
1:48 🥁🎷🎸🎹😛🙃💓💓💓👏👏👏👏👏
Sonia Lezon Oh yeah!
people who say shit like "sellout" and stuff are either very angry he chose to carry genesis and be the frontman after peter left, or they are jealous of phil collins success WITH and WITHOUT genesis. people are very weird
Great comment 👍
it's insane how Chester can keep that pattern going on throughout the entire song! A world class drummer right there! And it's great to see how enthusiastic Brad Cole was during the whole thing.
This man is no doubt one of the greatest of all time . I could care less what the haters think - they are shallow in their hate .
Unfuckingbelievable. Everything is perfect. That Noble & Cooley snare just finishes off this amazing part of history.
that snare sounds heavenly.
this to me when Phil was on the top of his game.. Very cool transitions all around .. great musicians..
Chester is solid as a rock, Brad Cole is a superb keyboard player (I love how into it he is by the end...singing along without a mic!), Phil is a musical genius, and the rest of the band is pretty good too ;) It really doesn't get much better than this. Musical snobs who dismiss PC's music as 'lightweight' only reveal their ignorance. The arrangement of this piece is perfect too. It is music of a caliber only made by the best.
Here it is September, 2022, and I miss Phil's brilliance - I miss his drumming. It was Phil that got me interested, ... and loving instrumentals. Phil's music has the ability to transport me to another dimension. I'm undeniably so grateful for him and the technology that allows me to re-live each moment time and time again. Thanks, Phil, for the memories 💕💖
Yeah, I play the ‘Chester’ part to this track as a warm up and it’s one of the most difficult beats I’ve played. If I pull it off I’m buzzing and have good gigs...if I don’t I know I’m off...He doesn’t miss a beat! Although Phil is great.Chester Thompson must be one of the most underrated drummers of all time. He played Genesis and Collins solo for 30 years or more, can’t ever remember him missing a beat, dropping a stick or anything. Watched him live don’t know how many times. His humility is awesome! He didn’t do Phils last tour, neither did Phil.I do hope he’s a multi millionaire living in a place knowing he was the back bone of two of the best touring bands of all time!
Well, the man is still doing what he loves, which is playing drums. I don't know if he's a millionaire, but he still performs regularly.
Well said, Kenneth.
He also played with Zappa. Chester's got himself a hell of a CV.
Been seeing Phil with and without Genesis since 1976. Never disappointed me. Every show was great. On a side note, Chester drops a stick during Los Endos , it’s on one of the videos but if you blink you’ll miss it. Lol.
Don’t forget that he was also part of Frank Zappa’s band, as well as Weather Report.
This song is magic, jazzy, smoothie, bluesy...progressive...from his best 1982-album. I want to have it on cd
I m married but he's my date. I m in love with this man. I m 43 y'o and I listen this since I'm 14. And I can't get enough.
I was at the Chapel Hill, NC stop of this tour! AMAAAAAAAAZING!!!! Lee Sklaar was even playing bass at that show! All musicians were top of the top notch! Phil jammed!
Never heard something like this before. My heart and my soul were touched so deeply by these sounds. Thank you ❤️🙏
I can only assume the 25 people who disliked this have some form of brain damage.
Gotta love Phil. Virtuoso drummer who NEVER overplays!
Yeah, and Daryl Stuermer is virtuoso guitarist! Tough guy!
I had the pleasure of going to the Wembley arena concert of this tour with my parents and older sister I would have been 14/15 years old, just amazing
I would like to emphasize the incredible talent of Chester to play this complicated rhythmic pattern with a perfect rhythmic independence throughout the song and throughout this huge tour of 90 but also in 1982 -83 and 1985! more than hundreds of times
I didn't understand how much work that went into putting his tour together until I watched a documentary of another tour he did. I can't remember which one It was. I'm pretty sure it was a later tour.
Anyway, it was exhausting just watching Phil dealing with thousands upon thousands of details everyday for about 8 weeks of just the rehearsals.
So, when I see this, I think of all the work it took for him to finally get up on the stage for this show. And when he gets there, all he has to do is remember and perform his top-flight show.
To me, it's mind boggling
ddrose06 Phil Collins was known for being a workaholic. His first wife said this contributed to their divorce.
I think there's a documentary for the Both Sides tour and there's one for the Final Farewell, could have been one of those two.
Legend , one my fav of all time , Phil Collins is a Pandoras box of great music for real , he can make time move or stand still magicmusic

That moment when the keyboards escalates is just priceless
@Thorsten Hessler That's because in the original stereo mix, the keyboards weren't as apparent as in this audio mix
The master at his best
Chester was great on this. He and Phil were absolutely incredible together. This song deserves a lot more love and respect than it receives.
Man, that has got to be the best sounding snaredrum I've ever heard. Give it up for the Noble & Cooley SS 14x3.8 Piccolo... And whoever tuned it 🤗 Perfect match for those gorgeous Gretsch USA Custom black nitron concert toms
I have a couple of N&C snares… the 3.75” pic is next on the list 😉
Great track, improvisation from the keyboard player was also awesome...
Just love to watch him drumming. Drumming is his life. The fact that he is such famous drummer and singer, he still willing to drum for other singers back then and Phil is truly humble hearted man. Hope his health will be better soon so he could drum again today. Stay safe Phil Collins 😘😘😘
My god, you can feel that energy and connection between phil collins and his keyboardist, especially during the soloing sections for percussion. Just pure raw improv. Inspiring!
I just really really enjoyed watching Phil Collins play that drum and hearing him sing with that beautiful voice of his and also everybody else is doing an awesome job they were all jamming
Phil your ability to play and change from one drum to other
music and you talents gotten everything
My lovely 😊 man
The volume as to be cranked up on this ! The drums and bass in this is bloody Awesome!! OMFG !
Magical! I could watch him behind the drums for ages ♥️
In 1982 I saw his first solo concert in Brussels and this song blew me away.
the master with his best drum solo ever (+with his jazz band in 96 + in 1994 too :)
All brilliant musicians no matter what.Love them all.Went to see the Not dead yet concert in Paris.Wish I had seen Phil in his prime , but life always in the way , his son Nick does a great job on the drums, though much more to learn. I am sure he will be an awesome talent one day and keeps the Collins music tradition alive. After all Phil did own the 1980's music scene.,.
Masterclass
God I love this, genius at work.
Yeah...Yeah...Yeah-ha! Excellence! 11:08 of pure joy! What fabulous musicians! Thank you for sharing this gem!
THE LEGENDARY EVER IN HISTORY
PHILL COLLINS
EARTH WIND AND FIRE
CHESTER THOMPSON
How do you NOT show The Phenix Horns ar all ?!
And he played left handed. Like me. Alan Dawson hated when I said I had to switch his set at lessons. But, he let me. Thanks Alan. Thanks Phil for letting me be myself!
This video is an exercise in the relative passage of time as one ages.
When I used to watch this song on the VHS when I was 5 or 6 it seemed to go on forever. Now, 30 years later, it seems to be over in an instant!
Very inciteful comment my friend. Worth reading!
I love it at 2:45 when He gives one of the horns a piece of gum!!!! ...soooo chill!
The "gum" is actually Grether's Pastilles, which helps keeping his voice from going sore and hoarse.
@@TheAmarok87 how do you know this behind the scenes info?...& are they chewy or hard ?... sure looks like he's chewing gum..as well?
INCREDIBLE
What this and any visual of Phil Collins drumming does is show you how the heck he does things. You have to remember, dating myself but, before VHS there was no way to see! What I learned then about Phil's drumming is although it is a left handed kit he plays more ambidextrous than anything. And THAT is how he never loses a beat switching over.
So there! Really happy to see this, haven't tried playing it in 30 years.
This keyboard dude.. Brad I think his name was... was fucking amazing. kept time brilliantly with phil
turbocat1984 - That's Brad Cole. Not only a fantastic keyboard player and Vocoder wizard, but also a loyal friend of Phil's. Watched a TV show recently where Phil was sitting and visibly struggling with health and keeping himself together. Brad was right there, playing the piano, looking at Phil. motivating him and even singing backing vocals. As in: No worries, I got this and I'm here buddy - always, without coming off as patronizing or trying to draw attention. Loved it.
I'm a pro keyboardist and a piano teacher too. And I can 2nd your comment. This guy is GOOD!
thanks for the best Phil
Phil’s foot was so deceptively fast. This song and even obscure songs like “Man Of Our Times” reveal how fast he could get that foot pumping when the occasion required.
Hands a mint to Daryl at 2:45 ..Class!
gcrichards1 I think it's a wine gum 😋
It's Grethers Pastilles! They have always been Phil's favorite because they're good for the throat and voice 😉
Chewing gum
There's a Genesis show in which he gives him water
It’s funny that I came to this clip just to see if anyone would know what Phil was chewing. I love licorice and always wondered if that was it. But it sounds like it’s a particular British candy Grethers Pastiles! Wow, the stuff you can find on the internet.
the only one west side live for me just perfect ;) epic music.
Phil the Perfectionist
Fabulous ! The Perfection. 2022 Phil still THE BEST. From Paris, Thanks for this video.
This kicks ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That kit sound is perfection, listing with my headphones on and it’s insane, Phil man, what a drummer, not his best work on the kit but it just sounds incredible and it’s far beyond my ability.
The Sax though, gorgeous
Great track, one of his best live.
Does anybody know Collins drumming in early Genesis (1971-1977) and in fusion band Brand x? That is best Phil Collins drumming of ever...
Phil Collins is the best
There is no other drummer on this planet that can do this, not that they'd want too, but any drummer worth their salt knows what I mean
Owen Ltd I agree Phil is the BEST! What do you mean no one would want to do this? Phil composed some brilliant instrumentals. To me, only Phil seems to have the confidence to not overplay - to leave plenty of space in the music so it sounds so wonderful. God Bless you.
Kelly Bezz what I mean is...Phil is not liked by many people who call themselves a muscian, when in truth the man is a genius with more talent in his pinky than people who slate him
Kelly Bezz I do not believe in god....but thank you
Owen Ltd absolutely correct! Phil is immensely talented and so fun to watch! Thanks!
Owen Ltd I’m sad for you but you definitely have that right! Thanks for not being mean though! You are welcome. Take care.
I love this instrumental....
I discover in 1984......
Bravo, Phil Collins! Divine Song! You are an Absolute Artist! 👏🌷🎼🎶🎙️🕺💖✨
Ohh Yeeeeessss!
The Boss
The master !!!
A master.
The sax in this song is awesome
Man its amazing! Thanks to share that!
This song is already mythic.....
Imagine with this cams🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thankyou for being on You Tube!! and it's Awesome to hear your songs Live Sir,
I heard Phil C could play drums, guitar, piano, sing and take out the trash all at the same time?
his best drum solo with this great rock sound, so punchy for the snare drum, so modern for the bass drum sound :)
Phil's my drumming idol. I plan to get a Right-Hand version of his kit (exactly what his son Nic uses).
but, I have to admit, his drum solo from the "No Jacket Required" tour kills this drum solo by a longshot (I could not follow this tour's drum solo until the Stuermer's guitar came in).
EDIT: after listening to this "But Seriously" version solo for a bit, Phil seems to have gone for a blues feel (noted by the guitar solo). it's pretty good, but the "No Jacket Required" version solo is more enjoyable.
When "Phily" would sport long hair or, just as he did during the aforementioned "No Jacket Required" Tour, his famous mullet (which he had had sported approximately between 1985-1987), his drumming performances seemed to escalate into more emotionally orgasmic and even "sicker" performances than during other times.
Um dos melhores baterista do mundo !!!
The beginning of this is Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. The West Side doesnt begin until around 1:50.
Exactly! Cheers.
Unbelievable, at the final 10:52, is like "Watcher of the skies " from Genesis 1972.
la version live est magnifique un regal
Incredible 👌
Speechless
Great all Band ! the top of the top !!! Phill write again music don't leave us the emptiness that is coming .
But how microfone used ? Ev? mhhhh
He can even chew gum and play the drums!
I'm crazy in love with Phil!
Phil Collins magnífico um gênio da música adoroooo suas músicas
Very good
As a drummer what Chester is playing is crazy hard mentally. he must cut out at times? Love to see the cam on him for the entire song
Chester doesn't cut out. He went through the school of Zappa.
chris zenner Same here....I have tried the High hat and Snare shuffle....but trying to fit the boom boom boom, in on bass drum.....is not easy.....Phil and Chester are fantastic drummers. ...or Phil was until he can not play anymore due to hos bad back
The hard part for me is the open hi hat in the middle of the bass drum rhythm pattern.
He would do it so easily. You wouldn't even know he was trying. Absolute legend 🙌
brad coyl best friends of phil in this video just awesome in this view
Escuchar esto en vivo, MORTAL!
Potencia ^n!!
sincèrement le morceau le plus épique de phil et le groupe pour ma part.
He's playing on the wrong side of the kit!...Oh wait...Never mind...He's from England:) #LovePhil
It's actually because he's left handed, But that also works.
Rat Trap Just a little drummer humor on my part...That's why they generally don't give us mics:)
michael mattice Back when I was behind them I had to sing, But mainly cause I filled the part of Don Henley for a little tribute band. But yeah you don't see too many of us with mics. That's why I stuck with Lead guitar, Playing the part of David Gilmour, Much more fun.
michael mattice He's left handed. Very fitting, considering the Brits drive on the wrong side of the road!!!
Also without a foreskin on the bass drum. Is he Jewish?
Great music He’s such a talent and so of course is Chester 😀
Awesome Phil !!! Hay could not ask for an encore ??? Lol !!!
Great track and amazing playing.....the more esoteric side of Phil’s solo stuff I prefer
Incrível!!! Música boa não fica velha.
Phantastic
I'm dying to know where this footage came from. I used to watch the original concert on VHS back in the 90s, dreaming that I would be able to see all drum camera angles. Thank you for posting it!
+Kyle Shea This is from the DVD Live in Berlin, I've jused the multicam-source to show only the drumming. The audio has been remixed from the 5.1 surround mix where I have remixed all the seperate audio channels and converted it back to stereo. This amplified the drums, keyboards and backing vocals.
+Both Sides of Phil Collins That is awesome! Thank you for the time you spent and for sharing it!
+Both Sides of Phil Collins Some great bits stand out of Brad on keys.
Both Sides of Phil Collins you are gifted at what you do too! Thanks for your efforts and making this 11:08 of pure joy! I appreciate your time and work! Keep it up!
Kyle Shea there are 4 camera angles you can choose from on the dvd 📀 showing from different parts of the stage, on the song inside out is a good one to see Chester killing it.
I Love the parts of Saxophon
Phil no tendrías que morirte nunca
Simplemente el mejor!!!!
Totalmente de acuerdo contigo.
Imagine Phil doing a drum duet with John Bohnam!!
