    • @mortcola
      @mortcola Рік тому +8

      @@paulmccurdie6253 For what its worth, Peart counts Phil as the first or second most important influence on his playing; cites Phil's playing on Selling England by The Pound as "the enduring masterpiece of rock drumming", which "couldn't have been played better or differently"; hearing him on the tour for that album as his inspiration for becoming the best progressive drummer he could be; stated that he learned what he'd have to aim for as a drummer by hearing Phil's feel and capacity to get a sound, a tone, a touch, "Lyrical", "exciting", "dynamic" "always in service of the music", with "his refined technique", and that while Peart applied what he learned from Collins and a few others to his "fff approach" (musical term for very loud and hard hitting), he couldn't imagine reaching that degree of dynamic subtlety, the way Phil goes from delicate and swinging to making the drums "bark".
      Phil was a fanatical student of the drums - who developed his particular "technique" after drilling the rudiments, because he had a kind of dyslexia for music notation - but he stopped focusing on developing as a technical drummer, and shifted to playing tasty simple beats like the Motown and Basie-era drummers he loved. Peart went on and kept developing his unique and powerful control and creativity. Neil was a beast, who deserves his reputation, but he was modest about who he was and wasn't - he played mostly within a narrow, heavy dynamic range, and was specific about how he simply didn't have the capacity to develop the kind of touch needed to play jazz, even though he used some imitation big-band stuff in his solos, which were a lot of fun, using such a variety of triggers and sounds. Jazz drumming uses of lots of seasoning - shifting accents, grace notes, commentary and variation between limbs, as well as a certain way of laying out the punches (cymbal/bass drum accents), such as in big band music.
      Phil used actual big band swing approaches in Genesis, sometimes even mixing actual bebop and swing ride and snare patterns into the music (listen to Fountain of Salmacis, from Nursery Crime, his first album with Genesis in 1971) - NC is a serious piece of classic prog in which a 20 year old Phil, young and busy but tasteful, tosses everything he loved to do into the mix. That was just the beginning. And then there's Brand X, Unorthodox Behaviour being their first official album, which is a watershed album for complex, fun fusion - like Return To Forever mixed with Monty Python. Love Peart's playing (as you should)? Listen to Nuclear Burn, Running On Three, Malaga Virgin, ...and so to f...
      The Seconds Out version of Firth of FifthCinema Show (folks say that's Bruford.... but Bruford plays during the verses, and then switches to assorted percussion while Phil takes over the drum kit on the 7/8 instrumental section, with Bill coming in for double drums in the final third of the instrumental section). The studio version is a graceful 7/8 shuffle with jazz accents; the Seconds Out version is a burning, syncopated, symphonic-prog masterpiece). Then listen to Villa Strangiato or any of several Rush epics. You can hear how Peart synthesized several influences into his unique voice.
      but "better"... at this level, better doesn't apply. Each player is using his own voice to create what he hears. Phil did intricate things within the music which Peart simply never did, not that he couldn't, but Rush's music didn't need that particular approach, and Neil himself says it by emphasizing his own "fff" style. Collins' best stuff is much more intricate, more going on inside the music, than what Peart did with Rush; Peart was honest about what he did and didn't do. Neil composed and perfected awesome, powerful drum parts - never spontaneous, played with classical attention to detail and technical control; Phil created grooves which evolved and varied over the years, similarly to the way jazz musicians build upon standard songs, which develop organically and end up as new arrangements which become signature pieces which changed for each tour. Spontaneity with structure.
      Phil is divisive among people, but without getting too deep in the "greater than" thing, he is one of the chief inspirations for so many drummers of every style (except mainstream jazz, where he dabbled for a few years, using a tastefully old-fashioned swing approach devoid of fireworks. But the guy has helped define so much of pop history, and was the inspiration for so many artists of different genres, being the drummer of choice (and chief motivator, best friend.... Plant, Clapton, John Martin), that, taste aside, you can't question his significance or ability as a drummer during the twenty years or so in which he was on fire, and before hand and spine injuries. He was a unique voice on drums, and, doing things his own way, he had a remarkable degree of fluidity with all four limbs, extraordinary time and taste, and - this is a biggie - he made complicated time signatures sound like fun grooves. Turn it On Again has a pretty advanced turnaround, but sounds like its danceable in 4/4. Bonham taught Jason and used that song, plus lots of other Collins beats, considering them great tools for learning different sticking patterns as well as keeping a groove no matter what time signature it is.
      I'm thankful we have music and musicians like this.

      Often the rest of the band rely on the drummer to keep time. Ringo Starr was v good at keeping time for The Beatles. You often see the other band members turned to the drummer listening to him and watching him for timing.

    I had the privilege of seeing Phil Collins live a few years ago, and when Phil played
    the drums in "In the air tonight", it sent chills through me. I really thought the walls would collapse. When your hair vibrates and your eyes rattle, you know they are delivering everything they have. The best light and sound show I have ever seen, out of the many decades of music and events I attended, has to be Pink Floyd. When the space ship lands and Roger Waters appears is stunning. The best outdoor stadium show was Led Zeppelin. We are fortunate to live in a time of such musical greatness.
    Party on...

    • @honour123
      @honour123 4 роки тому

      Saw Floyd in it's many incarnations both pre and post Roger Waters. I was even at the infamous show in Montreal where he spit on a member of the audience. Big O ! I hate the shows that I saw there ... they either ended in riots ( Gun's and Roses) or the productions were so bad you could hardly see or hear anything (eg. Pink Floyd Animals and Echos) . I never learned my lesson with that Damm Olympic Stade but Montreal always got the best acts next to Toronto here in Canada back in the 70,80 and 90. Saw Genesis here in Ottawa for Abacab in 81ish.. Great show.. Zeppelin was Supposed to play Montreal for 80 In Though Out Door... but you know what happened before the tour :( Saw Plant with Stevie Ray Vaughn instead. That made up for it! Ahhh the concerts ......

    My dad loves phil collins and genesis. He also loves playing drums. He made me and my name is collin, and when i was young i was fascinated by the drums. Im now sitting here at 22 years old playing drums for a punk band. My belief is he named me after phil collins but he didnt expect i would be such a beast at the drums. Im glad im making my dad proud. Btw foxtrot is the best album

    I was born '93 and my dad had many recorded Genesis concerts on tapes. This duet had such an impact on me when I was a toddler and dad, working on construction sites, did a makeshift drum set from large plumbing pipes with hard plastic lids. I, course, made a lot of noises but still were able to keep a good rhythm for my young age, according to my parents.

    They took the two drummer thing to high levels of playing, drum sound, and tuning. The really cool thing was the two of them playing during the instrumental sections of the older Genesis songs. They didnt just wing it, and get loose and sloppy, like other guys who have tried it. They were so well rehearsed, and precise; and knew exactly what they were doing at any point in the song. Ultimate professionals.
