Yes, we trimmed down the section that goes between the doors to reduce the pressure on the door/screen. We used an electric knife to cut the foam - it was really easy.
Just thinking. The queen is 58” wide, same as the interior width, but you’re cutting off 2” practically. I’d probably just go with a full size at 52” and be done with it without all the cutting. Let it breathe a little. 🧐🤔. I like that quilt.
Please keep these great videos coming! My fiancé and I want a Hiker so badly but don’t have anywhere to store it during non-camping times. So, for now, we are living vicariously through Hiker UA-cam videos.
Hi Matt, just ordered my hiker mid range 5x8. As a middle aged woman I'm. Concerned about being able to turn my hiker around if I need to after its unhooked from jeep. Are they heavy?
How smelly was this mattress? I am just starting to explore the option of a Hiker Trailer, but right now I have a Subaru Outback. Looks like a cot size would work for me (with some cutting). I like the idea of 6 inches between me and the floor. Right now I have a Lucid mattress topper, which wasn't too bad smell wise, after about 3 months.
Hey Matt, did you have any problems with the Milliard mattress 'off gassing' after you bought it and if yes, how long for the smell to go away? I'm asking because we bought this exact mattress a couple months ago, opened it in a spare room for 6+ weeks before getting our camper 2 weeks ago and it has a bad chemical smell. We're just wondering if we need to get rid of it or just wait for the smell to dissipate. Thanks.
@@MWDAdventures thanks. We have other foam mattresses and have never expected a little bit of stink. I'm in NC so I'll put it on the deck for a couple days and see if that helps the process.
Love your videos, about to place our Hiker order this week. We want the option of turning our mattress into a couch - can you convert your tri fold into a couch, or you do you need a specific "couch convertible" mattress? There seems to be many more tri fold options for purchase
Ours can fold. We thought we would use it a lot in couch mode but found we only fold it to take it in and out of the trailer for cleaning or end of season. We never used couch mode. Sounds cool not practical.
Hey Matt. Do you think an outdoor polypropylene rug would work as a moisture barrier as long as we keep airflow going while we sleep? We really want to have the option to fold up the bed into a couch for the kids very often and dont feel like dealing with the hypervent. Let me know. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing the details of your mattress purchase Matt. Sounds like that Millard is an excellent choice. Thanks for the tips for trimming it down too.
Tammy Williams yes. I have been using it on and off in the winter. I put the trailer in storage and pulled the mattress putting it to use in the house. It’s very easy to move around.
Matt and Wendy since this video and a new Hiker with screen doors, did you just do a little trimming where the screen door frame is located?
Yes, we trimmed down the section that goes between the doors to reduce the pressure on the door/screen. We used an electric knife to cut the foam - it was really easy.

Maybe a “hot knife” like used for foam insulation? Not sure if it’d melt too much while cutting.
Did you trim all 3 sections?
No, we trimmed only the 1 section that is between the doors.
Hey Matt and Wendy, I need a pretty firm mattress, how would rate this as far as firmness? My back won't handle soft at all .
It is memory foam. It is on the firmer side. It is even firmer in cooler weather :-)
Do you have the deep galley? Looking at ordering a 5x9 soon.
We do. Check out the newest mid range xl review. 24 inch in my opinion is the only way to go.
@@MWDAdventures I definitely think that's the way we're leaning right now. Just trying to convince myself to pull the trigger!
Interesting
Thanks for the video, this was SUPER helpful! Our mattress is in the basement right now ready to cut... 5x9 Hiker pickup is Friday!
How exciting for you. Hope you make video. I get my hiker 5x8 this Sept. Cant wait !
if you were to do it over again, would you go with the tri-fold considering you do not use it as a couch?
Yes because folding it up makes it so easy to change sheets and or clean or pull the mattress out for storage.
@@MWDAdventures thanks! Love your videos. I hope to get a Hiker in the next year
How does the seams in the mattress feel? Do you notice them while laying down
We were worried about that too, but we don't even notice them.
@@MWDAdventures ok thanks
@@MWDAdventures do you know if hiker sells the ac prep fittings
@@Wrongwayadventures they are rv water dump fittings. You can get them on amazon.
@@MWDAdventures what about the inside vent items?

Does the mattress make you sweat? Does it stay cool in warm weather
I am a a warm body person and it doesn't make you sweat.

The smell was not too bad. We aired it out in our basement for a few days and haven't noticed anything since.

I noticed it for a couple of weeks maybe. We bought it and I slept on it in our house on and off for about 6 weeks. smell went away over time.

Will you be getting a breathable liner to go under the mattress?
bigjoemann yes we bought hypervent a product to keep things condensation free. Check out my review on it on my channel.
Have you known anyone to build a larger 6x10 Hiker like the Escapade trailer? I’d love to see that since I have 2 teenage kids who need a bunk.
Thanks for sharing the details of your mattress purchase Matt. Sounds like that Millard is an excellent choice. Thanks for the tips for trimming it down too.
Thought about using a Hit Wire Foam Cutter for the mattress?
not sure on what that is. I was following the lead from others that use the knife idea. thanks for watching.
I was wondering if you were still using the same Millard 6" tri-fold mattress that you showed?
Tammy Williams yes. I have been using it on and off in the winter. I put the trailer in storage and pulled the mattress putting it to use in the house. It’s very easy to move around.
Wow. That’s what I call camping!!! I would be more inclined to go camping if I had this. Great instructional video.
Are you able to fold it into a couch?
CDPA this model is a trifold. I have choose to not use it that way. To much work to make the bed each time. I leave it down.
