Franco, your drawing with the waterline is genius. It really helps to locate just exactly where you want your lure to sit. Love the “international sign” bobber. Nice. Regards, Cam from Ontario Canada eh.
I would like to see you take that same design and reposition the lead eye to the bottom of the lip, and shift the weight forward just a bit. I think the lip would engage more water for lift, and the pull from the bottom would have a tendency to enhance the lift from the tail. Just a thought. Another idea I have for a jumping lure is to use the minnow form and add "wings" to it where the gills would be, at a 45 degree angle with a low pull point. I suspect it might have a jump when jerked, and a topwater skittle/wobble when on steady retrieve. I think your stuff is great. This is my first video of yours. I subbed immediately. Great work and presentation.
I seen a bunch of Jdm lures. They got something very similar. They got a cool "bottom bouncer" lure that is just a weight metal "sub" looking jig. Works actually great. Lots of top water stuff we should have made here.
Franco....that design could be thrown into pods of bunker (Menhaden) when they are being harassed from under by stripers and bluefish in the north east salt......Excellent design!
That could represent mullet that love leaping out of the water. If you moved the tie on eye down, relative to the center line, would the force push downward more? So that the result is the lure shooting up out of the water at a more vertical angle.
Great build as always. As a saltwater lure builder, one of the hardest lure to get correct is a darter. Would love to see your ideas 💡and perspective on a version of the saltwater darter.
Hi Franco, I love fishing and have always wanted to make my own lures. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise with me. I have already shared your site with my son and grandson. God bless. Joe
Hi, Franco. I have to admit that I was skeptical about this design, but your water-level slo-mo footage of several retrieves instantly made me a believer. I agree with other commenters that you have NAILED the look of a fleeing baitfish with a predator close on its "heels." One question: Does the "indent" behind the head of this bait (the shape that put you on the edge of "propriety") play a specific role in the action of the lure? If you didn't see one in your testing, maybe it could be eliminated? Best, Chris
Paint will make the lure marketable but try some natural wood I think you'll be surprised. I've made some lures and taken em to the dock for tuning and detuning depending on what I wanted them to do. This was with just sealer, some actually did better before airbrushing. Old wooden lures did really well as the paint wore off so there might be something to that. Nothing beats catching fish on a lure you made.
Very nice and lots of interesting possibilities. For instance with a bit of weedless capability added, it would be fantastic skittering through lily pads.
Only about 5 minutes in and I have a question. Won't it benefit a little more from having the tie-on eye at the bottom of the 45 degree face which would cause a little more upward pull?
OK. I'm addicted to your channel after two videos! I have a question: I live in Thailand and my main sport fish is giant snakehead. They have lots of big teeth and a jaw like a vise. They shred many lures pretty quickly. Wood lures get lots of puncture holes through any finish a d the weed gets wet and rots. Ay ideas on how to treat wood to keep it from getting so many tooth punctures, or, conversely, stop the wood from wet rot?
Soaking the wood with very thin super glue (CA glue) before you paint, will harden the wood and seal it. Then, some extra clear coats at the end will help too. Have fun.
Thank you so much for responding so quickly Franco. I'm having a senior moment trying to understand this. Would you be willing to elaborate on the forces that cause this to happen? Don't mean to be the dunce in the room, but I can't see how a convex shaped back, or concave one for that matter, has any influence on the motion of the lure's head. Rather the area pushing water at the head seems to me the key to forcing the head up and out of the water, regardless of the backs configuration. What am I missing? Also, thanks so much for all you are willing to share. Yours is the absolute best site for lure design and construction by far than anything else I've seen. I really enjoy the scientific approach! Cheers!@@EngineeredAngler
Would love to see a frog popper in this style, then compare side by side with a standard popper shape! Also, curious about the tail shape, do you think if you used a vertical fin shape that the lure would leap straight forward more consistently? Like a little rudder at the end of the pop?
@@EngineeredAngler I totally understand why! I'm definitely going to try and make a couple. I don't have a lot of saltwater fishing experience, good to know the erratic action is pretty universally preferred!

Yes..it forces the head up when you pull.
