The director of the Lightyear movie is a Lego fan and mentioned to Adam Savage that he designed the ship specifically with a yellow canopy because he knew Lego would make a set out of it so there would be new Classic Space parts made.
The design of the ship is very fitting alongside the new galaxy explorer aswell. Especially when you recolor the XL-15 to the proper blue and grey body color scheme to complement the yellow canopy
I think it's a good thing that Lego's making GWPs much more desirable. If you're going to do a promo, do something cool that people actually want. They should really just start a "classic remakes" theme though, given how well received the Castle and Galaxy Explorer were.
100% agree. I'm pretty sure a Classic sets theme would be a HUGE hit for LEGO. Like just look at the community. Lots of UA-camrs talking about OG themes and how great they were, LEGO Ideas castles getting thousands of votes every month and the list goes on. I hope LEGO will do something like that in the future. Seriously, I've seen a lot of "Top X sets of 2022" videos and *all of them* had the galaxy explorer with only 1 exception.
I still wish that LEGO remade some classic themes and sold the sets individually, but I agree that Gifts with Purchase might as well be highly desirable.
I’ve been telling the folks at my local lego store that Lego needs to reintroduce their older original IPs, Pirates, Castle, Space, Rock Raider, etc because not only do the older collectors want them, but I can guarantee that younger collectors would want them too.
@@gadget19k76 I hate this trend that LEGO is on right now. It feels like they are saying "Ha! Look at this new GWP! Everyone likes it? Great! We won't make any new sets of the theme, because we can! Bwuhahhahaha!!!!44!!4!" Like, WHY? Why can't they make (for example) a second pirates theme? Why are they teasing us OG sets for like 3 years now?!
I really miss the 80s and 90s space sets. Nothing recently('00-present), in my opinion, came close to the feel. Also getting tired of Star Wars(how many years now?) I wish I knew about this ahead of time so as to save for. Awesome video as well.
I think the order you need to place for Canada is C$250 and that's just not going to happen this close to the Christmas holidays. Ah well, such is life. I didn't even know this theme existed so I am really interested in it. Thanks for the peek and review!
Completely agree, I wish Lego would re-introduce the whole Space line up. Each year or two, they re-vamp the City Police station, the Fire station and hospital... but never a revamp of the ones that have remained out of line up for decades.
Lego focuses on licensed sets I'm afraid, and when it comes to original lineups, they tend to prefer to invest in themes they can continue for many years, such as Ninjago. I'd personally love to see stuff like Exploriens or Aquazone back
@@reubenmitchell5269 true, i bought them all, took them apart, and rebuilt my own stuff with the bricks and figures. i didn't really like most of the original builds for the sets.

This would also give Lego a chance to extract greater revenue from each GWP kit that they produce.

Cool! I never played with these themes because I started much later but it is still cool to see how much Lego has changed. I just wish that they would improve the instructions design. The minimalistic design looks good on a few sets but it’s just too much for this. I hope that they make them cooler and more interesting. Also, bit unrelated but why is Lego releasing all of these sets for their 90th anniversary. I mean, it’s great, but if there is so much for 90 years then they must have something even better planned for the 100th anniversary. I can’t wait!
I should get mine in the mail tomorrow - happy that it is a GWP this early in the year where a lot of new sets have been released. Since i would buy a lot of the sets anyway it was easy enough to choose enough sets to get the GWP.
This Blacktron was one of my first LEGO and I still remember a lot of the build details (because it was one of the first.... so that's what I have to play with for a long while)..... I have to buy the Starry Night and a few misc sets to get it.... certainly annoying. But I am really happy I get to see it again (as well as the forestmen)

As someone who spends a lot of time designing mocs, I was able to qualify for this GWP by buying pick a brick. I'm happy I got the set, but I'm kinda afraid to open it now because of its value from being so limited.
This GWP pisses me off. It should be its own set. The only other set that I would be interested in is the Lion Knights' Castle and I don't want to drop $400 just to get a ~$50 freebie. I was waiting for a good opportunity (e.g., cash back, 2x VIP, etc.) to pick up the castle and it feels like LEGO is pressuring me to buy it now. I'm walking away from this one and throwing up two birds on the way out.
I didn't even know this set existed, I only found out from the Lego subreddit. I'm so sad now that I won't be able to get it, I feel the same way about the Lego Forest Hideout.
Fantastic review, really enjoyed the side by side comparisons. Even with modern building techniques/pieces the original surprisingly holds up better in structural integrity and playability. Canadian threshold for this in Canada is about $250 so easy pass.
I got it with my BMW M 1000 RR Technic set. I'm not much into the original Lego system these days, just Technic, so I don't know if I should leave it in the box to display it and sell it later, or just build it and display it. I am too young for the nostalgia factor of this set. Now if they ever have a reimaging of an Ice Planet set I'd be all for it. Maybe I'll hold onto this one until that happens and I can trade someone for it?
Totally agree with this weird GwP system. This iconic sets should be available as normal retail. Also, this stickers go to far. It is not fun at all to apply 1x1 tile sticker. Why the 4+ set has a lot cool prints, while 18+ are still with bunch of stickers. I like this set very mutch. My childhood started with the second gen of Black Trons, but still this one have an old space nostalgic vibe. And it looks awesome with Galaxy Explorer =)
I'm a few years older I guess. When Blacktron appeared I was already a few years into my Dark Ages. My only space sets back in the day were light grey and blue. As a result I have zero nostalgia for this set. And without that nostalgia there isn't much to go on. Well spoken about the GWP programme. Some of those sets appear at a time when I have nothing on my wish-list (that happens more and more these days) and the threshold for getting them has got a lot higher in the last two years or so.
I despise when they cram the manuals into the box like that. Like, atleast fold it perfectly in half if you need to do so, although preferably it should be flat. Also, from what I've heard about the black ingots, they're supposed to be some rare material that blacktron harvests, possibly to construct their ships with? Who knows. I just refer to them as "blacktronium ingots" 😂
I’m pretty sure there was a blacktron mini fig used as a motorcycle rider in a city set. I was many years too late to get blacktron however I do vaguely remember getting a black motorcycle with a blacktron figure.
With the hassle and needless purchase of sets just to get GWPs - the question becomes; Is it just worth it to buy in the secondary market, as cheap as possible ?
Im going to a Lego store this weekend and I hope they have them still. I love that they are bringing back some of the old themes. My dad gave me his old space set. its the 6971 Inter Galactic Command Base. It is by far my favorite set In my collection.
Thank you for showing the hidden lore with the sensor screen displays, that's a nice touch to the builds. I liked the old explorer faction (blue grey or blue white) being the counterpart to Blacktron better than Space Police, I like the Easter eggs reflecting that. I wonder why the designers changed how the modularity is done between the old and new Blacktron build, the new one doesn't make much sense to me; I liked how you can build modularity into the builds and they felt far more robust *and* Lego is still using those pieces, aren't they? GWP I don't like, perhaps they'll refine the design and re release the new Blacktron? For all the reasons the old one works better, that you showed, I'm surprised the new one didn't seem to have that level of attention or care investing in the design. Unfortunate.
Hi and thanks for your review and thoughts! In my opinion, this kind of GWPs together with Forest Hideout or Ray Castaway are part of big Lego marketing machine… The priority purpose of these sets is not to make a majority of community happy, but to make majority to wish something which is strictly limited and majority will not get it, but only relatively small group will do. But hype around is great and interest to the Lego remain on top. And this works perfectly, I got this set and I spent around 200 eur and I was lucky I got a discounted sets available which I was planning to buy. At the end there are unique sets available in form of GWPs during the year and it is still possible to get them to pay a premium price, which with delivery will be easily 70-80 eur. I personally like very much Harry Potter Monster book of Monsters which I consider as one of the best GWP ever
I got this set, and it looks really cool! I just learned it was a remake of the older one today lol. I don’t know if I should one it tho. Idk if the value will go up later on.
I get what you mean with regards to the old instructions. I build the technic space shuttle last weekend (I never had the set and I just bought the bricks on bricklink) and the instructions were horrible
I find myself agreeing with your opinions very often. Blacktron Cruiser is a cool set. If it was purchasable separately and I could get it from a normal retailer for ~25 EUR, I would definitely order it to give as a present for one of my children. As it is, I didn't have the budget to spend 190 EUR on LEGO sets in January.
Perhaps they should make a LEGO Retro theme. It would have sets that are revamped versions of sets from the past. they could be from any old theme. space, castle, western, pirates and so on.
It would be nice if LEGO would put the GWP sets on sale after the promotions have ended. I live in South Africa and I certainly can't afford to even spend the money on a set I don't want and then sell it to get the GWP
I was lucky to get it at the secondary market for a decent price and I thought it was worth to buy that way since the purchase limit was even higher in my country and I didn't find any sets I wanted. Buying it separately was just easier. I have not build it yet but I would prefer to get the old set instead but it's difficult to find and quite expensive. Haven't built this new set yet and probably won't build it in a long time.
Hey again, could you by chance do another one on the land rover defender? Sorry because there wasn't any speech in it only subtitles and i found it hard to read the while watching you build and show the features. It's ok if you can't because usually you do latest sets, but it would be great if you could do that because i am planning to get that
I don't think I'll redo the review about that, sorry. Here's the newest video about that set where I already talk about it - ua-cam.com/video/7abkUNlOXTQ/v-deo.html
It's neat that this exists, like the new Galaxy Explorer, but personally I wasn't a big fan of Blacktron and the early space models like the Explorer were already a thing of historical interest when I was really into Space - I'm sort of hoping they're going to move onto the next theme, mid-80s sets like the XT Starship, Twin Starfire, the "Futuron" subtheme... even Blacktron II (I much prefer that trans green aesthetic to the trans red of Blacktron I) and M-Tron.
Its really a nice set I was interested to get it but alas my thoughts were wrong I thought they were selling it like the galaxy explorer. I was interested to buy it but spending 250$ on lego to get it kinds cut my hope since there wasn’t too many sets that were appealing to me. So unfortunatly I had to forget to get that set guess I will stay with my original copy of the set.
I went to the store specifically to get the airbus h175, and had kind of forgotten that the promotion was even happening, so I ended up getting mine basically for free
I agree, I’m not a fan of the GWP system, especially when they have such a high price threshold. I had heard rumors of this GWP so held off making high dollar purchases. That and the new sets released on January 1st meant I easily hit this price threshold. Of course I had to spend a lot at one time and had to pay full retail prices for the sets, which I hardly ever do, because usually I wait for sales. It would be great if GWP items went up for sale 6 months or so later, but I think that would defeat the GWP idea because a lot of people would just wait. Maybe with these “general” GWP and not ones tied to a particular set, like the apartment set that was tied to the release of Eiffel Tower. Either way, glad both if us managed to get the set. 👍
absolutely wanted this set but waited to get it on bricklink for a rather reasonable price and succeeded now to hope i dont have to do that with the bionicle one they're doing soon :))))
thx for the video. i got the set as soon as they announced it, cause i had blacktron sets when i was kid. 190 bucks is a high proce to pay but at least, you get other bricks with it ;-) i hope the make more classic space sets, for me space police 2 was the greatest as a kid, if they would bring back the galatic meteor in the manor they did with the 1975´s spaceship, i would buy it with no doubt
glad Australia isn't the only place where lego is expensive from the lego store lol the ucs tumbler for example is 400aud on the lego store but I can find it for as low as 300aud in other stores
I don't like the insane asking price to get this set. There is simply not enough set to call it a good exchange. Added to that, I only have 1 or 2 blacktron figures myself, so in that perspective I missed out big time already. I was more into Pirate and Castle themes.
I spend €20 on bricklink to get the parts to build two. Of course, I already had a lot of the parts in my regular collection. The only things I am missing are the stickers and the minifig. But I already have about 50 of the old-school Blacktron figs. And the stickers... I can make myself.
How did we survive building LEGO in the past? LOL Great review and commentary/perspective...especially with regards to high threshold GWPs, thanks :) And you did get those sets for purple spacemen, right :)
You just made me feel better about not picking this one up. I think I will just rebuild the old one. I have those trans red pieces and all of the things. Those doors are not great
I feel the same way about the upcoming Bionicle GWP. It doesn’t exactly look amazing, and being a GWP means that despite being a huge fan I am not willing to spend so much for it.
wanted this set but didn't want to spend $190 on lego that I don't like nor need so I just went on ebay and bought it for $60. Felt kinda expense but at least I'm saving $130. pretty good overall but I wished they actually sold it instead of putting it in a gwp offer.
It's all part of the business strategy for LEGO, by making things artificially rare it increases the desirability of them. And they do this by having limited runs aka sets "retiring", and have rather large GWP prices to get things other than polybags.
I do agree with your point of Lego releasing the gwp's later to the regular fans as well, even though it may never happen 🤦🏻♂️...also on the other hand one must always pay close attention to lego Easter eggs, just saying!...😉😋
I have the original and now my 6 year old son plays with it. I was thinking of buying the new one (as it can be found online now). But I can see that the build quality isn’t as good as the old one. It seems to be a habit of Lego to use fancy new build techniques that just aren’t as strong as the older models
I like the set, except the stickers. I just don't like how stickers change the texture and color of the bricks. It'd be a classic if the parts were printed.
LEGO is second to none in marketing. Building on the fear of leaving out is an ugly strategy, but apparently it works. If we take another spin on this situation, giving a 30$ set free with 190$ of purchase means that the sets are at least 16% overpriced. Unpopular opinion: If we read the LEGO marketing correctly, they have children, who would not care about this set and there are AFOLs, who would. Yes, we are crying because of the price, but enough of us will still buy in to keep this GWP exclusive practice live. I am not seeing this changing anytime soon, so to match my expectations, I stick to Creator 3-in-1.
Cool set, Space Explorers is my favourite "Dead" Lego line, but for me the price is kinda big.(72 thousand Hungarian Forints) // Menő készlet, a Space Explorers a kedvenc "halott" Lego témám, de szerintem a 72 ezer forint kicsit sok egy vásárlásra, ezért lehet hogy ez kicsit drága. 12 minutes after video release btw
I have the old one, although it's like 15 years older than me, with some missing pieces and the newer one is not worth it for me solely because it's not a standalone set
You’ve apparently never been to space! Of course a hammer and a wrench! Couldn’t do without it!! Just kidding, love your videos! I’m not missing a single one! 😊👍
So I'm all with your criticism, every point you made is one bugging me. I try to never purchase via lego directly for the same reasons. But one thing I never heard at any review. Why is nobody mentioning that it's a relatively easy set to rebrick, especially because the windscreen was on Pic a brick last year so there is enough stock in bricklink. The only thing missing is the sticker sheet .
I did mention it with another set, it was the small 1989 Batmobile GWP that I built from Bricklink myself. This set very much relies on the stickers so I think that's not really a good option this time

Space Police 2 and Spyrius were my childhood.
Hi, well hopefully if my family falls through have two or three of these on Christmas. 😁
I live in South Africa and I certainly can't afford to even spend the money on a set I don't want and then sell it to get the GWP
one thing it strikes me is that blacktron logo is the same from the villains of Starcom cartoon and toy range of the same age...
beautiful sets; very good
representation and video
We definetly need space lego. Maybe Stellaris.
I've enjoyed all the GWP's but I wish they weren't so exclusive. I hate having to buy them marked up massively from Ebay ect.
Funny how the blacktron logo looks like a inverted Zelda Triforce! (One of the major elements in the Zelda videogame series)
yeah and both were released in 1987 (the first Zelda game), so who copied the logo from who ;).
@@RacingBrick alright thank you
Not sure I’ll make it to the store in time, but will probably pick one up later.
The difference between collecting and playing. member, when lego produced actual toys?
I have plans to go get these blacktron sets and other lego sets I like ect.
absolutely wanted this set but waited to get it on bricklink for a rather reasonable price and succeeded
now to hope i dont have to do that with the bionicle one they're doing soon :))))
What I don't understand: Why don't they just make these wings with red instead of black wing parts???
thx for the video. i got the set as soon as they announced it, cause i had blacktron sets when i was kid. 190 bucks is a high proce to pay but at least, you get other bricks with it ;-) i hope the make more classic space sets, for me space police 2 was the greatest as a kid, if they would bring back the galatic meteor in the manor they did with the 1975´s spaceship, i would buy it with no doubt
$310 in Australia
glad Australia isn't the only place where lego is expensive from the lego store lol the ucs tumbler for example is 400aud on the lego store but I can find it for as low as 300aud in other stores
I have the original old Blacktron Ship here.
It is a bit smaller and if i am honest, it look better.
Blacktron1987 sounds very Synthwave.
I don't like the insane asking price to get this set. There is simply not enough set to call it a good exchange.
Added to that, I only have 1 or 2 blacktron figures myself, so in that perspective I missed out big time already.
I was more into Pirate and Castle themes.
That price is disheartening, guess my galaxy explorer will be left alone
great video! nice!
In Australia you had to spend $310AUD to get the “Free” set
I was tempted, but spending 250 dollars to get it, is not an option in my book.
They could have made the split rear wings out of yellow, and that would have made the red really pop without breaking lore...
LOL
Great review and commentary/perspective...especially with regards to high threshold GWPs, thanks :)
And you did get those sets for purple spacemen, right :)
I wish they would make a then detected to just remakes of classic sets
It's all part of the business strategy for LEGO, by making things artificially rare it increases the desirability of them. And they do this by having limited runs aka sets "retiring", and have rather large GWP prices to get things other than polybags.
You are not a true AFoL without an old school space series mini fig with a broken helmet. +10pts if the head is stuck in the helmet.
Where did you get the red Ferrari on the self?
Bought it when it was still available, it's set 10248
I like the set, except the stickers. I just don't like how stickers change the texture and color of the bricks. It'd be a classic if the parts were printed.
They'll never attract the GWP buyers if they offer it later down the road. Maybe they should make it available to purchase with VIP points.
Cool set, Space Explorers is my favourite "Dead" Lego line, but for me the price is kinda big.(72 thousand Hungarian Forints)
//
Menő készlet, a Space Explorers a kedvenc "halott" Lego témám, de szerintem a 72 ezer forint kicsit sok egy vásárlásra, ezért lehet hogy ez kicsit drága.
What I don't get is the new clamp mechanism. Why not use the old one so you can even interchange the modules between new and old
So I'm all with your criticism, every point you made is one bugging me.
