This one held such a special place in my heart. When I was a kid I wanted it so bad that I asked my folks for it for Christmas. Alas, I never received from either Santa or my folks. Instead I got a really cheap made in China plastic airplane. I was so heart broken. Fast forward to now, I saw that Lego released this again though slightly more modern. My wife saw me tearing up cuz it meant so much that it felt like this was my Lego unicorn. Well today a package arrived unexpected. I asked my wife if she ordered something and she said "I don't think so." I opened the package and I was shocked to what I saw. There it was, my unicorn Lego infront of me. It immediately brought me back to when I was a kid again and I started tearing up. My wife and kids said "Surprise Dad!"
I never had the original, but I appreciate all the details like the sliding door and access between the cockpit and the back half. Already have it on pre-order and would love to get another to build the alternates.
This feel really nostalgic. I've got a colleague AFOL who's into this kind of stuff and he's building stuff like this and sharing in our local LUG. Getting the bricks for those seems expensive due to how old some of these are.
5:40 - those antenna pieces were a pain in the butt on original LEGO sets of the period, they used to always come off and need to be awkwardly replaced. Historical accuracy! 4:45 - the print on the computer plate on the left is a classic Space "computer" which were printed on slope pieces (in white or grey), so neat to see them on flat plates!
Such a great set. I didn't collect the original range, but my dad did, and has always kept them out on a shelf in his office - with me and my brother occasionally being able to play with them. The model makes me very nostalgic, but in an unintended way.
I pre-ordered 2 of these as soon as I heard of their release. Might have to buy a third now. Had this as a kid and must have rebuilt it a 100 times. Favorite set ever.
Interesting bit of information. When the original was released, it cost $32.99, which is about $130 today and had less than 400 pieces. So the new version is cheaper and has almost 4x the pieces. Definitely best value Lego has put out in years.
@@garyolsen6018 A 400 pieces non licence requiring Lego set nowadays would be around $40, not $130. So had Lego simply rereleased the original set, no way would it have been over $100, probably not even over $50.
@@JohnSmith-kf8mv Not sure why you are arguing with facts. Lego actually released the Galaxy Explore in 1979 for $32.99, which is $130 today. The new set is a great value and a great set. Also, another interesting bit of information, a used and complete original Galaxy Explorer is now worth $350.
The alternate models are my favorite reference to the original space sets! Those are delightful, I might rather build them than the main model. Plus the little ships will look good on my classic crater baseplates :)
Just finished my ship now, it was a truly fantastic experience! I owned the original 924 and 918 as a kid, the 918 is one of my all time favorite and I managed to get a complete set last year since mine is gone. The 924 was an impressive set, and the new one is amazing! Lots of cool details and complex design. Loved every second of the job, and look forward to build the alternative designs. Thank you so much Lego for this set, feeling like 12 years again!! 😍
If I remember correctly, the green lights at the back and red lights at the front are so that you know if you're gonna hit them or not. If you can see red lights, then they are coming towards you and you will probably both hit each other. If you can see green lights, then they are going away from you and you will NOT hit each other.
Thanks for the review. Our LEGO Classic Space childhood story is very similar, I joined the party a little too late for the earliest sets, but a friend of mine had either the 924 or 928 and my favorite was also the 6932 Stardefender. I agree that the 10497 is virtually flawless, I love the respectable nod to the original but with a considerate amount of new features and building techniques.
I inherited my cousin old Lego set from the late 80s, we pretty positive that we have the parts to build the original. It’s a gorgeous set. For me I came really into Lego with the Kings Castle 6080 set. Departed sometime in the mid 90s… only to pick it up again last 2 years… damn you lego
You have *outdone* yourself with this review my friend! I love the side-by-side comparisons. Sorry about your box, that sucks! I've never had that crushed pieces, ouch...
Thanks for this. I just pre-ordered mine. I got the 918 when I was a 9 year old boy and it is still built today. Missed out on the 925. Was either hat or the Technic Motorcycle an Sidecar back then. Thinking about pre-ordering a second one so I can make a fleet
I can remember getting this for Christmas as a kid waaaay back. I absolutely loved it, I had all the space series. The only thing I have left are the moon scape craters and landing pad boards. Prefer the original set to this one though.
Amazing set! Just finished building and could barely contain my excitement. Earler this year I've build Pirates of Barracuda Bay and thought that was an epic set, but although smaller this takes the cake! I've seen your video when you released it and knew that I had to buy one as soon as it was available. Next: The Castle ;-P Thank you for all your wonderful video's!
The original 1979 set was my first really BIG lego set, and I LOVED it. I'm not usually into nostalgia, but I might have to ask for this one for Christmas or something. Excellent review. Thanks.
I was obsesed with the space Lego 40 years ago. . . I made my first lego set only 2 weeks ago after four decades... I've ordered the new 10497 Galaxy Explorer...to collect for another few decades . .
I got back to Lego 2 years ago after loving them when I was a kid, great time to get back into collecting but the recent increase in prices will not help for sure. Cheers!
I can't wait! I have, yes still have, the ORIGINAL 1978 918 Space Transport. So I remember these well. I always wanted 924, but my Mum said it was to expensive, so getting 928 was way out of the question. Now 44 years later and an AFOL, I have the means to get this. Finally. And what a tribute it is. It will look great next to my original 918!
That was exactly my time. LL 918 and LL 924. i loved them so much. I hope to find them when I‘ll visit my mother’s house. But I fear she threw all away. 99€, wow. For me unaffordable. But for all who can spend money for the galaxy explorer. Enjoy it. I wish the old times would come again.
Excellent set, and detailed review. Did not expect this to be as big as it it, but looking might impressive. As for the canopy pieces. I'm pretty sure it's the same windscreen used in the Rogue One U Wing only here it's molded in transparent yellow. The only bittersweet thing for me anyway is how a set that costs significantly less than the upcoming Camaro Z28 still has a budget for as many printed tiles as it does while the latter still relies on mostly stickers. Other than that as the Castle is completely out of my budget this is a really nice alternative while still retaining that fun childhood feeling of nostalgia.
Lego, take my money! As a kid I only ever had the 918 because my pocket money did suffice for the larger sets, but as an adult I think I am going to buy multiple copies of this set to be able to display all three models permanently, together with my original 918.
I *really* got into Lego Space with Futuron too, though I did have a handful of smaller "Classic Space" sets. In fact, my very first "Legoland" (minifig-scale) Lego set was a tiny shuttle kit with a red classic space Lego figure. So I *almost* missed classic space - but not quite! I actually still have those original figures, though the sets they came with have long since disappeared into my background population of parts.
The 6932 was my best set ever! I lived in comunist Poland and we had special shops where you could but western goods with dolars, which were ilegal. I know, paranoya. My father sent me money from abroad for loosing my first tooth and I bought this set. I fell in love with lego ever since. Unfortunetly my house was robbed in thr 90's and so my set was gone. I promissed my self to buy it one day if I can find it in a box with no parts missing. So cool You like it too!
I like it. This is a very nice update to the old classic 928. I will need to get quite a few of these actually. Two for sure, but possibly three or four. After all there are some alternate builds to recreate. And I admittedly intend to have some nostalgic fun with this set.
Funny I found pieces of the original set under the stairs of the house my dad grew up in (decades ago), namely the printed pieces and the transparent window pieces.
I missed classic space by two decades. By the time I was old enough to want the original galaxy explorer it was already unobtainium. Definitely getting this set. Not only for the nostalgia but it’s a really cool ship in its own right with lots of little details.
What an incredible update to a classic vintage set. Really sorry about your damaged pieces. Hopefully you will be able to get replacements quickly enough

The Lightyear ship should have had a Cockpit/Canopy of this size, but Lego made a huge reduction as usual, so if I picked this up I'd use that big Yellow canopy for a proper size build. Even as a kid I hated those cheap helmets with no visors, made better in the 80 classic space lines.

This is one of the greatest sets LEGO has ever released. As you said, it's a great mix of old and new, with some really ingenious design elements.
So today must be the media release day for the 90 anniv sets…notifications going crazy.
How do you get these notifications?
Are talking via UA-cam or Lego direct?

this one's great and all but if Lego don't feel like reissuing any other great Space stuff then I hope the Chinamen behind Lepin get onto it someday

I just bought this fantastic set some weeks ago in an official LEGO Store, And I can tell you, this set is fantastic.
A proper spaceship! And the size looks great, but I need to make MORE ROOM for my toys.
7:54 Appreciate a rating of swhooshability. Essential for plane and spaceship figures.
only thing stopping me buying this is no wall mount bracket. This set should have one imo.
The windscreen first appeared in 2013 on the UCS X-Wing. It hasn't been used since 2016 so it's no surprise it's been given a new id.
Love it! It's inspired me to dig out the 928 set had I've since 1979, but which hasn't been assembled in 40 years. Hope I've not lost any bricks!!

What a fantastic set!! A little trip down memory lane!! Great video!!
Excellent set. I was dreaming of official remakes of classic space sets since ages.
Those windscreens were actually included in clear on the U wing set
What an incredible update to a classic vintage set. Really sorry about your damaged pieces. Hopefully you will be able to get replacements quickly enough
I'm hoping to be able to buy this set for my birthday in december! Its really sad to see that your box got damaged and even some parts got damaged... Hopefully this is an one-time occasion only...
The exact same windscreen piece was used in the previous LEGO Space inspired set, Benny's Spaceship
This is a really nice set
I wasn't sure if the landing gear would be retractable, as Lego generally considers those sets made for an older audiance are not made for playing.
I remember having to modify my millenium falcon legs to be retractable, and that was honestly kind of an oversight in my opinion. Really happy to see retractable gear here !
I really want that set but I’m saving up for a computer so I’ll just watch it for now, but seriously I love the look of it
4:59 those cockpit windscreens are from a Lego movie set #70816 Benny's spaceship
