+homemadevideos1794 I'd volunteer there a couple hours a day since I'm not that busy at the moment and I'm sure I would pick up a few tips and expand my knowledge a lot on hardware.
GlitchedGG We do, they aren't that nice. They use people on the dole who don't give a shit and some use day release prisoners or just released. Spent a day at one in London, never went back. Looking after the staff was never a priority (the bathroom was awful and shared with no lock) and the director was always using the money for "holidays" or "networking". The people in the warehouse also didn't give a shit so stuff being shipped to the 3rd world sometimes had bits missing.
Angus Glassford Don't let my comments stop you or anyone. Someone else could start one up but make it actually a nice place to work at. Just a shame the one I went to didn't.
its like geek heaven place. work there full time, well... probably not. but volunteering and also building these machines for poor kids, installing Ubuntu and teaching some class for programming - a way to go!! amazing stuff :D Its just crazy, most of these pcs and laptops are in perfectly good condition and can work for many years to come, and yet there are still people (especially children) that do not have any PC (phones not counted). just think of it. today you give that poor kid a pc, teach him some python and OS basic, and in future he will become developer and help push the limits of human thinking to the next level by developing software that helps the world to be a much better place.. way to go guys! and thanx Linus for this video, i really enjoyed that wayyyy more than another review of some grafix card or motherboard and frankly doesnt really differ from others :D
+Security First me too. Although I can easily afford new build I would like to experiment with some older parts but unfortunately in Poland older stuff is like 2 times more expensive then in USA
+Warren Maxwell Not really? They charge a massive profit on parts, which are not worth the price and (the one near me at least) doesn't have many components. I could find more online for better prices.
Warren Maxwell cex get parts as cheap as they can and sell for the most they can. we need places that can put out really cheap systems for people that cant afford the likes of pc world ect
Free Geek Vancouver is AWESOME! Whenever I've needed some forlorn vintage PC part or system these folks have had it and I've had no problem paying the price for it. Great people who will go our of their way to help you get what you need no matter now small or inane.
They are not deleted, I'm pretty sure they're on private. Idk who exactly are these ppl but I saw it happening for others before who got it back, I'm sure linus will figure it out.
Actually, you have to volunteer 24 hours to get a Ubuntu computer that isn't good enough to play any game and you cannot make any deals to get anything more or less. They also limit you to getting 1 computer a year.
It depends on what you need to do with your computer. If you "need" to play the latest games, you'll be disappointed. But if you need it to do stuff the average user needs it for, there's no problem. As seen in the video there are higher end computers available for low cost, just not "free." Plus maybe you'll learn something.
I think I just saw heaven and it was all in this vid. If only something like that existed within 100 miles near me. Best thing(s) I got from a thrift store: I once got a 1366×768, 1680×1050, 1280×1024, and 1600×900 monitor (separately but in that order) for ~$40 total, all still functional. One's in storage, the other's for a different computer, and the other two I'm using currently.
+Ganaram Inukshuk Monitors from these recycling shops are most awesome! I have a fancy IPS panel as my main monitor and 2 office grade monitors that are around 10 years old (1280x1024). Paid 30€ for those 2 monitors and they are great when it comes to viewing angles and colors still considering their age and price :D
This shop reminds me of a cool little project I was involved in a few years ago, working with a bunch of other volunteers to repair discarded PCs in order to donate them to poor kids and schools from remote villages. After the project got a bit of publicity there were literally dozens of broken down computers coming in every week from companies willing to help us and we even got a large pack of free XP Home licenses from the local Microsoft retailer. Fun times, I wish I still had time to do something like that again.
Its crazy how similar this place is set up to a university surplus store I used to work as a computer tech at. Hard drive wiping stations with DBAN, RAM testing, HUGE piles of laptops covering the walls waiting to be sorted through, the Monitor testing rack. All of this is so familiar.
Its funny that when you build your super computers with 4 titans, you are not wearing any anti-static gloves, but when you go to a tech shop full of old stuff that dont really have that big of a value you do. I have build all the computers without them, but while studying infotechnology, the professor made us pretty clear that handling almost ancient computer hardware in our school without anti-static gloves was unacceptable because of microscopic damage can be sent whilst now wearing them. Nice to see this channel has improved in a good way, usually when youtube channels grow the content starts to blur into the darkness, but not here! -Richard

I worked at a place like this once. They made their money selling refurbished PCs to the local schools and providing support for their infrastructure. Also had a small storefront for individuals and recycling what didn't work.
Oh wow, youtube reccomended this video to me again! I love this place! I volunteer there, well, not currently because of the pandemic but I used to work in dismantle, building and ram testing/drive wiping!
