Funny...the conversation with Gibbard fills right into this one lol....8:45 “I still wanna do the work, but I don’t like it. I don’t enjoy it.” yet a change of the approach, the need to write and finding the song allows him to continue and push through. Love all these interviews.
TY both for doing this - both of your music drastically affected my formative years - please do a tour together - before the world ends....we need ya'll more now that ever - no pressure ;)
Geniuses having one of the most interesting conversations I've ever heard. I love when musicians actually talk about music and guitarists talk about guitar. On some of these music podcasts and stuff i listen to they talk about everything but music. There's nothing wrong with that but this is what i love to see.
I think a prerequisite going forward will be wireless headphones. Mike's beard killed me the whole time. Great conversation and look into two great songwriters. Thanks for doing this Jim!
Whatever you do, keep doing these podcast conversations. Every one has served up a wealth of artistic encouragement and inspiration. I'm hugely grateful. Thank you!
2 of my all-time favorite musicians shooting the shit. This podcast is one of the positives that COVID-19 brought. Mike is always a great interview. He's so down to earth and just seems like he's genuinely cool with the people he's talking to.
At 00:45 you can hear Jim fight the urge to say the naughty "emo" word. Most of the greats of the genre (I'm referring specifically to the emo of the late 90s) avoid saying that word whenever they discuss it. Tom Mullins has a great podcast called Washed Up Emo where he talks with bands like American Football, Jimmy Eat World, Sunny Day..., No Knife, Braid, Cursive, TGUK etc...about those golden years and how "emo" became a dorty word in some circles.
Best takeaway from todays episode is Jim saying that the band is itching to play and are going to try to put together some sort of streaming event. YES!!!
Honestly? I’m so glad this interview happened because I thought for a while it was Never Meant. But it’s the perfect timing now that The Summers Ends and I can watch it while I Stay Home from work.
Jim, if you want to excercise that creative muscle and maybe scratch that itch to perform, you should try doing quick hour long writing sessions with your guests. I just watch a video of Mark Hoppus and a guy from linkin park do it, and they didn't come up with anything extraordinary but it was a cohesive piece of music. I really think this idea would also help people like myself who are looking for help with songwriting by watching this series by getting a direct look at the songwriting process. Just an idea. If you see this let me know what you think.
Please invite Fred Mascherino (former Taking Back Sunday). He got a channel too with good content like yours sir. I just feel like he's not getting enough attention and recognition. ☹️. You both are my heroes.
Can we get a Jimmy Eat World and American Football tour? Hell just a one off show. I'd fly almost anywhere for it...
That would be a dream
i'd fly almost anywhere to meet you there.. WHOA OH OH ohOHoooohhhh
Please let me dreams come true

Kinsella brothers are both so underrated as musicians and artists.
All 3 of them are really, Tim Kinsella is just as prolific as Mike!
Mike's the guest that I've been holding out for! Thanks Jim for a wonderful discussion!
Really fun dichotomy and convo between two pioneers of emo.
i could listen to mike just ramble about anything at all for the rest of my life and i would never need anything else
This series is so good, Jim. Thank you for making it happen 🙏
This series is so fucking valuable for working songwriters, Thank you so much, Jim. And awesome seeing Mike on here
Jim! I'm loving this podcast. It might be a stretch but it would be so awesome to have Hayley from Paramore on an epidsode!

This is the weirdest modelo commercial I’ve ever seen.
Watching 2 of my favorite songwriters just hang out was good for my spirits. Thanks, Jim!
Great conversation, as always. The part about the songwriting & layering of drums, bass, guitar and vocals was very insightful! 🤘👽
I love Mike encouraging Jim to release himself from his own limitations that perfection puts on him. RELEASE THE DEMOS, JIM!
It's cool knowing I'm a lot like Mike when it comes to the song writing process. Fan of both of your bands. So inspiring and influential.
You don’t write shit !!!!😂😂😂

Whatever you do, keep doing these podcast conversations. Every one has served up a wealth of artistic encouragement and inspiration. I'm hugely grateful. Thank you!
so refreshing and insprieing
I love hearing about my favorite musicians' thought processes on writing music. Even to someone who doesn't write music it is really inspiring.

This is great! Thank you for the very interesting conversation.
I loved this one the most. I've been waiting for this chat for the longest time, so thank you
As someone else already said here, a Jeremy Egnik interview would be so interesting!
Interesting chat!
Thanx a lot! 😊👍🏻
Mike called me a virgin on Twitter once and I blew up in all the AF groups I was in lmfao.
Tbf I overreacted but the outcome was hilarious
why did he call you a virgin lmfao
@@TweakCityGeekers it's obvious
The pyro and the horror movie background was hilarious. Great post production LMAO

Amazing talk, thank you guys
Owen is the best music to listen to on shrooms
Chase those demos!!!
You should chat with Mat Kerekes of the band citizen. He's been on the up and coming on his solo project and he's a very good musician overall.

Did Jim just edit in a flaming backdrop behind Mike while he was talking about it? Fucking great!
I'm sitting here like, "Hmm...Can I pull off a toothpick?"
Please invite Fred Mascherino (former Taking Back Sunday). He got a channel too with good content like yours sir. I just feel like he's not getting enough attention and recognition. ☹️. You both are my heroes.
However much I absolutely love these episodes, I just wish the guests would ask Jim a tonne of questions about his work and Jimmy songs.
Please get the Moose handler from the holy grail on. We're all thinking it!
Hell yes

Ben Bridwell, Doug Martsch, Walter Schreifels, Isaac Brook, Julien Baker. All or any would be great! :-) Even 5 minutes of J. Mascis ;-)
