A lot depends on where you are and what grass you have. I'm in North Texas and I have St Augustine grass. I mow twice a week to about 4-5" and I water twice per week ... always during the night, to preserve moisture for as long as possible. A 4" leaf canopy protects the roots from the daytime Texas heat and it sets up a nice moisture trap down at soil level to help with microbial activity/breakdown. I've never had a problem with fungus or thatch. Occasionally (depending on the weather) my lawns will sprout some mushrooms overnight, but these usually just indicate healthy soil. The more frequently you mow a lawn, the thicker and healthier it will become, providing you don't mow it too short. I keep my blades sharpened (every few mowings) and I only bag the clippings one out of every three mowings.
In Texas, it can sometimes reach 90 degrees by 10am during the height of summer. During that season, I start watering at 4:00 am to make sure the roots a good drink, and to avoid wasting water through evaporation. My results using this method have been fantastic!
Thank you, when you brought out the paper and markers I thought this might be hokey, but you explained well and now I could kick myself for watering in the evening. I will stop doing that.
I was told late afternoon (4-6pm) isn't as good as morning but is better than midday and night. Is there any truth to this? I am asking because I find it difficult to meet both my front and backyard's watering needs (especially with new grass) every day in the morning, so it would be easier to split up if it's a viable option.
growing up my mom always water during the day. our lawn always looked nice. and back then there were no watering systems people used a hose, and a sprinkler. also their were no weed killers, or fertilizers. all the neighbors did the same thing. the neighborhood looked fine. i also remember there were no weed trimmers, or riding mowers. i used a push rotary blade mower on my grandma,s lawn. we used hand held grass clippers. today's time is so much easier to take care of a lawn. which i am glad i don't miss pushing a non powered lawn mower. exercise was the benefit of it all. God Bless.P,S home Depot still sells push rotary lawn mowers, i had to laugh...
Texas in the summer. 0930 then again at 1630. Both times less than 10 minutes per zone. It is hot here. Water in the morning soaks in. The water in the after noon evaporates and keeps the grass from frying. There are different water times for each locality. But yeah, night and real late evening I avoid. I water alot less and only in the morning during the cool months
Does watering when the sun is high in the sky cause “burned” turf? That’s the word I’ve heard but sometimes is SO hot and dry I’ll water some areas just to cool the turf down a bit.
This is a real good theory. But it does rain at night sometimes. I would gather there is nothing wrong with watering at night once or twice a week when there is limited rain that week.
Yeah and a lot depends on climate of where you live. For instance if youre in a cold climate that rains all the time. Youve probably already got moss and mushrooms growing in your lawn already. So this is just a general guide for watering no matter where you are
WE ARE IN THE CAROLINAS(HOT) SO HOW LONG (DURATION TIME) SHOULD WE WATER FROM 6AM-10AM AND AROUND HOW MANY DAYS A WEEK SHOULD WE WATER? THANKS IN ADVANCE
Simple Answer: Grass drinks what it wants then if there is any water left over it should evaporate from the heat and sunlight. If you water at night then grass will drink water and any left over will sit in your soil and this can cause fungus s and other problems Simple!
Where I live, in the summer I can get temps of 110 and my lawn can see 14 hours of direct sun. I have been watering for 8min twice a day, 6:00am and 5:00pm. Do you recommend something different?
Yeah but unfortunately I have an irrigation system that needs major work and the only time I have to do it myself is late evening or even after dark. So far it hasn't caused issues although I'm aware of the possibility, crossing fingers.
Question. My lawn people told me to water in intervals. One at 8 pm and then again at 1. Is it better just to do it just once for a longer time in the morning?
This is a myth. Watering your lawn around 3:30pm or 4pm when it's really hot outside for five to eight minutes actually cools down the ground temperatures which is good for the lawn but it won't burn it. It's proven 👍
Paul and Ritchie's Adventures! How the hell it’s gonna burn? When the logic says opposite? Watering leads to grass burning? What do you water with? Gasoline?
With new sod, just make sure your grass never drys out. It might dry out during the peak heat of thr day, if that happens... put some water on it too to cool the ground temperature down 😁👍
@@WatchingGrassGrowOfficial hey thanks for the reply I was told it's not good to.water during the day not sure what to think of that but I guess you mean just slightly mist the grass if it drys out ?
Yeah thats right. The main thing is not to let NEW grass dry out. Water early mornings, but if you can see the grass is burning from the heat during the day, you need to cool it down, so if you sprinkle water on it, it will cool the grass helping it not die. But water longer in the mornings to encourage good root growth! Hope it helps :)
I also water around 7 pm; every other day; it seems to work for me. I assume that watering late evening would keep it hydrated all through the night and until the sun comes up the next day. In this unbearable Southeast heat which hasn't rained in almost 3 weeks; and temperatures have been 100 and over this past week, and with no rain in sight, I think is better to water in the late evening to let it recover and give it some much needed respite. I also water my plants at the same time I water the lawn, and are doing fine. The probability of a lawn getting any kind of fungus or disease is always there wether you you water in the morning or late evening. The weather here is just crazy; sometimes we get rain for a full week straight, which can also cause fungus and disease, and then we can go almost a month with no rainfall whatsoever. Is just a matter of preference. I prefer late evening. Its all about having that "Greenthumb" some people have it; and some people don't. Plants respond to certain people!
Hopefully you do not have any run off, I try to water for 10 minutes per, but every lawn is difference, is your ground soggy? Can you push a screwdriver 12' deep without too much effort.
i would have said 4 options there afternoon is also a good time its not night nor is it midday morning or afternoon cool yet warm enough the lawns get there drink but no access sits over night
Thank you for sharing, this is good information...I'm one of them night watering people, but I sure don't want my yard growing fungus-amungus. You have a cool accent Mr. Mowing. TY =)
I recently laid down a smatch 15 ft x 4 ft strip of sod. Before doing so... - Cleared the area of rocks and twigs - Put down 7 bags of top soil along - 1 bag of fertilizer. - 1/2 lb of Scotts turf builder. - Watered area I then laid down 2 sheets of sod (7ft x 4 ft/each). That was 4 days ago and since then I've watered each day at 7am then a lite watering again at 2pm (because of extreme heat 90+ degrees each day) Problem is, my sod has progressively gotten browner each day 😕. What can i do to salvage this grass?
There's a fair amount of shade. If i had to guess, I'd say that theres direct sun exposure from 11am - 3:30-4pm. Ive been using a 2.6 gallon watering jug at 6am then another around 2pm
aaah yes wasting water to keep you stupid lawn green because all your food comes form an industrial supermarket. What else would you use it for if not meaningless decoration? True modern domestication at its finest.

We have municipal rules. I usually just water Tuesday and Thursday at 3 AM for 10 minutes.
Ok I'll tell my teenage son to get up every morning at 6 and water the pasture that should keep him outa trouble hehe
It's 100 plus here in S. calif, us....right time is anytime, anything to cool the lawn down. 2 days ago it was 117 degrees.
Please don't think you are harming your grass by waiting to water when your turff begins to show signs of heat/drought stress.
Thank you, when you brought out the paper and markers I thought this might be hokey, but you explained well and now I could kick myself for watering in the evening. I will stop doing that.
Glad it helped!
Socal, st. Augustine. I water around noon grass is full sun and it just goes nuts growing strong and healthy

You didn't mention afternoon from 3-4pm (where 6pm is sunset). This is pretty good time when you lay new turf.
This is a real good theory. But it does rain at night sometimes. I would gather there is nothing wrong with watering at night once or twice a week when there is limited rain that week.

8 minutes do not mean anything! Must do at
Least 30 minutes/zone. 1 inch/week recommendation
I came here for 0:20 but I'm gonna watch it all because that was hilarious 🤣
Thank you for this video 👍now i have an idea what is the best time to water the lawn👍
How often do you water your grass? I live in LA.
No wonder I keep getting mushrooms and weeds.
This is a great video. If you are in Australia the climate is similar to California to the information is very useful. Thank you.

I’m sure as I walk the dog i see a few people water at night here in Southern suburbs of Melbourne ..every season except winter !
Another thing is that plants transport water from leaves to roods through the night to protect from low temperatures and hight moisture
Great informations! But we have to water the lawn every day in the morning?
unless u want ur lawn to die 💀
AM and not when it is windy.
thanks buddy.
how about around 4pm-6pm?
Seriously this was awesome
Geez,I've been watering my lawn at night for over 20yrs.Ive been known to be out there at midnight/1am doing it.
Awesome,
What should i do to water my grass its. Been cloudy for the whole week already and still is cloudy im not sure when to water the grass
Great information, my lawn was really green now it's looking brown at the roots...I was wondering about fungus.
maybe grubs..
Damn that pesky rain falling at anytime.
Exactly. I don't know why I didn't think of that. Rain does not go on a schedule. It just happens.
Thanks great job
That was moon you ppl dont see the difference u see it is more square 😂😍🤣😀 ty for effort and tip

I live in the UK where its cooler and have been watering my new lawn in the evening..... Is that not OK??
In cooler climates your lawn will just stay damp over night leaving possibilities for moss/mushrooms as the water sits for a long time
@@WatchingGrassGrowOfficial so rule applies to water in the morning evening when there is dew on it? 🤔
Thank you. I never knew why they recommended it in the morning. I assumed late evening would be better but thats clearly not the case.

I normally water 2 time a week 30

Just water at 7 Pm.

Not to sound weird, but I miss watering my yard.......apartment life sucks!

I’m in Texas how long each side
Thank you so much

Optimal YES - BUT Mother Nature has different plans when she rains at night.
Cheers Hayden 😉

great imformation
Yep The Most Common Mistake Made!
Amazing
So 6 am 10 am for how long 5 mins?
Depends on how humid/dry your climate is where you are. Where i am its really dry, so most water their lawns between 10 and 20 minutes 🙂
2:40
Btw, I'm live in Brooklyn, NY. (4 day Avg. Temperature of 93)
i keep telling people the best time is in the morning..... they continue to aurgue with me that evening is best😧
👌🏽
Best Time Of Day To Water Grass ?
I thought you should never water the lawn when the sun is on it, as the droplets act like mini magnifying glasses and can burn your grass
And who said the moon can't be yellow LOL
Or Jake the lc kid
this sucks cause I work in the morning
I was always told to water only in the am and especially NOT in midday because the sun would burn the grass.
Old wives' tale. Water when you have time. Water often.
Coulda been a 2 min videa
