My Great-Great Grandmother was onboard the Titanic. She booked in 3rd Class and booked so late she wasn’t even on the manifest. Her cabin was oddly shaped and she didn’t even feel the impact. When a steward knocked on her door, she didn’t even know how to put the lifevest on and took it with her to the lounge where she sat and sat and got the assistance of some man. She was one of the first to arrive and saw it quickly fill with others. Realising it was becoming serious, she went up the staircase and out onto the stern and climbed a ladder up to the boat deck, before being helped into Lifeboat 14 and watched in horror as men tried to board and were halted. After being lowered, she said nothing and could only be grateful she was in the lifeboat and was transferred to Lifeboat 10 before being saved. After the sinking, she returned to Europe and didn’t once blame those from the crew or the wealthy for the incident

Charles Joughin, the chief baker on the Titanic, spent two hours in the water until he got on Collapsible B. He drank large portions of brandy, acting like an anti-freezing, and kept his hair dry after the Titanic sank. This saved his life, despite his legs and feet getting swollen.

Most of the lifeboats didn't return to the scene of the sinking out of fear of being swamped by swimmers.
In hindsight, the saddest aspect of that is that those in the lifeboats actually didn't need to fear being swamped, because the effects of hypothermia meant most of those in the water became unable to move or even shout for help after fifteen minutes.

I just learned this recently: the reason there weren't enough lifeboats on the Titanic is because back in 1912 they were just little rowboats, they were meant to transport people from a sinking vessel onto a rescue ship, they're not meant to just hold a bunch of people and sit in the ocean. when the titanic hit the iceberg there was a ship that was only 12 miles away, the only reason it didn't show up was because it was so late that they had already turned off their wireless radio system for the night.

They didn't have enough lifeboats because they thought too many (enough for all passengers) made the ship look bad, like covered up the beauty and would 'worry the passengers'. Plus too many would 'ruin the ""fact"" that she was unsinkable'. Oh hindsight. :'(
They got in huge trouble for that decision but it mandated enough lifeboats on future ships the world over after the sinking. That deadly mistake and omission would never happen again.

After a lot of research I've done on the Titanic, I learned even if they had lifeboats for every passenger there wouldn't have been enough time to load everyone anyway. Also alot of the reason the life boats weren't at full capacity is due to people thinking the ship couldn't sink. Also, they were scared to be lowered into a lifeboat. As the titanic sank a group of men were trying to get a life boat loose from on the top of the captains quarters. When they lowered it the boat flipped upside down and at the same time the water reached the deck. Several men clung to the upside lifeboat and survived the sinking.

Exactly, I think the only thing that could have been don’t differently is that the boats could have gone back and loaded more people. But yeah there wasn’t enough time to load more people than they did. Also hindsight is a wonderful thing, being there in that moment you just try and save as many. No one could avoid the inevitable at that moment which was many we’re going to die. No matter what.

I went to the exhibit in Pigeon Forge, TN and the tour guide said that the lifeboats could have filed more people, but they were misusing the seats. The seats could have fit more people if they were sitting back to back, opposed to just a long line of people for each row. So they could have saved more lives possibly.

Considereing many launched not even close to capacity a lot more could have been saved. I suspect they each could have gone a couple hundred pounds beyound official capacity. This certainly would not have come close to saving all but a lot more could have lived.
The problem was all of the disorder from the officers and the fact that many just would not get in at first. As the nose began to go under it became more difficult to launch the boats and maintaining control became difficult. The captain cancelled the life boat drill scheduled for early that morning.

This is very cool information. But I try to imagine how it was in real time. Where nobody knew for sure what their gates would be.

if you look at the deck plans, it's very confusing to try to find your way up from lower in the ship.

I wonder how different the results would have been if they had started making makeshift rafts by dismantling the upper decks of the ship. An hour or two with atleast 200 people working together might have been able to produce some amazing results, especially under the pressure of death.

Yes they could have done it if each of them had taken oxy-acetylene cutting apparatus and a welding rig in their hand luggage. Easy.

I have a box of wood flooring in my basement, already cleanly dismantled. Exactly how do I build a raft out of it without nails in the middle of a life-or-death emergency? And don’t say rope. Let’s put on our thinking caps, kids.

It's disturbing to know that about 1,500 thousand people on board the Titanic couldn't jump into a lifeboat and suffered the most painful death we could imagine.

Hypothermia deaths are supposedly not that bad, almost like going to (eternal) sleep.

My 4x great uncle Charles John hurst was aboard the titanic but he died from literally being blown up by the boilers and long side on the boat with him was his 4 cousins who are distance relatives of mine I don’t know the name of 2 but the other 2 were called Charles Edward judd and Walter hurst and they survived as they stood on top of collapsible boat b, so they were pretty lucky I guess

Obviously not enough, but you should still fact-check before posting false info.

They had 7 lifeboats for the same reason they were speeding and ignoring telegrams, ignorance, status, and human error….causing so many to die

Hypothermia is a great way to go. You just slow down, drift off and thats it. the worst is getting into the first stage. After you hit the second its gets easier
