    Just have to stop and comment, I’ve been watching these since Year 1 and Chris is a really exceptional DM. This series could equally double as a “How to Run a Campaign Game” masterclass. Ive found It’s generally taken for granted all the nuance and emotional intelligence it takes to orchestrate group play. Chris does a great job of teaching while moving things forward while also having patience, while involving everyone in decisions, and more. He constantly keeps things narrative, helps manage expectations while being a good cheerleader, and great tone throughout. This is a cruel and brutal game and can generate a good deal of friction and frustration between players with the wrong attitude.
    Well done.

    This game is AMAZING! I've not been so engaged in a board game story for a long time.
    And the game mechanics are so satisfying, every action the player takes has it's consequences. It's not just mindless dice throwing, or taking repetitive similar actions.
    I cant wait to see what happens the next lantern year. Keep it up guys, you're the best!

    I was curious for an in-reality distance to that knockback. Turns out, that kick hits you hard enough to send you the full length of a city bus! That's terrifying

      This game is thoughtful about how it portrays the different types of movement and actions of its monsters. An online playthrough I watched had the players find out the hard way that the Screaming Antelope is a VERY different enemy than the White Lion by approaching it from behind and getting kicked.

    Unnecessary punishment... At 42:45 you activated the Wound reaction to your character's attack when that character did not wound. XD You guys are great. Always like your Kingdom Death videos. Especially since you often make it more punishing on accident by doing the above. :P Thanks for putting these out. And good luck in your future hunts!

      Also if they have a full raw hide armour set then they need to roll 1d10 and gain a survival back on a 6+ when spending survival.

      Some things do get missed some times. If I was playing solo and had a good 3 hours for the session, then these things will more than likely not happen. But under a time limit to get all the videos done, and me trying to not run the entire game, and let Warren and Justin actively learn the rules, it means mistakes will happen. I think trying to "gotcha!" us with the rules is sort of missing the point of the let's play.

    • @raphaelperry8159
      @raphaelperry8159 6 років тому +3

      Hey no biggy. I've made mistakes playing solo in the past myself. It's easily done. Don't worry. I'm not out to point out every single mistake but you guys did specifically call out in the previous years for us to add corrections in the comments section. I presumed such corrections would be for the sake of other players, not to try and make you guys look dumb or anything daft like that :).

    • @WoodMJoseph
      @WoodMJoseph 6 років тому +1

      Chris Handley wasn't trying to gotcha. Was mostly just a Segway to saying I enjoy your videos. The little mistakes happen. Guess I was just too awkward to just come out and say you guys run an entertaining let's play. Hope you keep playing and enjoying what you do!

    Just FYI on that dead antelope event, you can choose not to roll on the card and roll on the random hunt event table instead. As someone who has rolled and had to fight the level 2 lion and losing my entire party to it because we were not ready, I would recommend not rolling on that card unless you are already at a point where you are fighting high level lions.

    Im assuming its ok to use the cat eye circlet while out of line of sight? The character that used it was behind a rock most of the fight.

    May you please specify - what is this black object over the wooden table, where game board and all staff is placed? Feels quite suitable for placing all game components, including sheets.

  • @raphaelperry8159
    @raphaelperry8159 6 років тому +4

    Basically, for the Antelope, you need to either Herd it carefully from one survivor to another (since most of it's reactions involve running away from the attacker) or take lots of bows and spears to make it easier to reach the prey.

      Somewhere around the 34 minute mark did Justin's second hit get skipped and not resolved in an effort to move on to Warren's turn? I may have missed the reaction. If that disabled the second hit then it makes sense.

    BoW Fact: The designers of Kingdom Death have a version that is PETA-friendly, rather than hunting an antelope, the group can hunt a cantaloupe. Sadly the combat in that version is rather one-sided, with the survivors bringing back nutritious smoothies for their settlement...

    The SA's second turn when it chooses between ram and backkick. Neither attack says field of view so it should have really hit someone rather than graze, right? (ram sounds much more painful than backkick)

    • @ChrisHandley_dr_ether
      @ChrisHandley_dr_ether 6 років тому

      No we were using the rawhide headband to pick which of the AI cards goes on the top of the deck and which goes second. Then when it came to drawing backkick, no survivor was in range, so it did graze. Ram would though target the furthest survivor when drawn. But again when it came to our turn we did a rawhide head band to mess with it.

    • @evilporter
      @evilporter 6 років тому

      Thanks for the response - my question wasn't clear. Backkick doesn't talk about line of sight so could the SA have leaped onto the GSF (if monsters ignore terrain), done a 3 point turn and backkicked one of the survivors? It has a move of 6 so 2 survivors would have been in range. or does it need to run around terrain? I might have needlessly been TPK'd by WL cos i assumed he could just hop onto the GSF.

    • @ChrisHandley_dr_ether
      @ChrisHandley_dr_ether 6 років тому

      Ah yes. Looking back at the video it would have been in range to attack by going onto the giant stone face.

    I can't get enough of this series, and I've been binge watching the episodes.
    Also I finally decided to buy the game and play it with friends, its too awesome to leave it behind!
    the price is hefty but I like to think like this
    200$ for Kingom Death = 1000 hours+ of entertainment
    films 8$ for every 2hours of entertainment = with 500 films you'll have 1000hours of entertainment for a total of 4000$
    ok lets say that kingdom death is 500 hours of enterainment.
    then its
    250 films (2h each) for a total of = 250 * 8$ = 2000$
    and a remainder that films do not leave you with models, cards and they are not interactive.
    so yeah, in my opinion this seems like not that much for the amount you get

    12:27 back kick - this should actually target someone, right? because it says "closest threat, in range", so it should target survivor, as they were in range, just because they are not seen doesnt mean they or not threat, right? To ignore this, it would have to say "closest threat, in field of view". Or am i wrong? i dont have rulebook on me now

    I think you also forgot about Buck at the end. When it was in the Destroyed Hoof, falls down cycle, you kept forgetting to do Buck first, the draw AI and fall down. (or did I miss you getting rid of it? Nevermind, it was removed by the harp, thanks NYCFen)

      Blame Warren for not noticing (I am trying to micro manage the game less and less).

    • @ruindavidson901
      @ruindavidson901 6 років тому

      Chris, that may sound weird and there is no intention to provoke you, but do you mean that you wish Warren and Justin actually not rely too much on you as a potential game master and pay more attention to the details? (I know that GM is not in this game, but who owns the rulebook usually explains entire game so w.e). ? Well it's fair enough, if that's the case. However it's also true that they are not on the same level with you as I suppose that they haven't read entire rulebook (at least Warren, it seems :D) - please bear with them :) Who else if not you will lead them into the darkness to survive another dawn?

    • @ChrisHandley_dr_ether
      @ChrisHandley_dr_ether 6 років тому +2

      Well my point is this. I do try and keep my eye out for significant rules issues and things that act against us, but if a player forgets to roll to recover survival and the other players don't spot it... tough. There is only so much I can do in the game while also trying to present the rules clearly (especially when new things turn up that haven't been on camera before).
      The other thing is, I don't want to feel as if I am also directing Warren and Justin in what they want to do as players. It is a cooperative game and for me, it feels very easy to just say "Do this, roll that, roll this, move there". I want as much of a "natural" gaming experience on video as you can get. The play through is already rather optimal with my presence.

    • @ruindavidson901
      @ruindavidson901 6 років тому

      And you know what Chris? That's great :) Each of you is unique and interactive person. And I totally understand that it's not as fresh experience for you as for Warren or Justin as they are so excited sometimes, that forget something quite important. However when you all share this joy and it's not, u know, "fake camera smiling" and stuff like that - it's just great - it's the pearl of this playthrough. Probably, it's weird but I often see that you are quite sad when they interrupt you, while you never try to interrupt them intentionally. Thus said, they would probably not make that far without you and your directions definitely played a good role even if you don't like "directing" and prefer coop over it, it's totally fine. It's a purpose of the game. All decisions of you guys feel personal, but you give them some light in this dark place of unknown so they won't struggle as much as you did in solo playthrough and probably it's the great aspect of you as a player and a person. I hope that you will end this campaign in the glorious manner and that we won't see this series end soon :)

    • @ghostkill221
      @ghostkill221 6 років тому

      As someone who performs pretty much the same role as chris for my group, I don't mind being the "rulebook/gamemaster" but I feel like if my players start to understand the ins and outs and micro their own characters, they always end up getting way more into the game, which is usually the best outcome. I've ended up having my players each be responsible for handling a few different meta things (one does tokens, one does resource dealing, etc) and I've notice that it's really made it easier for everyone to get a better track on whats going on. Also, the less I micro, the less I'm going to be blamed when everyone starts dying.

      Nope. Only at the start of the Monster turn. Edit: Nope my misreading. As the rules state a monster stands when an AI card is drawn. Which is normally at that start of it's turn. But also it does stand at the start of survivors turn.

  • @ruindavidson901

    Also I've noticed that you've used Surge on 23:49 to land another attack, however in Rules it's stated that attacking survivors cannot use survival (Surge is survival) and attack was made previously (which failed, but nevertheless):
    1. Survivors can use each survival action only once per round.
    2. Attacking survivors cannot use survival => which is the case.
    You can spend survival when:
    1. Before or after any completed survivor movement or activation => it's quite similar to the situation, but you need to keep in mind that attack won't allow you to use it offensively except the below conditions:
    2. During monster flows. (Monster flows are only on AI cards. They happen after the Pick Target but before the Move and Attack, some AI cards have more than one flow and some have none).
    3. When a monster is knocked down on its turn.
    During a survivor attack there are two opportunities:
    A. After the attacker rolls to wound but before any reactions are resolved. If a hit location has no reaction there is no opportunity to spend survival.
    B. When the attacker causes a critical wound, after any critical wound effects are applied, but before the Hit Location card is discarded.
    p/s No "gotcha" etc. - it's not a simple rule, but you need to keep that in mind. Warren, Chris and Justin are great :) Chris feels a bit upset, but I may be wrong. Thank you for your amazing videos, guys! Best wishes from Ukraine.

    • @ChrisHandley_dr_ether
      @ChrisHandley_dr_ether 6 років тому

      Ruin Davidson so thw case here is Justin activated his survivor, moved and attacked (failed) and then between survivor activations surged (as Justin had completed the activation).

    • @ChrisHandley_dr_ether
      @ChrisHandley_dr_ether 6 років тому

      This is exactly akin to the example in the rule book where the survivor activates, moves, attacks and then dashes.

    • @ChrisHandley_dr_ether
      @ChrisHandley_dr_ether 6 років тому

      So what you are confusing is an active survivor spending survival during a combat action, and what Justin was doing, spending the survival between survivor activations.

    • @ruindavidson901
      @ruindavidson901 6 років тому

      Sorry Chris if I'm causing a misunderstanding, but you've mentioned that he used survival between survivor activations. I've rechecked the rules and the scene, however I haven't found a on-screen situation when he used Surge during a flow on the AI card, which happened during some other survivor's turn (in other words he can "intrude" and perform attack before monster applies it's reflex/wound/failure to other survivor). What I've noticed is that Justin starts his turn (goes to the rear), then throw two dices - both attacks have missed, then he applies Surge with the same character, manages to hit twice and both hits applied afterwards. That was my main concern, because he can use it only if there is flow on the AI card (not during his turn as attacking survivors can not use survival - only during other survivor's turn), monster knockdown or before anyone completed movement/activation - he actually moved and attacked. So if he has used Surge during other survivor's turn - it's totally OK, but I thought that it was actually his turn :)

    • @ChrisHandley_dr_ether
      @ChrisHandley_dr_ether 6 років тому +1

      So as per the rules page 76;
      Survival actions can be used;
      Between Survivor actions,
      During Flows on AI cards
      Specified points in survivor attacks
      When a Monster is Knocked Down.
      So in the case you have pointed to, Justin a) activates, uses the movement action, then the attack action, ends his activation, surges, new survivor action.
      Justin thus moved to the rear, attacked (missed with both), ended the action, surged and attacked again.
      This is exactly like the example on page 76 where a survivor is activated, moved, attacks, then uses survival to dash AFTER THE END OF THE ACTIVATION.

    I'm loving this series, but I have one complaint: you guys treat John like shit. Despite him being with you since almost the beginning and making at least a couple of clutch plays, you guys keep treating him like a bench player, or an afterthought. That's fucked up. You should hook John up with some of the gear you spent 30 minutes crafting during this latest episode. I believe that doing so will result in your luck turning; your rolls have been for shit so far.

    From what I've seen this is a game id really like to play and get into. But I can't justify spending £903 for the main game and all the expansion. Even the base game is £309 that's a lot of money for something that would only ever get played twice at most. Which is the main turn off for me.

Really impatient in a game that requires precise strategy or you get punished. She died because of positioning. You didn't ever activate the perfect strikes on daggers, you should have gotten to roll for getting survival back when either of the characters with full armor sets used survival.
    If it was a home game I get it, but this is a lets play, usually used to educate people on the game, and you've repeated errors from previous episodes.

      While I do agree with you, and this will probably spread some incorrect rules around, I also think this is a game where it’s important to keep things moving and not constantly going back to the book or holding things up with perfect moves. I think they were demonstrative of the right kind of “this is a game, let’s keep moving” mindset for beginners to ultimately heed to, just make notes of what you were unsure of to look up afterward and correct going forward. Have seen people give up on this game when it becomes too pedantic. Play when you play, reflect and polish the rules in between. Within reason obviously.

    I love these videos, but these new videos seem like they dislike each other or something. Relax! It is a game. Everyone is excited by the narrative.... if a hand hangs out too long, it is okay!! No need to chop it off.
