as an intermediate painter, I took special notice of the following: the medium that was used in the flesh-tones to slow the drying for wet-blending transitions, how the bases were handled (these are very detailed bases and it is good to see such a no-nonsense approach), how the eyes were handled. ... think I will get out my KDM figures right now!
@@Sorastro on the same note, I often found my paints to dry out before smoothly applying the paint to the skin. I'm struggling with making the skin smooth (possibly because of the Reaper HD paint. Known to dry out quick and goes chalky). Do you think the glazing medium would help reduce the drying time?
@@zano_korellio Hi Zano! Yes - Vallejo's glaze medium has some retarder in so it does nicely slow the drying time. (Or you could just try adding some pure retarder..) :)
@@Sorastro Okay! That might be a good one to buy next time I passed Hobby Lobby or something. 40% is no joke awesome. The medium might help the paint to stop drying too soon on the brush, leaving some chalky texture on my minis (I noticed this particularly using MSP HD "stark naked" skin color)
What a wonderfully edited tutorial. The music and paint scheme gave off a unified mood that matched the miniature game system. Thanks for posting this! I'll be using this tutorial on mini soon!
this is jawdropping, watched it a second time now. I love everything in this video, both production and the actual minis. Makes me think of VaatiVidya.
Clicked on your channel to show my brother some great painting tips and found this. We started freaking out as yesterday we opened KDM core box. Thank you so much. :D
No, thank you, man. I can't even express how many doors your tutorials opened up in my head, taught me how to consciously use color, try different things. Seriously, these are ones of the best painting videos out there and this particular one is a special gem amongst those :) Great work.
Thank you! I've been wanting to paint them for ages myself, but only just feel that I personally have the skill and confidence to do them justice (in my eyes) :)
Sorastro's Painting I am holding off on painting mine for the same reason. Newbie to painting but got the game months ago to play with friends. I want to paint them so badly but have specific things I want to do I am not quite up to yet.
All I can say is; wow! The lighting effect really came out nicely on those miniatures and it gives them a very isolated, vulnerable feeling to them. It took me a second or two to realize the "groundwork" on the bases was actually individual faces, which is a nice, creepy touch.
Those are some striking minis. Simple yet powerful in pose and presentation. You beautifully captured their "softness" with your perfect rendition of light and darkness. Thank you for breaking up those steps for us "mere mortals" :)
Bloody hell. This has got to be some of the most impressive OSL work I've ever seen, and certainly the best I've ever seen done as a process video. Hats all the way off mate.
Wow...very nice and informative guide. I paint now for more then 10 years miniatures and this is one of the best osl guides I saw in a while. I cant believe that someone gives a thumb down.
The directional spray technique worked very well. It created patches of light in areas that might not otherwise have got it. like the patch on her back foot. Very nice effect
Thanks John! Yes.. although it's possible to work out logically where the light would hit, the directional spray just spells it out nice and quick, and it does sometimes show areas that would otherwise be easy to miss - like that back foot :)
I've read and read tutorials on OSL, but this is hands done the best guide I've seen thus far!! Actually watching the process is leaps and bounds ahead of what I've read. I was already in love with your Zombicide (both versions) & IA videos, but I became a Patreon when I heard you had KDM on your plate for us. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
As a mini painter beginner (painting blood bowl players), i'm really impressed by what you've done, with skin tone and light. Congratulations, i hope i'll be able to paint my teams like that one day.
I've been putting bits up on facebook and generally pleased with the feedback, but then everyonce in a while someone posts some stella work with crazy skin tones i cannot wrap my head around, this is a great tutorial that I think will start me on a path to understanding what can be done with skin tone techniques.
one of the best parts of my day is painting and listening along. though I don't paint these minis, I watch for the basic lessons in painting, which help me in my own projects. it's fun to paint alongside you!
Glorious work as always, Sorastro. Many, including myself, have been waiting for a solid Kingdom Death painting tutorial. I really hope to see more, have a great new year.
The work you’ve done here is prob the best Ive ever seen you do. Between the minis, the effects, and even the background music, it all comes together magically. Im sitting here with my jaw open, absolutely stunned at how they look. I wish I had one tenth of your talent, I would certainly try to do all my minis and get into the hobby....but for now, I’ll just admire from afar. Hope you have a great 2018 and continue to *wow* us with your work...god bless :)
Thank you! That was a level up! I had always problem with the lightning sources, but now, I think I am on the best way, because of your amazing tutorial! Thank you very much!
It' is amazing how do you keep improving the quality of your tutorials, I've loved the OSL and how you have kept on the colour of the skin of the shadowed areas the sense of living skin and deepness despite the dark colours. These beautiful sculpture jobs deserve a very good painting, and IMHO you have done them justice. And, as usual, a great(and a little unsettling) music. I'm wishing to see your next tutorial. BTW I wish you the best for you and yours the next year. :)
Thank you so much Mikel! I did slave quite hard on trying out various colours and ideas in preparation for this video so I'm glad you like the finished result. Happy New Year to you too! :)
Been following your work ever since your Black Plague Series. Nice to see you still around. Fantastic looking paint job. I have been debating whether to paint mine or not. There really wasn't any good tutorials on YT to achieve the quality I wanted. There is now finally! Wonderful series, cant wait for more - subscribed!!
Every game publisher that uses minis in their games should send u a thank you note every day..lol.Your channel has probably increased the sales of those games considerably. The "Sorastro effect". Awesome as always. Cheers.
This is absolutely the best intro for OSL that I’ve seen. Outstanding job! I’ve dabbled with OSL but your breakdown is the first I’ve seen where it actually got through my thick head. Not afraid to give it shot more on my models now.
Wonderful work! Well done! Your videos have teached me amazing techniques and I'm just a board game fan with no experience in painting. Thank you for sharing. Counting days for episode 2!
Wow, that was very therapeutic to watch. I love your music too. Very atmospheric. Liked you on Spotify. Thanks for this. I've saved it to my painting bookmarks for future reference.
Sorastro's Painting this inspired me to try blending skintones on my blight kings with the aid of the zenithal highlights 😊 the tinted skintones were especially interesting 😊
Amazing as ever - I cant believe it's 3 years today since your Storm trooper video went up (which I found pretty quickly as I got Imperial Assault that Xmas ...
I'll also add - you have so much more patience than me - everytime I even think about film a paint I just have a panic attack - plus your work is amazing. Thanks for a couple of years excellent guidance on several projects. Now about to embark on Massive Darkness Lightbringer and three onslaughts of Cthulhu Wars. Will be using many of your techniques for MD from the Zombieside painting
That was amazing. I love how you really clearly show each step and how thin the paints are and exactly how you do all the techniques. Best painting videos I have found so far, subbing and going to work my way through all your videos. Amazing!
Excellent guide, and very relevant and topical. Thanks very much Sorastro. I've almost finished my survivors and now wish I'd waited by one month so I could've seen your video ha
I must admit i was waiting for your white lion for inspiration, i've assembled mine recently, thinking of making some lanterns in greenstuff to lay around the base for various sources of illumination akin to what you did with the survivors, as I really like it. Very curious on your take of it!
Wonderful work as always. Coming from a true newb who has yet to really start painting (but has watched a ton of your videos and just got his rosemary brushes) this one feels like a real step up in difficulty with the light source involved. Black Plague, Decent and Imp Assault all felt like tutorials for beginners, where this feels more for the intermediate. Being a huge KDM fan I think ill paint all my imp assault and decent stuff first to gain the confidence to attempt this look. Keep em coming, I can't wait to see the White Lion and Antelope interpretations.
Thank you Daniel! You're not wrong about my approaching this less with beginners in mind. I also waited for a long time before I myself felt that I had the skill and confidence to do the minis justice (to my eyes anyway). :)
Wow just wow. You are an artist this lloks so incredible. I also wanted to thank you for tehse videos. Your old Zombicide video has helped me to build up enough courage to get into painting minis myself (started this September) Since the results were surprisingly much betten than expected it gave me the boost to try out how my beginner paiting skills faired on teh Shadow of Brimstone minis... Which resulted in em playing my first SOB game ever on a board with fully paimted minis.... And paintiing is so relaxing as well.
Thanks so much! I'm happy to hear you've enjoyed getting into this wonderful hobby. That's awesome that you painted your SoB minis up! There's nothing like playing a game like that with everything painted :)
Great stuff! One can definitely look back and see how you've improved immensely and it's great to see someone experiment with different techniques. Please keep up the good work!
Seriously fantastic tutorial. Thanks so much for making this. Lookig forward to trying this out. Hope you will be doing more KD:M in the future. Thx again
Best object lighting effects I've ever seen. Yes, its exaggerated but it creates an extremely striking aesthetic that perfectly fits the tone of the game. If I had a 10th of the skill and all the time in the world I'd do the same for every plasma gun on my 40k army.
Excellent, thank you. please do the white lion next and keep going with the kdm stuff, youre the only person ive found doing kdm who is both a good painter and a good producer of tutorial videos.
This was one of my favourite board game videos. I don't even owb a copy of KDM and i was fully captivated. I love how you didn't just paint them, but found this unique, almost classical gothic art style, and added the persepctive of light which made them so dynamic. Could you do some other paint styles? I would love to see Scythe figures done, in the same almost water color style. I would also love if you could do Inis in the same style as the art on the cards. I know the minis are not the best but still i would be very greatful. Anyway keep up the good work i can't wait to see the rest.
Thanks a lot Patrick! I did look at quite a lot of Renaissance paintings in preparing for this video :) It's unlikely I'll get to painting Scythe or Inis I'm afraid as I have so much on my plate already (including lots more KDM!) :)
So how much did the little LEDs cost to put inside the figures, because I don't believe the work you've done. :) It's unreal. Seriously, absolutely unreal. Thank you again for all this, really helped me kick off my own hobby and learn.
Lol - thanks a lot Jordan! The OSL isn't technically hard to achieve really, it's just about balancing the contrast. Notice how dark I kept the rest of the non-lit portions of the figures? :)
I did notice! Something I have been trying to replicate currently with the Black Plague and Imperial Assault series. Waiting on new brushes now, as the ones I had been using weren't the best quality. Can't wait to see whats next!
Lol - thank you Damon! Painting things like the pupils comes with a little practice, and keeping those wrists (and arms) resting calmly on the table.. :)
Sorastro's Painting thank you for replying! I’m looking at getting a spray gun with compressor on alixpress.com for around 40 bucks so I can try it out (firstly on some cheaper models). What size nozzle did you use?
And i thought i was reasonable good on my painting channel.. man i wouldn't believed you that these were painted if you didn't post this tutorial. Subbed
these miniatures deserve a good paintjob. They look stunning even without the coats. Never played the game nor do i think i ever will, but looking forward to more from this series..
The lantern light effects really came out nicely.
+John-Paul Laflamme Thank you sir! I'm very glad you like it :)
Lovely tutorial, got me to pick a paintbrush up for the first time in 10+ years. Can't recomend higher than that!
Thanks a lot Kurgol! I really appreciate that :)
Holly S**t...
You can be really proud of your work !
The OSL effect is simply perfect, i will run to my house and take my brush to practice that. :)

This video is perfection. The painting, the explanation, the music. Subscribed
Thank you so much sir! I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂
omg this music...very eerie .....i felt for the minis desperation .....awesome painting as always
Thanks Thanasis! I'm glad the music seems to have had its intended effect :)
Wow. I painted my survivors already. I thought mine were pretty good--but THIS--this takes it to a whole new level. Bravo, Sorastro!
Thank you very much! I did put a lot into these :)
What a wonderfully edited tutorial. The music and paint scheme gave off a unified mood that matched the miniature game system. Thanks for posting this! I'll be using this tutorial on mini soon!
Thank you so much Jose! I really appreciate that kind feedback 😀
Loved the Diablo 2 style soundtrack for the video!
This is incredible, man. Congratulations!
You're a great inspiration!
Thanks so much Breno! Much appreciated :)

Ha ha - thanks mate! Congrats on owning KDM - it's an extraordinary game :)
It’s always felt like magic watching the figures come to life during your videos, but none so much as these! Phenomenal work!
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me 😀
Magnificent!! Both the painting and the music!! Very inspirational!!
That's very kind, thank you! (You can find the music on Spotify etc, too.. 😊)
Just wanted to say, it's your best video so far. A truly astonishing result.
Thank you Łukasz! I really appreciate that :)

I love how dynamic the poses are
I couldn't agree more :D

Wow best survivors I've seen painted, and I've seen a lot. Unreal! They look exceptional.
That's very kind Jeff - thank you! :)
You're work is amazing. I'm working through my black plaque minis with your videos. Can't wait to see what you do with the rest of kingdom death.
Thanks a lot Brian! I really pushed myself with this one to try to do justice to the minis. :)
great demonstration of wet blending for maximal contrast!
Thanks Frank! 😀
Beautiful music and finally someone who shows AND tells the important details in such a work. Well done mate
Thanks a lot Friedrich! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and music :)
One of your best work. One of your best music. One of your best tutorial. Congratulations!!!
Thanks so much Carlitos! I'm very glad you liked it :)

Lol - thanks mate :)
Your painting is beyond amazing!!! Cannot wait for the next video!!
Thank you Josh - you're too kind :)
I am so excited that you are doing this series. Thanks for your time!
Thank you seanagone! I'm glad you're excited for the series :)

I've just stumbled across your channel, and I'm so happy I have. Your tutorials are great!
Thanks John! I really appreciate that :)
I don't play Kingdom Death, but this is still an extremely useful video for OSL painting, and painting in the KDM-style. Thanks a lot!

+Jake Norman Thank you Jake! Your wish is my command :)
Sorastro thats awsome.
Please make more clips pf your magnificent work.
Love it 👏
Thank you Kay! I'll keep doing my best :)
Inspiring work as always! Please do the rest of the Kingdom Death minis!
Thank you! I will be working my way slowly but surely though the rest of the KDM minis :)
Simply beautiful work, and perfect video editing!!!!
Thank you very much! I appreciate that :)
Dude.. That light on miniatures! Great!
Thanks mate! :)
Wow! Love the OSL. Looks so real.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked the OSL :)
Perfect video and results. Thank you!
Can’t wait for the soundtrack
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the music :)
Amazing work as always, I'm excited to get started on my survivors.
Thanks Jon! You should be - they're magical figures to work with :)
Insanely talented. I am inspired to attempt this technique!
Thank you David! Go for it :)
Please keep KDM painting going.
@@Sorastro What would be a good GW substitute color for Dark Sea Blue?
@@Mrshyguy775 Hi Bryan! Stegadon Scale Green is pretty close 🙂
That OSL is amazing!
Thank you kindly! :)
Absolutely gorgeous!!
+Emiliano Fisanotti Thank you Emiliano! I'm glad you think so :)
Ale klasa! Super malowanie! Co za cienie! Brawo!
Thank you Bartek! I really appreciate that :)
Ok. That is insane. You are a master. "Simply add the pupils." How?!?!
Lol - thank you Damon! Painting things like the pupils comes with a little practice, and keeping those wrists (and arms) resting calmly on the table.. :)
@@Sorastro Oh nice tip! I think I need more equipment like a nice magnifying light for that extreme detail.
Damm good job, I would like to have the game just of the guy you paint in this video. Looks awesome.
Thanks so much! I also think the minis for this game are extraordinary :)
Fantastic video. That OSL is so well done.
Thank you! It was just too tempting not to do :)
As a novice painter, I’d already be happy just with the airbrush primers in place. To me that already looked amazing.
Thanks Johannes! It's true - even just a black prime and zenithal (or directional) highlights already vastly improves the look of the models :)
Sorastro's Painting thank you for replying! I’m looking at getting a spray gun with compressor on alixpress.com for around 40 bucks so I can try it out (firstly on some cheaper models). What size nozzle did you use?
No problem! My airbrush has a 0.3mm nozzle. I think anything between 0.2-0.5mm would be fine :)
Another incredible breathstocking painting. I love it!
Thank you sir! :)
And i thought i was reasonable good on my painting channel.. man i wouldn't believed you that these were painted if you didn't post this tutorial. Subbed
Thank you sir! Much appreciated :)
these miniatures deserve a good paintjob. They look stunning even without the coats. Never played the game nor do i think i ever will, but looking forward to more from this series..
