Thanks ! I’m No Mechanic but your video helped me so much!! I bashed out the steering cable out of the rusty pivot tube with a hammer just like you did. Need to do grease the pivot tube and hopefully put it back together- thanks again!!
I am restoring a 1978 pontoon boat, replacing the wood, carpet, steering console, helm, throttle/transmission controls and the Captain's chair and this is my first shot at marine work. This video was very helpful, thank you for taking the time to make it.
Thank you soooo much for making these!! I know the extra effort it takes to make a video, in your case probably more work than the repair job, but many ppl benefit from it and this new world we live in gives us the opportunity to learn and do work on it ourselves! Thanks again and all the best
Thank you ! Dangar Marine. Cost me $350 to clean up the rod at the local boat dealer. And it's last 5 years. Now I can do it by myself, and I 'm cleaning it once a year as a maintenance
You're welcome, I'm glad the video has helped you. When it comes to cable maintenance this one might help you too ua-cam.com/video/_j2xD_8k5yo/v-deo.html
I have said it before , your not just a good mechanic but your sense of humour is great . When you started banging your flat head with the hammer but qualified it as 'your'hammer which made it ok cracked me up . Thanks for the video .
Dangar, need to thank you for making this video. I used every bit of it to troubleshoot, disassemble and replace my Uflex cable and helm. Really great content. Cory in Annapolis, MD.
I really appreciate these videos as I shop for my first boat. They have been instrumental in not getting ripped off and being confident to service my own boat. Thank you from USA!
Good video. I was legitimately able to fix the steering on a boat today just from the info you provided. You make it clear what tools would be necessary so I was able to bring the right stuff and do it fast the first time. Thank you
It seems like some youtube algorithim reads my mind. Just two days ago I noticed some steering issues with my 1993 boat. Wifey was driving and couldn't get the outboard to turn tbe other way and I had to push it to get it moving back. Then this video and the other two on steering mechaisms show up. These really help understand what problems could exist and how I can fix them with tools I have. Great comments on tools. Hammering on a screw driver etc. Not every one has a shop full of the proper tools. A run to the tool store to get proper tools takes time and it seems that I always end up buying a few other tools I might need some day. I end up spending $65 and half a day to get a perfect tool for the job when I could have used an imperfect tool that I already had but had to adapt a bit that took a bit longer... Thanks for acknowledging.
Yes, you are not imagining that. My grandson had a boat given to him. My son is helping him get it into shape. He was babbling at me he was having problems replacing the steering cable. I told him UA-cam will help you. He says I can’t find this problem. You just appeared on my feed 😳I think this is what he was tryna explain to me! Anywho-thank you very much! Excellent video.
I have watched several of your videos since becoming a boat owner a year ago. I really appreciate the detail you go into. It makes a job, for a novice like me, much easier to understand. Thank you!
Excellent video! I was scratching my head a little about how to get the cable out before found this. Mine is a bit more difficult to get at but your very clear tutorial made it a straight forward job! Can't wait to get the new helm in and get back on the water.
@@DangarMarine many thanks again. I’ve taken it apart with your help. My boat is a centre-console rib and I can’t get at the back of the dashboard, so it was more of a struggle than you had. I had to behead a few rusted bolts with an end-mill in a Dremel to get the helm out. It looks like my cable is seized up, the helm is ok inside.
I know its been 3 years since your last comment but cheers to using the excess grease as a lube on the new cable, and 2 as a long time mechanic and always someone who wishes they had all the tools needed for a particular task using what you got is key, oh... and not getting hurt. Great video, take care
Great Videos. My wife will be happy that I don't have to spend another load of money at the repair shop. They are providing me with the confidence I need to start this. Thanks mate.
The information provided in this video was right on target. After never working with a steering cable previously, I was able to determine the cause of the problem and correct it easily. The video provided excellent instructions and even pointed out particular complications that might occur. Those problems did occur, but with the solutions provided I was able to resolve them quickly. Many thanks!!
Thank you for this incredible video. Replaced my cable and helm today thanks to this video. Thanks for making all your videos. I have learned so much from them.

Just finished removing a jammed cable as well as the tilt tube, never want to go through the tilt tube remove clean and replace bit again. The video is excellent it helped me get started.
Thanks for the video. Went fishing yesterday with a buddy, all was good. Went to go back out solo today and when I went to take off from the ramp I had no steering.. now it all makes sense, I thought my steering wheel was getting very tight! I haven’t taken it apart yet but I think the cable snapped

Hey Jimmy, glad the videos have been helping you with your new boat. You may have already seen it, but this video is on figuring out which part is causing it to lock up ua-cam.com/video/tfMn6bGfAKs/v-deo.html New video on tilt tube problems uploading now!
Great video, mate! Very well explained, good audio and video. With no experience whatsoever, I tried doing this before watching any guides or videos, but I failed to get the steering rod out. I didn't dare use too much force, so I had to cancel. But if I understand you correctly I am safe to just try and bang it out with a hammer? Yamaha 9.9 outboard motor.
Wish I'd watched this when I had my old boat. Steering was always a bit stiff and poorly setup. Also who of us can honestly say they've never used a normal screwdriver as a chisel. Guilty as charged. Once again a great video.
Great video! I'll be replacing my old Teleflex next weekend! Used your bilge replacement video a couple months ago. Very clear and useful instruction!Cheers,TylerSeattle, WA
Really hope your hands heal quickly, I learn so much from your videos.. can you show how to minimize cables shown when center console has no under floor way to run cables
Hi Stu Just a few observations after NOT making such an easy job of things as I should. In my case, apart from natural cackhandedness, I had problems having to feed the cable through a tight lining along the side of the boat and then having to feed the cable into a confined area under the steering console. So, some thoughts: 1. Find a friend to help with things like feeding the cable 2. Before drawing out the damaged cable attach a line to it with duct tape so as to act as a draw and guide string later 3. The area where the worm threaded cable passes into the cable housing is very delicate. Tape the plastic tube supplied that covers the exposed wormed cable firmly to the metal end of the cable housing and even better splint this junction area with 6 inches or so of split tubing, then tape over. I wrecked my first new cable because it kinked badly when feeding it in towards the console as it caught in an unseen obstruction. Succeeded in the end! John
Hey John, glad you got there in the end! Some hulls can make this job very tricky. These steering cables are combination of very stiff and hard to bend, yet with that delicate spiral end you mentioned. Often once you tuck it down the side it can be quite a tight turn to get it into the outboard tilt tube. A second set of hands can really help.
Much needed info on the helm part, which has to be where my problem lies. I have removed cable from the motor cleaned and greased but still stiff before I reinstall. Hopefully its the same type on back side because mine is a stick steer. Thanks!
Thanks for all your great videos! I do have a question. You had to pound the new steering rod into the tilt tube. Shouldn’t that slide in cleanly for smooth operation?
Thank you for taking the time to make this how-to video. It saved me a lot of money.
Thanks ! I’m No Mechanic but your video helped me so much!! I bashed out the steering cable out of the rusty pivot tube with a hammer just like you did. Need to do grease the pivot tube and hopefully put it back together- thanks again!!

In my case, apart from natural cackhandedness, I had problems having to feed the cable through a tight lining along the side of the boat and then having to feed the cable into a confined area under the steering console. So, some thoughts:
1. Find a friend to help with things like feeding the cable
2. Before drawing out the damaged cable attach a line to it with duct tape so as to act as a draw and guide string later
A second set of hands can really help.
super educational as always, thank you for your time!
You're welcome Adam. :)
Your videos are awsome. Huge fan.

Thanks mate. Top vid. I was on the right track but just needed some confirmation. Cheers.

Thanks mate. :)
Thanks this helped get my steering cable off.
Good news, glad it helped. :)
Much needed info on the helm part, which has to be where my problem lies. I have removed cable from the motor cleaned and greased but still stiff before I reinstall. Hopefully its the same type on back side because mine is a stick steer. Thanks!
hi great video thanks for this my steering has a lot of play in it should i replace the cable or the steering helm thanks
Excellent content. Great tips and how to. Thank you for this!
Thanks for all your great videos! I do have a question. You had to pound the new steering rod into the tilt tube. Shouldn’t that slide in cleanly for smooth operation?
Your the man. I love your videos there very informative. Cheers mate 🍻
What would I have done without this video?
I hope it helped you! :)

You're welcome Iain, glad the video helped you. :)
Side cuts remove woodruff keys easily, with little damage to key and none to tool because the key is softer.
