Replacing the steering cable and helm in a boat

  • In this video I replace a Teleflex / SeaStar steering cable and helm. This involves removing the old cable, removing the steering wheel and helm and installing the new ones. This can be quite a simple job or a bit tricky depending on the shape of the hull and how corroded the old steering is. It is definitely something you can do yourself though using only simple hand tools. Each cable type has a different licking mechanism, either an R clip or a strew that how the spiral section in the helm.

    It seems like some youtube algorithim reads my mind. Just two days ago I noticed some steering issues with my 1993 boat. Wifey was driving and couldn't get the outboard to turn tbe other way and I had to push it to get it moving back. Then this video and the other two on steering mechaisms show up. These really help understand what problems could exist and how I can fix them with tools I have.
    Great comments on tools. Hammering on a screw driver etc. Not every one has a shop full of the proper tools. A run to the tool store to get proper tools takes time and it seems that I always end up buying a few other tools I might need some day. I end up spending $65 and half a day to get a perfect tool for the job when I could have used an imperfect tool that I already had but had to adapt a bit that took a bit longer... Thanks for acknowledging.

      Yes, you are not imagining that. My grandson had a boat given to him. My son is helping him get it into shape. He was babbling at me he was having problems replacing the steering cable. I told him UA-cam will help you. He says I can’t find this problem. You just appeared on my feed 😳I think this is what he was tryna explain to me! Anywho-thank you very much! Excellent video.

      @@DangarMarine many thanks again. I’ve taken it apart with your help. My boat is a centre-console rib and I can’t get at the back of the dashboard, so it was more of a struggle than you had. I had to behead a few rusted bolts with an end-mill in a Dremel to get the helm out. It looks like my cable is seized up, the helm is ok inside.

      Good presentation but does not apply to all boats, for exemple on my 1994 sportman 15' Key West I had to get an engin hoist to remove the outboard motor from the tramson due to no space to remove or install the steel shaft in the sleeve below, also wish there was a tool to clean the inner rust in the sleeve.

    Just came across your vids the last month or so, but really enjoying them. I've only done one project of my own on my Carolina Skiff 238DLV, and that was a bilge pump and float switch change out. I did notice and exceptionally lengthy steering cable cooked up in the bilge and became curious as to what a replacement might entail if it ever became necessary to do so. This video gave some great instruction along with the comfort that I might tackle it myself. Hopefully, that's a way into the future. Thanks for all the good info, even on boats and motors not similar to my own. Blessings from Alabama!

    Hi Stu
    Just a few observations after NOT making such an easy job of things as I should. In my case, apart from natural cackhandedness, I had problems having to feed the cable through a tight lining along the side of the boat and then having to feed the cable into a confined area under the steering console. So, some thoughts:
    1. Find a friend to help with things like feeding the cable
    2. Before drawing out the damaged cable attach a line to it with duct tape so as to act as a draw and guide string later
    3. The area where the worm threaded cable passes into the cable housing is very delicate. Tape the plastic tube supplied that covers the exposed wormed cable firmly to the metal end of the cable housing and even better splint this junction area with 6 inches or so of split tubing, then tape over. I wrecked my first new cable because it kinked badly when feeding it in towards the console as it caught in an unseen obstruction.
    Succeeded in the end!
    John

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  8 років тому

      Hey John, glad you got there in the end! Some hulls can make this job very tricky. These steering cables are combination of very stiff and hard to bend, yet with that delicate spiral end you mentioned. Often once you tuck it down the side it can be quite a tight turn to get it into the outboard tilt tube. A second set of hands can really help.

      +Dangar Marine It is a big job but doable as long as you have done a fair amount of woodworking and are willing to learn about fiberglass and epoxy, I started late June last year and I was about 80 % complete by late October ( I am 70 and retired) when I had to stop because of our 'wonderful' winters :). Started again last week and now doing the engine installation, steering, electrical etc.... and countless hours of sanding and painting once it gets warmer. Hope to launch this coming July if all goes well. Anyway, I enjoy your videos, even the ones not applicable to me since I am totally new to boating.

    Wish I'd watched this when I had my old boat. Steering was always a bit stiff and poorly setup. Also who of us can honestly say they've never used a normal screwdriver as a chisel. Guilty as charged. Once again a great video.

    Much needed info on the helm part, which has to be where my problem lies. I have removed cable from the motor cleaned and greased but still stiff before I reinstall. Hopefully its the same type on back side because mine is a stick steer. Thanks!

    Great video, mate! Very well explained, good audio and video. With no experience whatsoever, I tried doing this before watching any guides or videos, but I failed to get the steering rod out. I didn't dare use too much force, so I had to cancel. But if I understand you correctly I am safe to just try and bang it out with a hammer? Yamaha 9.9 outboard motor.

    Great video, as far as I'm aware the grease nipples are only for the tilt tube though, the grease doesn't actually make it through to the steering cable.

    A boat mechanic down here recommends to just use regular motor oil instead of grease in the steering tube. I went to buy some grease from him and said "I'll sell you the grease, but i only use oil on every motor i service." He said it just cakes up and gets hard over time. So I just used some cheap motor oil and i must say it turns just as smooth and don't have a mess of grease. And i do trust him. He is the oldest and 1 of the biggest local boat mechanics here in New Orleans and we have a LOT of boats down here

      I can really see where he is coming from. Grease can very quickly become like glue with age and exposure to sun and salt water. I always use this very light lithium grease, but oil sounds like a great option too.

      Dangar Marine do you both think the old could be bad for the water? that's my only concern with oil

    • @jimbogasoline2042
      @jimbogasoline2042 7 років тому

      SouthFloridaFishing the oil doesn't come splashing out when you turn the wheel. It just coats the tube. If you try it out you'll see what i mean. He did it a good way. But people that don't remove the tube just use the zerk and pump marine grease. Thats when you can have the hardened grease problem and then you would have to remove and do it the way he showed in the video.

    Thanks for all your great videos! I do have a question. You had to pound the new steering rod into the tilt tube. Shouldn’t that slide in cleanly for smooth operation?
