      What about dealing with the reliability issues with the changes made to the cylinder head which is already a problem for low mileage non tuned cars ? Hopefully a solution comes up then it would make sense to then tune it.

    Just a quick question.You seem very knowledgeable with this new B58 TU2 engine.I was looking at the Canadian MY25 M440i Coupe ordering guide and noticed that it lists this info for the exhaust system in the car,
    1D1 Exhaust technology SULEV30
    5AL Active Protection
    PMTECHN.
    The first numbers 1D1 is the standard feature code.When i did a google search it lists this as being some kind of particulate filter.Are you able to confirm that the new B58 TU2 engine in the US and Canada has a particulate filter in the exhaust like European BMW’s have had for many years now?All of the reviews i have read have said that it ruins the sound of the exhaust and results in a loss of hp.
    I might just order the current MY24 M340i now because i don’t want to have a car with a crappy sounding exhaust.What is your opinion of the exhaust sound in the X5 and X7 with this engine?

    My brother got this car last February 2023. A 2023 m340 X drive he built. Has port injection stock from the factory. Etc. we shall be doing a build soon enough. Warranty is why he didn’t wanna bother with it.

    Port injection sounds interesting, wanting to put that on our S58 along side the direct injection for more power and eliminate direct injector faults that may happen .
    Diagram in the video shows them piped up to the HP pump though???
    Would have thought port injection would have been a separate low pressure feed .

      @@kern417 👍 looks like a reliable cost effective mod to 750bhp for us . Rather than the over priced add on aftermarket stuff.
      Helps keep the inlet ports and valves clean, aids cooling and reduces the effect of a dodgy HP injector melting a piston.

      It can be but just know you’ll prob need a bigger tire in the back and idk how the car would like that considering it’s xdrive

      Having xDrive then doing x delete for a roll race still puts you at a weight disadvantage. RWD versions weigh less but have less traction from a launch. AWD only has the advantage from the line so it makes no sense to try and roll race with x delete unless you have probably 200hp more than the RWD version you're racing.

    thats crazy!!! This 3rd generation of b58's is catching up to s55's stage 2 93 octane power.... I GUESS i should accept it since its 2024, and it has been 10 years since the s55 was released in 2014.

    The cylinder head itself isn't the issue, it's the exhaust side adjustable rocker arms. There is currently a recall for a roughly 3 month window of early 2023-produced vehicles. Shouldn't be an issue for those later production dates since they fixed it from factory now.
    They also changed both VANOS phasers, now going from oil pressure controlled to fully electronically controlled with near-infinite positions. Different actuators for those as well and extremely difficult to access them, at least on the X7s.
    But some other cons to note on the Gen 3 is the use of 0W-12 oil, and the change to ignition coils being individually registered in the DME to their corresponding cylinders (goodbye swapping coils to diagnose misfires). Overall a good upgrade but definitely added complexity as well.

      Well that's disappointing. I know about the ignition coils but I thought it was just more intelligent to make it easier to diagnose individual cylinder issues. I didn't realize it was literally registered to each cylinder.

      @@kern417 Yeah unfortunately so, it's the same concept as registering injectors. BMW does mention the coils should last longer due to the new heatsink design but only time will tell 🤞

      Thanks for the info. Do you know how the adjustable rocker arms work on the exh side? Is it dual stage or does it manipulate just one or both exh valves? The initial BMW press release from a couple of years ago had some confusing language but it seemed like BMW was implying that they added valvetronic to the exh side for the Gen 3. Judging from the pics in this video it looks to be something else but it's difficult to see the mechanism and how it works.

      @@DylanTLawson it's a similar concept to valavetronic, but instead of being actuated via worm gear from a servomotor, there is a new dual solenoid/module on the front of cylinder head/valve cover where the exhaust cam is, and these solenoids actuate two long flattened rods (sitting in a small channel along the exh side of cyl head) with springs on the end of each one. The new rocker arms have small spring-tensioned pins on them which are moved forward or back with the flattened rods via the solenoids. The main function of the adjustable rocker arms, from what I am seeing from the description on the dealer's most recent version of ISTA, is to add exhaust-braking capabilities to the B58.

    What is the work around in event that the DME FIRMWARE updates on unlocked ECUs wipe the tune off, reset to factory tune or shutdown the car entirely ?

      It needs to manually be updated, I can't see how it will wipe it if you choose to just not update it.

      Then you need to get it unlocked again. Nothing has changed regarding that. That's why tuners recommend turning off OTA updates or going to dealers for software updates.

    I traded my F32 440xi for a G42 M240xi. I'm happy with it and the Gen 2 B58 is more than enough for me, since I don't really plan on tunning.

      Cheers man. I picked up my '23 M240i xd about 3 months ago. Already has over 10,000 miles on it. Immediately went on a coast-to-coast-to-coast road trip. Pikes peak, Khyv peak, yellowstone, mt rushmore, everything. The gen 2 is WAY more than enough for everyone.
      This dual port stuff will have it's place in about 5 years I'm sure, but for now, I'm still trying not to vomit when I floor my gen2. lol

      You have no idea how amazing a simple downpipe and stage 2 tune can do to that car, very cheap to do and turns the car into an absolute ripper, but would understand if you want to keep factory warranty.

    Also...they are goong back to the 2port design? The 6 port can make up to 100 hp more apples for apples compared to the 2port (or something like that according to Mike Botti)

      B58B30M1 has been using 2-post this whole time - only the O1 retained the 6-port head. BMW likely wants to consolidate all production to 2-port for emissions and simplicity, and because they've essentially equalled the O1's output with the 2-port design, they have little reason to keep making a 6-port version.

      You can get something like the Dorch DS25-350 on the Gen2 and be good for 6-720whp. Easy install. You can use it even with OTS tunes like from BM3. I use it with the e50 tune.

      I don't think so. It will require at a minimum adapters for the coolant lines, but also fuel lines for the port injection and you'll still need a reflex to control it.

      What i didn't know at the time is the hybrid system fills in the gap. The engine makes less power but the drivetrain adds power back in.

    It makes absolutely no sense for BMW to lock their DME and make it extremely hard for enthusiasts to mod their cars. They are literally stabbing their hardcore fanbase in the back, in the area where we all thought bmw stood for and understood as why we grown to love the brand.

    I’ve been talking b58’s with my friend who is a tech at my local dealer. He says later revisions can make more power, but the original gen 1 b58 is the most reliable. All the extra stuff they put in the TU’s end up breaking

      Yes those cars are fake M's (in my opinion) but they still come with some great equipment like anti roll bars and of course a power bump over the standard models. If your that bothered just debage the car.

      I believe the Supra lifecycle is almost over so I highly doubt it. They don't sell enough of them. But we'll see

      Not even. Just in general sports cars don't sell. Even the BR-Z/FR-S has the same problem. You need a cult following to do numbers (see mopar, mustang, Corvette etc). There was initial hype and then it died off.
