As a young man, Eboli worked as a professional boxer. In the early 1920s, during Prohibition, Eboli became a bootlegger for future crime boss Lucky Luciano. By the early 1930s, Eboli had become the personal bodyguard for Luciano's underboss, Vito "Don Vito" Genovese. Some sources claim that Eboli committed as many as 20 murders for the Genovese family. He owed 4 million to Carlo Gambino when he got killed. True or untrue? Why did they all take Irish names?
He took the name Tommy Ryan after the boxing champion. Eboli wanted to be a fighter but had to conceal it from his father. In that era, many fighters fought under different names. Because Irish fighters were so popular (Jack Dempsey) they often took Irish. names
